When you view failure through the right lens, things can change for you.  In this episode, we discuss how I had a reminder of how failure can be viewed to make you better, if you can only separate yourself from the emotion of it. Our latest attempt at 3D printing the Mandalorian Helmet didn't have the results we wanted, but it reminded me failure is part of the journey. Craig is new to beekeeping and has been absorbing all or my videos and podcasts on Patreon and offered to lend a hand for a few days so not wanting to turn away any help I swapped around the workload a little so we could get over to the workshop and clean up the rather large stack of frames and boxes that needed cleaning instead of extracting honey. A lot of the boxes are left over from the early season oilseed rape extraction where we had to cut out the comb and honey as it had granulated in the frames and couldn’t be extracted in the normal way. This leaves lots of frames that need to be roughly scrapped and tied into bundles before being boiled and cleaned ready to take fresh foundation in the Spring next year before going back out onto the hives. We also scrape out the supers and scorch them lightly as part of our ongoing disease management and this also entails removing frame runners and either washing them before replacing or if they’re too badly damaged we replace them. I think I might have mentioned before that I’m switching my super frames over to Manley frames, these are the straight, wide sided frames instead of the more traditional SN1’s or SN4’s, SN1’s are the narrow straight sided frames for supers and SN4’s are the Hoffman style spacing. It’s interesting that there are so many different types of frames that you could use and each beekeeper no doubt has a favourite. The same applies to the frame runners in the supers, I’ve always used castellated runners with set spacing for ten frames although I have tried eleven and nine frame runners. The point here is you start of using frames with foundation that have eleven frames meaning the frames are placed closer together and hopefully the bees draw out the foundation perfectly straight before progressing to ten frame runners and finally nine frame runners thereby getting more honey per frame which ultimately means less frames to extract. The trouble with this is if you have more than a few supers it can get a bit confusing when you think you’ve got ten frame spacing and it’s eleven or nine. Add to that the need to get everything organised and in it’s prope

Bridged pentavalent carbon structures can be intermediates or transition states of cation rearrangement during SN1 reactions, and short-lived ion pairs explain net stereochemical inversion. The different perspectives of preparative organic chemists and mechanistic organic chemists on reaction yields are illustrated by a study designed to demonstrate that molecular rotation can be rate-limiting in viscous solvents. “Electrophilic” addition to alkenes is the reverse of E2 or E1 reaction, and its mechanisms can be studied by analogous techniques. The NIST Webbook provides thermochemical data to help understand the relative stability of isomeric alkenes. Preliminary X-ray analysis of molecules that have been designed to favor a carbon with five bonds seemed to suggest the possibility of a pentavalent intermediate in SN2 reactions, but further analysis of these structures showed just the opposite. Boron, however, can be pentavalent in such an environment. E2, SN1 and E1 mechanisms compete with the SN2 reaction. Factors controlling E2 eliminations are illuminated by kinetic isotope effects, stereochemistry, and regiochemistry. The competition between E2 and SN2 mechanisms influence the design of synthetic schemes, including those in which carbon nucleophiles play an important role. SN1 and E1 reactions involve carbocation intermediates and thus the possibility that the carbon skeleton will rearrange. One of the main challenges in photochemical energy conversion is the design of charge separating units which are able to generate a long lived charge separated state, and to couple efficiently to an energy storage state. In part I of this work the energy conversion efficiency of a photochemical unit inspired by bacterial photosynthesis is investigated. The developed model is based on non-adiabatic multi step electron transfer to generate a trans-membrane potential gradient. Upon optimization with multi objective genetic algorithms, the biological strategies for high quantum efficiency in photosynthetic reaction centers are derived, which have to suppress loss channels such as charge recombination. The concepts of bacterial photosynthesis are extended to the design of artificial photochemical devices. The unified model consists of a charge separation unit and an energy storing system whereby the coupling between both units is assured by thermal repopulation according to the principle of detailed balance. The complete photosynthetic unit is characterized by the respective current-voltage relation and an upper limit for the overall energy efficiency is derived under AM1.5 global conditions. Such a realistic chemical solar energy conversion system can reach efficiencies, which are comparable to the limits of an ideal single-junction solar cell. In Part II of this work the reactive dynamics of two surrounding controlled photoreactions is investigated on a microscopic scale. In general the effect of the surrounding can be classied into intramolecular contributions, like steric or electronic effects, and intermolecular contributions like the solvent or the embedding in an enzyme. Both limiting cases are examined on the basis of two generic photoreactions. The Dewar DNA lesion follows quantitatively from the 6-4 lesion by UV-A/B irradiation and constitutes the stable end product of continuous solar irradiation. Here the detailed mechanism of the formally 4π-sigmatropic rearrangement is presented, which predicts that only in the (6-4) dinucleotide the Dewar is exclusively formed from an excited valence state, but not in the free base 5-methyl-2-pyrimidinone (5M2P) nor with a sliced backbone. The mechanism is elucidated by the analysis of conical intersections which show, that the photochemical deactivation of T(6-4)T is strongly in influenced by the confinement in the dinucleotide, leading to T(Dewar)T formation, whereas in 5M2P the photophysical protection is ensured by a conical intersection seam. The implementation of the ONIOM-method into the non-adiabatic mixed quantum classical dynamics allows to follow the formation of the T(Dewar)T lesion as well as the competing photophysical relaxation. C=O-vibrations are identied as unambiguous spectroscopic probe of the 4π-sigmatropic rearrangement for highly sensitive UV/VIS pump - IR probe experiments which were successful in following the reaction in real time. As a second photoreaction the ultrafast phototriggered reaction of benzhydryl cations with methanol is investigated. The mechanism of the laser induced generation of highly reactive benzhydryl cations from the precursor molecule diphenylmethyl chloride is derived by quantum chemical and quantum dynamical methods. For the competing reaction channels of ion pair and radical pair formation the interaction of different electronic states leads to ultrafast bond cleavage. The homolytic bond cleavage as a parallel reaction-channel is already accessible in the FC region by the participation of lone-pairs of the Cl-leaving group. Based on ab initio data a system Hamiltonian is derived which is suitable to describe the multidimensional dissociation process in a reduced reactive coordinate space. Quantum dynamical calculations show that bond cleavage induced by a Fourier limited femtosecond laser pulse provides the ion pair despite its higher potential energy and the existence of conical intersections. The subsequent bimolecular bond formation, which constitutes the second part of the SN1 reaction, is investigated by on-the-fly molecular dynamics simulations in a micro-solvation approach. The calculated solvation correlation function and time resolved UV/VIS spectra are compared to recent experimental findings. By the detailed microscopic description the assignment of the spectral features to different molecular events is possible. The results show that the rising spectral signature of the generated benzhydryl cations is not directly correlated with the bond cleavage, a fact that has to be considered in the interpretation of the signal for a complete understanding of the reaction mechanism.

