And then he attaches a picture from Spotify that says: "Min favorit podcast er Radiovagabond" and that he's streamed a whopping 5.482 minutes. Is you're having trouble doing the math, that's  more than 91 hours. But this is not what blew my mind. It's what comes next in his email. God bedring. Hold mig opdateret.

220 CARIBBEAN: Cruising in a Pandemic to Saint Lucia, Aruba & Curaçao

BONJOU FROM THE CARIBBEAN This week I'm going to take you to three different islands in the Caribbean. We will visit an independent UN nation Saint Lucia, then head over to two autonomous islands that are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. CRUISING THROUGH THE PANDEMIC In August 2021, I explored Saint Lucia through a 12-day cruise with Celebrity Cruiselines. I was still traveling through the pandemic and knew that this would impact the cruise. There are stark differences between how we traveled back then and now.  For example, we all had to be fully vaccinated and present a negative COVID test. Instead of having a buffet lunch option during lunch, we had someone serving us lunch. However, we didn't have to wear a mask on the ship. There were also some excursion restrictions for some destinations that we visited, and I noticed that the itinerary had changed quite a bit. The original plan was that we would travel to six UN nations, and since I am one of those travelers that travel intending to visit every country in the world, this was one of the main attractions for me. I knew that this trip would see me mark my "visit 100 countries" goal.  However, that didn't happen, and I was a bit disappointed. Nevertheless, I made peace that things will not always go according to plan during a global pandemic. If you listen to the podcast, you will notice that I have touched on this in previous episodes. And sometimes, plans change during travel, and we have to accept, find solutions and move on. When you're on a cruise like this, the cruise line offers a few different tours or excursions on the port days. And because my trip happened in August 2021, we had to book a trip with the cruise line for some of the stops. That was the only way they would let us off the ship.  This is obviously to curb the spread of the virus and make sure that we only traveled with other fully vaccinated and tested people. And that was the case with Saint Lucia. DAY TRIPPING IN SAINT LUCIA I made my way through the checkpoints on the pier in Saint Lucia, and I managed to book a tram trip around the port city, the capital of Castries. The little yellow trolly train is run by a local company here in Saint Lucia, called Hibiscus Train. But then nature intervened. A rain cloud quickly came in and covered the melting hot sun almost instantly and we were almost left soaking wet on the pier (when we were sweating from the heat only moments before). Island life, hey. I grabbed a poncho and took shelter in a nearby building and waited for the downpour to subside. This kind of flash rain is a regular occurrence on these islands, as a quick cooling intermission to break up the heat. We travelled on a tram, well train, well, we weren't on tracks, so it was just a type of car dressed as a locomotive. It had a little roof thank goodness, so we had shelter from the rain. After a tour around the city with a few stops, like the cathedral The Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, we ended up at the exotic Vigie Beach, just on the other side of their tiny airport. Saint Lucia was so beautiful and the people are so friendly. Here are some interesting things that I learned. 7 FUN FACTS ABOUT SAINT LUCIA It is a small capital built on reclaimed land. Castries is the capital and largest city of Saint Lucia, the island country in the Caribbean. It's a small city in a small country, and the urban area has a population of only around 20,000 inhabitants. It is built on reclaimed land and has undergone several restorations after fire destruction. It is one of the smallest countries in the world. Saint Lucia is tiny, with 616 km 2 (238 sq miles). It is number 178 on the list of 193 (UN Nations) countries. It is smaller than Micronesia and Singapore and only slightly bigger than Andorra. (lidt større end Bornholm). The population of the country is only 184,000. It is the first country to be named after a woman. It's the first country to be named after a woman – Saint Lucy of Syracuse. It's one of just two countries in the world to be named after a woman. The other one is Ireland. Saint Lucia gained its independence in 1979 It gained its independence from Britain in 1979 after ownership of the island was swapped seven times between France & Britain in the 1800s. After 1979 it became a member of the Commonwealth. You can still feel a bit of Britain here. For example, they love playing cricket, driving on the left-hand side of the road, and English is still the official