What happens when you've spent years helping build some of the world's biggest beauty brands—and decide it's time to create one that's completely different? On this episode of The Kara Goldin Show, I'm joined by Daniel Kiyoi, Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Nocturnal Skincare. Before launching Nocturnal, Daniel built his career at iconic companies including Estée Lauder, Smashbox Cosmetics, Tarte Cosmetics, TULA, and L'Oréal. After years of helping shape global beauty brands, he set out to build one rooted in something much deeper: intentional design, cultural authenticity, and products that truly perform. Daniel shares the story behind Nocturnal, a luxury skincare brand inspired by Japandi—the fusion of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian functionality. We discuss why he and his co-founder spent four years developing the brand before launching, why they chose to begin with a single hero product, and why they believe the future of skincare is about creating fewer, smarter products that work with the skin rather than against it. We also dive into the unexpected success of the brand's now cult-favorite Japandi Knot Bag, how Daniel's Japanese heritage influences everything from product design to storytelling, and what he's learned about entrepreneurship after years working inside some of the biggest companies in beauty. Whether you're a founder, marketer, product builder, or simply fascinated by how meaningful brands are created, this conversation is packed with practical insights on patience, creativity, authenticity, and building a company with a clear point of view. Some cloudless night in September, when the air is clear, you may see birds flying across the yellow face of the moon! September is peak migration time for millions of songbirds heading south from North America to more tropical latitudes. Nocturnal migrants of the same species, such as orioles, warblers, sparrows, and tanagers, call as they fly, enabling flock-mates to stick together. Many of these flight calls are distinctive, enabling those with an excellent ear to identify them as they pass. Listen to this show in Spanish here. More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Vermont-born rock star Grace Potter releases her seventh studio album on Aug. 21. “Trespasser” is the latest offering from the four-time Grammy nominee.Potter burst onto the music scene in 2002 with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. Since that group disbanded in 2015, Potter has gone on to tour with some of the country's top musical acts, including the Rolling Stones, Kenny Chesney and country star Chris Stapleton, with whom she is touring this fall.Potter will bring her act to Burlington on Sept. 18 when her annual Grand Point North festival kicks off. Profits will go toward Potter's Grand Point Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the arts in Vermont.Potter, 43, divides her time between homes in the Mad River Valley of Vermont, where she grew up and attended high school, and Topanga Canyon, California. “Trespasser” was produced by her husband and frequent collaborator Eric Valentine. The two have a son together.“Trespasser” was partly inspired by a line from the Woody Guthrie song “This Land Is Your Land.” Potter sang it: “As I was walking that ribbon of highway, there was a wall that said private property, but on the other side it didn't say nothing. That side is made for you and me.”That idea of crossing boundaries “was the engine that was running all of my lyrical landscaping at that point.”The title song includes a refrain, “As I hurried home … I heard an icy refrain … bow to the master.” What did she mean?Potter said she wrote the lyrics “in an early round of rounding up immigrants, and it wasn't called ICE at the time. … Little did I know that a few years later there would really be this icy refrain.”Potter — who says she got kicked out of band at Harwood Union High School when it was discovered that she could not read music — said she feels she has been trespassing her whole career.“I will often get off stage and look at my bandmates or look at whoever is there side-stage and go: I just got away with it again, like I'm robbing a bank,” she said. “My passion and my commitment to basically all forms of art is mostly based on my fascination with how I'm able to get away with this over and over again. I don't think I've ever said that out loud.”“If you want a scoop,” she told me, “it's just that I continue to be rewarded for something that comes extremely naturally to me, and I'm lucky enough to have been kind of cattle prodded into it by really encouraging, inspired, wonderful family members and friends and cohorts who saw what I had better than I— better than I did.”

So, we decided to take it a step further and dive deep into the why and how of this common problem for whitetail hunters. Cover is key, not food. In these two videos, we discuss not only how to place bedding thickets on a property but also how to create them. It is key to identify the problem, diagnose it properly, and then provide the correct remedy. Bedding thickets in proper locations is key. This solution requires elbow grease, but it is long term and incredibly impactful when executed properly. Take the right steps before the season to make a long lasting impact.

The Dollar Bin Bandits welcome legendary creator Dan Brereton back to the show to talk monsters, mood, and the long-awaited return of his beloved noir-horror universe in Nocturnals: Darkly. Dan digs into the origins of the new graphic novel, why the Nocturnals characters continue to resonate decades later, and how his lush painted artwork has evolved over the years while still channeling the same spooky pulp energy fans fell in love with in the '90s. We also chats with Dan about crowdfunding, creator-owned comics, and the challenges of balancing storytelling with jaw-dropping visuals.  And for listeners looking to join the monster party, the Nocturnals: Darkly Kickstarter campaign is still accepting late pledges: http://kck.st/3NBLP5Z. Yes, it’s Good Friday but we’re being bad and bringing you a show anyway. First point of business is Clare Stephens’ elitist Easter egg power ranking Do you agree with her controversial Number One? Plus, we’re deep-diving into the Enneagram personality type obsession currently ruining our lives. It seems every A-lister and podcaster is sharing their 'number', so hold our beer. Holly is grumpy about being a 'Peacemaker' 9, Clare is proudly an 'Investigator' 5, and Emily Vernem is a Type 3 Achiever — which apparently means she’s one bad day away from becoming a psychopath. But are Enneagrams just star signs for the self-optimisation era? Also, Em has a very strict list of things you must never do in the hour before a date (hint: checking social media is a dopamine-killing trap). From 'gambling with dairy' to the peril of last-minute eyebrow tints, we’re sharing chaotic pre-date disasters. And, we’re asking the very important question: What would you queue for?
