The key to success lies in making good decisions. As solopreneurs, your decisions affect every part of your life and can lead to the success or failure of your business. Enhancing your decision-making skills can improve not only your life but your business as well. Danute Debney Shaw brings her unique perspective to teach her broad approach to decision-making. On this episode of Solopreneur Money, Danute will teach us how to expand our perceptual awareness to our decision-making skills so that we can make better choices. Her background includes over 25 years of experience in management, organization, and law which spans broadcasting, corporate, governmental, aviation, and not-for-profit organizations. With her diverse cultural background and complex skill sets, Danute teaches others how to draw upon their inner resources to improve their decision-making skills. She has facilitated workshops in leadership, management, and personal resilience development across the United States and England. We lose our natural decision-making skills in childhood Parents want their children to grow up to be successful in the world. Unfortunately, that means teaching children to accept the knowledge that is given to them from the outside world without much prior thought. This blind acceptance leads to problems with discernment. People don't learn to trust the voice inside themselves and or understand how to deal with the information they are given. As solopreneurs, we need to learn how to move beyond our upbringing to follow our intuition so that we can make better decisions. Discerning information and improving the way you analyze decisions are keys to being successful solopreneurs. Trusting your intuition is the first step to improving decision-making skills Solopreneurs face so many decisions every day. Since there are tremendous challenges to making good decisions, we must use every resource available to us, both within ourselves and through reputable outside resources. Strengthening our awareness of opportunities, choices and challenges is the first step in developing dynamic outcomes and resolutions which will ultimately build the necessary resilience that all solopreneurs require. Learning to trust your intuition is a skill that can be built and practiced like any other. Stay in the present After learning to trust your intuition it is important to learn to be present in any situation. If you are fully focused on what is happening, you'll learn to engage consciously. Staying in the present means avoiding distractions. You can bring in your own subjective awareness once you are able to consciously engage fully in each situation. Conscious engagement will help you to appreciate your challenges, maximize your opportunities, and build your resilience. Danute offers us so much information on how we can enhance our decision-making. Learn what you can do now to improve your life and business by improving your decision-making skills. Slow down and root yourself Most of us are living frenzied, ungrounded lives that are raging out of control like a feather in a tornado. We often wear our busyness like a badge of honor. But having all of those plates spinning only leads to fear and stress. To break free from the fear and stress you need to slow down and listen. When you intentionally slow down you can ground yourself and distance yourself from the effects of the whirlwind that has become the typical American lifestyle. How to slow down Telling someone to slow down and actually doing it are two different things. Which is why I asked Dan, how? What can we do to effectively slow down in our busy lives? One thing you can do to unbusy yourself is to schedule personal time for yourself. Rather than filling your calendar for other people, save some time to schedule dates for yourself. During this scheduled meeting with yourself take the time to recharge. Think about how you recharge your batteries. Take a walk, read a book, do yoga, create art; whatever it is that you can do to care for yourself, do it and do it from a clear space of being. After your date, you should have a clear head to be able to make informed decisions that are in alignment with your authentic self. You'll be able to listen to your soul. Take action! Listen in to get more tips from Dan on how you can slow down to align yourself to make better decisions and create a better world. Do you find that the pressure of your daily work zaps your energy and ruins your mental clarity? If so, you may have an aversion toward the processes, structures, routines, and systems that are needed for emotional regulation. An ungrounded sense of self, imposter syndrome, and self-doubt can funnel people into a scarcity mindset which can cause many fears that affect business. Loraine Van Tuyl, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist and shamanic ecopsychologist who offers sensitive souls and intuitive empaths who are overwhelmed by modern-day life tools they need to protect and funnel their energy into the structures that support their biggest visions and missions. In this episode of Solopreneur Money, you'll learn how to ground yourself and ground your energy so that you can boost your productivity. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... What is a soulpreneur? [3:12] Loraines entrepreneurial journey [7:10] Making sure you don't become a longer, stronger caterpillar [17:32] How Loraine created her own cocoon [22:21] How to ground your energy to boost your productivity and your life [26:10] Check for disharmony and imbalance [32:25] The money questions [40:12] How did Loraine become a shamanic ecopsychologist? Loraine grew up in the rainforest of Suriname, a small country in northern South America. Growing up, she had a hard time managing her emotions and often got caught up in others' conflicts. As an empath, she had trouble articulating her emotions. She understood that she felt more aligned in nature, but she suffered energy imbalances that took decades to identify and heal. She thought that studying clinical psychology would help heal her own energy and emotions but quickly discovered that wasn't the case. That is when she began to incorporate shamanic work into her studies. After spending decades healing herself, Loraine was drawn to help others come into their own alignment. She now uses energy healing to help empaths and other sensitive souls clear their energy and make the most of their lives. Loraine's why Loraine feels that the mystery of nature is the wellspring, gold mine, and holy grail that we've been after in our quests, big and small, for centuries, and that it's been hiding right under our noses and we keep ignoring its sirens and wisdom. She senses that the time of reckoning has arrived and we're all being called to step up. She believes that only by rediscovering our true nature and sharing our buried gifts with one another we will be able to leave the world in a better place for our children and future generations. What is a soulpreneur? As you listen to this episode you'll hear Loraine talking to soulpreneurs, notice this isn't the same as the word solopreneur that I use. Loraine's