The San Francisco 49ers advanced to the NFC title game on Sunday after their 12th consecutive win, with superstar running back Christian McCaffrey scoring the go-ahead touchdown in the victory over the Cowboys. Since he arrived in an October trade, McCaffrey has helped take San Francisco's offense to another level, and he now has the Niners — a team his dad used to play for — one win away from the Super Bowl. However, when it comes to athleticism — and specifically, his speed — McCaffrey actually takes more after his mom. Today, The Athletic's Matt Barrows tells us that story.Read Matt Barrows's full story about the McCaffrey family: https://theathletic.com/4083118/2023/01/13/49ers-christian-mccaffrey-mom/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Alan Cox Show
This week you will LAUGH, LEARN, and be incredibly INSPIRED.My guest had an insanely difficult childhood and still went on to have tremendous success in so many areas of life. How do you overcome pain? A difficult childhood or relationship? How do you navigate career and family? Etc etc This week I'm honored to share with you the truly incredible Christina Pazsitzky. At the end of the show I think you'll feel like you went through one of the most enjoyable therapy sessions you could possibly ever imagine.I have followed her work for a couple of years now, and I think she is one of the MOST TALENTED ARTISTS in any field I've ever seen. She is married to stand-up comedian TOM SEGURA and has two boys, so you can guess how crazy that house is most times. Although you'll crack up at what she's got to say, much of Christina's humor is rooted in some pretty HEAVY ISSUES. Much of the world's great humor starts from places of pain, and as you'll hear, Christina is no exception.Christina has taken those DARK, EDGY PLACES with no safe place that scared her as a child and turned them into EMOTIONAL INSIGHTS that can't be faked. Try growing up with a mom who was borderline schizophrenic and a dad who's been married five times! She was able to take those extremes and turn them into INCREDIBLY RELATABLE OBSERVATIONS.Pay particular attention to Christina's KETAMINE TRIP after breaking her ankle in four places. It's one of the most powerful stories I've ever heard, especially after tying it into the story she tells on her Mom Genes special. You'll also hear Christina's take on going to THERAPY for 12 years. Spoiler alert! In a completely sane answer, she's a big fan of it.Expect to LAUGH.But also be prepared to DROP A TEAR or two…That's the essence of comedy. And the essence of Christina P.Enjoy!

This episode is all about food! Tina Laboy and Rachel Coleman are the co-hosts of Mom Genes the Podcast. Tina is a Registered Dietician and certified personal trainer who lives in Austin Texas, and Rachel is a Marriage and Family Therapist and a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist who lives in Southern California. Together on their podcast, they take listeners on a journey of unpacking their old beliefs about food and weight to increase their confidence and raise body confident kids. I was curious to find out what advice Tina and Rachel could share about what language that can use - and what language we should avoid - when talking to children about food and about their bodies. I think this is a topic that a lot of parents and teachers struggle to approach in any language, and I knew they would have some great advice. Plus, Tina and Rachel are both moms (Rachel is a mom of three and Tina is a mom of one, with another due at the end of January) and Tina's son goes to a Spanish-immersion preschool, so we also chatted about what that experience has been like for her family. I hear everyone talking about the importance of self care during pregnancy, but honestly I don't have time. How is this even possible? What does self care look like when your life doesn't feel like yours anymore? What if I am upset with my body, because it is in pain and is sore and tired? I need your advice. Thank you! I feel like the world is passing me by and each day I am just trying to survive. I want to learn to thrive, but the things that will make me feel alive are the self care hobbies (I miss my book club), activities (I miss yoga), and behaviors (I just want to sleep and cook a decent meal!) just don't feel feasible. The “Bite Sized Education” Series This week we are chatting about life after chronic dieting. When we let go of the routine, rules, and structure that diet culture offers as a safety net for eating, we are often faced with the unknown of how to be a mindful eater. We know that diet culture is toxic and the rules ignored our body attunement, but how do we switch gears? Especially when dieting has offered us reliability in an unreliable life. We share tips for mindful eating, offer journal prompts to explore the fears of letting go of dieting, and how to let go of control over our bodies to find body trust. Our amazing listeners also wrote in and in this episode we will answer the following question: Dear Mom Genes, I am over it! I have dieted for, literally, my entire life. I was put on a diet by my parents as a kid and have just