In this episode of the XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar chats with Saint Leonard—the visionary artist formerly known as Kieran Leonard—about the extraordinary journey that led to his third and most ambitious album, The Golden Hour. From recording his debut, Good Luck Everybody, at Stanley Kubrick's historic home to headlining sold-out shows at London's The Windmill and Third Man Records and supporting The Libertines on tour, Saint Leonard has built a reputation for fearless reinvention. In this fascinating conversation, Leonard shares the wild and deeply personal story behind The Golden Hour—an album shaped by Wild nights in Berlin's underbelly, Spiritual awakenings in India, Isolation in a GDR-era apartment during the pandemic, and Collaborations with Brian Eno and members of Fat White Family. Recorded at the legendary Hansa Studios in Berlin and Paul Epworth's Church Studios in London, The Golden Hour blends electronic textures, techno pulses, and Weimar cabaret flair—all woven together with Leonard's surreal storytelling and dark wit. Highlights include: Meeting Fat White Family by chance in Berlin and forming a band overnight Collaborating with Brian Eno and how it reshaped his sonic vision Wrestling with identity, paranoia, and rebirth during lockdown Using music to capture the absurdity of existence—with a wink The Golden Hour is not just an album—it's a full-blown experience: cinematic, unhinged, and unforgettable. Luke Pickering, head engineer at London's Church Studios, explains what entices artists including Adele, Lana Del Rey, U2 and Radiohead to record there, what he has learnt from the studio's owner, Paul Epworth, and why the beating heart of the historic building is Studio 1 – home to one of the rarest recording and mixing desks in the world, a 72-channel vintage EMI Neve console.
Like Madonna, Bono, Prince and Beyoncé before her, Adele is one of the great mononymous superstars of our time. Adele Adkins was born on May 5, 1988 in Tottenham, a working class town in northern London known best for its football club, Tottenham Hotspur. Her mom Penny Adkins, was only 18 when she was born and when she was only two, Adele's father upped and left for Wales; he would never be in the picture as Adele grew up. From the age of 4, Adele began to sing at every opportunity she would get. When the Spice Girls emerged, young Adele would become obsessed with the Girl Powerful group. In 2016, she would tell Vogue, “People always think I joke about this, but the Spice Girls blew up when I was seven, and seeing them coming from a humble background — there was hope in it. It was really a massive part of my life when the whole Girl Power thing happened.” When she was 11, her mum and stepdad moved her to West Norwood in south London, which she would immortalize in her 2007 hit “Hometown Glory.” It was there that Adele would fall in love with contemporary R&B and the big, classic voices that would shape her voice in the years to come. “Hometown Glory,” was first released in October 2007 as a limited 7-inch on a small label called Pacemaker. The song didn't do much until it was re-released the following year by XL. But the buzz was growing for Adele. As 2008 arrived, she became the youngest artist ever to win the BBC's Sound of 2008 award, which is selected by music critics and industry figures searching for the UK's most promising new music talent. She also took home the Critic's Choice Award at the BRITs, which was given to the top rising star. Soon after, Adele released her debut album, 19, on January 28, 2008. She named it 19 because, well, that's how old she was when she recorded the album. It didn't take long for critics and fans to fixate on her age, and how mature she sounded for someone who was only 19. Adele was quickly popping up everywhere on both sides of the pond. 19 was on the shortlist of nominees for the coveted Mercury Prize, which is awarded for the best album released by a musical act from the United Kingdom or Ireland.”Hometown Glory” popped up all over TV, soundtracking huge dramatic scenes in countless TV shows like Grey's Anatomy, So You Think You Can Dance, Coronation Street and 90210. But perhaps the greatest achievement, at least in Adele's eyes, was one of her heroes, Beyoncé calling her “THE British singer,” separating her from the rest of the pack. Her followup single “Chasing Pavements” earned Adele her first Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, beating out her former classmate Leona Lewis. It was also nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Even bigger than that, Adele also won Best New Artist. Now with a lot more pressure on her, Adele was ready to record her followup album Feeling the raw sting of a recent breakup, Adele reached out to Paul Epworth in October 2009 and immediately they headed into the studio. She brought him a ballad she had begun writing a couple years ago about a boy, which he felt needed to be stronger and more aggressive in its arrangement. With Epworth's help they channeled the anger she felt from her recent split and used some guitar riffs he had previously written down. As the two worked together, Adele began to feel her heart race, which became the beat of the song. The two of them came up with the verses and the chords of the song in under 15 minutes, with the rest only taking about two hours. This is the true story of Adele's iconic song 'Rolling in the Deep' with newly unearthed footage from Adele herself! John sits down with indie rock band Bombay Bicycle Club to talk about their sixth studio album ‘My Big Day'. Bombay Bicycle Club are a four-piece band from London, that broke onto the indie music scene with their genre defining debut album ‘I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose' in 2009. Since then they have been releasing a steady stream of music which has been met with high critical acclaim, earning them an Ivor Novello and a Mercury Prize nominations. Chatting with band members Jack Steadman and Ed Nash, the three cover a range of topics including the inspiration behind the album, their use of sampling in their music, how over-thinking can negatively influence the production process, and their collaboration with music legends Damon Albarn, Paul Epworth & Chaka Khan. Unapologetically more sumptuous & grandiose than its captivating predecessor, the usual cavalcade of instruments & fantastic rhythms are once more evident.