reference is to people such as writers, artists, teachers, and people interested in improving energy. Energy and soul have roughly the same meaning in this context. These words reference the spirit and the spiritual which brings to mind the meaning, the wonder, and the magic of the sacred. Soulpreneurs have an interest in promoting these things. Soulpreneurs look to align the mind, body, and spirit. Are you a soulpreneur-solopreneur? Are you taking aligned action or blind action to further your business? Learn how to stay aligned with your true self. Listen to hear tips on how you can start a practice of grounding yourself by reconnecting with something that you've already done. By giving yourself space and grounding yourself you'll learn how to transform your fear into courage. I love writing thank you notes. They are a fantastic way to express your gratitude to someone for something you appreciate. Many business owners write them to their clients, but have you ever thought about writing a thank you note to yourself? I was recently working with my coach when she suggested working through this exercise to help me express my gratitude for the events that took place over the course of this year. Listen to this episode of Solopreneur Money to hear how I worked through this process and how you can use this activity to help prepare you for the upcoming year. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Have you ever written a thank you note to yourself? [0:42] How I work through this exercise [2:20] Creating your thank you note [4:54] Use your lessons as your guide for next year [6:57] Take some time to pause and reflect on your accomplishments As solopreneurs, we are always moving forward and looking ahead. We rarely take the time to look back to see what we have accomplished. By pausing for a moment to think about the year that has passed, you can take this as an opportunity to think about what you have overcome this year. The first step in this process is to grab two sheets of paper. I like to make the first one a mind map. Think through the year month by month and think about the biggest accomplishment, the biggest mistake, and the biggest challenge you had each month of the year. By working through this activity you'll be able to think about the lessons that you learned from each of these. What have you learned from the past year? Expressing gratitude can help you plan ahead On the second sheet of paper you'll write your thank you note. This can be a letter thanking yourself or thanking the year itself. In my note, I expressed thanks for learning to love travel, for learning that if I keep plodding along I can accomplish anything, and for learning to keep a cool head. After expressing gratitude for what you've learned you'll probably notice some themes that arise that you were thankful for. Now it is time to plan the year ahead based on what you have learned. You can take the lessons that you learned to help you set your goals for the upcoming year. From those goals, create action items that you will do based on what you learned over the year Check out my YouTube channel to see my mind map and thank you note. Barbara Wittmann was a successful entrepreneur in Germany before moving to the US in 2016 to marry the love of her life. In Germany, she was an expert in innovation consulting and was known as a professional in her field. Upon moving to the US, she knew that she would start a new US-based business, but she had to learn how to navigate the unfamiliar rules and business structures that come with moving to a different country. Barbara went from being an entrepreneurial expert to becoming a novice. While it was interesting to learn new ways of doing things, at the same time, learning the ropes was a bit frustrating. She feels that the biggest differences between owning a business in Germany and the US are in banking and healthcare. What does Barbara Wittmann do? Barbara makes IT simple, sage, and strategic by bringing out the best in the leader and the team she is working with. As a trusted CIO advisor she is able to synthesize everything she knows as an entrepreneur, leadership coach, and IT consultant. Since she had her fill in the limelight, Barbara now enjoys working in the background of the companies she assists. Barbara helps her clients establish structures that will help them become innovation leaders within their companies. She also helps her clients make difficult, strategic decisions. Do you have an IT solution overload? Solopreneurs sometimes have an overload of IT solutions. They often buy everything they can to avoid having tech issues. This can lead to a number of subscriptions that they don't really need and these costs can add up over time. As a solopreneur, you don't have money to throw away. So take a step back and consider if you use everything that you are paying for each month. There may be many subscriptions that overlap or you simply don't need Walk your talk You know that IT influences every part of your business because when something goes wrong everything can fall apart. One way to solve IT problems is by becoming a better leader. It is important to be an authentic leader by stepping out of the role of the typical CEO and getting back to your values. You may be aware of the benefits of having a gratitude practice, but have you ever heard of the idea of compulsive gratitude? My guest today is B.T. Harman, a freelance content creator, speaker, and podcaster, who has a fascinating gratitude practice that we can all learn from. B.T. also shares his practice of self-mapping, which is an innovative activity that can help you better understand yourself by defining your strengths and weaknesses. You'll love hearing this intriguing conversation with B.T. on a variety of topics. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... BT's pilgrimage [1:22] What does BT Harman do? [7:58] The hardest thing about striking out on his own [11:24] How he manages time [14:28] How he uses gratitude to reframe his lens [16:37] Learning how BT uses self-mapping to fine-tune his life [22:29] How to spin all the plates [30:34] The money questions [36:08] What does B.T. Harman do? B.T. Harman is a former marketing executive turned creative strategist, podcaster, and speaker. His time in the corporate world was fruitful and full of learning and growth. The bulk of his career was spent at an amazing, values-based organization with a positive company culture. B.T. isn't the typical solopreneur that couldn't wait to get away from his tedious corporate life; he actually had a hard time walking away from his career. Despite all the positive trappings of his traditional job, in 2016, B.T. chose to resign to become a solopreneur who consults on storytelling and brand strategy. Disengaging from the structure of his career in the corporate world allowed him to enjoy the randomness and variety of solopreneur life. B.T. states that this was the best decision he ever made. Compulsive gratitude has rewired B.T.'s brain Mental and emotional health are important to good leadership, and one way to get to a mentally healthy place is through regular