language even though 85% of the population also speak Saint Lucian Creole. It's hard to take a picture without their famous UNESCO landmark. Saint Lucia is home to the Pitons mountain range, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As the island is small, it's hard to take a picture anywhere in Saint Lucia without the two mountain peaks visible. There are 21 different types of rum in just one region. Like many destinations in the Caribbean, rum is big business in Saint Lucia. And the Roseau region just south of the capital is home to 21 different types of rum. Over 70% of the island is covered in rainforest Saint Lucia has it all, from stunning beaches to mountain peaks, and then most of the country is covered in rainforests.  MEETING A FELLOW TRAVELLER ABOARD THE CELEBRITY CRUISE Most cruise lines in the world often have a team of people planning these excursions. On the Celebrity Cruise, I met Austria-born Jennifer Weiner, the Destinations Manager for the cruise. During our time at sea, Jennifer presented and shared relevant information with us on the big theatre on the ship. When she told us that she's been to almost 100 countries, partly because of her job, this sparked my mind, given my journey, and I thought I would ask her more about her story. She mentioned that she caught the travel bug at a very young age: “When I was little, I was envious of kids who were sent far off to boarding school. I saw it as an adventure, so I begged my mother to send me off, but she wanted me close. I think this was an early indication of my desire to explore. But then at age 17, I studied in Rome for a few months, which kickstarted my wanderlust.” She even went to study business after that, but her heart was always in travel. “After attending business school in Austria, I studied at a travel institute and became a travel agent. I started travelling a bit but soon realised the benefits of the job didn't allow me to travel as much as I wanted. A friend told me about cruise ships and then I started cruising as a travel agent. During one cruise, I thought to myself that the teams working on the ships looked like they had a lot of fun, so I applied, and the rest is history.” So, through hard work and serendipitous moments, she found herself working as a Senior Destinations Manager in Celebrity Cruiselines. It's fascinating to hear her story. She also mentioned that taking a cruise is one of the best ways to get to know a destination. You also get to meet with many people and learn about different places in a relaxed setting. Going on a Caribbean cruise like this and visiting many exotic destinations is exciting for us guests. Imagine having that as your job, as Jennifer has. “It's a lot of work, especially now that I am a manager. I don't get to get out as much as I used to but I try to give my team as much opportunity to get out as possible. About 40% of my time is dedicated to travel to my favourite continents, like Africa.” OUT OF AFRICA It's funny that Jennifer mentions Africa. This episode was recorded five months ago, and I'm editing it in my Airbnb apartment in Nairobi, Kenya this week. And in just 2 days I'm going to make it to my 100th country when I travel to Uganda on Friday morning. I was telling Jennifer about my future (now current) plans to visit Kenya and Uganda for my 100th country visited milestone, and she recounts some funny stories of her time in Kenya and Uganda. “Kenya is one of my most favourite places to visit. There's just something about it that holds a special place in my heart. Maybe because it was my first African country, but I just fell in love with it immediately. I love sleeping in a tent hearing the wildlife so close. In Uganda, I had a few close calls with gorillas in Uganda but overall, I love it.” She tells me more great stories about her visit to Uganda, particularly about the time she stroked a wild cheetah. Jennifer been cruising for 9 years now – and has visited 98 countries so far, and it was interesting to hear her stories. ARUBA, OH I WANT TO TAKE YA After exploring Saint Lucia by tram trolly, we got back on the ship and spent the night cruising to another island in the Caribbean. In the morning, we arrived at the Netherlands Antilles in the south westernmost part of the Caribbean Sea. More specifically, to the first of the ABC Islands – and this is the island you probably most know from the beginning of this song. Yes, Aruba, also known as ‘One Happy Island'. The other two ABC islands are Bonaire and Curaçao. Unfortunately, Bonaire wasn't a stop on this cruise itinerary – so only from A to C. Mario Arends, Cruise Manager at Aruba Tourism Authority, was kind enough to take us around his home island. “Aruba is part of the Dutch Caribbean Islands, which originally included the 6 islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint Eustatius, and Sint Maarten) knows as the Dutch Antilles. In 1986, Aruba separated from the Antilles and became an autonomous nation within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In 2010, Curaçao and Sint Maarten did the same.” Mario tells me about the democratic government of Aruba and how it remains autonomous within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. And how the pandemic has hit the tourism industry in Aruba which accounts for about 80% of the island's GDP.  