Welcome back to the 80s! According to British music producer, musician and songwriter Paul Epworth, “Pop music has greater power to change people and to affect people because it's a universal language. You don't have to understand music to understand the power of a pop song.” We couldn't agree more. In Episode 11 we celebrate the power of 80s pop with Grammy winners, one hit wonders, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, and, of course, the King of Pop. James Vincent McMorrow recently released Grapefruit Season, his fifth album. It features contributions from producers and writers like Kenny Beats and Adele collaborator Paul Epworth, and sees him embracing the synths and hip-hop production elements he first started utilising on his second record, 2014's Post Tropical. When he released that album it shocked quite a lot of people, who were expecting him to continue down the nu-folk path of his debut LP, Early In The Morning. But as with contemporaries like Bon Iver, James has evolved beyond his first album, and we talk about that journey in this interview. We also discuss his upbringing in Ireland, his path to success, and the mental health issues he's dealt with along the way.
Back in summer 2020, John headed over to The Church Studios to catch up with James Vincent McMorrow, Paul Epworth and Lil Silva to talk about how they wrote, recorded and produced James's album ‘Grapefruit Season'. Taking tracks from Dublin to London to LA and back, James talks us through the myriad of iterations the songs went through, exploring the different writing situations and how all of his collaborators had such varied musical impacts. Paul and TJ lend their producer expertise pulling out individual stems and breaking songs apart, as well as discussing their approaches towards bringing energy to the studio, and sharing thoughts on how production, sounds and songwriting are one and the same. Listen to find out about the lyric James spent all of his life waiting for, why Paul was such a terrible studio assistant and how a serendipitous ‘adapter' hunt led to the trio's partnership. We had the pleasure of interviewing Ben Thatcher of Royal Blood over Zoom video! Royal Blood release their long-awaited third album Typhoons today via Warner Records. The four album singles and videos ("Trouble’s Coming,""Typhoons," "Limbo," and "Boilermaker") leading up to the album have created an overwhelming global impact calling Typhoons the duo’s best record to date. Upon the album’s release, Royal Blood have already accrued over 50 million streams and the biggest US airplay of their career crashing into the Rock and ALT charts last fall and consistently raising for the past 30 weeks to the #1 position. When Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher sat down to talk about making a new album, they knew what they wanted to achieve. It involved a conscious return to their roots, back when they had made music that was influenced by Daft Punk, Justice, and Philippe Zdar of Cassius. It also called for a similar back-to-basics approach to what had made their self-titled debut album so thrilling, visceral and original. The album bursts into breathless attack when the fierce metallic grooves of “Who Needs Friends” hits an early visceral peak. Royal Blood further reference their fresh array of influences by deploying vocoder-effected vocals on “Million & One” and evoking the sound of a hyper aggressive, Prince influence on “Mad Visions.” It ends with a final surprise in the shape of the stark piano ballad “All We Have Is Now,” a vulnerable and revealing reminder to live in the moment. That new approach manifested itself in the duo’s decision to produce the majority of Typhoons themselves. Already established as a fan favourite during their 2019 UK live shows, the studio version of “Boilermaker” was produced by Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, the two bands having first connected when Royal Blood supported them on a massive North American tour. Meanwhile, the multiple Grammy Award-winner Paul Epworth produced “Who Needs Friends” and contributed additional production to “Trouble’s Coming.” We want to hear from you! This week I chatted with my old band mate Pablo Tato. Pablo is a London based session guitarist/composer/producer who played with me in my Pillarcat project many moons ago. Since then he has gone on to play in studio for the likes of Paul Epworth, Adele, Lana del Ray and is on the road with Sophie Ellis-Bextor and many other well known acts. Since the pandemic began Pablo took to creating the wonderful A|Part project where he produced an album of cover version with many of the performers he has graced the stages with over the years, including your truly. The album has a vinyl release and is well worth checking out : https://open.spotify.com/artist/2MuZZ61yWK9An3JfZQUqPp?si=Ts0S_jUbQxKZAtFqUjzrlg It was such a pleasure to catch up with an old friend who has laid some guitar down for legends of the top end game. The Maximo Park frontman delves into his background in music and talks about how he got the job. He reveals how the band were signed, working with famous producers such as Paul Epworth and Gil Norton, and the new single and forthcoming album Nature Always Wins, which was recorded during lockdown in a unique way that had Paul acting outside of his comfort zone.