gratitude practice. B.T. describes his form of gratitude as compulsive gratitude. He reframes every thought he has through a lens of gratitude. This has helped rewire his brain to find positive outcomes, and, thus, his gratitude practice has increased his happiness. Compulsive gratitude has helped unshackle him from toxic emotions. The way he has achieved this rewiring is by using a comparing down strategy. Everyone knows that comparing yourself to others is a quick way to unhappiness; however, using the compare down strategy has led B.T. to feel a deep sense of thankfulness. He constantly thinks about his life in the context of those who are disadvantaged which helped him create an abundance mindset. How B.T. uses self-mapping to increase his self-awareness B.T. realizes that he is his greatest asset. With this realization, he recognizes how important it is to deeply understand himself. To help him interpret the inner workings of his mind, B.T. uses a strategy that he describes as self-mapping. Essentially, what self-mapping entails is relentless attention to oneself. He takes careful notes on anything he notices about what he enjoys or doesn't and what he is good or bad at. This way he understands his strengths and weaknesses and he can learn how to work around them. B.T. is careful to review the notes he takes regularly to make the most of what he has learned. B.T. and I cover a lot of ground in this engaging conversation. Learn about his recent pilgrimage across northern Spain, how he handles so many tasks, and how he maintains his positive mindset by pressing play. It's not enough to simply generate ideas to improve your business. To ensure that your business grows you must execute those ideas. Today's guest, Kevin Gainey, is here to teach us about effectiveness and execution. You'll learn how to become more intentional so that you can become the person that you want by doing the things you need to do to reach your goals. Listen in to learn how to become more intentional, gain clarity, and be consistent. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... The events that changed Kevin's life [1:22] The actions he took once he got better [6:40] Effectiveness vs. execution [11:17] Tactics to use to improve effectiveness [14:44] The money questions [18:20] How to find Kevin [24:15] A medical event changed his life I meant to have Kevin on an earlier episode of Solopreneur Money, but last spring he had a major health emergency that caused him to reevaluate his life. After experiencing an odd pain in his chest, Kevin decided not to ignore it like he normally would. That decision saved his life. Within hours Kevin was undergoing open-heart surgery and was unconscious for 6 days. His heart problem wasn't a typical heart attack or another lifestyle-based issue; it was completely random. Kevin was lucky that he paid attention to his body at the right time, because of that and the excellent medical staff he is still here today. Kevin isn't squandering his second chance at life Naturally, a health emergency such as the one Kevin had, causes one to reassess their life, but the words of a nurse caused him to dig even deeper. The nurse told him that this second chance to live was given to him for a reason and that he shouldn't waste it. Those words struck home and Kevin has been intentional about his life decisions ever since. Listen in to hear Kevin explain how this health emergency changed his life. Restructuring his business caused Kevin to enjoy a newfound freedom Everything that Kevin does now is done with purpose. He wants to make the most of his second lease on life. This newfound intentionality led him to analyze his commitments, how his business was structured, and how he spends his time. Kevin assessed how to streamline the systems and processes in his business so that he could spend more time in his business rather than on his business. This action gave him a sense of freedom to pursue the work that truly fills him and to spend more quality time with his family doing the things they enjoy. Effectiveness and execution require consistency To become the person you want to be you must do the things that person does. So if you want to become a writer you must write every day. Consistency is key to becoming the person you want to be. This means that you need to execute--to do things you need to do on a daily basis. Just like investing $100 a month every month will get you further than $1,000 sporadically, consistency is key. Consistency defines who you are and who you will become. Kevin is presenting you Solopreneur Money listeners with a special offer to improve your execution and effectiveness by working on mindset and improving tools and systems in your business. After graduating from college, Robin worked in civil engineering. When she wanted a change in scenery she got a master's in nutrition and became a nutrition counselor. While helping her husband with his business over many years, Robin also became a yoga and meditation instructor. This is when she discovered that she loved teaching teenagers and introducing them to spirituality. After she and her husband divorced, Robin recognized that she had to recalibrate her life. Her goal was to figure out how to take her talents and turn them into a business, and that is exactly what she has done with Cosmic Wisdom Coaching. Astrology can help you better understand yourself Robin has always had an interest in astrology and continued to learn more about it and develop her skills throughout her life. Astrology was one way that helped her make sense of the world around her. Robin mentions that astrology isn't as woo-woo as people think; it is actually quite mathematical. Astrology can help you map your potential by giving you the psychological and archetypical language to help you understand yourself. Many people are searching for their highest calling so that they can better understand what they should be doing with their life. Astrology can be used to help answer that question. Not everyone expects to become a solopreneur Becoming a certified coach helped Robin integrate all of her skills so that she could not only support herself but she could help others by using her natural gifts. It had never occurred to her that she could use her gifts to become a solopreneur. Her previous professional roles have always been in the background in support of others. She never had the ambition to be out front, but life changes caused her to reassess her situation. As a solopreneur, she has been able to create her own rules and structure her business the way that makes the most sense to her. Could astrology help you find your purpose in life? Is your life filled with purpose and intentionality? If you are like most people, it's not. My guest today is Alex Bunyan who has spent his working career interviewing and assessing thousands of professionals. That work has taught him that the majority of even the most successful people are floating adrift in their professional lives. Alex became an executive coach to help leaders find clarity and purpose so they can realize their true potential and live an intentional life. You won't want to miss Alex's golden nuggets of wisdom that he dishes out on this episode of Solopreneur Money. Grab your AirPods and be prepared to dig deep when you press play. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Alex's story [2:12] How Alex lost his way and found it again [22:41] The biggest challenge in building Alex's business [30:37] The role that purpose plays in your life [36:45] The role that intentionality plays in your life [46:45] The money questions [51:07] Alex Bunyan bet on himself to pursue a life of purpose Alex Bunyan grew up as the son of an RCMP officer in Canada. His upbringing was similar to the typical Army Brat lifestyle--moving every 2 years, always being the new kid, and constantly the outsider. While It may not have been easy to grow up in small, rural communities as the son of the local cop, Alex's childhood taught him how to adjust to new situations and how to read people. Alex always thought he would become a high school English teacher, but a leadership opportunity in retail came along first and provided him with great money, plenty of freedom, and a wealth of learning opportunities. When Alex was let go in a restructuring event at the bank he worked at, he chose to take the opportunity to gain clarity and find his purpose. When he looked deep into himself he realized that becoming a leadership and career coach was the best way for him to live an intentional life. Are you sure you are following your passion? Many solopreneurs have heard the advice “follow your passion,” but this advice is often misunderstood and poorly executed. This is because people fail to dig in and explore what their true purpose is. As a coach, Alex helps others explore this question and tease out their own answers. It is important not to confuse your job title with your passion. Your passion is about more than what you do for a living. Passions live beneath the functions of your work. Have you explored what motivates and inspires you? Are you living a purpose-filled life? The next step is to get intentional After you discover your true purpose it is important to take deliberate steps to live a purpose-filled life. This is where intentionality comes in. Intentionality is the follow-through that comes after finding your true purpose. Acting on the steps you need to take to structure your life around your purpose is being intentional. Have you thought about whether your life and business are in line with your purpose? Do you live an intentional life? Do you feel like your business isn't as successful as it could be? Are you treating your business more like a side hustle or as a legitimate business? On this episode of Solopreneur Money, you'll learn why it is so important to get legit so that you can succeed in your business. Gordon Firemark helps business owners set themselves up for success by making sure they have all their ducks in a row. As an entertainment lawyer, he understands exactly what it takes to create a successful business since he has seen so many businesses thrive and fail. Today he shares what he has learned from his work with business owners, and he will teach you how to do the things that professionals do to achieve the results that professionals achieve. Press play to learn how to get legit and go pro. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... How Gordan became the podcast lawyer [2:02] What he works on now [11:03] How to get legit and go pro [13:08] The money questions [19:10] How Gordan became the podcast lawyer Gordon became interested in the entertainment industry early in life. As a child, he frequently went to the theater with his family and even majored in theater in college. He wanted to go into the film industry, but his interests shifted after a teacher mentioned that he would make a great entertainment lawyer. After college, he applied to a grad school program and to law school. The future became clear when he only got accepted to law school. Although Gordon never envisioned himself as a lawyer, he has found his niche in the entertainment industry working with theater, film, and podcasts. How to become legit and go pro In Gordon's years of experience as an entertainment lawyer, he has seen business owners succeed and fail. This has provided him with a unique perspective to be able to analyze what it takes to succeed in business. Gordon noticed that the business owners who had a professional mindset from the beginning were more apt to succeed in their business. Rather than waiting for a certain milestone to legitimize their business, they did so from the get-go. His advice to solopreneurs is to think legit, plan legit, and behave legit. Have a plan Once you get into a professional mindset then you can develop your plan for success. It is much easier to follow a plan than it is to figure everything out as it comes to you. Advance planning will help you to anticipate roadblocks and hurdles that come at you so that you can prepare your response ahead of time. When you work without a plan then you spend much of your time putting out fires. Think about how you can sketch out your plan for your systems and strategies, how you will make your money, and how you can structure a team of professionals so that your business can thrive. Create the right mindset Success comes from creating the right mindset. Your business won't be able to prosper until you change your mindset to one of success. Create the right attitude, vision, and execution to take your business to the next level. When you think that you are a legitimate business owner you'll be able to plan like a legitimate business owner and behave like a legitimate business owner. Tatiana Tsoir, CPA and founder of Linza Advisors is here to explain how you can save money on your taxes with just a bit of 4th quarter tax planning. She'll also walk through the highlights of her book, Dream Bold, Start Smart, which is written for solopreneurs like you. The tips that Tatiana shares in this episode are pure gold. Don't let another year go by without some advanced tax planning. Listen in to hear Tatiana Tsoir explain how you can save money on taxes and start your business off right. She realized that her facility with numbers and the experience she had as a bookkeeper would make her a great accountant. Today, Tatiana is not only a CPA and founder of Linza Advisors, she is also an author. After helping many solopreneurs clean up the mess they made of their accounting at the start of their businesses, Tatiana realized that she could share her experience and help entrepreneurs by writing a book. Her book provides a framework that budding solopreneurs need to start and sustain a profitable business in a responsible way. Don't fake it until you make it So many solopreneurs start their businesses on hope and little else, but this is a recipe for disaster. The fake it til you make it attitude will only get you into bankruptcy. Tatiana advises becoming a cash flow master. You need to have an understanding of how much you bring into your business and how much flows out of your business accounts each month. Know your numbers so that you can ensure that you always have