The only logical solution to wrap up our look at the original X-Men trilogy is a updated re-release of our Caravan Of Garbage review from 2019. Sure Bryan Singer is now gone (for now) but luckily Brett "The Rat" Ratner has stepped in to take his place to conclude the stories of Wolverine, Gene Grey, Professor X, Magnet, Storm, Cyclops and many more characters that would continue to never die and re-appear in future prequels and sequels. "You are a fool, Sinister! The most powerful mutants on Earth shall hunt you down to see Charles Xavier avenged!" And with this 2-part season finale, another 13 episodes of X-Men: The Animated Series are in the books! On paper, it's a pretty straightforward, conventional affair, serving as a wrap-up to Professor Xavier and Magneto's exile in the Savage Land and a bookend to the season opener starring Mr. Sinister as the show's new major villain. There's a bit of questionable storytelling as well, on the basis of some circular login at its core. Sinister lured Magneto and Xavier to the Savage Land, and in turn used the latter to bait the X-Men into his clutches as well. Which would be fine enough (albeit convoluted), if not for the fact that he already successfully captured Cyclops and Jean Grey in the season premiere and dismissed the other X-Men as beneath his care or attention. And while his motives could have evolved, the plan was already in motion to send the Professor and Magneto off to the Savage Land from the first episode of the season. Nevertheless, this finale patches over what should be a gaping plot hole through its sheer energy and commitment. What it does do well, it does very, VERY well. As a testament to the show's effectiveness in endearing its cast to the audience, several characters get big moments throughout. From Cyclops making good on his earlier threat to Sinister, to Wolverine's "Die Hard" meets "Jurassic Park" solo run through the Savage Land, to Morph's redemption after a return from (near) death, it's an impressive undertaking that all of this lands in an already stacked pair of episodes. Perhaps most memorable is Gambit and Rogue's declaration of love under less than ideal circumstances. Their first kiss manages to be powerful and convincing thanks to two seasons worth of a slow burn love story growing from mild flirtation to genuine affection, with our understanding of both characters informed by revelations about their tumultuous backstories. The climax also delivers one of the show's most fist-pumping "beat the bad guys to the beat of the theme song" action sequences, a feature that had admittedly been lacking throughout the season. Following this, there are few scenes more cathartic than seeing Sinister literally blown apart and scattered to the four winds. Even if it all doesn't quite hang together story-wise, that's pretty consistent with the comics of the era from which the season draws so much of its inspiration. At the end of the day, this finale is here to have a good time while juggling a bevy of captivating characters in a colorful setting. Although the season as a whole is less ambitious structurally than its predecessor, with its only dedicated two-parters in the beginning, middle, and end, you'd never know it thanks to the Savage Land adventure being dispersed in the form of brief vignettes to create a sense of cohesion and serialization across the standalone episodes. It's a stroke of brilliance that avoids the production and scheduling problems of the first season, allowing the true ambition to shine in the depth of character writing. The Saturday morning sensation has now done seemingly the impossible: topping itself in terms of sophistication and quality, while becoming a well-oiled machine in the process. Where could it possibly go next??