continued that cycle throughout my entire adult hood. Now that I have given up on dieting I feel lost and very scared about the unknown as well as what my future holds. Am I capable of doing life without dieting? One of the main reasons that I am rejecting dieting is for my kids, because I don't want them to grow up with the same lifestyle that I had, but I feel pretty lost. What is next? HELP! The “Bite Sized Education” Series In this week's episode we elaborate on the type of hunger that is labeled “emotional eating” and help you define your understanding of what this entails and how to increase your awareness around emotional urges to eat. We give tips on how to separate out food and feelings and when using food as a coping skill is normal versus problematic. We explore the beauty that food offers through pleasure and connection and why emotional eating has increased during the pandemic. We believe that emotional hunger is a biologically normal hunger and that food is a beautiful gift, and we hope that the education surrounding this topic in this episode helps you find peace and enjoy food freedom. Our amazing listeners also wrote in and in this episode we will answer the following question: Dear Mom Genes, I am really confused on the definition of emotional eating. I feel like people demonize this term, but I also don't want to be doing it wrong. If I am eating because I am sad or lonely, is that wrong? Or what about if I am celebrating a holiday or birthday with my kids? Can I eat the cake even if I am not hungry? I feel like there is a lot of negativity around emotional eating and that we shouldn't be doing it or else we are not doing intuitive eating correctly. Can you elaborate? The “Bite Sized Education” Series Did you know there is more than just one simple “hunger” that we experience? In this episode we explore three types of hunger: physical, logical, and emotional. We explain each type, give examples of how this may appear, and give you tips on how to be more in attunement with the type of hunger you may be experiencing. We encourage curiosity and mindfulness as you navigate understanding your bodies cues and give education on how to increase your non judgemental stance towards your hunger. Our amazing listeners also wrote in and in this episode we will answer the following question: Dear Mom Genes, I am learning so much about how to listen to my body's signals to finally break the diet cycle. I'm more in touch with my hunger cues, learning to understand when I feel full, and even aware when I'm wanting a snack when I'm feeling bored or sad instead of hungry. But I still have times when I get a little confused if what I'm feeling is physical hunger, if I'm just in the mood for a certain food, or if it's emotional eating. Can you give more details on the types of hunger so I can keep learning to differentiate? The “Bite Sized Education” Series In part 2 of exploring “what is healthy eating?” we dive deep into the systemic roots of diet culture and the inequality around health that perpetuates binary definitions of health. We explore how privilege unfairly defines health standards and determines healthy lifestyles while not being inclusive to various cultures, socio economic statuses, and access to resources. We interview Deanna Belleny Lewis, MPH RDN about how her work in public health and her passion about diversifying the field of nutrition has led her to debunking myths about healthy eating. Deanna shares her definition of health and how she helps clients navigate finding a relationship with nutrition that works for them, regardless of resources and finances. The “Bite Sized Education” Series In part one of this week's episodes, we are covering the multiple layers of health, nutrition, and the privilege that defines health in our society. We discuss how health is physical and includes nutrition elements but if mental health is suffering because of strict rules about healthy eating, then it is not true health. We chat about the mental health component of enjoying food and finding a relationship with food that works for our bodies and our livelihood. Our amazing listeners also wrote in and in this episode we will answer the following question: Dear Mom Genes, Thank you for all you are doing and for providing the information and education you have thus far. Though I feel inspired by your mom bod messaging I am conflicted about some of the food information you are providing. I do believe in ‘providing variety for my family' and having ‘everything in moderation' however; I do want to eat healthy and take care of my body. That being said, the information that is available out there about healthy eating is so confusing. I'm worried that if I follow what the internet is saying my family will be super limited. But I also don't always trust what is in all foods. Can you provide some insight into what healthy eating actually is? Thanks for your help! The “Bite Sized Education” Series In this episode we discuss the hot topic of people's proposed “weight loss success stories” and the confusion that occurs within these stories and messaging. We unpack the layers of thin privilege and societal