enough to pay your bills. Don't wait until the year ends to do your tax planning Most solopreneurs wait until the year is over to do any tax preparation, but this doesn't do anything to help you prepare for the tax bill to come. By bringing your profit and losses up to date you won't be shocked come April. Once you reach the end of the year there's not much you can do to save on taxes. You can contribute to your HSA and retirement savings, but the real tax-saving strategies must be taken during the course of the year. 4th quarter tax-saving strategies for solopreneurs Before the end of the year, there are several strategies that you can implement to save on taxes. One little-known strategy is called income shifting. This strategy can allow you to shift income to other members of your household to lessen the income tax that you owe. This is not a strategy to try on your own; make sure to have a professional help you. Before the end of the year, you can change from an LLC to an S corporation to ensure that you are taking advantage of the tax savings that an S-corp can provide. Listen in to hear more tax-saving strategies and to learn how Tatiana's book could help you and your small business. Tatiana provides us with helpful nuggets that can help you with not only your tax preparation but also in planning your business expenses as well. Do you include everything you need to in your contracts with your clients? As solopreneurs, we can often get wrapped up in everything else that our business entails and forget how important it is to have a solid contract in place. A contract not only protects you and your client but it can also make a powerful first impression. On this episode of Solopreneur Money, William Warren joins me to discuss the importance of creating contracts. You'll learn why it is important to have a contract in place as well as what you should include in your contracts. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... How William Warren became a solopreneur [2:32] The biggest challenges William suffered as a solopreneur [7:49] What William did to grow his business [10:38] The 3 purposes of a contract [14:50] 8 things you need to learn to write a contract [18:49] The money questions [34:00] William learned that starting a business wasn't as scary as he thought William Warren is the founder and CEO of The Sketch Effect, a creative services company that delivers animated and illustrated communication products to a wide range of clients. When William struck out on his own to build his business he had no experience or training in the business world. He had to figure out the businessy stuff all on his own. Once he got over the initial fear of starting his own business he realized that becoming an entrepreneur wasn't as hard as he thought it would be and doing what he loves for a living is fun. 3 reasons to use a contract Contracts are one of the areas of business that many creatives shy away from. They may think that they don't need one or that they are too hard to create, so before we discuss how to write a contract let's first understand why we need one. The first reason to create a contract is the most obvious. A contract defines the scope of the work and the price. The client learns what they are getting and how much it costs. The next reason to use a contract is to set protections or limits. By establishing your limits you will prevent scope creep so that clients won't continue to ask you to do 'just' one more thing. A contract also helps you to seal the deal with your client. A well-made contract will turn a potential client into a client. 8 important things to include in your contract Be abundantly clear about the scope of work. Describe what the client is getting, but also make it clear what they are not getting. Make sure to recap the deliverables in plain English. Explain your process. What steps will you take to deliver the product? Establish your process upfront to set expectations. Define when the client will receive the service. This not only gives limitations but it establishes clear boundaries around the time spent on your service. Define the clients' rights, usage, and exclusivity. State how the client can use the product or service and when they can and can't use it. Be clear on how much the client will pay and be sure to charge according to your value. Explain how they will pay you. Establish when they will pay you Create a space to sign and date the contract. It is also important to make your contract look polished so that the client understands that they are working with a professional. A clear, well-made contract will entice future clients to sign and bring in more business. William Warren shares so much value in this interview. You won't want to miss all that he has to say. Make sure to listen in to learn from his experience. If you found this episode helpful make sure to share this podcast with other solopreneurs to keep it growing. I don't know about you guys, but I'm still confused about this whole marketing thing. Have you been trying to make content marketing work for your business? Mark Henderson joins me on this episode of Solopreneur Money to teach us how to take the confusion out of content marketing and make this valuable form of marketing work for our businesses. Mark is the founder of Clixable, a content agency that can help you clarify your message, share your story, and grow your business. Are you ready to learn how to tell your story in an organic way without solely relying on paid media? Press play now to discover how to up your marketing game. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Mark's journey to content marketing [2:22] Learning how Clixable was born [8:32] Pulling your story out to tell it to the world [11:48] The challenges that Mark has faced starting his business [13:24] How Clixable helps its clients [17:55] Tips to improve your organic marketing efforts [25:12] How often to post on social media [30:35] The money questions [32:15] Mark's journey to creating Clixable After working for more than 20 years in corporations, mid-sized agencies, and startups, Mark Henderson noticed that solopreneurs have a hard time telling their stories to their audience. He saw these small business owners spending thousands of dollars on web advertising campaigns and he knew that there was a better way to improve these companies' marketing campaigns. Mark's passion for helping businesses grow, thrive and make an impact on the world is what drove him to strike out on his own and start Clixable. Mark helps small business owners define who they are and what makes them unique in their space. Once they have defined their place in the world, then Mark helps his clients create strategies and tactics to tell their stories in compelling ways. How to make content marketing work for any business It is important to understand that content marketing is a long-term brand investment. You should expect a minimum of one year and an average of 3-5 years to see a return on your investment. The idea of content marketing is to create rich content to help drive traffic to your website. Weekly blog posts can be turned into