If you don’t know Paul Epworth’s name, you’ll certainly know his music, as he’s produced for the likes of Adele, Florence and the Machine and Rihanna. He asks 100 gecs, Arlo Parks and Dave Okumu about working with analogue equipment in a digital world, studio disasters, ideas that evaporate as they take too long to capture, and the difference between making your own music as opposed to making it for other people. Futuristic pop duo 100 gecs's debut album, 1000 gecs, captivated fans all over the world, including Charli XCX, Rico Nasty and Fall Out Boy, and they’ve been described as a “brain-melting, genre-crushing vision of pop’s future”. Arlo Parks is a 20-year-old musician and poet who is one of the most exciting artists coming out of London right now. She is redefining intelligent pop-soul with her thoughtful, confessional music that has seen her described as "the voice of Generation Z". And Dave Okumu is a producer and songwriter, known for fronting the Mercury Prize-nominated band The Invisible. He is one of the most sought-after collaborators in music, having worked with Adele, Amy Winehouse, Yoko Ono, King Sunny Ade, Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien, and Tony Allen.
Sonic Youth co-founder Thurston Moore sits down with Kyle Meredith to discuss By The Fire, his latest solo album and one that finds him taking inspiration from The Rolling Stones and The Replacements. Moore talks about working with producer Paul Epworth, the record’s classic rock moments, messing with traditional sounds, and playing to his past. The No Wave godfather also tells us about the themes of enlightenment, how all art is political, and voting for a candidate who will give progressive voices a seat at the table. Moore also tells us about a biography in the works, Sonic Life, which could see release in the next year. On our new episode, Neil Cowley of the Neil Cowley trio reflects on how he and Adele nailed the iconic Bob Dylan cover of Make You Feel My Love first take, being produced by Paul Epworth on Rolling in the Deep, recording at Nil Frahms' studio and recording with Kelly Jones of Stereophonics.
