Overview of television in Canada
POPULARITY
We chat about the increasing distrust in the Canadian Television media, the threats to someone trying to run for City Council, HOA outrage at generator use during an outage, the line up for the restaurant job in Brampton, the Canadian Gov sending millions to American Universities for climate change research. Was Alberta and the CCP involved in stifling oil and gas back in 2017? Singapore is indeed incinerating garbage for energy along with some other countries. What happened to the glass bottle industry? Another electric bus Boondoggle for Alberta! We have to touch on weather modification since we have been talking about that for 11 plus years.... The President of Shopify talks about the 600lb Beaver in the room, and Doug Ford says get off your A S S and get to work. Julian Assange accuses the See Eye Eh, Dr. Naomi Watts does a great summary of the Pfizer docs, the science is catching up to the conspiracy theorists, and what was going on with that mine in NC and who is the main shareholder? First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on April 24th 2022 A little over sixty years ago, a television series began that would, in many ways, come to encapsulate a particular view of nineteen sixties Britain that never really went away. It was so popular in certain countries that this particular image of Britain and the British seems to have stuck in their minds and shaped their perception of us ever since. Or perhaps one version of it has, anyway, because THE AVENGERS, the series PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI, is joining me to talk about today, went through several incarnations – and lapel carnations – as it progressed through most of the 1960s from its grey, grimy, and gritty origins in 1961, to its colourful, almost pop-art, last hurrah in 1969, and, in many ways, could be said to almost reflect that transformational decade on screen like almost no other television series of its time. Featuring PATRICK MACNEE as John Steed, a charmingly eloquent, and dapper, spy, who wears a bowler hat sometimes cast in stainless steel, and who carries a rolled umbrella which sometimes conceals a sword, who spends his professional career dealing with diabolical master minds intent upon some fiendish, eccentric, and freedom-threatening plot, usually with the assistance of a strong, plucky woman who seems far more adept at handling the rough stuff than he could ever hope to be. CATHY GALE, EMMA PEEL, and TARA KING were those fabulous, ground-breaking, and astonishingly independent women, and were played by three actors destined to become almost as iconic as the series itself: HONOR BLACKMAN, DIANA RIGG, and LINDA THORSEN. Although those other, grittier incarnations, also featured JULIA STEVENS as VENUS SMITH, JON ROLLASON as DR MARTIN KING, and the sublime and ridiculously talented IAN HENDRY who, as DR DAVID KEEL, was there right at the start, might be the person we have to thank for the series even existing at all, but who then chose to leave to pursue other career options, leaving JOHN STEED to step into the breech, and become the calm centre around which the series would carry on though such astonishing changes, not only in the lead actors, but from the technical point of view of switching from live studio videotape, to black and white, and later colour film, and a very successful penetration into the American market. In fact, if any show could be said to demonstrate the evolution of British television in the 1960s, I think THE AVENGERS may be the one that shows it off best, so much so that anyone who watched the 1961 version would barely recognise it as the same show if they tuned in again in 1969, with MOTHER and RHONNDA adding to the cast of eccentric regulars to battle each week with the very cream of 1960s acting talent. This other brainchild of Canadian Television supremo SYDNEY NEWMAN might not be your idea of what the Britain of the 1960s was really like, but it certainly is an image that has persisted since it first aired back in 1961 as a replacement for another series featuring its main star as a police surgeon, right through to its final episode in 1969, and the series was so internationally successful that it even got a fairly successful two year reimagining in the mid-1970s featuring PURDEY and GAMBIT as played by JOANNA LUMLEY and GARETH HUNT. PAUL is unashamedly a fan of the final year featuring TARA KING, so our conversation does inevitably spend a lot of time covering that era, but we do our best to give you a broader overview on our way there. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has sparked international condemnation and a race to levy sanctions and undo longstanding connections to the country. Responses have included demands that Russia Today, a television network backed by the Russian government, be removed from cable and satellite systems. Companies such as Bell, Rogers, Telus and Shaw have dropped the service, but the desire for a longer-term regulatory solution has brought the issue to the CRTC. Working with a strict two week deadline, last week the CRTC ruled that RT and RT France can no longer be distributed by Canadian television service providers. Monica Song is a partner with the law firm Dentons and one of Canada's leading telecom and broadcast lawyers. She joins the Law Bytes podcast to unpack the case before the Commission and assess the broader implications around due process and content regulation. The podcast can be downloaded here, accessed on YouTube, and is embedded below. Subscribe to the podcast via Apple Podcast, Google Play, Spotify or the RSS feed. Updates on the podcast on Twitter at @Lawbytespod. You may have heard about Cuban American protests in the streets of Miami, but what's happening in Cuba itself, where protest often carries stiff punishment from the communist dictatorship? It's hard to find accurate coverage given the information embargo imposed by the Castro regime. Ian Vasquez returned to the show to explain what the events of the July 11th uprising symbolize in a country whose people have lived in fear of persecution and torture for decades.Ian is Vice President for international studies at the Cato Institute and director of its Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity. He is a foreign policy correspondent for CNBC, NBC, C-SPAN, CNN, Telemundo, Canadian Television, NPR, and Voice of America. He is also the co-author of the Human Freedom Index – a subtopic for this Sunday's show – the editor of Global Fortune: The Stumble and Rise of World Capitalism, and the coeditor of Perpetuating Poverty: The World Bank, the IMF, and the Developing World.Vasquez finds that technology and the arts are creating new possibilities for exposing the miserable results of the Cuban “experiment” with socialism, which could only be sustained for so long by repression and intimidation. The rallying cries for freedom have grown louder and louder since Cubans got a taste of freedom from the outside world.
