Birth doula and student-midwife Trinity Stephens is serving the Southwestern Ohio birthing community at an early age. She's 17 years old but has been a birth worker for four years. She completed her initial training with her Aunt Rhonda and has continued to build her skills and garner further education through training and hands-on work with local midwives. After attending her first birth, virtually, she couldn't serve in the hospital due to her age. Trinity reached out to local midwives to see if she could shadow them. Her parents were supportive and encouraged her to learn a trade; this work aligned with what they had instilled in her. They fully invested in the desires of her heart. As a homeschooler, her schedule allows for freedom of choice and how she spends her time. Trinity was also able to attend college classes and started her research on Black Maternal and Infant Health and solutions to better outcomes and positive experiences. Her research led her to think beyond doula work and explore the obstetrician/gynecologist route. She knows that Black women need to feel safe in their pregnancy journey, and Trinity wants to be a haven. Eventually, she connected with a midwife willing to meet with her, and she has been attending births with her ever since. Trinity fell in love with home birth and has shifted her plans to become a midwife. Seeing safe, natural births have helped her see the possibilities for birthing people to birth without fear and unnecessary interventions. Trinity understands that midwives need to prepare for challenges during birth, and this has also helped her be patient with the midwifery process. She has attended over 100 births and counting. Each birth helps her become more confident about the work ahead. None of the births she has attended count towards her midwifery journey because she hasn't graduated from high school yet. She's not rushing the process and loves learning.Exploring her family tree regarding birth work has created some interest in her lineage and how it is a birthright. She has three practicing doulas in her family; her cousin, BSiCs own, Danielle Jackson, her Aunt Rhonda, and her Great Aunt Joyce. She encourages more people to answer the call because our people need us. Stepping into the work humble and ready to receive correction. We have an ask - if you feel led to support Trinity with her Midwifery journey, please listen to her birth story, and donate to her Cashapp: Bennies Babies The Doula Service.
One of the twin babies kidnapped in a car stolen from Columbus has died; Southwestern Ohio man sentenced for August 2020 police chase and shootout; Householder trial expected to resume tomorrow; Bengals fall to KC in their bid for a Super Bowl return.

Food insecurity advocacy with Heather Campbell From a civilian standpoint, one may assume that military families are "taken care of." 140: "When military spouses come together as a group, they become powerful." The League of Wives with Heath Lee When was the last time you saw a monument to military spouses? Based on Heath Lee's research, there are none. As an advocate for women's history, Heath tells the true story of the military spouses who formed the League of Wives, the national POW/MIA organization, and the National League of Families for American Prisoners and Missing in Southeast Asia. Wow, it's our 300th episode! Who knew we would get this far before anyone demanded we cease and desist immediately? Orlando City went to Cincinnati a bit shorthanded, became even more shorthanded during warmups, and didn't accomplish much over 90 minutes in a 1-0 away loss to FC Cincinnati. Pedro Gallese played well, Antonio Carlos looked pretty good on his return, and outside of that there weren't a lot of players of whom to sing praises. We break down a meh game in Southwestern Ohio and make our Man of the Math selections (it was unanimous, naturally). The Pride were off this week but there was some news and a little more discussion of how this season has gone and what needs to happen to start any meaningful change. We also discussed the Young Lions of OCB, who got a big away win at Cincinnati, as well as the USWNT's first friendly against Colombia in this international window. That led to some more Pride talk and how talent has not been the teams problem in the past, but it sure isn't a strength of the club at the moment. This week's mailbag asked us about chain restaurants not in our area, MLS expansion cities, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and more. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. One of our listeners left the most amazing PawedCast-related stories we've ever heard in her review on Apple Podcasts. That was a bright spot in our week, for sure. Finally, we gave our key match-ups and predictions for Orlando City's home matches within the next week against Nashville SC and D.C. United. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 300 went down: 0:15 - A loss in Cincinnati is not what we had in mind for Orlando City this week. 19:42 - A pause for some Pride talk, a good weekend for OCB, and the USWNT is back on the pitch. 35:27 - Our mailbag and our predictions for Nashville SC in the U.S. Open Cup and D.C. United on the Fourth of July. