Bill Betts engages in an enlightening dialogue with Crystal Lee, a distinguished business coach specializing in the pet grooming industry, and Tim Seymour from Profit First Professionals. The pivotal focus of this episode revolves around the innovative financial management system known as Profit First, which advocates for a paradigm shift in how business owners perceive and allocate their profits. By altering the traditional formula of sales minus expenses equals profit, the Profit First methodology encourages entrepreneurs to prioritize profit from the outset, thereby fostering a more sustainable and profitable business model. Through this discussion, I gain valuable insights into the practical applications of Profit First within the context of the pet grooming sector and the broader implications for financial health in small businesses. The episode serves as a comprehensive resource for pet grooming professionals seeking to refine their financial strategies and enhance their business operations.Takeaways: The Profit First methodology emphasizes the importance of prioritizing profit by allocating funds to a separate account before expenses are accounted for. Business owners often struggle with understanding their finances, leading to reactive rather than proactive financial management, which can result in unexpected tax liabilities. The Profit First system encourages a disciplined approach to financial planning, helping business owners forecast and manage their income and expenses effectively. Implementing Profit First can lead to a mindset shift, where individuals begin to view their finances with greater clarity and confidence, ultimately improving their financial health. Regularly reviewing and adjusting allocation percentages within the Profit First system enables business owners to optimize their financial strategies over time. Establishing a series of dedicated accounts for profit, expenses, taxes, and owner's pay can simplify financial management and enhance overall business profitability. Rocky Lalvani is the Founder and CFO of Profit Comes First, which advises coachable, forward-thinking business owners to boost their companies' profits. As a certified Profit First Professional, he implements Mike Michalowicz's Profit First System to help clients maximize their profit potential. Rocky is also the host of the Richer Soul podcast and the Profit Answer Man podcast. In this episode: Many business owners are great at delivering their product or service, but when it comes to managing profitability and cash flow, they're often flying blind. They may experience growth, but money still feels tight, and financial clarity remains elusive. How can leaders build systems that ensure sustainable growth and healthy profits? Profitability and cash flow expert Rocky Lalvani explains that overlooked financial systems can cause hidden inefficiencies and missed opportunities. Using a structured approach — like the Profit First system — can help owners allocate funds, manage expenses, and prioritize profitability from the start. Additionally, entrepreneurs can analyze their financial health in areas including revenue generation, profitability, and cash flow. By aligning employee metrics with profitability, optimizing pricing, and building scalable processes, business owners can enhance these areas. In this episode of Systems Simplified, Adi Klevit sits down with Rocky Lalvani, the Founder and CFO of Profit Comes First, to discuss building systems that boost profitability. Rocky shares the difference between scaling and growing, why many businesses grow themselves into cash crises, and how to embed a profit-minded culture throughout an organization.

Mark Coudray is the Founder and Principal Advisor of Catalyst Plan, a program that helps businesses achieve growth and profitability. He is also the Founder and Principal Advisor of Coudray Growth Technologies, a firm specializing in business coaching and consulting for the screen printing industry. With over five decades of experience, Mark began his career by establishing a screen printing business at the age of 19. He was also recognized as the Profit First Professional of the Year in 2019. In this episode: Many businesses struggle with sustainable growth, often facing challenges related to inefficiencies, cash flow management, or customer retention. Without the right systems in place, companies may find themselves in a cycle of stagnation and financial instability. How can businesses implement strategic processes to achieve long-term success with minimal effort? According to business growth expert Mark Coudray, achieving profitability and scalability requires a data-driven approach that focuses on optimizing operations and leveraging specific financial strategies. QFF: Quick Fire Friday – Your 20-Minute Growth Powerhouse! Welcome to Quick Fire Friday, the Grow A Small Business podcast series that is designed to deliver simple, focused and actionable insights and key takeaways in less than 20 minutes a week. Every Friday, we bring you business owners and experts who share their top strategies for growing yourself, your team and your small business. Get ready for a dose of inspiration, one action you can implement and quotable quotes that will stick with you long after the episode ends! In this episode of Quick Fire Friday, host Michael Denehey interviews Mike Michalowicz, author and keynote speaker, and discusses his revolutionary Profit First methodology. Highlighting the pitfalls of traditional profit models, Mike shares actionable insights on prioritizing profit to transform businesses and improve financial health. His approach is based on channeling behavior rather than discipline, offering solutions that resonate with small business owners globally. A standout success story involves a struggling horse farm in Australia, where adopting Profit First not only turned profitability around but also strengthened the owners' personal relationships. Other Resources: Profit First: Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money-Making Machine Key Takeaways for Small Business Owners: Prioritize Profit First: Flip the traditional profit formula from "Sales - Expenses = Profit" to "Sales - Profit = Expenses." By setting aside profit first, you ensure your business operates within its true financial means. Set Up a Profit Account: Create a dedicated bank account for profit. Even allocating just 1% of your revenue to this account builds the habit and ensures consistent profitability over time. Automate Cash Management: Use Parkinson's Law to your advantage by allocating funds into specific accounts (e.g., profit, owner's pay, taxes). Automation minimizes temptation and ensures disciplined cash flow management. Our hero crafts outstanding reviews following the experience of listening to our special guests. Are you the one we've been waiting for? Reward Yourself as the Owner: Separate your wages for working in the business from profit, which is your reward for taking the risk of starting and running the business. Celebrate even small victories to stay motivated. Profitability Over Debt Dependency: Profitability is the key to eradicating debt. Allocate a portion of your profit to pay off debt while rewarding yourself with a small percentage to maintain morale. Start Small, Start Now: Don't wait for the perfect moment to implement change. Begin with small, manageable steps like opening a profit account and allocating a small percentage of revenue. Gradually scale up as you adjust to the system. One action small business owners can take: One action small business owners can take, according to Mike Michalowicz, is to set up a profit account and allocate at least 1% of every revenue deposit into that account. This simple step helps build the habit of prioritizing profit and ensures that, over time, your business will start to accumulate funds for growth and financial security. This action doesn't require changing your business operations but establishes a crucial financial discipline that can lead to long-term success. Do you have 2 minutes every Friday? Lauren and Rocky open up the conversation talking about what success means in business. Most business comes down to math, and simple math at that. If you sit down before starting a business and do the math, you should have an idea about whether the business can be successful. The conversation takes a turn towards cash washes, which Lauren welcomes. Is this really becoming as oversaturated as it seems? Lauren then asks Rocky to demystify and differentiate “money” in business: revenue, profit, cash. A huge key to understand here is that you can have a profitable business that runs out of cash. This occurs when you try to grow too fast. Not enough business owners understand this! Rocky also points out that you should be aware of some initial success, and that it won't necessarily continue. He also recommends using conservative numbers when “underwriting” your business plan. Lauren then asks Rocky about buying a business. Is that easier than creating one? You should take into account how much involvement the owner has, the client number and mix, and more. This is when rocky explains the Profit First system, which is very like paying yourself first in the personal finance realm. Speaking of personal finance, Rocky touches on the importance of separating personal and business finances. Rocky closes with reminding people to do the math before they start (or buy) the business they're considering. He warns us about going into franchises. It should make business sense, not passion sense. If you liked this episode, you'll also like episode 67: Starting Your Own Business or 140: Online Businesses.
