I visited Mark Alice Durant at his home in Maryland to talk about his book, Summer of the White Fox, and After, published by Saint Lucy Books. We talk about how Mark came to photography and why he started his own publishing imprint. Summer of the White Fox, and After is a memoir and a monograph, with a touch of history and philosophy weaved into the essay. It is a recounting of grief and loss that enveloped Mark and his family through distinct events and all during the pandemic. It is also a story about experiencing love and care in ways that were, perhaps, unforseeable before all of the tragedies struck Mark's family. https://www.saintlucybooks.com/shop/p/summer-of-the-white-fox-and-after | https://www.instagram.com/saint_lucy_books/ This podcast is sponsored by the Charcoal Book Club Begin Building your dream photobook library today at https://charcoalbookclub.com Mark Alice Durant is a photographer whose photographs, installations, and performances have been presented internationally including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and Artist's Space in New York. Reflections From My Art Table

It's a lovely cloudy morning here in Wisconsin and I'm sitting at my little art table in my bedroom with coffee and the windows open that look out onto the woods around our house. I love these quiet mornings, this is the time when I sit and wander inside myself and with whatever inspires me in the moment. Today that is a sketchbook/art journal I wrote in two years ago that I picked up off my shelf the other day and started flipping through. I came across little sketches, creative ideas and thoughts I had forgotten about and they began stirring up fresh creative ideas and reflections. It reminded me how important it is to look back sometimes and how glad I am that I write things down by hand, not just on my computer or my phone, which I also do a lot of. But it is such a different, precious experience to keep handwritten journals and sketchbooks and then get to find them again later. One entry I found was from October 2022 with a quote from the gorgeous book by Mark Nepo called Drinking from the River of Light: The Life of Expression that I was reading at the time which I share on the podcast. He writes about “Truth windows”, an interior window placed inside an ancient style of dwellings to reveal what the walls were made of. When I read this, it blew the windows of my mind and heart wide open with inspiration and awe! I hope you enjoy listening. -See photos of my little art table, art journal I mention and a couple of photos of truth windows I found here: https://deep-rooted-healing.com/podcast/episode-42 -Sign up for my newsletter to receive updates on what I'm creating and offering: https://emmafreeman.myflodesk.com/newsletter -See all of my on-demand creative classes and retreats here: www.deep-rooted-healing.com/classes -Follow me on Instagram @deeprootedhealing. -Visit my website: www.deep-rooted-healing.com. I am so excited to say that my guest on the great women artists podcast is the renowned curator, scholar, and expert in 15th- and 16th-century Italian drawings, Furio Rinaldi to discuss TAMARA DE LEMPICKA! Dubbed “the Baroness with the Brush'', Lempicka at the height of the 1920s found herself at the centre of Parisian life, and constructed some of the most radical, liberal and avant-garde images. From reworking traditional subjects to melding the meticulous techniques of Renaissance painting with cold and shiny art-deco aesthetics to evoke the fast-industrialising world. Born in Poland at the end of the 19th century, Lempicka was raised in Russia, but escaped at the outbreak of the revolution. From there, she settled in Paris: the centre of the avant-garde, and thrived. She painted celebrated characters in the highest fashions of the day, and embraced sexual liberations. Epitomising the modern woman, she was apparently known to break only for “baths and champagne”, this was, of course in her modernist apartment-slash-studio, designed by her equally successful sister, Adrienne Górska. Currently holding the post of Curator of drawings and prints at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the largest collection of works on paper in Western United States – where he has just staged the most extraordinary Botticelli exhibition – Furio is acclaimed for his work on Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael and Michelangelo. A writer – he has published extensively in The Burlington Magazine, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Journal and more, but perhaps he is best known for his curatorial eye, having organised the fantastic Legion of Honor exhibition Color into Line: Pastel from the Renaissance to the Present, and next year, will curate a groundbreaking exhibition – and the first major show on the West Coast – on the Polish-born painter Tamara de Lempicka – who is very excitingly the artists we will be discussing today. -- THIS EPISODE IS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY THE LEVETT COLLECTION: https://www.instagram.com/famm.mougins // https://www.merrellpublishers.com/9781858947037 ENJOY!!! Faigie also has taught adult creativity through mixed media and alcohol inks. She teaches the difference between creativity and artistic ability and how our own thoughts on this subject likely stems from our childhood experiences.   Topics discussed: [02:53] How a business course unexpectedly sparked creativity in Faigie [08:34] Why she was initially rejected from a coaching program and how taking initiative changed her coaches mind [12:02] How perfectionism stifles creativity; art is problem-solving. [21:04] How and why creativity develops differently in us and when we begin to see self-doubt with our own creative abilities [22:27] How mixed media art has been both transformational and liberating for Faigie [27:39] Teaching for artistic behavior. Faigie's choice-based program  that teaches drawing, collage, painting and creates an exciting learning environment for kids [31:36] Guiding kids to embrace challenges in creativity [33:11] Integration of art in education and curriculum [37:06] Teaching art concepts with freedom, not restrictions [47:49] How she got involved with alcohol inks and her course Connect with Faigie: www.eduart4kids.com www.eduart4kids.com/beyond www.instagram.com/eduart4kids https://www.pinterest.com/faigie/ https://www.facebook.com/eduart4kids/