Aruba is a relatively small island, and there is so much more to do except visit the beautiful beach. You can do nature hikes, visit the nature park and do some cultural activities. Here are some TripAdvisor picks. SWINGING CURAÇAO The next day, we arrived at the 2nd of the three islands, Curaçao. It still uses the Dutch Guilder (the currency used in the Netherlands before the conversion to the Euro). I found my way to the oldest still operating pontoon bridge in the world, built in 1888. It spans 167 m (548 feet) from Punda to Otrabanda across the harbor of Willemstad on the island of Curaçao. Notable because this permanent bridge is hinged and opens regularly to enable the passage of oceangoing vessels. It swings open several times a day when boats need to go through. It is surrounded by beautifully coloured houses on each side that reminds me of a town in Copenhagen. It's called Queen Emma Bridge, but the locals call it the Swinging Old Lady. We walked across the old lady to the other side to a pink building called the Blue Experience which I was told sold the famous liquor. Unfortunately, it was closed due to the pandemic so instead, I walked around the area and found a group of guys on the pier laughing and telling jokes in a language I didn't understand. They were speaking Papiamento and one of the guys even taught me how to say thank you - macha dankie. MEET A TRAVELLING WELSHMAN IN NEXT EPISODE I do have a little bit more from the cruise in the next episode when I have an interesting conversation with another avid world traveller who's been to 96 countries. He's also a part of the Celebrity Cruise team and he's almost always on stage holding a microphone. Here's how I introduce him in the next episode: He's a public speaker, stand-up comedian, quiz master, magician, mind reader, DJ, genius dancer and arguably one of the most entertaining things to come out of Wales since Tom Jones. His name is Eddie Jenkins but on the cruise ship we all know him as "Cruise Director Eddie". You really don't wanna miss that conversation. Coming in a few days in your podcast feed. My name is Palle Bo, and I gotta keep moving. See you.     A TOUCHING LETTER FROM A LISTENER I always love getting reviews, comments and emails from listeners and followers. And this week, I would like to share this particular one. I got a very touching letter from Kenneth.  Hi Palle Bo. It's a great podcast you're producing, and I just got this from Spotify. He then attached a picture from Spotify that said: “My favorite podcast of the year is The Radio Vagabond” and that he's streamed a whopping 5.482 minutes. That's more than 91 hours! But this is not what blew my mind. It's what comes next in his email.  You have been a big part of my personal journey. Unfortunately, it's a journey I'm still on. In May I was hit by stress-related anxiety. The serious kind. To get through this hard time I started listening to your podcast. I've had it in my ears on my long daily walks and it has helped me control my thoughts and in this process, I'm still in – because listening to your exciting podcast, I've been able to focus on something else. In other words, your journey has been a big part of my inner journey and will continue to be that in 2022. It's been a tough battle for me and I hope I'm back to 100% soon. I want you to know that you are one of the people that has helped me to where I am today with your podcast. And for that, I thank you so much. Merry Christmas and happy new year. Keep up the good work. Kenneth    I can't even begin to express your email's impact on me, Kenneth. When I started this podcast in 2016, my goal was to give you tips, tricks, and ideas for your next trip. It was to let you follow my journey and maybe inspire you with my somewhat different life choice. Also, I was hoping to entertain you along the way. But if someone had told me that this podcast would be playing even just a tiny part in the recovery of stress-related anxiety, I would have said, "yeah, right." And your email came at a point where I was thinking, "I'm spending 3-4 full days just editing one 30-minute episode. What's the point? Is it worth the many hours of work I put into this"? But after reading your email, I got the motivation back, and for that, I thank you. Also, thank you for sharing, Kenneth. Get better soon. Keep me posted.   This episode is supported in part by Hotels25.com and produced by RadioGuru.co.uk.

