Whelp, Mom is in the hospital again, so it's time for another cocktail! Update: she's out of the hospital and in a rehab where she is making excellent progress! So cheers to that! Bootie first learned about the Bobby Burns cocktail from Darcy Cameron, the owner of Shibui yarn on her blog, Shibui Life. Bootie and Bossy did not have the required Scotch (or Benedictine, or Absinthe, well, ok, Bootie had the absinthe but is keeping the bottle purely for aesthetic reasons), so they used what they had on hand, and it was delicious. As for Robert Burns, a.k.a. Bobby or Rabbie, he is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and an early promoter of the Romantic movement. When he wasn't farming and writing poetry, he was quite busy fathering children (12!). His birthday is celebrated on January 25th, and many toast him with this cocktail. In addition to writing the New Year's classic, "Auld Lang Syne", he wrote this gem, "The Answer" (can't you just here the Scottish brogue?):Ev'n thena wish (I mind its power) A wish, that to my latest hour Shall strongly heave my breast; That I for poor auld Scotland's sake Some useful plan, or book could make, Or sing a sang at least.Bootie and Bossy review the book A History of the World in 6 Glasses by Tom Standage. We loved how he highlighted the fascinating details about beer, wine, distilled drinks, tea, coffee and Coca-Cola while putting them in the context of larger and broader historical trends. We also give some knitting updates.

Ryan and Todd analyze Freud's essay "The Uncanny" and the broader implications of this concept. They discuss the importance of the uncanny for understanding the horror film and focus on the difference between a psychoanalytic approach to the concept and the notion of the uncanny valley. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Subscribe on Android or Subscribe on Google Podcasts Marsha's Projects: I finished spinning the two 8 ounce braids I bought at Black Sheep Gathering. A Corriedale cross and 70/30 merino/silk. I have seven skeins (two ply of each single) and have about 1,790 yards/16.6 ounces. I think it is fingering weight or a very light sport. Happiness by Kyle Kunnecke using Yarn Snob PowerBall in the colorway Happiness. I have finished the front and have knit about 3” of the back armhole. Spinning: I have started spinning the Manx Loaghton again. I have spun 768 yards, or 15.2 ounces, of a 2 pound bag of roving. I've started spinning on this again. This spinning project is going to be in the works for a while. Kelly's Projects: Finished spinning and plying yarn from a black Shetland. This fleece was purchased in 2017 at the Monterey County Wool show. I got 1,290 yards out of 19 ounces. I've continued carding the Wensleydale X Cormo from Black Sheep Gathering in 2016. On average the fiber is about 4 inches long and very fine. It isn't carding up like a long wool at all. The staple length is longer than the Shetland, but the batts are super dense and puffy like a cormo or a merino would be. I won't be spinning this right away since I need a break from spinning black yarn! I'm still considering which of these blankets to make, but now I'm leaning toward the knitted Creeper. Minecraft Blanket Creeper Blanket Adventures From our listener Wendy: “Hi there! Love your Podcast...you asked about my LYS...well, I live in New York but my favorite LYS is River City Yarns in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada...the owners, two sisters, (Barb and Cynthia) have been absolutely wonderful at creating, and maintaining, an amazing fiber community which has helped sustain its members throughout this pandemic. Most of us have never met and live thousands of miles apart...yet, we are friends....I will be forever grateful for friendship, the tutorials, knitting supplies, quick shipping and fiber information as well as the ongoing Monday evening Zoom meet-up. Check out their Podcast on YouTube. They deserve to be recognized. They have online classes going almost every week with nationally recognized instructors, constant KALs and this summer they assisted with and participated in an online summer-long yarn store crawl wherein each Sunday 4 yarn stores are given 15 minutes each to introduce themselves and their specialty areas. Except for River City Yarns, all of the stores are located in the US. Through this program, I discovered a weaving supply shop in Texas; through which I placed and already received my first order... I've knit a lot of years and I've never seen store owners work this hard to inspire and motivate people.” Thank you Wendy for letting us know about Barb and Cynthia and their yarn shop. Listeners may message us stories of their favorite LYS or send an audio story via Speakpipe. Wool Show judging at the Monterey County Fairgrounds: Kelly attended the judging and tells us about the variety of fleeces she has her eye on when the auction takes place September 4th. Marsha plans to attend Fiber Fest in the Valley October 1st, 9:00am - 4:00pm Ellensburg, Washington Summer Spin-In Started June 1 and goes until September 5. (US Labor Day) If you are on Instagram use #summerspinin2022. You can also post in the Ravelry group. Part 2 of the Chaser's conversation with Nicholas Pollacchi of Shibui Japanese Whisky. Bobby drinks a rice whisky...will he like it? Don't miss this one!