Capturing the moment and sensations is everything to Kasia - her language is art. She paints, collages and art journals to figure out her past, present and future. She scribbles, spills, tears, paints and writes to let the emotions out. She asks questions and works out her answers through colour, texture, patterns and dynamic connections between contradictions. Kasia's work is a perfect reflection of her everyday reality - the colours and subjects reveal the connections that she makes between her past and now. The rage and wildness observed and experienced in them, whether through the media or in a visit to the doctor's office in a female body, serve as a balm to the injustices that only mortality might rectify: “perhaps the dead will breathe again,” writes Versella. Yet even in our “common stress dream” or the dream of “America,” the poet isn't blind to the enduring spirit of not just the dead, but also the living: “the humpback whale returns to the Hudson, hope on his lips.” Hope–these poems, what these poems say–can be made from the wreckage."More about Alise can be found on her website at: https://aliseversella.com/

John 14, 1-6: 'Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God still, and trust in me. There are many rooms in my Father's house; if there were not, I should have told you. I am going now to prepare a place for you, and after I have gone and prepared you a place, I shall return to take you with me; so that where I am you may be too. You know the way to the place where I am going.' Thomas said, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way?' Jesus said: ‘I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one can come to the Father except through me.' The Lord Jesus understands the internal upheaval of the apostles. He sees clearly that they are troubled, that they are anxious and nervous. I may not even have shown externally, but he could read their hearts well. Now he reads our hearts and invites us to be men and women of peace. Music: Tears keep flowing by Bert Alink. This is a rebroadcast of an episode of This Thing We Call Art, a podcast where the host Kelly Lloyd speaks to people in the arts about their livelihoods. Lloyd originally interviewed artist Gordon Hall on March 1, 2021 and the 43-minute episode featuring portions of the three-hour-long conversation was released on February 17, 2022. The podcast features a conversation about Hall and Lloyd's experiences in art education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, how art institutions handle interdisciplinarity, and the ethical responsibility of art school educators. Hall, currently an Assistant Professor of Sculpture at Vassar College, has included an addition to this rebroadcast to highlight how in the Spring of 2022, the contingent faculty at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago formed a union, Art Institute of Chicago Workers United, (AICWU) which is now certified with the National Labor Relations Board. The union is currently preparing to negotiate their first contract. You can follow their efforts and support them at aicwu.org and on social media at AIC_WU on Instagram, AICWUTweets on Twitter, and AIC Workers on Facebook. Kelly Lloyd is a transdisciplinary artist who focuses on issues of representation and knowledge production and prioritizes public-facing collaborative research. Lloyd has recently held solo exhibitions at the Royal Academy Schools (London), Crybaby (Berlin), Bill's Auto (Chicago), Demo Room (Aarhus), and Dirty House (London) for which she won the Art Licks Workweek Prize. Lloyd was the Starr Fellow at the Royal Academy Schools during the 2018/19 school year and is currently studying at The University of Oxford's Ruskin School of Art and Wadham College for her DPhil in Practice-Led Fine Art with support from an All Souls-AHRC Graduate Scholarship and an Open-Oxford-Cambridge Doctoral Training Programme Studentship. In 2021, Lloyd launched This Thing We Call Art, a podcast and online archive featuring excerpts from 50+ interviews with people in the arts she has conducted since 2017. Gordon Hall is an artist based in New York who makes sculptures and performances. Hall has had solo presentations at the MIT List Visual Arts Center, The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, The Renaissance Society, EMPAC, and Temple Contemporary, and has been in group exhibitions at The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Brooklyn Museum, The Hessel Museum, Art in General, White Columns, Socrates Sculpture Park, among many other venues. Hall's writing and interviews have been published widely, including in Art Journal, Artforum, Art in America, and Bomb, as well as in Walker Art Center's Artist Op-Ed Series, What About Power? Inquiries Into Contemporary Sculpture (published by SculptureCenter), and Documents of Contemporary Art: Queer (published by Whitechapel and MIT Press.) A volume of Hall's collected essays, interviews, and performance scripts was published by Portland Institute for Contemporary Art in 2019. Hall is Assistant Professor of Sculpture at Vassar College.
