A new customs screening facility at Richmond International Airport to allow for direct international commercial passenger flights is expected to open in April. "It's good to see that the facility comes back online because you know, we'll be able to check all the boxes," Richmond International Airport Spokesperson Troy Bell said. The years-long revamp was required after airport officials were told in 2019 that the nearly 20-year-old customs screening area in Terminal B did not meet federal standards. More than half of the .2 million cost for the project came from federal funds. Click here to continue reading on WTVR.com,...Article LinkSupport the show

Good morning from Skift. It's Wednesday, March 22. Here's what you need to know about the business of travel today. Episode Notes Hotels are paying close attention to an increasingly influential set of travelers — Gen Z, or those born after 1996. This young generation is prompting hotels to rethink, and adopt, strategies that may even become permanent for guests across all their segments. So what steps have hotels been taking? Skift examines their marketing approaches in a deep dive by Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill and Contributors Sherry Sun and Carley Thornell. As members of Gen Z have reported greater loneliness than people in earlier generations, hotels could create spaces where travelers can connect with others, including locals. Johnny Quach, chief marketing officer at online travel agency Hostelworld, said it puts prospective guests in an online chat with other travelers staying in their hostel. In addition, one expert believes that many hotels will likely turn to year-round programming to attract members of specific subgroups, citing a local pickleball tournament as one possible activity. And with Gen Z travelers placing greater emphasis on enjoying experiences such as food tours during their trips, hotels could also devise creative ways to make stays more affordable. Yoshiharu Hoshino, CEO of Japan's Hoshino Resorts, said his company has added installment payments that enable travelers to pay for a trip over six months. He noted that option has been popular with members of Gen Z. Next, New York's LaGuardia Airport has long been derided by many travelers and locals. But its perception has drastically changed after what Contributor Ted Reed describes as a miraculous resurrection. Reed reports that LaGuardia's transformation included rebuilding Terminals B and C as well as five miles of roadway. Terminal B was recently recognized by one transport rating firm as the world's best new airport terminal. It's also the first terminal in North America to receive a five-star airport terminal rating. An executive who oversaw LaGuardia's reconstruction said it was the airport's mission to make it a place travelers would love after having been heavily criticized by then-Vice President Joe Biden in 2014. Finally, prominent TV shows can teach viewers valuable lessons. So Contributor Louise Felsher delves into what event planners can learn from the HBO smash hit The White Lotus, especially with more professionals resuming in-person gatherings. Felsher lists five lessons the show centered on the same-named fictional hotel chain can provide industry executives. She writes that event planners can avoid the menu fatigue that characters have experienced by selecting venues with multiple restaurant outlets. Felsher adds that savvy event planners prepare activities in advance for guests, citing an example of a father and son relegated to snorkeling in murky seawood due to their failure to plan ahead. Felsher also recommends event professionals spare no expense on medical resources, noting that each season of The White Lotus begins with a murder. She adds that preparing for attendees' safety should be routine. For more travel stories and deep dives into the latest trends, head to skift.com.
Fotograf: Elmar Vestner, Berlin Berlin based artist Sabine Hornig is known for her work combining sculpture, photography and installation to produce complex works allowing for new interpretations of conventional histories, memory, perspectives, and the lived environment. Her works explore the tension between surface plane and three-dimensional space, often treating transparent architectural mediums such as glass simultaneously as a surface, subject, and portal. At once rigorously formal and poetic, her works recontextualize familiar places and challenge individual views in the context of societal perspectives. By inverting perspectives and hierarchies, they make visible hidden contexts and communicate the interconnectedness of elements and conditions we usually separate. Her most notable works include La Guardia Vistas, LaGuardia Airport, New York; Shadows, Sydney International Towers, Barangaroo; Double Transparency, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam; Durchs Fenster, Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich; Room with Large Window, Berlinische Galerie, Berlin; The Second Room, Centro Cultural de Belem, Lisbon; Projects 78, Museum of Modern Art, New York. The Sunshine Flyer is Ready to Replace Disney's Magical ExpressEver since Disney announced it would be ending its popular Magical Express service in January 2022, Disney travelers have been wondering: So what now? This week, Transportation Management Services (TMS) announced The Sunshine Flyer as a new service that would transport guests from MCO to Walt Disney World resort hotels. The Sunshine Flyer offers a themed experience that is based on old-fashioned railway passenger cars and vintage stream train engines. A Design and Themed Experience that Walt Disney Would LoveThe service aims to take the stress of airport transportation for Disney guests in Orlando and help to kickstart the magic of a family vacation from the moment they board the bus at the airport. Some key facts about The Sunshine Flyer: The exteriors of the buses are designed to look like old-fashioned locomotives or passenger cars (and there are several different designs) Staff will be dressed as 1920s rail conductors and engineers The buses will have entertainment throughout the trip Ticket pre-sales are now available and service begins on February 1, 2022 There is also a charitable component to the launch of The Sunshine Flyer in honor of Walt Disney World's 50th anniversary: For the first 50 days of service, 50% of Sunshine Flyer ticket sales will be donated to Make-A-Wish Central & Northern Florida. Make-A-Wish children and their families will receive complimentary service from the Sunshine Flyer for their Disney wishes indefinitely The Sunshine Flyer's buses are late model, premium motorcoaches. From the classic railway-inspired bus designs to staff dressed as 1920s rail conductors and engineers, the motorcoaches effectively serve as time-machines, offering a glimpse into 1920s rail travel.According to Frank Sherman, CEO of TMS: “Everyone knows the magic of Disney once they're inside the park gates. But through The Sunshine Flyer, we're able to give guests the chance to start their vacation from the minute they step off the plane and turn what used to be a procedural drive into the beginning of an adventure to remember.” With 25 years of experience as a large events transportation company working with world-class events such as the FIFA World Cup, NBA Finals and various PGA TOUR Tournaments, TMS is primed to offer a streamlined and well-executed service through The Sunshine Flyer. What's inside The Sunshine Flyer buses? Where have you been? Piper was at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco Seattle and discussing the solutions hotel management implements to provide power outlets at the bedside. Gail was at a vintage hotel for a writing retreat. Question for listeners: Do you actually use the clock in a hotel room? Do you trust the clock alarm? Main Topic Challenge from a listener: "Iron Chef" Airport Bodega edition - you have 10 minutes and only an airport convenience store from which to select your entire meal. What do you select for dinner and how do you make it seem maximally palatable? Piper did this at Phoenix Airport, at a convenience store in Terminal B and got lucky, so she also recalled a significantly smaller airport with a limited selection convenience store. Gail goes for the smoothies and looks for SmartWater, then tries for hummus or string cheese and a salty snack of choice. Gadgets! Another listener question: when you travel, is there a thing you collect as a memento of your travels? Gail – silly, quirky shot glasses for her father, but mostly looks for consumables that are unique to the area for others and looks for jewelry or scarves for herself Piper – used to collect shot glasses or challenge coins from military bases, also always on the lookout for souvenirs for friends and family Shout out to fellow author, Myke Cole (https://mykecole.com/) Special thanks to Kelly for editing this episode! Thanks for listening. Travel smart. Injury updates from Mickey Callaway... the greatness of both Bud Harrelson and David Wright discussed. All done from a Boingo Wireless airport hotspot.