white papers or you can pull out nuggets of information to use on social media to drive traffic back to your website. Tips to improve your organic marketing efforts If you are interested in getting the most out of your organic marketing efforts it's important to be authentic. You shouldn't look at your posts as a form of advertising; if you do, your audience will see right through you and scroll right past your posts. Don't be afraid to be vulnerable. People appreciate that. You don't have to create the most polished piece of writing or content. Part of creating that authenticity is keeping it real. Don't try to sell your product right away. Rather than trying to sell to your audience try to help them instead. By providing potential clients with value you will build their trust so that they will come to you when they are ready to buy. The point of content marketing is to build trust and build your brand by educating and informing your potential clients. Mark dishes out so much helpful information on content marketing. If this area has been a mystery to you then you won't want to miss this episode of our marketing series. Small business owners spend so much money on marketing their businesses, but the most powerful way to grow a business is through referrals. John Barron has a powerful plan to help you develop referrals which is why I have invited him back onto the Solopreneur Money podcast. If you listened to episode 50 you heard John talk about the sales continuum and you learned how to implement an effective process that turns leads into paying clients. Today John is here to teach you how to grow your business through the referral engine. The referral engine is an ingenious plan that utilizes the way we naturally refer people to businesses. You know the best clients come from referrals, so make sure to press play to hear how to increase your customer base by creating a referral system. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... When to ask for a referral [2:32] 3 reasons someone wouldn't refer people to you [5:28] Referral engine success stories [13:39] The money questions [17:01] When should you ask for a referral? Business owners often wonder when the best time to ask a customer for a referral is. The answer is never. You might be shaking your head in surprise. Never? Well then, how are you supposed to get new clients? Just because you shouldn't directly ask for referrals doesn't mean you shouldn't go out of your way to encourage people to recommend your business; it means you should understand the referral relationship. Why we shouldn't ask clients for referrals If asking clients for a referral feels weird and uncomfortable that's because it is weird and uncomfortable! And it's weird and uncomfortable because of the nature of referrals. You don't want to put yourself or someone else through the awkwardness of directly asking for a referral. That doesn't mean that people don't enjoy referring their friends and family members to fabulous companies; everyone loves to recommend a fantastic company to a friend. However, it is important to understand that people don't recommend businesses to their friends to help the business; they do it to help their friends. To understand how the referral engine works it is important to understand why someone wouldn't refer potential clients to a business. 3 reasons someone wouldn't refer potential clients to your business People often don't recognize an opportunity for you. They don't know your target market. People don't know how to talk about you; they may not know why you are so great at what you do. They don't know all the services that you provide. There is a risk that comes with referring someone to a business. The referrer puts their reputation on the line. How to get these obstacles out of the way The first two obstacles to overcome are educational. You can overcome these by simply educating your network about what you do and who you serve. One way to do that is by writing a letter--not an email, a physical letter. Listen in to hear what you should include in this letter. You'll be blown away by how simple this plan is. It is easy to implement and effective. Every person you meet is either a potential client or a potential referral. Learn how to utilize your network to get your referral engine started. Does the thought of creating content for your business give you a headache? Many of us can't stand the thought of sitting down and producing content even though we know it will help our business grow. That's why I've invited Kris Hughes, a content strategist for solopreneurs, onto the Solopreneur Money show today. Kris helps small business owners lower their customer acquisition costs, tell their brand story, and win back their content strategy. He's here to teach us how to tackle content strategy, overcome roadblocks, and gain traction to ensure that all that hard work will pay off in the end. Press play now so that you don't miss out on another day of content marketing. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Kris's story [3:22] What caused his transition [6:45] Biggest lessons learned from building his business [9:40] Mastering your content strategy in 30 min a day [11:22] The biggest roadblocks [15:25] What is Clubhouse [16:33] What does it take to get traction [20:53] Finding your voice [25:52] The money questions [29:01] Landing that first client is the hardest part of starting a business After years of writing and working for others, 15 months ago Kris Hughes decided to strike out on his own and create a business helping solopreneurs learn from his expertise as a content creator. Kris believes that the hardest part about starting his company was landing that first client. Kris isn't a natural salesman, so direct selling and outreach were tricky for him to get used to. He prefers creating organic content and expanding his network naturally which is why he teaches content marketing to other solopreneurs. What Kris has learned from building his business There is a learning curve that comes with building a business and Kris has discovered a few takeaways after his first year out on his own. The first one is to make sure that to have a foundational client to provide a baseline income and gain traction as the business grows. Another lesson Kris has learned is how to say no. Solopreneurs have a tendency to say yes to every client that comes along as they build their business, but not every client is a good fit. His advice is: if you recognize that someone may not be your ideal client, then just say no. He thinks it's important to think about the return on investment of your time. Ask yourself if this client is really worth your time. Overcoming the obstacles to creating content Kris works with all kinds of clients and what he has seen is that most solopreneurs wear many hats. Solopreneurs are the CEO, CTO, CFO, COO and so much more in their company. Most of the time they feel like there's just no way they can create effective content on top of everything else that they do. He has a few solutions to this problem. The first is to delegate. Rather than creating content on your own, you