We've an actual, bona fide Hollywood movie star on the podcast this week: Professor X himself, James McAvoy. At this year's Glasgow Film Festival, the PR gods granted us ten meagre minutes with McAvoy to discuss his directorial debut, the boisterous stranger-than-fiction tale California Schemin', about two lads from Dundee who convinced the London music industry they were a rapping duo from LA. McAvoy is joined by one of his film's stars, Lucy Halliday, and they discuss the Scottish accent, McAvoy's filmmaking influences and how he goes about directing his fellow actors. On the review front, meanwhile, we discuss two very different new features. One is Orwell: 2+2=5, Raoul Peck's serious-minded essay film on George Orwell and how his writing predicted the double-speak of the modern world. The other is Fuze, David Mackenzie's fat-free thriller set in contemporary London starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Theo James trying out a rather silly accent. As they move through X2 and The Last Stand, the trio doesn't shy away from addressing the glaring missteps and missed opportunities in the franchise, especially regarding character development and story arcs. Tune in for a thoughtful and witty discussion filled with nostalgia, critiques, and a sprinkle of mutant magic! A deep dive into the nostalgia-inducing world of the first three X-Men movies, this episode of Systematic Geekology sees Kevin Schaefer, Andy Walsh, and Christian Ashley embarking on a journey to recall the pivotal moments that defined a generation of superhero cinema. They kick things off with the original X-Men film from 2000, exploring its groundbreaking approach to comic book adaptations at a time when the genre was still finding its footing in Hollywood. The trio discusses the film's significant themes, like the struggle for acceptance and the moral ambiguity of power, while also taking a critical look at its deviations from the source material. They reminisce about their first viewing experiences and how the movie introduced them to beloved characters like Wolverine, Professor X, and Magneto, all portrayed by a stellar cast that has stood the test of time. As they dissect the film, they touch on the cultural impact it had, setting the stage for a comic book movie renaissance that would follow. A blend of personal anecdotes and insightful commentary makes this segment a must-listen for fans eager to revisit the origins of the X-Men franchise. Transitioning to X2: X-Men United, the discussion shifts to the sequel that many fans consider a hallmark of superhero filmmaking. Kevin, Andy, and Christian delve into how X2 expanded upon its predecessor's foundation, introducing new characters like Nightcrawler and giving existing ones more depth and arcs that felt more balanced. The opening sequence involving Nightcrawler's infiltration of the White House is highlighted as a standout moment, showcasing not only exhilarating action but also the film's thematic depth regarding prejudice and acceptance. The hosts share their thoughts on how the film navigated complex relationships and conflicts among the characters, particularly the uneasy alliance between Xavier and Magneto in the face of a greater threat. The group also reflects on the film's legacy and its role in shaping the narrative landscape of the superhero genre, establishing a standard that many future films would strive to achieve. This segment is filled with fond memories and critical insights, making it a perfect nostalgia trip for longtime fans and newcomers alike. Finally, the episode wraps up with a candid analysis of X-Men: The Last Stand, a film that has garnered mixed reactions over the years. The hosts tackle the ambitious yet flawed attempt to merge the Cure storyline with the iconic Dark Phoenix saga, lamenting the missed opportunities to fully explore each narrative. They discuss how the film's chaotic production led to a disjointed experience, with key characters like Cyclops receiving little to no development. The conversation touches on the film's failings in comparison to its predecessors, particularly in terms of character depth and thematic resonance. Yet amidst the critiques, there are glimmers of appreciation, such as Kelsey Grammer's portrayal of Beast and the potential that the storyline held, had it been executed with more care. As they navigate through the highs and lows of the film, the trio reflects on the lessons learned from the trilogy as a whole, setting the stage for future discussions on the X-Men's cinematic journey. This final segment serves as a reminder of the complexity of adapting beloved source material