Adrienne Gold Davis was a fixture on Canadian Television for over 15 years, both as host of her own daily Fashion and Beauty program, and as a regular contributor on scores of others. An amazing journey led her to finding herself captivated by the spiritual wisdom of Judaism, and wanted to share that wisdom, much as she shared her passion for fashion! She spent the past 15 years as Senior Lecturer and Community Liaison for The Village Shul in Toronto, and lecturing around the world. Today, she is a Trip Leader for Momentum (formally the Jewish Women's Renaissance Project) and travels extensively speaking to group about the beauty of a more spiritual lifestyle. In this episode, we discuss Adrienne's journey and how she uses her past and her gifts to light the fire in so many people's hearts. And... on the subject of fire... My new book, "The Four Elements of an Empowered Life" is now available which focuses on discovering our inner spiritual elements of fire, wind, water, and earth! You can order it at: https://levx.org/four-elements/ or wherever books are sold!

In a world where everyone is fighting for attention on social media, mainstream media and online, how do you get your message or story out to the masses? In this episode, Coach Stone speaks with Fenella Bruce, a veteran television producer and writer, and Founder of FKB Media Solutions – a media consulting company that finds solutions for media problems. She shares great tips to help you get mainstream media coverage. Fennella has worked in the field of journalism for over 20 years and produced both Canada’s national morning shows – Your Morning and Canada AM. Fenella was also a senior writer or producer at numerous major market television stations, including CTV News Channel, CP24, CityTv, Toronto 1, and BET. For six years, she taught Media Theory at Centennial College and served on many critique juries, including the Canadian Screen Awards and The New York Festivals International TV Broadcasting Awards. She talks about leaping from journalism to production and how these are two intertwined with each other. She also talks about why there is nothing wrong with doing something else as long as you enjoy it, and you love the challenge. Fenella also mentions how black people don't have enough exposure in the media, especially in lead roles and positions behind the camera. If you have a dream or you are searching for your dream, listen to this episode. Here are a few more highlights from our conversation: [10:39] Never burn your bridges.[11:29] As a journalist, you genuinely have to be an expert on everything.[11:47] When you are writing, you have to be able to summarize things very quickly.[12:18] The writer gets to interact with everyone, the reporters, the camera person, the editors, and the assignment desk.[12:32] Most writers go into producing because once you know what everybody does and how it works, that is the first step to becoming a producer. [12:55] You have to be able to write if you are a good producer.[13:47] That is what people think about journalism, you are in front of the camera, or you are writing a story. But I did not realize so many other roles until I started volunteering in the newsroom that were open to me and that I should consider.[14:04] Producers are decision-makers. They are gatekeepers.[14:35] If you have a good team and a team that respects you, then it is not a difficult job.[20:51] You want to be in the space, so people see you, and when an opportunity comes up, they think about you. [21:10 ] A lot of people do not understand the power of mentorship. It is the power of getting in the same space as people who are already doing what you are doing. [21:57] You have got to keep your eye on the prize. [22:37] I am not afraid to speak to people. I am not afraid to put myself out there and take feedback. I want to learn. [32:01] If you decide to ease in into doing something else, you could always come back to doing what you were doing. [32:48] There is no shame in going back.[32:54] If I can do my job as well as I was doing for someone else and make these companies millions of dollars, then I can do that for me. [33:04] You have to be able to bet on yourself.[34:40] What you need to do is sit down, figure out how much you need to make for a month, set that as your goal, look at what you can do, and how you can get that goal, and then you do from there.[35:08] When you have that monthly goal, it does not seem as daunting to you. [35:41] Many of us give up on our dreams and goals because we do not think it is possible. But we have not sat down and mapped things out. [37:38] I tell people when things do not work. I am not going to act like everything is all great. [39:05] Sometimes, you can do something just for the love of it.[40:01] It was either do it now or don’t do it at all.[45:46] If you find the right people and train them properly, you can relieve a lot for you. [49:21] Auntie Jillian is Canada’s first Black Caribbean reality tv show. [51:57] A lot of shows or people, Candian personalities, are the same people. We do not see any fresh new faces.[53:43] When everybody looks the same, then you’re not going to get anything different. You’re going to get the same stuff, and that’s what you’re getting in Canadian Television.