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Today's female veteran with Cat Corchado It's been 22 years since Cat Corchado transitioned out of the military as an Air Force veteran that served for 20 years. Although she has enjoyed most of her civilian life as a personal trainer, it's only been in the recent years where she's asked herself, "What's next?" It was during the heart of the pandemic when she realized it was time to start the Sisters in Service podcast. When you think of college students you might think of affluent young people reveling in the joys of care-free campus life…But, that doesn’t describe all college students – especially many non-traditional students. They often are juggling families, jobs, mounting debt and hunger. Yes, hunger. Many go to regional campuses or community colleges. They are enduring current hardships for the promise of a better life with a degree. Bob Long was a long-time voice on WMUB radio at Miami University in Southwestern Ohio. He spent almost 30 years working with students and gaining broadcasting and journalism awards. Late in his career and since his retirement, Long started working with students at one of Miami University’s regional campuses. This is a campus inhabited by working students and those with limited resources in an impoverished area of the state. “I was amazed at the conditions in which I found some of these students,” Long says. “Many of them had gone days without eating so that they could pay for school, books, and to support their families.” Most of them are in debt for their education and the student debt is mounting each day. In addition, they need to spend money on books and transportation to and from the campus. “All of this, too often, totals up to poverty. These students are financially strapped and they are NOT the spoiled college students we normally think of…far from it…” Long describes. “They need some help.” Long, a long-time advocate for food pantries for the poor, wants to attack the hunger issues facing many non-traditional students at satellite campuses. He is starting college and university based food pantries for qualifying college students and he is trying to launch a national campaign to meet the needs of these low-income students. He also is using his voice to argue for the lowering of student debt or the forgiveness of debt payments for qualifying students. Long wants to give everyone a chance to get an education but he says it is not possible for many who already live on the economic fringes.
My grandmother, who’s now ninety-eight, lived most of her life in a little town in Southwestern Ohio called Waynesville. The town has reinvented itself in the last few years as a destination for antiquers wiling to pay top-dollar for what she might call junk, but when she was there the town was the small center of a lot of small family farms, including her own. In her years there, she helped run the farm, started a dry-cleaning business, drove the school bus, served as an EMT and worked in the sheriff’s office. She was one of the folks everyone knew. On Sundays, she cooked biscuits for the prisoners in the local penitentiary. For me, growing up, she was just grandma. I didn’t realize the richness of her character until years later, with age and distance, maybe even a little wisdom. In her latest poetry collection, Amy Wright takes this kind of realization and transforms it into powerful, moving, and often times hilarious art. She was raised in the Appalachian region of Southwest Virginia, and her poems, which she calls Cracker Sonnets (BrickRoad Poetry Press, 2016), bring this region and its characters to life. Jax Ovie, Virginia Leabus, Coralee Robins, Leda Burke, Belle Neely, and Edna Culpepper, these are just a few of the folks whose daily grinds and deep affections fill Wright’s poems. And as you can tell from these names alone, Wright portrays her people with what you’d hope from a poet: lyric delight. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Tina Harter was born and raised near Cincinnati, Ohio. Throughout her childhood, she would often spend her summer months on her Grandparent’s farm in the hills of Northern Tennessee where she developed an appreciation for nature, animals and the outdoors. Through the years, her interests have expanded into various areas of science, crypto zoology and even paranormal. However, 30 years after that summer evening in her friends’ backyard, that memory and experience came back to her and bigfoot has become her main passion ever since. Over the last 10 years, Tina has increased her studies by researching many books and articles on the subject. She has been involved in a few groups around the Tri-state area, is a member of a weekly skype discussion group, attended several conferences and has joined various blogs and focus groups within the Bigfoot community. She is the administrator and one of the creators of the internet group Bigfoot Under The Radar and is out in the field at least 2 times a week to learn as much as possible about the Bigfoot phenomena. She has combined her passion with trying to understand Bigfoot with her passion for photography and has researched Southwestern Ohio quite heavily. She has some particularly favorite spots where she has acquired physical evidence of footprints as well as thousands of pictures of stick structures and other signs. She has had other sightings as well, but so far it has eluded the lens of her camera. Tina believes that her strong determination to research Bigfoot is to hopefully get some answers about her experience as a teen.