and the challenges that come with evolving a franchise over time.Takeaways:The podcast dives deep into the first three X-Men movies, examining their cultural impact as they gear up for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.Kevin, Andy, and Christian share nostalgic memories of the original X-Men film, highlighting how it shifted the superhero genre landscape back in 2000.They discuss the character dynamics, particularly the complexity of Rogue and her journey, which resonates with themes of identity and acceptance.Listeners learn how the trilogy's writing struggles led to missed opportunities, particularly in portraying the characters' depth and moral complexities..Be sure to check out our merch, find extra content, and become an official member of Systematic Geekology on our website:https://systematic-geekology-shop.fourthwall.com/.Check out our other Marvel episodes:https://player.captivate.fm/collection/fb519d38-2d9b-4f82-b041-81b81613543c.Check out other episodes with Andy:https://player.captivate.fm/collection/c86f7a67-357b-4324-bf95-e42cedb9932a.Listen to every episode with Christian:https://player.captivate.fm/collection/ebf4b064-0672-47dd-b5a3-0fff5f11b54c.Don't miss any of our other episodes with Kevin:https://player.captivate.fm/collection/84fd7d06-cf1f-48e5-b358-09a01c5a6bc9Mentioned in this episode:Get Your SG Merch now!Check out the link to see all of our different t-shirts, backpacks, drinking glasses, pajamas, and more! Logan (2017) Review kicks off this week's episode of Born to Watch, and boys… this is not your usual superhero movie.Whitey, Gow and Damo head into the wasteland of 2029 to talk about the final outing for Wolverine, and right from the start the big question is asked, is this actually a superhero movie at all… or is it a western wearing claws? After nearly two decades of Hugh Jackman playing Logan, the X-Men universe throws away the colourful costumes, the CGI sky beams and the multiverse nonsense, and replaces it with dust, silence and a dying hero who just wants it all to end. This week, the boys dive into: • Why Logan feels closer to a Clint Eastwood western than a Marvel film • The emotional weight of Professor X and Logan's relationship • Laura (X-23) stealing the movie without saying much at all • The brutality and why the R-rating actually matters • Whether this is the greatest superhero film ever madeWhitey argues that this is the natural evolution of comic book movies, a character study about regret and aging rather than saving the world. Gow admits he expected CGI chaos and instead got a real film. Damo questions the timeline, the X-Men continuity and whether the emotional ending works if it doesn't match the earlier movies. The discussion also covers how Logan was clearly inspired by classic westerns, especially Shane, and why the movie works best when it forgets it's part of a franchise entirely.Hugh Jackman delivers possibly his best performance as a broken warrior who no longer heals, drinks too much, hurts constantly and carries decades of guilt. Patrick Stewart's Professor X adds heart and tragedy, while the road-trip structure slowly turns the film into something surprisingly intimate. And then… there's the ending. No big sky battle. No final speech.Just consequences. The boys debate whether Logan's death lands emotionally, if Laura is the future of the character, and why this film changed how studios approached superhero movies afterwards. Is Logan the peak of comic-book cinema? Or just a really good western accidentally starring a superhero?JOIN THE CONVERSATION Is Logan the best comic book movie ever made? Does the R-rating improve superhero films? Is this secretly just a western?Drop us a voicemail at https://www.borntowatch.com.au and be part of the show.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.Don't forget to LIKE, SUBSCRIBE and follow Born to Watch for your weekly dose of nostalgia, arguments and completely unnecessary movie rankings.#Logan #BornToWatch #MoviePodcast #Wolverine #HughJackman #XMen #FilmReview #WesternMovies #SuperheroMovies #MovieDebate