Benzhydrylium ions, which have previously been characterized as reference electrophiles in the Mayr group, have been employed for the construction of general nucleophilicity and electrophilicity scales. The kinetics of the reactions of benzhydrylium ions with 15 n-nucleophiles in water and DMSO were measured to yield the N- and s-parameters. Most of the nucleophiles have closely similar slope parameters indicating that the reactions of most n-nucleophiles approximately follow Ritchie's constant selectivity relationship. The different slope parameter for water is recognized as the main reason for deviations from the Ritchie relationship reported in 1986. The rates of the reactions of benzhydrylium ions with solvent mixtures of variable composition have been determined. From plots of the first-order rate constants (log k) versus E of benzydrylium ions, the solvent nucleophilicity parameters are derived. This allow the systematic design of Friedel-Crafts reactions with solvolytically generated carbocations. Rate constants for the reactions of laser flash photolytically generated benzhydrylium ions with chloride and bromide anions have been determined in various solvents and compared with literature data. The rate constants for the ionization of benzhydryl halides and for the reactions of benzhydrylium ions with halide anions and with solvent are combined to give complete free energy profiles for solvolysis reactions. The first SN1 reaction, where ionization and trapping of the carbocation by the solvent could directly be observed, is reported.

Competition experiments have been performed to determine the relative reactivities of 23 alkyl chlorides toward allyltrimethylsilane in the presence of catalytic amounts of ZnCl2.The krel scale spans over 11 orders of magnitude from 1-adamantyl chloride (least reactive) to bis(p-methoxyphenyl)methyl chloride (most reactive compound). A fair correlation between the alkylating ability and the SN1 reactivity in solvolysis reactions is found, thus providing a quantitative basis for our long-standing working hypothesis that Lewis acid-catalyzed additions of alkyl halides to CC multiple bonds only yield 1:1 products if the reactants ionize faster than the products. Trityl chlorides do not follow this correlation and are 105 times less reactive than predicted from their SN1 reactivities.