could hire someone else to do it. There are many spaces where you can find freelance writers to help create fantastic content so that you can concentrate on running your business. Contracting a freelance writer can help you publish consistent content and create a voice for your business. Listen in to hear where the best places and worst places to find freelance writers are. Another way is to dedicate 30 minutes per day to create the content that would best serve your business. Choosing the type of content depends on your business, your niche, and your personality. Once you find out what kind of content you want to create then keep at it. Content creation will not show results overnight. Just like your money, content creation creates compounding returns over time. Kris provides us with so much information in this episode. You won't want to miss his tips on how to get started, how you can delegate, and how you can find your company's voice. A few months ago, I had the opportunity to make a guest appearance on the leadership series of my friend Tim Croll's B2B Made Simple podcast. In that episode, we discussed 10 ways in which numbers can provide clarity to you and your business. You've heard Tim Croll on the Solopreneur Money podcast before on episode 28. Today we're going to flip this solopreneur podcast around. In this episode, you'll hear Tim interviewing me. Listen to this episode to learn 10 financial tips to improve your business and you'll hear Tim ask me about leadership and money. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... A bit of my backstory [1:22] 10 financial tips to improve your business [9:38] Improving your financial outlook if you are struggling in your business [19:44] Not letting your ego get in the way of success [29:29] Taking time to think [34:39] 10 financial tips to improve your business Start with vision. Before you even begin looking at your numbers you have to have a vision. You need to have the vision to understand where you are going with your business. Once you have determined your vision, this will help you define where your money is going. Stop commingling your business and personal expenses. You need to have separate accounts for business and personal expenses. Run an annual budget. We all hate to budget, but it is important to understand the flow of your money. Look back over the past 24 months and look for trends. Having a budget in place will give you clarity and focus. Understand your revenues. What were your revenues over the past 2 years? Were there spikes and dips? Once again, look for trends. Pay your quarterly tax estimates. Creating a separate tax account will reduce the stress of paying taxes. Save for retirement. Not only will this help you prepare for the future, but saving for retirement provides you and your employees with tax-saving opportunities. Remember, hope is not a retirement plan. Build an emergency savings fund for your small business. Do you have 6-12 months' worth of savings? This takes us back to step 3; knowing your numbers will help you get started. Having 6-12 months of expenses in an emergency fund will reduce stress. Automate your expenses. If you have your expenses automatically deducted when possible this will reduce the busy work that comes with paying bills. Seek advice. Financial advice from a CPA or financial advisor is invaluable to solopreneurs. They can help you avoid financial pitfalls that you may not see. Revisit your numbers quarterly. Scheduling time to check in with your budget on a quarterly basis will allow you to gain an understanding of where you are and where you need to be. How to improve your financial outlook if your business is struggling These tips are great for anyone starting out or already succeeding in their business, but how can solopreneurs who are struggling to make ends meet do all of these things on top of running their business? If you are having trouble staying afloat, there are 4 things that you can do. The most important thing to start with is by saving money. Even if it is only $50 per week or month, any little bit will help. As a business owner, life can throw you into perpetual chaos. Having a bit of savings behind you can ease your worries. The next thing you'll want to do is to begin to tackle your debt. Try taking advantage of the historically low-interest rates to refinance debt. Before you get to the last step you'll want to know your costs. What does it cost you to do your work? What is your cost per unit? This may come as a surprise, but the last step is to raise your fees. This is the quickest way to raise your revenues. Study your market to see if you can increase your rates. This is why it is so important to know your numbers. Once you understand your cost per unit or cost per client then you can follow the ⅓ rule. Tune in to find out what that rule is and how it can help you improve your business. Welcome back to the financial planning basics series. This is a series that I have created within the Solopreneur Money podcast to help you master the basics of finance so that you can live the life of your dreams. If you have reached a certain level of financial success, you may have been asked this question: can you cosign a loan for a family or friend? Would you know what to do if this question comes up? Press play if you are interested in hearing my client's story and learning what questions to ask if someone you care about asks for your financial help. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Statistics on small business success [3:02] Alternatives to cosigning to help a friend get started [5:23] Questions to ask [7:36] Should you cosign on a friend's business loan? You know how hard it is to start a successful business because you've already put in the work and done it. Now that you have achieved a level of success, those around you want some of what you have. Many of us have been approached by friends and family asking for help to start their own business. Even though you know how hard you have to work to make your business a success, it may help you to consider some statistics before you help someone else get started. 