A standup comedian for more than twenty-five years, Drew Hastings has inhabited the American comedy scene with a distinct perspective. His commanding stage presence has always delivered intelligent material with an edge, be it his observations of the human condition or the declining state of American society. What has always made Hastings' standup and storytelling unique though is his ability to incorporate his wildly varied careers into his act , whether it's a disastrous foray into a records shredding business, diving into farming at the age of fifty—truly farmageddon—or his unlikely time as a small city mayor.Drew's comedy specials, late-night tv appearances, and his status as an all-time favorite on the nationally syndicated Bob & Tom radio show have given him a wide following, particularly in the Midwest. He is one of the few people ever to appear on The Tonight show two separate times for two different careers.Born in Casablanca, Morocco to a British mother and American father, Drew has spent most of his life in Southwestern Ohio except for a twelve year stretch in Hollywood. In 2004, he fled California saying, At the end of the day the sun doesn't set in L.A.—it just gives up and drops into the ocean with a bitter hiss. Drew settled in Hillsboro, Ohio to try his hand as a cattle producer in between a busy comedy tour schedule. His farming misadventures went into his standup and Drew gained an entirely new audience, the agricultural community, further expanding his popularity in the Midwest. In 2011, Hastings ran for mayor of Hillsboro on a populist campaign. “I think this Country is going to Hell in a hand basket. I can't do anything about the whole U.S. but I can do something about the one place I live.” Outspoken and blunt, he won in a landslide and got to work turning around the city's financial woes and make critical infrastructure improvements. Incensed when Hastings won a second term in 2016, he was targeted by a small faction of elected officials in what most observers called a political witch hunt. Drew was indicted on four felonies, the most serious charge being the dumping of his trash into a city dumpster. He was found not guilty, acquitted of all charges and served out his second term.About “Chasing Drew Hastings”:When Drew Hastings was seven years old, his father, also named Drew Hastings, left the family, remarried, and had another son, named Drew Hastings. “Suddenly there were three Drew Hastings,” Hastings writes, “me, the one who left me, and the one who replaced me.” And so begins a life-long pursuit of a name, and one long, slow skid toward the realization that we're all just making it up as we go along. The son of a single mother, Hastings picks his way through suburban and urban Ohio, obsessed with proving himself against the backdrop of the counterculture of the Sixties and Seventies. He opens a paper shredding business, tries his hand as a rug salesman, even dabbles in muskrat trapping. Most enterprises end in disaster and nothing lasts long. Finally someone suggests standup comedy—friends always said he was funny, plus the idea of ‘Drew Hastings' on marquees all over the country is too much to pass up. He moves to Hollywood where he flirts with fame but can't quite bring himself to grovel long enough. And just as a dark depression takes hold, he finally bolts, buys a farm in rural Appalachian Ohio, and at the age of fifty, starts over, breeding cattle, developing real estate, and yes, becoming the mayor of Hillsboro, Ohio.Refreshingly honest and darkly funny, Chasing Drew Hastings is a wide-ranging memoir of a life ruled by misadventure and coincidence, growing up a confused kid and striving to find out what it means to be a man. Drawing on everything from small town politics to the ambition and malaise of show biz, Drew Hastings reckons with American masculinity, fatherhood, and inheritance head on. Unlikely, irreverent, and wholly original, the result is endlessly entertaining, and perhaps even inadvertently revelatory.Check out Drew's website here:https://www.drewhastings.com/Get “Chasing Drew Hastings” here;https://www.amazon.com/Chasing-Drew-Hastings-memoir/dp/1735806625/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3HET857NRN5Z9&keywords=drew+hastings&qid=1641078941&sprefix=drew+hastings%2Caps%2C894&sr=8-1If you'd like to support the show and get some cool perks, check out our Patreon page:https://www.patreon.com/btbpcLook for new stuff for Patrons soon!Head over to the Behind the Bits website for extra content:https://www.thebtbpc.com/Get on our mailing list for news about future guests and more great content:https://www.thebtbpc.com/p/mailing-list/Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