E continuano a cambiarla tuttora. On this episode, the X-Men meet the JPI-Men in the clash of the millennium. It's the concession stand kids vs the black leather mutants. James & Nick tackle the original X-Men trilogy in 2026 leading up to their appearance in Avengers: Doomsday. We discuss little known fun facts, the Bryan Singer controversy, and how this movie kicked off a quarter century run for Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. As good of a jumping off point this film was for superhero flicks, we can't help but think how much better it would've looked in yellow spandex. Thanks for tuning in. This week's episode is based on the video game Dispatch (ADHOC) our first game homage at uncommon ambience. Before each episode (level) of the game Dispatch there is a mildly animated ambient perspective. For instance, episode two of Dispatch shows a lobby, a mostly static scene, and you have buttons for “Play,” “Settings,” “Extras,” and “Exit Game” at the bottom. The ambient experience for each episode is what I live for — a liminal space to inhabit (that loops seamlessly every few minutes). Recently, I used the late-night office start screen for sleep (episode 3). Probably not ideal for my Steam Deck working all night as a noise maker. So here is the value proposition: I can make the ambient experience longer and in podcast form (with my own sounds; this is homage, not theft). If you are not familiar, Dispatch is an absolutely charming (lewd) gamified choose-your-adventure cartoon with occasional button-mashing. Set in a despotic Los Angele-ish world of superheroes and supervillains. The heroing comes with a price tag for the powerless. If you need rescuing or have a donut shop to protect, you better have a subscription with SDN (Superhero Dispatch Network). And that's how we get to “Dispatch.” In the game, you are a beaten hero forced to serve as a team leader in an emergency call center. Instead of calling 911 for fire or public safety, civillians call superheroes with capes or an angsty invisible lady who can seriously throw hands. To have a subscription to a superhero service in a world of war crimes and masked men kidnapping people off our streets — well, that would be amazing. I would love to task the Blonde Bomber with chucking a few doofuses into orbit. But Alan Moore might caution my bringing fantasy with me into the real world — pretending I have Professor X mind melting rays for that ******* who ran the red, might deliver a brief (meaningless) sensation of victory. It's less than self-indulgence.Moore spoke about the dangers of grown folks watching Batman films — a just crusader swooping in with morals and a Batarang, delivering accountability to the powerful. The danger is we accept these fantasies, of independent-actors fixing systemic problems and not interrogate our responsibilities in an unfair world. But ****, I wouldn't look askance if the future handed us comic book technology, especially if it comes with Scud the Disposable Assassin vending machines. I would go for the “Scud Lite” version, the robot that only beats the “**** out of somebody.” Ahhh, escapism.BTW, I don't know how Alan Moore would take Dispatch. Dispatch was released as a game and comic book, at the same time.Superheroes existing in a more realistic universe was Moore's lane (Watchmen, V for Vendetta), but he wasn't fond of comics being made into films, especially his. He wanted to show off what comics could do that films can't. I would love to know Moore's thoughts on Zack Snyder's chorus of the Aquaman. This is where I'm ending it.I had a bunch more paragraphs that built from a “If safe were profitable we would already be safe” — and join me on the tambourine line! That somehow led to my praising the LL Cool J Mr. Smith album which has been unfairly eclipsed by one of its singles, to landing on the track “Life As…” being on both Mr. Smith and the Street Fighter soundtrack, and finally to a Street Fighter advertisement from The Source Magazine (April '95) featuring a comic that concedes the movie is ****, but the album is dope (plus MC Hammer / Deion Sanders).AND… Tell Tale Walking Dead… I was ruthlessly mocked by coworkers in 2013 for saving Doug over Carley the TV Reporter and that I somehow had a grudge against news people. Gawd Doug sucked, but he looked to be closer to immediate peril — Carley had a gun! How was I supposed to know Carley was out of ammo.Shoehorned it, baby![[episode graphic made in photoshop]]

This week's BWN was a special one for a few reasons. It marked the first time the show was broadcast live on X and YouTube, sure. But it also saw the long-awaited official debut of the X-Men in the MCU. The latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday featured familiar characters, including Professor X, Magneto, and Cyclops. The guys break it all down for you, as well as some other big trailers for titles like Unreal Season 2, They Will Kill You, and an interesting UAP/UFO documentary, Starman (no....not a remake of the 1984 sci-fi classic). Meanwhile, the saga with WB, Paramount, and Netflix rolls onward as WB rejected an 8th attempt from Paramount for a hostile buyout, and a very prominent director