This week I'm rebroadcasting my interviews with five Superstars: Judy Collins, Al Kooper, David Amram, Ron Carter and Oscar Hammerstein II. Judy Collins is an iconic Renaissance Artist and Grammy Winning Singer/Songwriter with 55 albums and hit singles including Joni Mitchell's “Both Sides Now” and Stephen Sondheim's “Send In The Clowns”. She has been a dominating force in social activism, as a filmmaker, author and as a keynote speaker. And she had one of the greatest songs of the rock era written about her - “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” by Stephen Stills and Crosby Stills and Nash. In this wonderful interview we discuss her background and successes, including her artistic formative years in the Greenwich Village folk scene of the 1960s with fellow artists Joan Baez, Dave Van Ronk, Richie Havens and Peter Paul and Mary, and she tells a few terrific stories. And we do a Double Songfest. From my collection we will hear 5 albums: Buffalo Springfield album and For What It's Worth, Buffalo Springfield Again album with Bluebird Stephen Stills' demo tape album JUST ROLL TAPE with Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, and Wooden Ships Crosby Stills Nash and Young's DÉJÀ VU album with 4+20 and Carry On And finally, the STEPHEN STILLS 2 solo album with Sugar Babe and Change Partners.   We are now listening to ROCK AND ROLL WOMAN from BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD AGAIN.   These selections were each recorded between 1966 and 1971. Just a small time slice of this singer/songwriter's career.   Stills was between the ages of 21 and 26. These works are important because these songs are each hand crafted by Stills. I also wanted to showcase his array of talents like multi-instrumental musician, arranger, and producer. In addition to being a successful singer/songwriter, who work has had a large musical impact.   Much more for future podcasts.   M1 For What It's Worth (Stephen Stills), Buffalo Springfield, Buffalo Springfield, Released ATCO, LP 1969 (3:00)   Stephen Stills' first HIT recording was FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH (or “Stop, Hey, What's That Sound”). It was 1966. Stills was just 21 years old. This was his first big break. He had written several songs, by now.. Not only did he have an inventory of original songs, he had helped to form a new band. Along with two other singer-songwriters, Richie Furay and Neil Young… they formed Buffalo Springfield out in Los Angeles. Neil Young came from Winnipeg Alberta, and Furay and Stills left a New York City gig with the Au Go-Go Singers, a 9-member group performing at the Café Au Go-Go. Two other Canadians -- bassist Bruce Palmer and rock drummer Dewey Martin were added --- 5 band members in all. 2 Americans, 3 Canadians.   "For What It's Worth" became one of the most recognizable songs of the 1960s. It was first released as a 45 RPM single in late 1966. In t1967, For What It's Worth featured on the first Buffalo Springfield LP.   The lyrics in FOR WHAT ITS WORTH are all about a confrontation Stills had with LAPD Riot Police in Los Angeles' earlier that year. There had been many summer nights of rowdy crowds of kids causing late-night traffic issues in the Sunset Strip neighborhood. LA responded by announcing a curfew of 10PM. As a result, there were reported to have been over 1,000 persons out on the Strip protesting and trouble broke out. There were clashes between police and young pe...