20% of new businesses don't make it past the first year. 30% don't make it past the second and 50% won't make it 5 years down the road. 70% of all small businesses don't last for more than 10 years. The numbers don't lie. Cosigning on a business loan is a bad idea. What are some alternatives that you can use to help? If you have realized that cosigning on a friend's business loan is a bad idea but you still want to help, there are ways to help them get started on their business without putting your name on the line. You could loan them the money outright by using cash that you have on hand. You can lend them money by using the home equity that you have. Or you could help them come up with other ways to get the money they need. I still don't recommend any of these alternatives, but they are slightly better than cosigning on a business loan. Questions to ask If you are still considering cosigning for their business loan, you need to go into it with your eyes wide open. You can do this by asking plenty of questions. How much will you be on the line for? What would happen if you get stuck with the loan? Do you really want this business if you end up getting stuck with it? Would you want collateral from this person? Before you sign any papers, make sure that you consult with an attorney. Initially, they came to me with more debt than assets. They were sick of working too much and having nothing to show for it. So I helped them create a plan to pay off their debt, create an emergency fund, and build up their assets. What came next after achieving their objectives? Every year I met with Lloyd and Elaine to revisit their plan and make sure they were on track. It took them 4 years to achieve their goals and once they did they wondered what they should do next. After ensuring that they were financially secure, they turned their focus to preparing for retirement. We planned this by creating a simple IRA and a Roth IRA for both of them. Then we set up a process so that they could set a pace to retire when they wanted. They sold their business, now what? When Lloyd called me this year to tell me he sold his business I was thrilled for them. He wanted to know what he should do next. We discussed the sale structure so that we could best figure out how to reduce their taxes and ensure the proceeds would further their goals. Listen in to learn how Lloyd and Elaine were able to keep their S-Corp open for the year to utilize tax savings strategies and max out their IRAs. You'll also learn what you could do with the rest of the proceeds from the sale of your own business. Keep in touch! Did you enjoy this story? Let me know! Do you have a plan for your kids and your belongings in the event of your death? Do you know who will make decisions for you if you become incapacitated? Do you have a last will and testament in place? I ask these questions of all of my new clients. However, most people aren't prepared for an unforeseen event that could incapacitate them or cause their death. Why? Because most people don't like to think about their own mortality. 5 considerations when you draw up your will You know you need to have a will in place, but do you know all the pieces you should consider when drawing one up? You can create your own last will and testament by using an online template, but I think it is worth the $500-$1000 you will spend to have an attorney get it done right. Consider each of these 5 areas so that when you draw up your will it will go quickly and smoothly. Kids - It is important to discuss this with your spouse. You will want to decide together who will raise your kids if you both pass. Make sure to consider if the person you choose is up for the task. You'll also want to think about whether the kids would have to move to a different city and if you would need to provide additional funds to help with the transition. Money - You may want to draw up a trust for your heirs. There are 2 types of trusts. An inter vivos trust is a living trust and can be established during your lifetime. A testamentary trust is a trust that will be established upon the event of your death. Power of attorney - Who will handle your affairs if you become incapacitated. It is important to remember that there are 2 types of power of attorney. An attorney in fact is created for the present and will go into effect as soon as the document is signed. A springing durable power of attorney goes into effect only in the event that you are deemed incapacitated by a doctor. Healthcare power of attorney - I call these the pull the plug orders. You should also consider whether you would like to be an organ donor. Discuss your wishes with your spouse and get them down on paper. Beneficiaries - Check the primary and secondary beneficiaries on your accounts periodically. Are they up to date? Make sure your current wishes are stated on all of your retirement accounts. You probably have investments but do you really know what they are? How well versed are you in the basics of investing? As a solopreneur, you must rely on yourself to create a paycheck, and you should also understand the basics of investing to ensure that your money is working to help you achieve your goals. On this episode of Solopreneur Money, you’ll learn about stocks, bonds, and mutual funds by way of cookie jars, high school students, and auto purchases. These analogies may sound a bit strange, but after listening to this solopreneur podcast you’ll have a better understanding of what these investment vehicles are. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Learning exactly what you are investing in [2:42] How high school students are like mutual funds [4:24] Discovering how bonds are like financing a car [7:40] How a mutual fund is like a cookie jar Did you ever have a cookie jar in your kitchen when you were a kid? When I was growing up our cookie jar had all kinds of different cookies. You never knew what you were going to get. When you own a mutual fund you own pieces of different companies--different stocks. So I like to compare mutual funds to cookie jars. Like my childhood cookie jar, a mutual fund contains many types of goodies inside. Do you know what’s in your cookie jar? How stocks are like high school students Stocks are classified in several ways. It can be confusing to understand the various ways that stocks are classified but comparing them with high school students can help. Just like high schools have freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, stocks are also separated into different categories. Small-cap stocks can be compared to freshmen. They aren’t established yet and can be volatile. Their success or failure is yet to be determined. Mid-cap stocks are like sophomores--they are no longer as volatile as freshmen. Mid-caps are a bit more mature and less risky than small-cap stocks. Large-cap stocks are similar to juniors in high school. They are on the path to seniority. Just like seniors, mega-cap stocks are well established and looking ahead toward the future. Did your high school have foreign exchange students? Those foreign exchange students can represent international stocks. Bonds are like car loans Now that you know what stocks are let's move on to bonds. Bonds are debt issued by a company and are essentially a loan that you are giving that corporation. The last time you bought a car you probably financed it. If you have good credit you got a low-interest rate but if your credit isn’t the best then, chances are, you had to settle for a high-interest rate. The same is true for bonds. Bonds with low-interest rates have good credit and they can pay back their loan over a short period of time. If the company has poor credit the bonds they issue are called junk bonds and these have a high-interest rate. Learn to master your finances It's time to take stock of what's in your cookie jar. Take a look at your investments to see where you stand. Do you have same-aged students or same-aged loans? It is important to have a varied portfolio. You'll learn more about diversification in future episodes, so be sure to subscribe so that you can have the latest Solopreneur Money in your inbox.