[1:00:47] It’s all about your work ethic and being open. [1:04:05] Make sure that your package is right.[1:04:42] Ensure that your website reflects what you’re doing, up to date, with good content, easy to navigate, and shows what you want to do.[1:10:00] You want to make sure you’re targeting the right person, and then you want to send what’s called the “pitch.” [1:10:19] You have to be careful because sometimes you’ll just get shrugged off to advertising, so there has to be something distinctive about you. [1:11:48] The easier you can make it for the reporter or the producer to visually see your story, the easier it will be for you to get your story in.[1:16:23] When you’re working from home, you can continuously work. And so, you have to learn to draw that line.[1:18:07] That’s part of grinding, where you can’t let things set you back. [1:19:55] Set an attitude of gratitude.[1:20:08] Gratitude is not just about saying thank you when somebody does something for you. It’s about saying thank you even when they haven’t done something for you.Links:Danny Stone WebsiteDanny Stone FacebookDanny Stone InstagramDanny Stone TwitterDanny Stone LinkedInFenella Bruce Social MediaFenella Bruce WebsiteFenella Bruce InstagramFenella Bruce TwitterFenella Bruce LinkedIn

Now with free shipping RV NEWS OF THE WEEK Senate passes bill that will send billions to national parks for much-needed maintenance, improvements Last week the U.S. Senate passed the "Great American Outdoors Act," a bill described as the most far-reaching conservation law in 40 years, that is expected to send millions of dollars from offshore oil drilling to pay for campgrounds, city parks, trails and more in all 50 states. The bill would provide $9.5 billion over five years to repair roads, restrooms, trails and campgrounds at the national parks. And it would guarantee $900 million a year to the Land and Water Conservation Fund. The bill now heads to the House, where quick passage is expected, President Donald Trump has said he will sign it into law. We will be following this as it looks like great news for America's national parks. Borders between U.S., Canada and Mexico to remain closed for another month to nonessential travel - at least Campers hoping to head to Canada or Mexico anytime soon learned last week that they will have to wait another month after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security extended the border closure to July 21 because of COVID-19. Borders are closed to nonessential travel, which is what camping is considered, and have been so for months. The order was supposed to lift in June but was extended last week as each nation seeks to limit the spread of the virus. We wrote about how seriously Canadians are taking this last week (click here) and urge you to follow the law, knowing that one day borders will open again. Just yesterday Fellow Traveler Rick Eles sent us a link to a big story on the Canadian Television network explaining how angry Canadians, spotting license pastes from the US at Canadian national parks like Banff, were calling in the Mounties! And they’ve been writing tickets – at least seven last week – that carry a $1,200 fine. Two women face jail time, fines and ban from Yellowstone for going off-trail and damaging thermal zone Two women who went off trail and damaged the delicate thermal zone at Yellowstone National Park were sentenced last week to jail time, ordered to pay fines, and banned from re-entering the park for two years. The women, from Philadelphia, damaged orange bacteria mats at Opal Pool in the Midway Geyser Basin when they illegally decided to walk off-trail. These mats are made of heat-loving bacteria that give the thermal beds their color and are a primary attraction to the area. To see some pictures of the beauty of Yellowstone, check out this oldie but goodie post we did here. Nine states still report closed or restricted campgrounds, the rest are now open

Walked by the Sherbourne area in Toronto today & came across an amazing sight. The original Kenny Vs Spenny House. This is where the legend of these two hilarious men begun. A landmark. Canada has incredible talent & those that are proud to be born in the country should represent more! Between the "Trailer Park Boys", "Kenny Vs Spenny", "Schitt's Creek" to even "Corner Gas", Canada has produced truly hilarious comedy that has stood the test of time. This one today was a simple thanks to Kenny Hotz & Spencer Rice for producing the funniest show in Canadian Television. Happy Canada Day to all of Y2J's fellow Canadians! And in honor of the occasion, the Canadian rock band crew (they're mostly from Winnipeg, you idiot) has reunited to talk all things Canadian television (and sing a TV theme song or ten)! Brent Fitz, Todd Kerns from Slash & Myles Kennedys band, the Conspirators, Red Solo Cup Geoff, and honorary Canadian, Brian Slagel from Metal Blade Records have plenty of memories (well, not Brian so much) about Degrassi, The Littlest Hobo, Bizarre, The Beachcombers, and City Vision (and how it wrecked Y2Js music credibility in highschool). And you know there's more than one great rock story included in this inquisition and it may or may not involve AC/DC, KISS and/or Judas Priest. O Canada! Our home and native land! O Canada! We stand on guard for thee (and your killer TV shows)!