Crosby Stills Nash & Young – die Mitglieder selbst nannten es eher ein Projekt als eine Band. Sicher ist, die Musikgemeinschaft der vier Männer war schicksalhaft für sie alle. Als Vierergruppe, als Trio „Crosby Stills & Nash“ oder in diversen Duo-Konstellationen - ihr Harmoniegesang, ihre komplexen, aber auch eingängigen Lieder zu den Themen der Zeit waren in dieser Konzentration und Innovation einzigartig. Die Eigenständigkeit der Mitglieder war von Anfang an eine wichtige Verabredung zwischen CSN&Y, sie ließ Raum für Solo-Projekte und Ausflüge in andere musikalische Konstellationen. Die Bandgeschichte des Quartetts und auch die des Trios CSN wirkt in Teilen wie die einer romanhaften Familie: voller Eifersucht, Eitelkeiten, aber auch voller Zusammenhalt, Freundschaft und musikalischem Glück. Die Wurzeln der vier Mitglieder liegen in den 60er Jahren auch in großen Erfolgen mit früheren Bandprojekten. Hoje vamos falar desse trio de trovadores contraculturais, falamos do disco "Crosby Stills and Nash" de 1969, ainda sem o Young, que entraria logo depois para gravar o disco "Deja vu" e compor a formação como quarteto, não mais trio. "Deja vu" é um disco também estupendo e Neil Young talvez seja o mais completo e denso entre os quatro artistas, mas o podcaster ainda acha esse disco do trio superior. Pena afiada dos três. Por exemplo, David Crosby na psicodélica "Guinnevere”, faixa em que a caneta de Crosby nos arremessa a uma poesia de amor e liberdade e mistério, colocando o libelo libertário, existencial e contracultural de Dylan em "Like a rolling stone" outros ingredientes. Crosby inseria nessa liberdade em se perder e nessa alta carga existencial e beatnik dos anos 60 do eu lírico dylanesco um certo enigma alegórico em forma de mulher. Guinnevere é a famosa mulher dividida entre Lancelot e Rei Arthur, mas segundo uma entrevista era para Crosby outras duas: Joni Mitchel ou possivelmente uma namorada de Crosby da época ou uma terceira mulher que ele não revelou. Mas de todo jeito parece uma porta, um caminho que se segue sem que se saiba onde seus passos o levam, que se abre ao horizonte incógnito e insondável. A recusa à forma de vida dominado pelo status quo americano e sua luta beligerante representada nos horrores da guerra do Vietnã era uma força motriz para esses rapazes doidões em seus baseados e LSDs e de tudo um pouco foi rolando ao longo da carreira de todos.Stephen Stills arrasa no blues groovesado, psicodélico e um tico jazzy de “Wooden Ships”. Na letra a gente consegue bem entender o momento, a guerra do Vietnã, a aflição que envolvia a cena contrcultural para além da utopia, e compreendemos também a própria utopia hippie. Não é por acaso que Crosby, Nash, Young e Stills fizeram campanha para Bernie Sanders. "Helplessly hoping", de Stephen Stills, exala graciosidade e lirismo hippie; "Lady of the island", de Graham Nash, é uma faixa belíssima e densa também, o disco inteiro é uma obra-prima. Toda a mistura e alquimia musical desse folk rock que pavimenta um caminho para o soft rock – de quebra para o Adult Contemporary –, Steely Dan, Doobie Borthers e toda uma geração dos anos 70 que foi influenciada pelo CSN (alguns dizem que até o rock progressivo). Sobre o rock progressivo não sei, talvez na complexidade ousada das quebras rítmicas e viradas em "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes".O que todos nós lamentamos é que esses ícones da cena flower power não eram muito amorosos uns com os outros. Pegaram a fama de hippies brigões, que abusavam de todas as drogas full time e disputavam holofotes em brigas de ego. E o trio se desmantelou. Na verdade se desmantelou já como quarteto, embora a formação de trio tenha tido uma bela volta em 1977 no clássico disco intitulado "CSN", conhecido como “o disco do barco” por causa da capa. Mas mesmo assim, que brisa deliciosa esse álbum, que trip boa!Bora dar o play! Alicia has the story of an unforgettable romance - not because it was long-lasting, but because of how it was documented. In the 60s, a new generation of young musicians were pioneering modern music. In this milieu, Stephen Stills was particularly taken with Judy Collins, and penned a song for the ages in an effort to win her heart. This week, we look at an unusual local music success story. Foxes and Fossils, a homegrown cover band from Smyrna, has never released a commercial record. They've never gone on tour. Their promotion has occurred — almost accidentally — by word of mouth. They began 10 years ago with a performance in a pizza parlor and haven't progressed much from there. Then, last year, something strange started happening online. Videos of live Foxes and Fossils shows gathered steam on YouTube, led by their video of the Crosby, Stills & Nash 1969 chestnut, “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.” Hear all about it from the AJC's Bo Emerson.