body hierarchies that diet culture is built on. We give tips and tricks on how to respond to comments and conversations about weight loss or changed bodies. Finally, we help listeners look beyond the external body change and identify how making peace with internal conflicts or focusing on emotional and mental self care is the true success. Our amazing listeners also wrote in and in this episode we will answer the following question: Dear Mom Genes, I gained a lot of weight during my pregnancies and recently I dedicated myself to self care to lose the weight. I feel so much better and can now run around the backyard with my kids without getting winded. You preach a lot about being anti diet and body acceptance, but weight loss did help me. Is that wrong? On episode 48 I'm joined by the wonderfully creative Alexandra Tsarpalas. She is the other other half of Mom Genes, our long running Chicago comedy show that we hosted as your weird moms and invited other comics to portray their family members. After years of telling me she doesn't like scary movies, she FINALLY agreed to do my podcast. Together we discussed Troll 2 and all the campy ridiculousness absolutely told me why she picked it. The “Bite Sized Education” Series In part two of our episode series on gut health we interview the fabulous Tammy Beasley, MS, RDN, CEDRD-S, CSSD on how she explains a healthy gut to her clients. Tammy discusses the importance of a nourished gut first and foremost and gives a powerful analogy, famously referred to in her professional circle as the “sponge analogy,” that we hope helps our listeners understand how the gut works most effectively! Tammy answers questions about myths around gut health and the importance of the psychological component of finding peace in one's relationship with food in order to maintain a healthy digestive system. Tammy is generous enough to verbally explain her sponge analogy on this episode and give you amazing listeners a VIDEO demonstration, which is linked in the show notes on our website, so check it out! The “Bite Sized Education” Series In this week's two part episode we are unpacking the confusion surrounding “gut health” and defining the various buzz words associated with this concept such as food intolerance, food sensitivities, and food allergies. We are exploring how diet culture has hijacked this term and the glorification of restriction in our culture makes it easy to jump on the elimination band wagon without doing the proper medical or psychological evaluation needed to determine what is best for your body. We give you reflection questions to ask yourself before experimenting with elimination diets or testing out gut health myths from both a dietary and psychological angle. Our amazing listeners also wrote in and in this episode we will answer the following question: Dear Mom Genes, I have a few friends who transitioned to a gluten free diet and claim they feel so much better. How do I know if this is actually healthy? I am so confused by the information out there that is telling me gluten free or dairy free is healthier and are unsure if I should try an elimination diet to see if I would actually feel better without these foods. Should my kids become gluten free if it will help them with hyperactivity? Should I cut out dairy if I have breakouts on my face? So many questions!! Help! The “Bite Sized Education” Series In part 2 of “Does My Child Have an Eating Disorder?” we interviewed Dr Maria Monge, MD, a pediatric eating disorder specialist, who offers our listeners a medical perspective on signs and symptoms of eating patterns in children and teens that could be worrisome for the child's health and development. Dr Monge identifies what is concerning vs average weight changes, appetite fluctuations, and body image in growing children. Dr Monge gives concrete examples of concerning behavioral changes around food for parents to be aware of as they navigate the challenges of raising children in a culture that is hyper focused on health and bodies. The “Bite Sized Education” Series In this week's part 1 episode of “Does My Child Have an Eating Disorder?,” we discuss the nature vs nurture of the development of eating disorders or a disorder relationship with food and bodies. We explore how food can be a coping skill that is learned and genetic, the pressures that we receive from the world that can impact our relationship with food, and we discuss why eating disorders have increased during the pandemic. We offer tangible ways of breaking the diet legacy in the home and how parents can provide a safe home that is preventative to the nurturance of an eating disorder. We give parents tools on how to connect with their child by understanding their underlying emotional needs through reflective questioning and listening. Our amazing listeners also wrote in and in this episode we will answer the following question: Dear Mom Genes, My daughter is not even a teenager yet but is already starting to ask questions about why her body is shaped the way it is compared to her friends bodies. She is worried about how her body looks in her bathing suit, will suddenly stop eating