Welcome to the latest episode of This Week in Aruba, which covers the events from Friday, June 15th to Thursday, June 21st also known as timeshare week 24. With Father’s Day coming up, the island has several events in store to honor all Dads out there.   But before that, my shoutout for this week goes to Mark Ivan who has been working hard to provide tourists with quality food and service for a long time. They’re open from 8am to 7pm and located near Aqua Windies. Do check it out! I also got clued in that Local Store will be launching a brunch menu now. Keep your eyes peeled for that information too. Things are pretty light this time of the year which is a good thing but there are some big ships that will be docking.     Lastly, we have the news section which is typically sparse but this time we actually have a quite a few things to go over including: the unfortunate closing of Legends Pub in Palm Beach (a restaurant that I was very fond of and whose owners, Scott and Leslie, I interviewed in One Happy Podcast) and some rumors going around that involve the Holiday Inn being sold to the Riu. Also, something that I’m excited about came from Amal and Peter of Alfie’s. They’re trying out this new thing on the restaurant called their Late Night Menu. Make sure to check them out! Let’s welcome back Amy White, a previous guest of One Happy Podcast back on episode 36. She’s here to tell us all about her latest vacation on the island, which just missed the Easter season.   Easter on Aruba is a very special time. Amy tells us how she witnessed the Arubans’ culture of setting up structures along the beaches to celebrate with their extended families. She describes it as being similar to a campground or the Carnival set-up. It is a unique cultural event that is incredibly interesting to learn more about and those who were on the island during that time are lucky to have been there.   Now going back to her first guesting, she told us about her discovery of the island and how she fell in love with it. Fast forward 2 years later and she is still madly in love with Aruba which will be very apparent on this episode. She also knows a lot about Aruba; having been visiting since 2002. Amy considers it as her home away from home. She also brings her 14-year-old son along to her frequent Aruba vacations.   Amy also describes the place they stayed at in great detail, which was the Caribbean Palm Village Resort. She likes that it’s peaceful and a little far away from everything without sacrificing the quality of the amenities and convenience. It has a very homey feel which is a far cry from the hustle and bustle of the highrise areas. She noticed that the guests are also much friendlier and you can really feel the spirit of the Aruban hospitality. It also has a lovely restaurant that offers great deals, free shuttles to and from the beach, some of the most visible security she’s ever seen on an Aruban resort, an orientation session, and an amazing welcome party in which the general manager comes out to introduce himself to the guests. All in all, Amy highly recommends this family-oriented, quaint, and affordable resort.   The highlights from her trip are Mama’s Food Truck and South Beach. But the best highlights of all are just the simple joy of spending time with her son and the peace of mind and relaxation that only Aruba can offer her.   ON THIS EPISODE OF ONE HAPPY PODCAST, YOU WILL:   Learn about Aruba’s bus service, and how much does it cost to ride from one end of the island to the next Know how she got a discount on a rental unit just by listening to a half hour presentation Hear about Amy’s great experience of availing a rental unit via Ebay   RESTAURANTS AND ESTABLISHMENTS MENTIONED:   Caribbean Palm Village Resort Mama’s Food Truck South Beach   If there’s anything at all that you would like to suggest for the show, or want to be a guest on a future episode, or simply want to relay feedback, please do send me an email at curt@onehappypodcast.com. Joining us on this episode of One Happy Podcast are Debbie and Hank Ecker — longtime Aruba lovers who have been visiting the island for almost 8 years — to share their Aruba story. I had the pleasure of meeting Hank down on the island so we got connected and here we are. Debbie and Hank are from Pittsburgh, my hometown, so that makes our connection special. But what's even more special is how we talk about the couple's love for Aruba, their favorite place (mine too!) Debbie and Hank first visited Aruba when it was recommended to them by a travel agent. They