In episode #292, we welcome Tappara Head Coach Rikard Grönborg. Last time we spoke with Grönborg, he and the Swedish National team were coming off back-to-back Gold medals at the World Championships, while he was also preparing to speak at TCS Live in 2019. His presentation on the evolution of coaching and player development in Sweden is a must watch. You can check it out at The Coaches Site. Grönborg was then hired by the Zurich Lions heading into the 2019-2020 season, his first opportunity to coach a club team in professional hockey. He would lead the Lions to first place in the NLA standings prior to his first season being cut short due to the COVID pandemic. From Zurich, he would head north to Finland, joining Tappara, and in the process, become the first non-Finnish coach to coach in the Liga. In his first season, he would lead Tappara to a league Championship. Now in his second season, he's managing a younger roster, but also an organizational shift focused on sports science and homegrown talent. Listen as he shares why he's always accepted the challenge of trying something different, how to get players out of their comfort zone, and how to encourage your players to make decisions.

Missing data in aging studies, especially in the assessment of gait speed (the time it takes individuals to cover a set distance), presents a significant challenge. The elderly are more prone to health and functional issues, which often interfere with data collection efforts. Given that gait speed is a key indicator of functional status and overall health in older individuals, ensuring its availability and accurate measurement is essential for the integrity of aging research. In a new study, researchers Robert Thiesmeier, Ahmad Abbadi, Debora Rizzuto, Amaia Calderón-Larrañaga, Scott M. Hofer, and Nicola Orsini from Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm University, Stockholm Gerontology Research Center, and Oregon Health and Science University address the systematic challenge of missing gait speed data in aging research and explore the application of multiple imputation (MI), a statistical technique that has emerged as a constructive approach to handle such gaps in data. The team critically examined the implementation strategies, methodologies, and the impact that these missing variables could have on the outcomes of aging studies, thereby offering a framework to manage and interpret incomplete datasets in aging research. On February 14, 2024, their research paper was published in Aging's Volume 16, Issue 4, entitled, “Multiple imputation of systematically missing data on gait speed in the Swedish National Study on Aging and Care.” “[...] this study aims to investigate and assess the performance of different MI strategies specifically targeting the systematically missing discrete variable of gait speed in the SNAC [Swedish National Study on Aging and Care] IPDMA [individual participant data meta-analyses] with only four large cohort studies.” Full blog - https://aging-us.org/2024/03/overcoming-missing-data-in-the-swedish-national-study-on-aging/ Paper DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.205552 Corresponding authors - Robert Thiesmeier - robert.thiesmeier@ki.se Sign up for free Altmetric alerts about this article - https://aging.altmetric.com/details/email_updates?id=10.18632%2Faging.205552 Subscribe for free publication alerts from Aging - https://www.aging-us.com/subscribe-to-toc-alerts Keywords - aging, simulation, systematically missing values, individual participant data, meta-analysis, gait speed About Aging-US Launched in 2009, Aging-US publishes papers of general interest and biological significance in all fields of aging research and age-related diseases, including cancer—and now, with a special focus on COVID-19 vulnerability as an age-dependent syndrome. In this episode of PING, APNIC's Chief Scientist Geoff Huston discusses how Sweden built a national time distribution system and the nature of time in the modern Internet. At the RIPE86 Meeting held in Rotterdam in May of this year, Karin Ahl, the CEO of Netnod presented a talk titled “How Sweden Built a World-Leading Time Network” A central problem in time distribution on the Internet is firstly the lack of security inside the Network Time Protocol (NTP), and secondly the sources and reliability of the time information. The first problem is solved by using the newer Network Time Security (NTS) protocol which adds TLS, and the second by investment in reliable and strategically placed time distribution servers, which is the basis of the Swedish national time initiative. Geoff attended the Netnod presentation and reflects on the complex and murky history of time, and the emergence of worldwide communities that coordinate both civil time (what the time of day is, in the world) and the nature of how time is measured (how a ‘second' is defined, for example). Geoff discusses historic and current attempts to standardise time measurements (such as UT1 and UTC) — with their inherent compromises — against Earth's revolutions and rotations around the Sun. These measurements have become increasingly critical to modern technology, such as GPS. Decisions made in the 1950s and 1970s to try and normalise the difference between monotonically increasing “UT1” time and the civil time system we know as “UTC” continue to plague the IT world, as civil time drifts (occasionally) by one second forwards (or very occasionally backwards) against UT1 -And with the emergence of more and more technology and especially satellite based systems like GPS, Bai-Dou, Galileo and GLONASS which provide time, the need to finalise the relative status of each time model becomes greater. This week's episode of Scrambling with Dylan Otto features Texas Tech University Golfer Ludvig Åberg. Ludvig dives into what it was like growing up in Sweden and how golf wasn't his main focus at a young age. While high school golf isn't as big in Sweden, he was able to turn to the Swedish National team which he joined and got to travel all around the world to play in tournaments. Once Ludvig made his way to the U.S. to play at Texas Tech, it was a whole new world for him. Since then, he hasn't turned back and has played some amazing golf not only in college events, but at high level amateur events. Ludvig touches on his win at the Jones Cup Invitational which earned him a spot to play with the best players in the world on the PGA Tour for a week. The #3 ranked amateur in the world looks to do all he can for his team heading into postseason and they'll definitely be a threat to others! Enjoy the show!