Launching into a brand new season, John rockets over to The Church Studios to catch up with super-producer Paul Epworth, Harry Edwards and Riley MacIntyre to talk about how they wrote, recorded and produced Paul’s debut album ‘Voyager’. Paul shines a light on the five year on-off process of bringing the record to life, pulling apart the cosmic sounds and samples that form the basis of the album. From turning his studio desk into an instrument to serendipitous happenings, we hear Paul’s techniques of creating the perfect environment suitable for writing an expansive space concept album. Listen to find out what happens when you put a guitar through his ‘multi-story car park’ of pedals, how a SpaceX launch impacted the album, and how Paul stopped himself from just making techno. This week, Jamie O’Duibhir of the Anti-Church stream on Twitch joins us for a big Bond fight as Macintosh and Maud are throwing down on which of the Craig Bond films will be crowned the champion. Maud’s already gone on record as saying Casino Royale is the greatest Bond movie ever, or at least in the running. But Macintosh thinks this might be the movie to beat. Why, you ask? Well for one thing, this movie, directed by Great Director Sam Mendes with legend and master cinematographer Roger Deakins, is the most beautifully shot and crafted Bond film to date. Yet it’s also the most quintessentially James Bond film in a long time, with images and character elements that feel like they’ve transported right back to Sean Connery’s vision of the character. Add a healthy dose of Judi Dench, finally taking a major role, along with a badass new Moneypenny, and you’re really cooking with gas in this new era of Bond. We make the case for Skyfall this week on Macintosh & Maud Haven’t Seen What?! This week’s episode is focused on hip-hop’s enfant terrible Azealia Banks. Hear an exclusive archive interview with the New York rapper, recorded in 2011 as ‘212’ was blowing up but she hadn’t yet signed a record deal. Banks also talks about working with producer Paul Epworth and her biggest influences, and also schools Rick on underground indie. Meanwhile, Rick and Sarah ponder whether Azealia’s penchant for a celebrity beef has overshadowed her recorded output in the years since and whether she’ll ever truly put the focus back on her amazing music. An immense and potent zone of creativity! we learn of Paul's journey from shed to Holy rooms and his incredible rise :) Producing Adele. Let's just think about that for a second shall we!?! In this first edition of our podcast, Richard speaks to Dave Okumu of The Invisible. Dave's enormous talent is matched only by his wisdom and modesty. So whilst you get a sense of some of his notable work from this conversation, it's worth re-stating just how hugely respected this quiet giant is. The band's debut album was Mercury nominated, as was Dave's debut album as a producer (Jessie Ware's stunning "Devotion"). His and the band's collaborations include work with the likes of Grace Jones, Adele, Conan Moccasin, Paloma Faith, Paul Epworth, Anna Calvi and Floating Points and in terms of raw ability, Dave is widely regarded as one of the finest guitarists working in music today.
Peter Bjorn And John are now a decade removed from their breakthrough single, "Young Folks." However, the Swedish trio has remained consistently busy since then, and this year they released their seventh studio album, "Breakin' Point." The band worked on the record for five years with several producers, including Adele and Paul McCartney collaborator Paul Epworth. The result is a more pop-centric album than previous releases. In addition to performing four new songs in our studio, the band spoke with Alisha Sweeney about approaching the new album as a series of unique singles, the logistics of working with many producers on the same record and running the new INGRID recording studio and label in Stockholm, Sweden.
If you just know them from "that whistle song," it's time to get your head in the game. Peter Bjorn and John are back with their first album in five years, and "Breakin' Point" is pure alt-pop fireworks. The Swedish trio stopped by Billboard's New York office to discuss how new attitudes in the indie rock game helped them get on board with superstar producers like Paul Epworth, Greg Kurstin, and Emile Haynie. With John Wilson. Dame Judi Dench leads a cast of British stars, including Bill Nighy and Maggie Smith, in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, a film which follows a group of pensioners attracted by the prospect of spending their golden years in India. Joan Bakewell gives her verdict. Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller is about to open a new exhibition which brings together almost all his major works to date, including installations, videos, photographs, performance works and sound pieces. Some works also feature volunteers as participants. John talks to Jeremy and to three of the volunteers. On the eve of the 2012 Brit Awards, John speaks to nominees who have found inspiration in great literary figures, with Kate Bush and Laura Marling on James Joyce and Charlotte Bronte, Critics' Choice Winner Emeli Sande on Virginia Woolf, Guy Garvey from Elbow on Alan Bennett; and PJ Harvey on Harold Pinter. Plus producer Paul Epworth on working on the album which dominated 2011 - Adele's 21. Producer Rebecca Nicholson.

With John Wilson. Paul Merton reviews the new silent film The Artist, which with six Golden Globe nominations is already the surprise hit of this year's Hollywood awards season. Adele's producer Paul Epworth discusses his part in creating this year's biggest album, 21, for which he has received four Grammy nominations, and how he and Adele came up with the hit song Rolling in the Deep. It's almost a century since a Parisian barber's shop began the urban romance with neon when it put up the first commercial neon sign. Although neon has fallen out of commercial favour, artists are breathing new life into the medium. John went to the Neon Workshops in Wakefield, Yorkshire, to learn how to make his own neon artwork. The neon art is now installed at the BBC's building in Salford. The graphic designer Peter Saville, famed for his record sleeves for the likes of New Order, Joy Division, Roxy Music and Pulp - and a huge neon fan - joins John, along with the Junior Royal Northern College Brass Quintet and the BBC North Staff Choir, to switch on the first Front Row artwork. Producer Ekene Akalawu.