certain foods if she hears a commercial or message that those foods are unhealthy, and asked me if she can start weighing herself. I try so hard to be positive even though I don't love my body either….should I be concerned she has developed an ED? The “Bite Sized Education” Series Sugar is a commonly feared, and confusing, nutrient. In this episode, we dive into how you can develop a neutral, intuitive relationship with sugar by debunking diet culture messages and increasing body attunement. We explore how to manage sugar in your house and with your kids according to the various feeding models and give practical examples of how to implement these models when dessert time rolls around. Our amazing listeners also wrote in and in this episode we will answer the following question: Dear Mom Genes, My kid came home with a handout that says “sugar is bad” and I kind of believe it. I think the sugar in foods does impact people's health and body size, so I don't believe that limiting it and teaching how much hidden sugar is in items is harmful. The “Bite Sized Education” Series In part 2 of “What is Picky Eating?” we interview Keira Oseroff, LMFT CEDS from the Ellyn Satter Institute on how parents can navigate feeding their children. Keira discusses the Division of Responsibility feeding modality of how families can have meals together where they are sharing food and conversation while also providing opportunities for children to practice trusting their bodies. In the Division of Responsibility a parents chooses: the “what,” the “when, and the “where” while the child chooses the “if” and “how much.” Keira identifies how this can look in real life settings and the challenges that occur in the division. This episode is full of wisdom on how parents can have a calm and confident approach to feeding their family while navigating diet culture messaging. The “Bite Sized Education” Series In this week's part 1 episode of “What is Picky Eating,” we explore the multiple complex layers of developing a trusting feeding relationship in our children and between parents and children. We define what the difference is between “picky eating” vs average “childhood preferences” and how parents can realistically navigate these feeding challenges while still modeling intuitive eating and practicing the Ellyn Satter Institute model of Division of Responsibility. Our amazing listeners also wrote in and in this episode we will answer the following question: Dear Mom Genes, I am writing, because my kid REFUSES to eat their fruits and veggies and I am going crazy! I am worried that I am creating a person that is not going to be able to eat a salad when they are older, but also am exhausted and cannot fight with my child anymore. The “Myth Busters” Series In this week's episode we are chatting all about kids and nutrition by busting the myth that “kids today aren't eating enough healthy foods.” As Mom's ourselves, we know that one of the biggest stressors on parents today is how to feed their children so we are explaining the psychology behind this fear and pressure and interviewing the RD's of Sunny Side Up Nutrition, Anna Lutz, MPH, RDN, LD and Elizabeth Davenport, MPH, RDN, LD @sunnysideupnutrition. Feeding our children becomes our primary goal as soon as the child is born, so it is natural that parenting begins with this obsession of how, what, and how much our children are eating. Feeding our baby is also a form of attachment bonding for both the child and parent and a parental instinct absolutely takes over when we suddenly become insanely preoccupied with our children's input and output (remember having to track number of wet diapers in the hospital??) This natural, survival instinct ignited in parents combined with a culture obsessed with health and beauty and longevity, makes the perfect recipe for wanting to be perfect in how we feed our children. We find that this fear is mostly from the parents worried that they are not doing a good job or are projecting their own insecurities about food or their body onto their kids. So as a result, they pressure their child to eat a certain amount, eat specific foods, disregard their internal cues and preferences and monitor their bodies. What we are hoping for parents to get out of this episode today is trust. Trust in yourselves as parents, but mainly trust in your children. The “Myth Busters” Series In this week's episode we are switching gears from busting myths about adult bodies and chatting about kids bodies by busting the myth...that “kids today aren't healthy!” This myth is one that most parents are so confused by: are their kids healthy? Is the food we are feeding our kids nourishing them? Are kids today too sedentary? Should parents be DOING something about their kids health? This is obviously a complicated myth to completely pull apart with multiple layers about the food industry, weight and BMI, and the overarching concept of health, so we touch on all of these but focus on how this myth has narrowed pediatric health to just diet and exercise. We are going to give you a brief history of this myth's origins and then we are interviewing a passionate myth buster on