After she began powerlifting in 2013, Isabella quickly rose to international level. She made her debut on the Swedish National team in 2015, earning a bronze medal overall at the Classic World Championships and a European record in the squat. Today she is the current and seven-time IPF raw world record holder in the squat in the -72kg category, the European record holder with a 512.5kg total and 500+ Wilks, twofold European champion and a three time World Championship medalist. In 2017 she was voted IPF Female Lifter of the Year and in 2018 she became the lightest woman in the IPF to squat 200kg in sleeves. While Isabella was making her presence felt as a fierce competitor in the International Powerlifting Federation, she was also developing the foundation of her coaching skills. Over the years, she has coached lifters both online and one on one in a variety of formats, as well as handled competitors at both Swedish and US National Championships. For the past two years, she has held powerlifting seminars all over the world and lectured on Mindset and the psychological aspects of lifting, presenting at events such as the European Powerlifting Conference 2018 in Dublin and The Global Strength Summit 2019 in Dubai. Much of her coaching style is built upon the psychological education she gained from social work studies between 2015 and 2018 at Gothenburg University. Isabella believes that to effectively help clients reach their goals, motivation and mental challenges must be understood and taken into account with equal respect as the physical preparations. The unique experiences of a fast rise to international success, formal education, and practical client work, has given her a solid understanding for the mental rigors that go along with competition at any level. Her ability to listen to athletes, empathize, and challenge them when necessary is one of many major tools to helps lifters achieve their potential on the platform. Waving goodbye to her boss at 9:30 this would be the last time anyone saw the Swedish National alive. Before sunrise the next day, she would mysteriously vanish.Thirty-six hours later, Ylva was reported missing. Two days after that, police found her abandoned car less than a mile south of her office. There was no trace of Ylva, no sign of a struggle, nothing to suggest a crime had even been committed. Faced with a stunning lack of evidence, investigators almost immediately began hitting dead ends.Ylva's friends rallied, building websites and organizing a memorial dedication to keep her name alive. While detectives initially believed Ylva had to have been the victim of a random crime of opportunity, close friends began wondering if perhaps someone who claimed to want to find Ylva may in fact have been responsible for her disappearance in the first place.FB: https://www.facebook.com/TraceEvidencePod/IG: https://www.instagram.com/traceevidencepod/TW: https://twitter.com/TraceEvPodVisit https://www.trace-evidence.com for more information, case photos, contact information and more.Merch: https://traceevidence.threadless.com/ Music Courtesy of: "Lost Time" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

In this episode the boys sit down on the Swedish national day to discuss George Floyd, the BLM movement, and how to eradicate ethnic nationalism, racism and other extreme prejudices. George Floyd, who was murdered atrociously by police officers in the U.S.A has sparked a worldwide Black Lives Matter movement. The murder is indicative of the continuous police brutality with zero ramification, that black people has been facing in the U.S.A since its inception. The boys talk about the despicable actions of the president of U.S.A and discuss the need of the hour from the country's citizens. The movement has transcended the U.S borders and has raised questions here in Sweden as well. Although Sweden hasn't had such extreme examples but there are clear problems that exists in the society. The boys talk about Sweden's need to take accountability for its involvement in the transatlantic slave trade and not try to brush it away, if not reparation there should at-least be acknowledgement about their involvement specially when Sweden was one of the last country in Europe to abolish slavery. The systematic racism, the segregation, the inferior education funds, the unequal economic opportunities and the exclusion of non-dominant Swedes in cultural institutions all have to be addressed. Finally the boys talk about the need to educate ourselves, articulate better and eradicate such extreme behaviors within ourselves and our households. Hold people around us accountable and make our voices heard in the voting booth for change to take place. The boys end the episode with an optimistic view of the future where they know and believe that their generation can and will do better and that people today are more united through the pandemic and the BLM movement more than ever before. Lastly, although there might be issues, they are blessed and grateful to be in Sweden, a democratic country where they can voice their opinions freely and get their voices heard! PS: The cop standing and guarding was of Hmong descent and not of Mongolian descent.
Erik Esbjörnsson has been the Africa correspondent for the Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter since 2010. He spent six years in Nairobi before moving to Johannesburg in 2016. He had an inkling things were about to change in South Africa and Zimbabwe and wanted to be closer to the action. Over the last decade he has traveled all over the continent. His most recent reporting, before the travel ban came into effect, was from Sudan. A few months ago he tracked down his great-grandparents home in Goma while on assignment in the DRC. Of course we spent quite a bit of the podcast discussing a number of different aspects to the corona virus pandemic including the South African government's response, and the seeming breakdown in international solidarity that the pandemic has provoked.
