The Power of Negotiation in the World of Professional Sports ft. Leigh Steinberg Episode Description: “How negotiation is more than just the bottom line.” In today's episode of the ‘I Own It' Podcast by Ben Reinberg, I am joined by Leigh Steinberg, a renowned American sports agent, his industry's top philanthropist, best-selling author, and the Chairman of the Board for Steinberg Sports & Entertainment. Leigh has represented over 300 professional athletes in sports such as football, baseball, basketball, and boxing. He has the record of representing the no.1 overall pick in the NFL draft eight times. Also, he's considered to be the real-life inspiration for his true-to-life story in the film ‘Jerry Maguire' with Tom Cruise and directed by Cameron Crowe. As a philanthropist and top sports agent, Leigh highlights the value of negotiation by sharing his personal stories of the rise, fall, and redemption of his game-changing career in the high-stakes world of professional sports. So join Ben and Leigh to find out the secret formula of success and why he's not on TikTok! Timestamps: 0:22 - Guest intro 2:03 - Understanding the context of ‘negotiation' 5:28 - How to manage clients' expectations 7:42 - What has changed in the sports agent industry because of Leigh 10:35 - Find out the hardest part of his job 13:57 - The importance of listening skills in business 15:44 - Tips for overcoming challenges in both personal life and career 21:29 - ‘Where are you now?' 25:02 - What is a typical day for Leigh 26:02 - How critical is the ‘high school phase' for athletes 28:25 - Key standards of becoming a good athlete candidate 33:17 - How cultural richness has a positive impact on honing an athlete's character 38:26 - The formula of success in life 42:05 - Success tips for leveraging 46:05 - How to push back against the forces of hate and promote tolerance 49:57 - What advice would Leigh give his sixteen-year-old self 50:14 - What would be Leigh's last meal on earth? 51:36 - Leigh's favorite music band 52:24 - How to practice gratitude in your life Quotations: “So managing expectations is critical. It's education. It's making sure that someone understands the exact context that they're negotiating it. So that they look at the market and you show them comparable figures and you show 'em from the standpoint of performers on the field and value to team, how they rate among their peers, and then what that leads to in terms of other comparable packages. And the key is managing expectations. You're so much better to under promise and overperform, and it's all about expectations.” - Leigh Steinberg “I think the first key is not having kids play too young. So the younger brain is still in formation and if it takes that to do a concussion for a younger kid.” - Leigh Steinberg “It's getting into someone's heart and mind and seeing them holistically.” - Leigh Steinberg “..you realize that the athletic skillset is just a formula for success in life.” - Leigh Steinberg “Don't push it until I'm forcing you to lock in. Then understand that all people have egos and all people have pride. Don't push someone against the wall.” - Leigh Steinberg Useful Resources: Get a copy here: The Agent: My 40-Year Career Making Deals and Changing the Game by Leigh Steinberg with Michael Arkush Get in touch: Follow Leigh on his Website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn Connect with Ben: https://benreinberg.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therealbenreinberg/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/benreinberg Twitter: https://twitter.com/realbenreinberg FB: https://www.facebook.com/TheRealBenReinberg/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@therealbenreinberg Check out Ben's firm here: https://alliancecgc.com/

Leigh Steinberg is the CEO of Steinberg Sports & Entertainment. He discusses how Judaism has influenced his career as a successful sports agent.
Ep. 50 – A legendary sports agent reflects on an extraordinary career and overcoming seemingly insurmountable personal challenges / Leigh Steinberg, CEO, Steinberg Sports & Entertainment. Early in his career, legendary sports agent Leigh Steinberg had a crisis of conscience. His clients were suffering from multiple concussions and doctors didn't fully understand the long-term impact of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). There was one particular moment that was a turning point for Steinberg. "When we would go to doctors back in that period, no doctor could really tell us how many hits were too many and what the longterm consequences were." So Steinberg decided to make annual brain health seminars a mandatory part of his core practice. He’s had 16 to date, focused on awareness, prevention, and cure. Steinberg has asked himself whether he’s an enabler of this problem, given his continued representation of athletes, but he believes he is bringing value by working to solve this problem. Educating his players about the dangers of concussion is just one way Steinberg has mentored 300+ athletes during a 46-year+ career as CEO of Steinberg Sports & Entertainment. He’s represented some of the biggest names in football, baseball, basketball, boxing and Olympic sports securing more than $3 billion for his pro athletes and directing more than $750 million to charities around the world. Steinberg also requires all of his athletes to create structured plans to consistently give back to their communities as a way of life. Steinberg's blue chip clients include the number one overall pick in the NFL draft for an unprecedented eight times in conjunction with 64 total first round picks. He has represented notable athletes, such as Troy Aikman, Steve Young, Patrick Mahomes, Oscar De La Hoya, and Lennox Lewis, as well as multiple Olympians and professional teams. Steinberg also helps his clients identify their post-retirement second careers and requires them to give back to their communities. The inspiration for Tom Cruise in the Cameron Crowe written and directed movie Jerry Maguire (co-starring Cuba Gooding Jr., in an iconic Oscar-winning supporting actor role), Steinberg has overcome tremendous personal adversity including bankruptcy, a decade-long bout of alcoholism, and run-ins with the law. He says he has since recovered from his financial and emotional crises, been sober for more than ten years, and speaks openly of his alcoholism as a way to help others. “Look, to confront the cravings that come with addiction, it really is necessary in most people's lives to hit bottom, whatever you perceive that bottom is,” says Steinberg. “Your life is so unacceptable that you cannot continue like that.” Steinberg is focused on helping athletes engage in the Black Lives Matter conversations and adapting to COVID-19, especially coming to terms with the prospect of playing and winning in empty stadiums. “In football, for example, we had a draft that cut off the scouting process at a certain point. So it required adaptation and using Zoom to interact with teams, or in the case of a client, we had Tua Tagovailoa taping a workout in a pro passing day that would normally have been done in-person. And the first key and priority is safety, obviously. And none of us really know how the pandemic will play out over time, so we're trying to be sensitive to that,” Steinberg says. “And so for the first time, we're going to have baseball and basketball and hockey with no fans. So that will be different. First of all, it has an economic impact because gate is a large part of the gross revenue. And second of all, we don't know, since performance seems to be tied into home field advantage and stadia filled with screaming fans, we don't know what effect it'll have on the quality of the play.” Read the Transcript Download the PDF Chitra Ragavan: Leigh Steinberg was about a decade into his career as a sports agent when he ha...