wanted to try a new island after visiting so many other islands in the Caribbean and various places. When they got to try the wonders of One Happy Island, they've never stopped returning year after year. Debbie and Hank are experts when it comes to trying out different hotels in Aruba. They've tried all sorts of places to stay, including both the high-rise and low-rise areas. So they're also here to give a different perspective compared to tourists who have only stayed in one or two places. We discuss their favorite restaurants in the island, specifics of Playa Linda, and favorite activities or excursions to do on the island. It's going to be a fun ride with Debbie and Hank, so hop on in! ON THIS EPISODE OF ONE HAPPY PODCAST, YOU WILL: - Learn what Debbie and Hank think about the differences between high-rise and low-rise hotels - Find out the difference between a palapa and a "chickee" - Discover a "hidden gem" of a restaurant in Aruba and why Debbie and Hank loves it so much - Hear how Debbie and Hank almost never pay for flights to Aruba using their credit card system - Discover a unique brand of swimsuits for women that hasn't made its way to the States yet - Find out what a Tahiti raft is HOTELS, ESTABLISHMENTS, RESTAURANTS, AND BRANDS MENTIONED: Tamarijn Aruba All Inclusive Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort & Casino Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort & Casino Holiday Inn Resort Aruba - Beach Resort & Casino Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino Playa Linda Costa Linda Azzurro Ristorante Italiano Tango Argentine Grill Sole Mare Ristorante Italiano Quinta del Carmen Altamar Elements Restaurant Water's Edge Restaurant Alfie's Eduardo's Beach Shack Scott's Brats Ondademar Swimwear

Strap yourselves in for a holiday season full of raucous laughter as master comedian "Aruba" Ray Ellin joins us once again to discuss the return of Aruba Ray Comedy to One Happy Island this coming 12th of November to the 20th of December.   He is truly one of the most passionate Aruba fanatics I've ever met, and soon he'll back to Aruba with his merry gang of excellent comedians to make the entire island laugh.   I sure wish I could be down there at the same time. In case you're not familiar, Aruba can get slow around the evenings without a lot of entertainment options to choose from; and no doubt Aruba Ray Comedy is the best nighttime entertainment activity that you can get in the island. I've watched the shows multiple times and every single one of them had been hilarious.   Ray and I talk about the comedians that will join him. A lot of them will be first-timers in Aruba so it's bound to be exciting! He's positive that this might end up being the best line-up in the history of Aruba Ray's Comedy. The top-notch comedians are as follows:   Des Bishop Mia Jackson Don Gavin Tony Woods Anthony DeVito Robert Kelly Tom Cotter Kerri Louise Eric Neumann Christine Hurley Tony V. Pete Lee Joey Vega Brian Scott McFadden   For more information about the line-up and shows, you can visit www.arubacomedy.com. It is encouraged for interested persons to purchase tickets online because it's more guaranteed and can save money. As an added perk, there will be a raffle after the show for a few lucky ticket holders.   If by some chance you will have to give the upcoming shows a miss due to lack of opportunities in heading down the island (like me), don't worry! Aruba Ray Comedy does a series of shows for about 3 times a year so make sure to drop by in Aruba during one. One Happy Podcast and "Aruba" Ray Ellin himself will keep you posted for any updates.   ON THIS EPISODE OF ONE HAPPY PODCAST, YOU WILL: - Learn why Aruba Ray Comedy is encouraged as an adult-only event; however, children are allowed on the parents' own volition - Hear about Ray's experience at George Clooney's Halloween party - Hear about Ray's performance at The Carney Awards in front of big time actors like William H. So here we are to finish out the last part of our play-by-play October 2017 Aruba Trip Report. At the end of episode 3, we were hanging out at Arashi beach enjoying the sunset but now we're in our living room back in Delaware, where it's a far cry from the nice and sunny weather in One Happy Island.   The last time we left off, it was Thursday around dusk. We went for dinner at Twist of Flavors, which was fantastic. We thought we would get food from the Eat Local Restaurant Month menu, but we just got what's in the regular menu because honestly, everything sounded great. Twist of Flavors was really nice. It's a small place but it has good service and tasteful décor.   