kids health: Virginia Sole-Smith, author of The Eating Instinct and the newsletter Burnt Toast. A healthy child is more than the number on the scale: it is a child who can be in their body with confidence and self-respect, regardless of their abilities, size, race, or socioeconomic status. The “Myth Busters” Series While we love chatting about the more generalized diet culture messaging, our clinical work and passion is in the treatment of Eating Disorders. We are passionate about helping bust stereotypes of Eating Disorders in order to help all people get the care they deserve and help providers become more proficient in their treatment approaches. The myth we are busting in this week’s episode is “eating disorders only happen to thin white women” and interviewing psychotherapist Nichomi Higgins, LMFT for further exploration of the harm perpetuated by this myth in society and treatment settings. We are taking a look at how healthism is rooted in white supremacy and how this white centered definition of health and nutrition is harmful due to its lack of awareness of all cultural food beliefs and by the definition of what is a disordered relationship with food. Eating Disorders occurs in everyone b/c everyone has to have a relationship with food to survive. This, in addition to a diet culture centered in the definition of the white beauty ideal as well as a society rooted in racism and oppression of so many bodies, perpetuates a complex relationship with food. For more on the nuanced ways that this is expressed in our society as well as in treatment center care, check out this week’s episode. The “Myth Busters” Series In this episode we are going to be busting a myth surrounding the impact of racism on body liberation and healthism. There is no body liberation and acceptance without all bodies being free to exist without prejudice, so anti-racism, and acknowledging the privileges you hold, are crucial topics to always be centered in the body acceptance conversation. Today’s myth that we are busting is “there is no hierarchy of bodies,” or the thought that, even if there is, “I am colorblind and I accept all bodies.” Now, we are two white podcast host’s so we acknowledge that our white privilege and lack of lived experience of being on the receiving end of racism definitely does not render us able to cover this topic effectively. So we are honored and thrilled to have our guest, Christyna Johnson, RD @encouragingRD join us to bust this myth! We highlighted the concept of how colorblindness and denial of inherent racism have continued to allow people to ignore racial discrimination, which continues to harm and impact people experiencing both macro and microaggressions as a result of the color of their skin. We explored how this impacts the interpretations of health, nutrition, and beauty on systemic and individual levels as well as how providers in the medical and mental health fields can be improve their care through unlearning and listening. The “Myth Busters” Series Oh, exercise. It’s kind of a curse word we mutter at times, and other times it’s a declaration of self care. We all have a complicated relationship with exercise thanks to an appearance obsessed culture, so today’s myth that we are busting is: “Exercise is for weight loss! So, If I’m not going to lose weight, I don’t want to exercise!” So we are going to chat a little bit about how we hear this myth express itself and then we are welcoming body positive fitness instructor Holly Max @fatbarrebabe to help us bust this myth even more! Since guilt and shame are common themes in all of the most commonly expressed myths about exercise, we knew we had to help bust this myth by neutralizing exercise, or joyful movement as we prefer to call it, so that we can get it back to the root. Exercise is a celebration of your body, not a punishment or a way to change your body. By shifting the goal from external change to internal motivation of mental health clarity or de-stress or, gasp, FUN, we lose any expectations on ourselves and allow movement to connect us to ourselves. If that sounds challenging, then listen to this episode where we explain how to do this and give you journal prompts for further exploration. The "Myth Busters Series" In this episode we are busting a myth about how pervasive the beauty industry is and how it can impact our relationship with our bodies and our self worth. We do a lot of episodes on busting myths about diets or food rules, but what about all those fancy words like “wellness industry?” and “but it’s a lifestyle change?” as well as all the products we are constantly being sold to change our appearance. So this week we are busting the myth that “we are not selling beauty products, we are selling a lifestyle change!” While the diet industry can be easy to spot due to its primary focus being weight loss, the wellness or lifestyle industry is extremely varied: it includes lotions, face products, makeup, fitness clothes, vitamins, supplements, and the list goes on. As we navigate people’s MLM pitches, influencer’s product advertisements, or pop up ads on social media, with the underlying message that using their