drew a line in the sand against Netflix. Read transcriptListen up, mutation enthusiasts and multi-platform adventurers, because this week on Play Comics we're strapping on our Kevlar suits and diving straight into the bewildering, beast-infested, cross-console chaos of X-Men: The Official Game! We're talking about the 2006 game that launched on practically every system known to mankind (GBA, GameCube, Nintendo DS, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. Seriously, did they forget a platform?), which based the story nominally on the third X-Men film from Fox. You know, the one that showed us what happens when Professor Xavier and Magneto finally decided to outsource their beef settlement to a video game developer. This particular romp through Marvel's merry mutant universe was brought to you by the folks who looked at a film featuring Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Iceman and thought, “What if we made this game SLIGHTLY different on each platform?” It's like they were challenged to see just how elastic the definition of ‘the same game' could be, and frankly, the results are beautifully inconsistent. The story was co-written by Chris Claremont (yes, THAT Chris Claremont) and Zak Penn, and it featured voice acting from the actual film cast, which means you got Hugh Jackman's growl in your living room, your handheld, and probably also your neighbors' living rooms at 2 AM. Joining us to make sense of this portable and stationary pandemonium is none other than Alex Zalben from Comic Book Club, a weekly live talk show about comics that's been running since 2006, performed at every major comic convention you can think of, written up in the New York Times more than once, and hosted literally hundreds of guests with more swagger than most podcasts muster in a lifetime. Alex is a writer, editor, and podcaster who knows his way around both four-color storytelling and video game adaptations, making him the perfect guide to help us determine whether this cross-generational, cross-console adventure managed to capture what makes the X-Men actually work, or if it just made us wish we could teleport away from our screens. So sync up your Danger Room protocols, pick your favorite handheld or home console, and get ready for an episode that's guaranteed to be more chaotic than a Sentinel factory explosion and infinitely more confusing than trying to figure out why THIS game exists on THAT console! Learn such things as: Who thought it was a good idea to put this on so many consoles? Is it possible to get that team feeling when you're playing solo? Is it better to look at this game as a sequel to the 2nd movie, or a prequel to the 3rd movie? And so much more! You can find Alex on YouTube @ComicBookClub and of course Comic Book Club Live. Ryan, Maddy, and Todd celebrate the holiday season in the best possible way, which is reading the season finale of The Mutant Ages: The Comic Book. Our heroes finally confront the Council of Xaviers, with the help of Cloaky, Pluggy, and any number of our characters with an axe to grind against Professor X. Also, Santa is there, because this is a holiday special. The audio for the reading is ripped from our YouTube livestream on Dec. 21, so it preserves all of our naturalistic interruptions and is therefore a bit more messy than your typical read-through might be, but that's all part of the charm, right? Welcome to the place where I get to let my geek flag fly and talk about all things geek. Basically a fuzzy guide to life, the universe, and everything but mostly geek stuff. This is where I look into the world of geekdom and some geek news, comics, The Simpsons, Star Wars, and whatever randomness finds its way onto the recording. This level of the podcast is another conversation all about the surprising and shocking moments in comics, movies, and TV. In this weeks episode, we explore one of pop culture's & our childhoods greatest philosophical duels: Professor X vs. Magneto — not just as comic-book icons, but as mirrors for our own inner conflicts. Is it better to change the world through understanding, patience, and inclusion… or through force, disruption, and uncompromising conviction? Both Magnet and Professor X both had the right ideas of wanting inclusion and to be excepted they just had different ways of going about it. It raises the question of manipulation vs a direct approach. Which one is more effective and which one is morally correct. There's often many different approaches to situations in life however does that make one better than the other. We dive deep into this topic and which side we would be on if we had to pick.