Later on we headed home to unwind and play a game called Chill Out. It's basically a card game with a bunch of peppers on top. The goal is to get rid of your set of cards before anyone else. Maggie personally loves to play games with family, and we really enjoyed this one especially since we turn every game into a drinking game.   Friday morning, we woke up early to go to Mangel Halto. It was our first time there. Unfortunately Maggie and I didn't get to snorkel because we forgot to bring our snorkeling gear, but we did enjoy the scenery a lot.   Afterwards we found ourselves in one of our favorite spots in the island which we personally call Eagle Beach Adjacent. It's a little clearing between Oceania and Screaming Eagle that no one really goes to. There, we witnessed a lovely little wedding.   Following the wedding is our little detour to the Arubian Taste Rum Shop. You can sample more than a hundred different flavors of rum there. Every time we go, they seem to have a brand new flavor for us to try.   We had Alfie's for dinner that night. During our last trip to Aruba back in July, we didn't get to have poutine on Canada Day because they ran out, so we made sure we would get some this time and boy, it did not disappoint! It was as delicious as we remembered it to be.   As we got closer to the end of our trip, we made it a point to get up earlier so come Saturday morning, we were already at Palm Beach before 8 a.m. and didn't leave until around 5:30 in the evening. The rest of the day was spent with me meeting up with a new friend named Louie, and dinner at Quinta del Carmen's with our favorite waiter, Wilmer. He always takes care of us well whenever we go there. We ended the day on a pleasant note by playing Chill Out again. For us, playing cards with the family is a good way to unwind and look back on the events of the day.   Sunday was our last full day in the island so we got up early again and chose Eagle Beach Adjacent as our destination. We had about 3 and a half hours of perfect Aruba weather until it started pouring, so we got out to get pizza at a new place in Alhambra's called Hungry Piranha. It was alright; you can't really get amazing pizza in the island anyway to be honest. We went back to the beach for about 15 minutes until the rain started again so we just gave up, drove around, explored the island for the remaining hours. Dinner was spent on Chicken and Lobster which was pretty decent; funnily enough we didn't get chicken or lobster even though it's the namesake of the restaurant. The best thing about the place is the service, no doubt.   Come Monday morning, we had to deal with the sadness of parting with Aruba yet again. We headed over to Eduardo's for some snacks and Eagle Beach Adjacent for the last time to relax then straight home to finish packing before going to the airport. We had a little bit of a delay upon returning the rental car but everything turned out alright in the end. The flight back to the States was uneventful, just how we like it, and we arrived safely home around 7 in the evening.   That marks the end of our 4-part October trip series. All in all, it was a great trip and we can't wait to do it again. We hope you enjoyed the ride along with us. Whenever you feel like getting a dose of Aruba sunshine, just tune in to One Happy Podcast's numerous episodes, close your eyes, and imagine you're in Aruba.   ON THIS EPISODE OF ONE HAPPY PODCAST, YOU WILL: - Hear a few more restaurant reviews including a couple of new (for us) places - Hear about Maggie's experience with fresh aloe - Hear about an awesome wedding experience we stumbled onto - Find out what we did during our first ever Aruba rainout   RESTAURANTS AND ESTABLISHMENTS MENTIONED: Twist of Flavors Quinta del Carmen Chicken and Lobster Oceania Screaming Eagle The Arubian Taste Liqueur and Rum Shop Hungry Piranha Urataka's Eduardo's Bananas Apartments L.G. Coming up is a delectably exciting event on One Happy Island. For the entire month of October starting from October 1-31, the island of Aruba will celebrate Eat Local Aruba Restaurant Month.  