Is A Buffalo Sabres Big Splash Move Imminent?

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Duane Steinel from the 2 Goalies 1 Mic podcast to discuss several topics involving the Buffalo Sabres, including if a big splash move that's surely needed is imminent this offseason. This is Duane's first appearance on the podcast and Patrick spends a few minutes getting know Duane and his podcast, part of the Built in Buffalo network. Duane first gained popularity in the Sabres fans hockey community after a memorable rant while calling into WGR 550 back in 2020 over his frustration with the organization both on and off the ice. They get into some current Sabres talk and like nearly everyone else, annoyance with the team mounts as Buffalo just missed the playoffs for a 14th consecutive season, tied with the New York Jets for the longest drought in all four of the major sports. It's clear they need to do something special this summer to get fans to start believing again, and a popular name being brought up is pending Toronto star Mitch Marner who's a noted Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen fan. Patrick asks Duane point blank if there's any chance of Marner wanting to come to Buffalo and what kind of contract it would take for it to even be a consideration. Assuming Marner's off the table (spoiler alert--he almost certainly is) Duane goes over some other potential splash moves Buffalo could make before taking the ice next season. In fact, is a move imminent? They also spend some time talking about a number of good Sabres players who are restricted free agents. Also, Alex Tuch is eligible for an extension on July 1st and what's up with the Sabres goaltending situation. That and plenty more. You can follow Duane on Twitter @DuaneS39 and check out the 2 goalies 1 mic podcast on the Built in Buffalo network.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. We consider them THE most underrated spot for wings, pizza and other great food in Western New York plus it's a great place to drink and have a great time.Special thanks to local Buffalo band, Orange Zest for allowing us to use their awesome single, “Old Friends” as the new official intro music for Talking Buffalo. Whilst some have labeled this ruling as 'Bosman 2.0', 'The Agents Angle' aims to take a pragmatic view on a subject whereby a 'major ruling' that 'will change the landscape of football' MAY not be as 'earthshaking' and an end to the current transfer system as some have said (or hoped). EMAIL : questions@theagentsangle.com SUPPORT THE SHOW via KoFi ====== SHOW RUNNING ORDER : (00:17) - Introduction to a Special Episode. > (00:55) - Overview and Brief Synopsis of the "Diarra" Case. > (02:38) - 3 Questions Examined by the ECJ (European Court of Justice). > (04:22) - Basics of the 'Diarra' Ruling. > (07:31) - Specialist Opinion on The Diarra Case - Importantly Belgian Case So With a Belgian Perspective. > (08:01) - Special Guest Interview : Willem Alexander-Devlies. > (08:54) - Overview of the 'Diarra' Decision and Ruling By The ECJ. > (13:51) - The Role of The Belgian Court So Far AND Moving Forward. > (16:48) - A European Ruling That Impacts Football Worldwide. > (18:45) - Impact on Players, Player Contracts and Registrations. > (22:06) - Impact on Football Agents, Both Long and Short Term. > (25:23) - Any Knock-On Effect for Agent Regulation (FFAR) Case at ECJ. > (29:12) - Reactions to The Diarra Ruling - FIFpro, FIFA, ECA, Agent Associations. > (32:36) - Escaping the 'Court of FIFA' & Players Buying Out of Contracts. > (37:24) - Question Marks Over FIFAs Authority & Legitimacy 'In the Face' of Numerous Challenges. > (38:51) - Diarra Ruling May Trigger More Cases Challenging FIFA Regarding ITCs and Minors. > (40:22) - Disclaimer > ====== RELATED LINKS : ATFIELD Sports Law Altius Law -- Press Release : Judgment of the Court of Justice in Case C-650/22 (DIARRA) - (PDF : English) Opinion of Advocate General Szpunar C-650/22 (DIARRA) -- ECJ - Opinion of Advocate General Rantos - Sportsperson/Minors ====== FEATURED ARTICLES : Is this the end for football's entire transfer system or not? In this engaging episode of Packernet After Dark, we dive into a rich tapestry of NFL discussions, ranging from player contributions and defensive strategies to the Packers' potential in the upcoming season. Our callers, including Ethan with his admiration for Geronimo, lay the groundwork for a series of in-depth conversations about what makes or breaks a team's defense, the intricacies of coaching strategies, and the persistent challenge of bias in NFL commentary. The debate heats up with contrasting views on aggressive defense, with insights into how the Packers can leverage this approach without falling into predictability. Jeff Haffley's coaching strategies come under scrutiny as we ponder whether the Packers' defensive adjustments are keeping pace with the evolving NFL landscape. Amid discussions on team performance, a caller's frustration with the narrative dominance of teams like the Chiefs sparks a broader conversation about the NFL's underdog stories and the potential for a "rags to riches" narrative to invigorate the league. Our focus shifts to the personal side of sports enthusiasm, with reflections on time management and the emotional rollercoaster of fandom. As we discuss the Packers' prospects in the wake of the NFC Championship game loss, there's a consensus on the need for strategic additions to the team, especially in bolstering the defense. The episode takes a lighter turn with a whimsical discussion about a unique dessert, juxtaposed against the serious business of NFL team cap space management and the implications for player signings and contract strategies. Dynasty Owner has two weekends of startup drafts in the books and this is the first opportunity that Jay and Steve have had to discuss what's been going on with those drafts. They tackle a range of issues from who's getting picked first overall, who's getting pick in the first round, how come Breece Hall has an ADP about 40 spots higher than Javonte Williams. Jay is surprised at how late Najee Harris is getting picked in these startup drafts, while Steve's surprise late pick is Rhamondre Stevenson. Shocking homer picks by the Steelers' fan (Jay) and Patriots fan (Steve). They also talk about which first round pick by ADP they got correct a few weeks ago when doing predictions. Rookie drafts start on Thursday with the beta leagues and both of them are looking forward to those starting. They discuss startup draft ADP for rookies, but caution that those ADPs might not accurately reflect how rookies are picked in the rookie drafts because of salary cap limitations and team needs. They discuss who is going earlier or later than anticipated and if either Will Levis or Hendon Hooker will sneak into the first round of rookie drafts, even though neither one has a startup draft ADP of under 100.0. There are Dynasty Owner startup drafts all this coming weekend and every weekend until the start of the NFL season. However, they have decided to pivot to something different and discuss from the dynasty perspective who has been helped and hurt the most by free agency so far. However, these are players who didn't switch teams, but were most impacted by other moves that their NFL franchise made (with a couple of slight exceptions).Which players were helped the most by the free agent moves by their NFL team (congratulations Kadarius Toney) and which were hurt the most (sorry about that D'Andre Swift). They also review Jay's article with a first round rookie mock draft for rebuilding Dynasty Owners and Steve gets Jay to give his first round order for non-rebuilders to see how much different it is.Does Bijan Robinson stay in the 1.01 slot?