Judy Collins made her debut as a classical pianist playing a Mozart concerto when she was 13. But folk music stole her heart in the days when Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie were capturing the bohemian spirit. In the 60s and 70s Collins recorded songs by Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen and Stephen Sondheim. And there were songs written about her like Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, a big hit for Crosby, Stills and Nash.  We talk about love gone wrong, eating disorders, alcoholism and musical legends on this episode of “Now What?” which was produced with help from Stephanie Hou, Steve Zimmer and Gabe Zimmer. Most people know the legend of Judy Collins - the blue-eyed beauty - who inspired Suite Judy Blue Eyes by Stephen Stills of Crosby, Stills and Nash. In this candid chat with host Robin Milling, Judy talks about the stories that have shaped her musical history. Judy tells Robin about her on-going musical collaboration with Stills and their singing union on the CD Stills & Collins. After all these years, they are performing live together enriched even more by their friendship. She talks about what it's like to have songs written about her and the ones she discovered along the way like Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now that gave her Top 10 success. Along with those heady times there were demons to battle. Judy unabashedly shares her struggles with alcoholism and how she continues one day at a time to deal with the debilitating addiction that almost cost her career.  At 79, Collins shows no signs of slowing down. She tells Robin about her future plans and what she hopes to accomplish in the worlds of music, books, and possibly even Broadway.

Interview with Renowned Singer/Songwriter/Artist, Judy Collins Welcome to the Not Old Better Show.  Today, I talk to the incomparable, Judy Collins.  Judy Collins is appearing live at the Tally Ho Theater, in Leesburg Virginia, Friday night May 13.  Other upcoming tour dates are available on her web site, judycollins.com  We all know Judy from the Crosby Stills & Nash hit, “Suite Judy Blue Eyes,” and she is certainly a favorite of our audience, and someone who's beautiful soprano voice transcends most music styles, genres and the test of time, making her “not old, but truly better.”  One of the leading singers of the 1960s and 1970s, Judy Collins was born on May 1 (my birthday, too). She grew up in Denver, Colorado, where she began studying classical piano at the age of 5. In her teens, Collins turned to folk music. She scored her first commercial hit in 1967 with the iconic Joni Mitchell song, "Both Sides Now.” Which is playing now.  In our interview today, among the many subjects Judy talks about is her early recording career with Elektra Records, what she learned and how it influenced the rest of her work. Unlike Joan Baez, who she was frequently compared, she used her classical music training to evolve into being a singer of art songs and show tunes, sometimes employing semi-classical arrangements. After her public debut at age 13 as a classical pianist, July Collins continued to make her mark. She's recorded more than 40 albums, using her lifelong love of the guitar and a broad range of material—from folk and pop to standards and her own compositions. Known for her clear, crisp soprano voice.  Both Pete Seeger and Woodie Guthrie are influences, and Judy recorded one of her very first hits, a song by Pete Seeger, Turn, Turn, Turn, which you'll hear. Judy Collins is famous for her versions of songs by Joni Mitchell, Randy Newman, Blood Sweat & Tears, and Judy's version of the moving “Send in The Clowns,” by Steven Sondheim, from the musical, A Little Night Music, is among my favorite songs of all time. The song earned her a Grammy nomination and Sondheim took home the award for Song of the Year. Her recording of the song hit the charts twice, first in 1975 and then in 1977. She's also written two memoirs, a children's book and a novel and is an accomplished painter, actress, filmmaker and record label head. In 1969, Collins made her stage debut appearing in a New York City revival of Peer Gynt (pear gint) with Stacy Keach and Olympia Dukakis. She later made other appearances on television, including guest spots on The Muppet Show and Sesame Street. Working behind the camera, Collins produced and co-directed the 1974 documentary Antonia: A Portrait of the Woman about her former piano teacher. The film received an Academy Award nomination. Collins is a longtime social activist for causes that include UNICEF, suicide prevention, and artist's rights. Judy Collins has been a champion for equal rights for women and civil rights. During the 1960s and 1970s, Collins appeared at numerous protests calling for the end of the Vietnam War. She also helped African Americans register to vote in the South. After four decades, she still records and tours. Now in her seventies, Collins continues to pursue her creative passions, including as a published author. She established her own label, Wildflower Records, in 2000 to release her own music and to support the work of the other artists. Through Wildflower, Collins put out 2010's Paradise, which features appearances by Stephen Stills and Joan Baez. Collins maintains a heavy tour schedule, playing more than 80 dates per year. She is also popular on the lecture circuit, giving talks about mental health issues and suicide prevention.Her latest project is a unique duets album titled Strangers Again, on Judy Collins' own Wildflower label, available on Amazon. A few takes and we were done. The songs have muscle, they don't sound dated or contrived, they're very natural and organic. It's been the most magical experience of my life and I can't wait to tour with these guys and start recording again!”