This is an event which encourages tourists to explore the culinary heritage of Aruba with locally inspired dishes. On this episode, Maggie and I talk about what we know regarding Restaurant Month. Basically, it's a partnership with the tourism bureau to drum up more business for the participating restaurants. The entire goal is to draw in new customers who haven't been in the restaurant. They will do lunch and dinner specials with reduced prices in a pre-fixed menu. I would have to say that some offer a pretty good value for your money, and some not so much. But don't quote me on that, you would to check for yourself to see. All the menus are available online on the website (link provided below). So before you walk in a restaurant, you'll know exactly what to expect. During the podcast, I highlighted several places which I think nailed the idea of what Restaurant Month should be: providing value, having multiple selections, and well thought-out choices. For around 30 to 40 bucks, you will get a full meal for your money with an appetizer, an entrée and a dessert. Lastly, next month marks the 3rd anniversary of One Happy Podcast. I'm inviting you all for a party on the 24th of October at Legends Pub. The details aren't set in stone yet, but I'll make sure to update all of you in future episodes so stay tuned! On this episode of One Happy Podcast, you will: - Get an idea which restaurants on Restaurant Month will give you the best bang for your buck. - Get a rundown of the specific menu offerings from the aforementioned restaurants. - Here what some restaurants do wrong - Hear an announcement about One Happy Podcast's 3rd Anniversary celebration Restaurants taking place in Eat Local Aruba Restaurant Week: Participating restaurants include: aged. It has been a week since Maggie and I left the paradise of Aruba and we're here again to bring you the conclusion of our Summer 2017 Getaway trilogy. Don't forget to check out episode 89 and 90 for the first and second parts of this series.   I have to say, this has been one of the most laid-back vacations we've ever had. There was no adventuring involved this time. We just kicked back, relaxed, and basked in the calmness of the One Happy Island. Let me give you a summarized recount of our experience from our recent 8-day trip.   After a long work week, we couldn't wait to strap in and head out to the airport for our flight to begin our getaway. For the first time in the history of our vacations in Aruba, we didn't hit the beach on the first day which was regrettable, however, our night was a complete blast thanks to the celebration of Canada Day over at Alfie's.   This trip marked our very first 4th of July celebration in the island and now we want to do it every single year there. An absolutely breathtaking view of the fireworks from Palm Beach surrounded by friends in a great beach party? We couldn't have asked for more.   We laughed our tummies out at Aruba Ray's Comedy which we watched twice during our stay, featuring "Aruba" Ray Ellin, Pete Lee, Tony Woods, Mike Britt, Adrian Iapalucci, and Nimesh Patel. In just a couple of days, Maggie — who you may be familiar with in a lot of previous episodes — and I are heading out to Aruba for our second trip this year and we are ready to go beach hopping and have some fun in the sun!   This will be the first part of what I'd like to call our Summer 2017 Getaway trilogy. We'll be doing an episode before the trip which is this one, another episode during our trip, and then the finale, after the trip, as a post-vacation wrap-up.   The last time we went to Aruba was on March earlier this year, and now we are going back to the One Happy Island this summer just in time for the Fourth of July, in celebration of America's 241st Independence Day. This is our first time joining in the festivities while on the island and we're excited to see the fireworks display from Palm Beach. We'll make sure to have a toast for all of you listeners too.   We also talk about the things that we're looking forward to the most in this trip which include soaking up the sun in Aruba's beautiful beaches as usual, dressing up in red and white to celebrate Canada Day with friends on the 1st of July, gearing ourselves up for a night of laughter in Aruba Ray's Comedy show (EP87 went more in detail with this), having our curiosity piqued with Guy "Master of the Mind" Bavli's mind-bending performance, and of course, getting out tummies filled with delicious food. We list out a bunch of restaurants that we're planning to check out — from pubs to traditional restaurants to the most recommended places by our listeners to the best pizzerias in the island to Italian ristorantes. So many places, so few nights!   Maggie and I can't wait to see what the island has in store for us this time! We have no doubt that it will be a blast.   