products will buy you a level of health and wellbeing, the difficult part to discern is what is true and what is not? What is fake advertising, what is new found science, and do we even need any of these products? Is the bottom line messaging of the wellness industry the same as the diet industry in that we live in a culture obsessed with beauty, bodies, sexuality, and appearance and whether it’s a diet or a face cream, they are all selling the same thing: change your body, feel better. We are excited to be taking a closer look at this entire industry with the host of the “Your Body, Your Brand” podcast Kai Prins and ponder whether or not the wellness and beauty industry are really all that different from the diet industry? Elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2019, she became the first-ever woman scientist to receive the honor of having a portrait on display in the gallery of the Danny Thomas Research Center on the campus of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Kathryn also interviews Abigail Tucker, NY Times best selling author of “Mom Genes: Inside the New Science of Our Ancient Maternal Instinct.” Does motherhood change how a woman feels love? Are mothers destined to mimic their own mom's parenting style? Does the brain of a new mom ever really bounce back? The answers, explored in Tucker's new book, have powerful implications for women, families and our society. A longtime writer for Smithsonian Magazine, Tucker writes Mom Genes to be scientific and accessible. Part scientific odyssey, part memoir, it weaves the latest research from top labs across the globe including Yale, Princeton, Leiden and more with Tucker's personal experiences to create a delightful, surprising and poignant portrait of motherhood.

The "Myth Busters" Series A part of body acceptance (especially for Mom’s) is grappling with wondering if we are sexy or attractive and feeling confident in our bodies as sexual beings. So the myth we are busting in this week’s episode is “I cannot be sexually confident if I am not body confident.” We truly believe that all bodies are sexy BUT we also believe that to feel sexy or to be sexually confident isn’t actually about your body at all - it’s much more about a general sense of body attunement, knowing your body's needs and wants, and having radical body liberation and body neutrality. So we are going to share our thoughts on this myth and then we are interviewing Amber Allen, LMFT. We believe that body image starts in the mind, not the body. Therefore, when we are able to heal from the negative societal messaging that we have internalized about our bodies, we are able to be more mindful about what feels best for us and attuned with not only our bodies but our partners bodies and the connection, as well. A journal prompt that we encourage you to consider as you navigate healing your body attunement in this area is “what are the values of beauty that I need to continue to release in order to become more body positive about my sexual body?” Connect with Amber: http://www.newdaygroup.org/member/amber-allen/ For full episode information and links discussed in the episode, please go to www.momgenesthepodcast.com. The "Myth Busters" Series The impact of stigmatization and discrimination on one’s body trust and body attunement is significant, which is why continuing to dismantle body hierarchies in our society must be at the foundation of the body positive movement. When one is navigating our society in their gender identity or sexuality, a relationship with one’s body and food intake can be impacted. We are passionate about busting myths so that all bodies can be safe to exist in this world, so this week we are busting the myth that…. “cisgender is the gender norm and the typical family system is a heterosexual household.” Discrimination, confusion, shame placed on us by others, and bullying all impact our nervous system. As you will hear in our interview this episode with Neathery Falchuk, LCSW, CGP @ampleandrooted, this assault to the nervous system can impact one’s ability to be a mindful eater. Neathery discusses the importance of a sense of connectedness and belonging which helps calm our nervous systems, offers a safe space for our bodies to exist, and has a direct correlation on our relationship with food and movement. We encourage all of you listening to continue to receive education on what it means to be an LGBTQ+ ally, connect with organizations or communities that support the mental health and physical protection of this community, and make your home a safe space for ALL bodies. Susan Seals from BoneZones.com dropped off some pots and pans for Krisha. Frank made loud clanging noises near the microphone and he will have to edit them out. The kitchenware belonged to Bonnie Monday's mother, who passed away recently. Frank's daughter's sister-in-law asked Frank for a sample of his late mother's handwriting. She ordered a bracelet in the shape of the handwriting as a Christmas gift. To celebrate Frank Jr.'s birthday, Frank found a frozen chocolate cake that was a gift from his late mom several years ago. It dried out a bit in the freezer.