The first and best news, Tonia is home. Teaching herself to mend in order to stave off boredom, and providing a lap for grateful pets who are as relieved that she is home as I am. For the first time ever, I'm using Susie Myer's contiguous top down method for set-in sleeves to knit Against All Odds in Shibui linen yarn. It's easier than the row by row directions make it seem. Plus, some general musings on sweaters.
Join the Chasers as they chat with Nicholas Pollacchi of Shibui Japanese Whisky. They laugh, they cry....well, Bobby cries because its his dry week...everyone else laughed. Join in on the fun!

In this fascinating deep dive on Japanese Whisky, past and present, some of the topics I discuss with Nicholas Pollacchi of Shibui Whisky include: The complicated history of Japanese whisky making, including the sharp left turn that makes this tradition diverge (and reconnect) surprisingly with other world whisky traditions. How Shibui is looking to help Japanese distillers and master blenders embrace a new, more collaborative mindset and source more compelling cooperage. Then, we embark upon an ambitious, 7-spirit tasting that spans Shibui's Niigata and Okinawa collections, showcasing wheat, malt, and rice whiskies from some of Japan's best artisan distillers. During this tasting, we cover the nuances of different grain bases and barrel finishes (including the legendary mizunara oak grown in Japan), as well as different ways to think about Japanese whisky in the greater world whisky landscape. Along the way, we discuss the difference between whisky and Okinowan Awamori, the effects of colonialism on the Japanese approach to distilled spirits, what to drink with legendary Scotch distiller William Grant, and much, much more. This episode is brought to you by Near Country Provisions. Earlier this year, Japan's whisky makers agreed on a voluntary definition for "Japanese Whisky" after decades of quietly blending their own whiskies with imported whiskies from Scotland, Canada, and elsewhere. That new definition requires "Japanese Whisky" to actually be fermented, distilled, and matured in Japan, while whiskies blended with imports are now to be labeled as "world blends." The change has put Japan's whiskies under increasing scrutiny and demands for transparency, and one American-based upstart launched its whiskies last October with transparency in mind. While Shibui produces "world blends," it also works with distillers on the island of Okinawa to create single grain Japanese whiskies made from rice. Shibui co-founder Nicholas Pollacchi explains the difference on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. We'll also talk about Danish Whisky and a Whisky Danish, too...
There are a lot interesting words and phrases in the Japanese language that don't really exist in the English language. For example, "Koyo", which is a word to mean the autumn leaves changing colour. The Japanese also like to create words that represent sounds and emotions, called Onomatopoeia (Jiyongo / gidaigo) that for non-native Japanese people are difficult to make sense of. Some of the ones we talk about on this episode are words for things that age gracefully, a word for the action of buying books but not reading them, taking walks in the forest to enjoy the natural energy of trees and foliage, starting something new but giving up on it very quickly, and much much more. "Shibui recalls the beauty revealed by the passage of time. Inheriting in an aesthetic of calm – colours subdued and brightness muted – this word reminds us to appreciate the things that improve with age. There is a grace in maturity, and the experiences of life mark their objects with a pleasant richness. You might experience shibui in the colour of leaves in early winter, or an old teacup on a table…” - Ikigai And Other Japanese Words To Live By, Mari Fujimoto Adrienne Ceramics is a pottery brand that was established by Singapore-based potter, Jeanette Wee. Sponsor: Shibui Knits was born in 2007, in the basement of Darcy Cameron’s yarn store Knit Purl in Portland, Oregon.