Today on Too Opinionated we sit down with actor Cam Clarke. For many American families, the King family defined Christmas entertainment. "Now They're All Here: The King Family, Over 100 Years of Entertainment From America's First Family of Song" is a not only a complete history of the famous King family, but a story of author, Cam Clarke's, life in front of and behind the camera. "Now They're All Here: The King Family " is more than just a celebration of television history; it's a family album from one of America's most iconic entertainment families. The King Family has been performing together (and with solo careers) since the 1920s: vaudeville, radio, musical films of the 1940s, kitschy sci-fi from the 1950s, tours across the country, recordings in musical genres from jazz and big band to Broadway and pop—even cartoons and video games. Cameron Arthur Clarke is an American voice actor who is known for voicing Leonardo and Rocksteady from the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, Shotaro Kaneda from Akira, Freddy from the Barnyard franchise, Liquid Snake from Metal Gear Solid, Clay Kaczmarek from Assassin's Creed II and Simba from The Lion King franchise whenever Matthew Broderick is unavailable. Cam is also known for being the voice for Snoopy (Snoopy the Musical/Talking Snoopy Doll), Max Sterling in Robotech, He-Man in the 2002 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, the tween idol, Heath Burns, in the original Monster High, and Professor X in several X-Men properties. Rather than rescuing Professor Xavier, who has been captured by Factor Three, the X-Men have to make a detour to Subterranea. The underground world is home to two villains, Mole Man and Tyrannus. Today's episodes cover their backstories before diving into the villains' conflict with the X-Men in Uncanny X-Men #34.Issues covered: Incredible Hulk #5, Fantastic Four #1, Tales to Astonish #80-81, Uncanny X-Men #34
"You took away everything I had. Everything I ever was!" After an explosive mid-season 2-parter, X-Position returns with a pair of stand-alone episodes picking right back up with the familiar character-focused format. And while another three episodes remain, these installments will actually round out the character spotlights that have come to define the show's second season. "A Rogue's Tale" functions as something of an origin for its titular character, as ghosts of the past come back to inform events in the present. It's a crunchy, lore-heavy episode no doubt satisfying for longtime X-Men fans, featuring a deep dive into Rogue's tortured past, tutelage under Mystique, and a prominent role for Ms. Marvel all reframed to fit the context of this animated universe. It smartly puts Professor Xavier's disappearance to use as a plot point, making clear that the central conflict is only made possible by his absence. Less satisfying is its conclusion, which essentially confines an innocent woman to solitary confinement and calls it a day. While far from being presented as a happy ending, it's unclear where the show ultimately lands on the existential question of how Carol Danvers' disembodied consciousness should be regarded - resulting in some muddled messaging ethically. On the other side of the coin, "Beauty and the Beast" takes a closer look at Dr. Henry McCoy's interior life, a topic that is naturally of heightened interest given how little time viewers have spent with him relative to other characters. Aside from a quick scene of Hank reminiscing over some family photos, this episode is differentiated from the season's other character studies in that it is largely unconcerned with mining its protagonist's past. The approach makes sense given Beast's relatively stable upbringing. Despite his "heteromorphic" appearance, Beast has largely been presented as the character most at ease with his mutation and public image - whether as a mutant, accomplished scientist, or pardoned felon. Hitting Hank where it hurts the most means discrediting his accolades and good nature - and most pointedly, dashing a promise of love that he has long denied himself - solely on the basis of him being a highly visible mutant. All put to great effect by the militant anti-mutant Graydon Creed. It gives Beast the rare opportunity to cut lose while Wolverine employs the art of subterfuge in a satisfying role reversal, capped off with Creed's ironic comeuppance. X-TRA: Another version of these episodes might have seen their otherwise disparate plots woven together by way of a common element: none of other than Mystique. While Rogue's upbringing by Mystique is the driving force in "A Rogue's Tale," we also have one side of Graydon Creed's parentage revealed in "Beauty and the Beast." Sabretooth is confirmed to be Creed's father, but his mother in fact being Mystique remains a mystery for another day. Despite this familial connection, the latter is actually the only episode of the season in which Rogue does not appear.
On this episode of The To The Outer Limits, we review “The Sixth Finger.”Joining me are storytellers Gabriel Hardman, Jeff Parker, and Ande Parks.t's the story that dared to ask what happens when humanity fast-forwards its own evolution—and the answer, as usual, isn't pretty. Starring a young David McCallum years before The Man from U.N.C.L.E., this 1963 classic turns the lab experiment trope into a gothic tragedy, complete with telepathy, hubris, and a proto–Professor X look that must have haunted comic readers who saw it first-run. Joining me for the discussion are three of my favorite storytellers who know a thing or two about pushing human potential to the breaking poin Together we'll talk about the episode's influence on pop culture and comics—from McCallum's transformation makeup to its echoes in The X-Men, Planet of the Apes, and every “science-goes-too-far” story that followed.