On this episode of One Happy Podcast, you will: - Know our favorite beaches to spend time in and admire the aesthetics of. - Get a list of restaurants that we want to check out, which YOU might want to check out too. - Find out more about the Canada Day celebration at Alfie's and how I plan on being Canadian for a day. - Hear about our experience in car rental, recommended companies, and some useful tips. - Hear about a new speed boat excursion coming to the island of Aruba   Restaurants mentioned: Alfie's Legends Pub Quinta del Carmen Barefoot Restaurant Flying Fishbone Restaurant Local Store Urataka Pizza Bob's Restaurant & Pub Casa Tua Pizzeria Amore Mio Pizzeria Yemanja Woodfire Grill Gostoso Gasparito Restaurant Twist of Flavors Restaurant Azzurro Ristorante Italiano Sole Mare Ristorante   Services, establishments, music acts, performers, and personalities mentioned: Royal Amigo The Black Sheeps Aruba Ray's Comedy Guy Bavli The Alhambra Casino Stan Lee

On Episode 83 of One Happy Podcast, the officially unofficial podcast of the island of Aruba, I am being joined by Melissa Rose.  Having just returned from her second trip to the island, Melissa is already a full-fledged Aruba-holic.  Now Melissa was just in Aruba a couple of weeks ago and was nice enough to stop by One Happy Podcast to share her Aruba story.   In this interview, Melissa tells me all about her family vacation spent with her husband and two teenaged boys.  Being a first-time vacation home renter, I was curious to hear about her experience with “Vacation Rental by Owners” (VRBO).  I was also curious to see how the rental life compared to her previous stay at an Eagle beach resort.  Melissa walks me through her family vacation including her trips to the various beaches of the island, as well as an excursion that she absolutely loves.   The reason why this episode is a favorite is because not only does Melissa do a great job of providing useful information but she does it in a way that places you there.  By the end, I almost felt like I tagged along with them on their family trip.  Even though Melissa is relatively new to the island, this interview proves that everyone has something to teach.  I learned quite a bit from my talk with Melissa and I hope you will as well.  At the very least I guarantee you will be entertained and warmed by the love she shows for One Happy Island, on episode 83 of the Officially Unofficial Podcast of the Island of Aruba. On this episode of One Happy Podcast, you will: Hear what it’s like to rent a townhouse in Gold Coast Listen to Melissa describe a buffet that you must visit if traveling with picky eaters… something for everyone. On episode 79 of One Happy Podcast, I am lucky enough to be joined by Canadians Peter and Amal Kasouf, the proprietors of Alfie’s in Aruba.  Peter and Amal discovered Aruba thanks to his father who had been a visitor for many years.  After visiting Aruba for a few years, the couple decided that maybe it was time for a change.  So, after booking an appointment to see a bar that was for sale, there live’s would be forever changed.   If you, like many visitors, don’t visit the downtown area very often, you may not be familiar with Alfie’s.  Alfie’s is a new-ish bar in the downtown area that in my opinion is going to be a destination.  Alfie’s isn’t the easiest place to find, but once you do turns out to be a real treasure.  Known for their juicy burgers and delicious poutine, to me the personalities of the owners is the real star of the show.  This is the realization of a dream by two crazy canucks who relocated and brought a bit of Canada to One Happy Island.     Not only is this episode of One Happy Podcast full of personality, there is also plenty of wisdom.  It’s not often you get to sit down and talk to someone who actually made the move from conventional four season life to 365 days of Summer. If you've ever thought about purchasing a business and relocating to Aruba, you will want to listen to this latest episode of One Happy Podcast.   On This Episode of One Happy Podcast you will: Hear the story of Peter and Amal purchasing a bar in Aruba Learn the origin of the name Alfie’s Find out why paying bills in Aruba is an all day process Get advice about what it takes to make your Aruba relocation dream come true Hear what two hard-working restaurateurs do on their one day off Restaurants and places mentioned this episode: Alfie’s in Aruba Gold Coast Aruba Links and Resources Mentioned in this episode of the show: Onehappypodcast.com One Happy Podcast Facebook Page One Happy Podcast Instagram One Happy Podcast Twitter