125: Leigh Steinberg: CEO and Chairman of the Board at Steinberg Sports and Entertainment in Orange County, California Area talks about reaching his summit as a professional sports agent of over 300 athletes, sliding down the valley of alcoholism, and climbing up a new summit of sobriety and success. Leigh Steinberg Leigh Steinberg is an extremely successful man who has managed to walk the tightrope between the lucrative business of being a sports agent and paying it forward along the way. Not only has he looked for organic ways to get athletes to prepare for their futures during retirement, he has helped to guide them towards giving back to their communities that have given them so much. On this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, we talk with Leigh Steinberg, CEO and Chairman of the Board at Steinberg Sports and Entertainment in Orange County, California. Leigh Steinberg has had many highly impressive achievements along the way in his career. He has had the most amount of overall #1 NFL draft picks with a total of eight, and 60 first-rounders. Leigh has been the agent for basketball, baseball, boxing, and Olympic sports players, over 300 athletes all together. But he also has managed to score big in his win against alcoholism. What You Will Learn: What was it like for Leigh Steinberg to start off with Warren Moon? “At the time Warren (Moon) was the MVP of the Rose Bowl and a really talented quarterback from the University of Washington. He aspired to be a quarterback. But at that time in the NFL the so-called thinking positions, which were centers, quarterbacks, safety were thought by many in the NFL fraternity to be not a great launching pad for African American athletes.” Warren spent 6 years in Edmonton as a part of the Canadian league and proved himself to the NFL. Just how well did Warren Moon do? He ended up being the first pure free agent and wasn’t even the starter and was still the MVP. “At the end he signed the biggest contract yet for an NFL player with the then, Houston Oilers. He ended up playing 23 years, six in the CFL and 17 in the NFL.” Leigh Steinberg also went on to become best friends with Warren Moon. Leigh Steinberg was voted most likely to succeed in his high school class. He was also essentially played by Tom Cruise in the movie Jerry Maguire, the hit movie that Leigh also served as technical advisor on. “I took Cuba Gooding Jr. down to the Super Bowl and made him pretend he was a wide receiver because he had gone to NYU and there was no football there.” Leigh also wrote a New York Times bestselling book called Winning With Integrity. Even though both of Leigh Steinberg’s parents attended UCLA for college, Leigh ended up choosing to go to Berkley for college during the counterculture times of the 1960s. “I had been raised by parents that emphasized two values, one was to treasure relationships, especially family. Are you a good son? Are you a good father? Are you good to your friends? There at critical times when they really need you? And the second was to make a difference in the world. So I was always judged by, did I help people that couldn’t help themselves?” Who was the first professional athlete client that Leigh Steinberg added up representing? “Steve Bartkowski was drafted in January. They had the draft in January then of 1975 and he had had another agent but he wasn’t happy and he asked me to represent him. So there I was, brimming with legal experience. So, I wasn’t sure when I did the Bartkowski negotiation that this was going to be a career. But, I had an epiphany.” Leigh has had the foresight and understanding to see that athletes have the transferal skills to become successful in business. “To be a successful athlete you have to have self-discipline, you have to have an understanding that you may be suffering now and putting work in that is not the most pleasant for future success. You turn down present gratification for future success. You have to take a complex set of information and use it in real time. You have to exhibit courage and ultimate performance under high pressure and teamwork is also a key.” Show Me the Money Leigh realises that it is more important to use the Internet to create new forms of income instead of the friction stemming from the fight between labor and management in professional sports. ”Every time we have a collective bargaining agreement that pits billionaires against millionaires, how much empathy do you think that somebody who has a median income of $60,000 is going to have for either party? So, what we need to do is build the brand.” Winning with Sobriety During this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, Leigh Steinberg also opens up about his past struggle with alcoholism, how it impacted his life negativity, and how he turned it all around and fought back to become sober for the last 10 years. “I shut down everything. Gave my practice to the younger agents. Shut down my house, my condo, my business, and went into sober living. And I said, if nothing else in this world, I will be a sober person and I will be a good parent.” Links to Additional Resources: Leigh Steinberg: Linkedin Twitter Steinberg Sports and Entertainment: steinbergsports.com Laird Superfood – Code: Markp20 [Sponsor] Cascade Mountain Tech [Sponsor]