The immediate occasion for this series was the CBC's 50th anniversary in 1986. Public broadcasting in Canada had actually begun four years before the date we were celebrating, with the creation of the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission (CRBC) by the Conservative government of R.B. Bennett in 1932. But this first attempt was criticized by the the Liberal opposition — for political bias— and by the Radio League, the popular organization that had lobbied for its creation — for poor programming. When Mackenzie King's Liberals replaced the Conservatives in 1936, they reorganized the public broadcaster as a crown corporation with a supposedly "arms length" relationship to the government of the day. They called their new creation the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation — the "corpse," as it was sometimes later jokingly known — and it made its first broadcast, from a transmitter in Watrous, Saskatchewan, on Nov. 2, 1936. The 50th anniversary gave me a welcome chance to review some of its history and to interview many of the pioneers who had built, first, the radio service, and then, after 1952, the country's first television network. The series began with an exploration of the origins of public broadcasting in Canada. Luckily, while living in Ottawa in 1978, I had recorded an interview with Graham Spry, one of the leaders of the campaign to establish a public broadcaster in the late 1920's and early 1930's. Graham died in 1983, and, having this interview was invaluable to me in constructing this first episode. The second show dealt with the so-called golden age of radio, when the CBC became Canada's first truly national cultural institution. The third was about the beginnings of television , the epochal Radio Canada strike of 1959, and the battle over Preview Commentary, a radio commentary which was cancelled, in 1959, as a result of political pressure from by the Diefenbaker government, and then reinstated under strong counter-pressure from its producers and the public. The fourth was entirely devoted to the story of This Hour Has Seven Days, the wildly popular current affairs programme that the CBC cancelled in 1966. The final episode concerned the regulation of public broadcasting in Canada, initially the task of the CBC itself, but, after the Conservative government of John Diefenbaker reformed the CBC and allowed private television broadcasting in 1958, the job of the Board of Broadcast Governors (BBG), and then, from 1968 to the present, Canadian Television and Radio Commission (CRTC). This last programme was twice partially reconstructed to create a more up-to-day conclusion when the series was re-broadcast in 1996, for the 60th anniversary, and again in 2006, for the 70th, but here I have included the original 1986 ending. Some of the material was drawn from the archives, where Ken Puley, as always, was an invaluable help, but happily, in 1986, a lot of the people who built the CBC were still alive and willing to reminisce with me. Here is a list of those I was able to interview:#1 - Harry Boyle, Graham Spry, Frank Peers, Michael Nolan, Orville Shugg, and James Finlay#2 - Neil Morrison, Lister Sinclair, Harry Boyle, Davidson Dunton, Orville Shugg, Marjorie McEnaney, Helen Carscallen, Alan Thomas, Frank Peers, Bernard Trotter, and Robert Fulford#3 - Fernand Quirion, Jean Louis Roux, Alphonse Ouimet, Robert Fulford, Lister Sinclair, Barbara Fairbairn, Frank Peers, and Gordon Cullingham#4 - Hugh Gauntlett, Patrick Watson, Alphonse Ouimet, Laurier Lapierre, Douglas Leiterman, Reeves Haggan, Warner Troyer, Helen Carscallen, Eric Koch, Roy Faibish, and Peter Campbell#5 Harry Boyle, Graham Spry, Frank Peers, Davidson Dunton, Alphonse Ouimet, Robert Fulford, Eugene Forsey, Herschel Hardin, Laurent Picard, Hugh Gauntlett, and Al Johnson

Welcome to Episode one hundred and eleven, the first podcast of 2013! As you may recall, Jeff Lester and Graeme McMillan have several dozen questions hanging over heads left by listeners last year. How many do we actually manage to answer in this two hour podcast? Write the number down on a piece of paper before listening and then check it at the end. You will be astounded! As always you can find our show notes over at Savage Critic Dot com, and considering we do not get around to discussing comics until the thirty-eight minute mark, you may want to check the show notes to make sure we talk about what you want to hear when you want to hear it! Because topics today include the Triumvirate of Cocoa: Cocoa Puffs, Cocoa Krispies, and Cocoa Pebbles; the first season of American Horror Story; the TV adaptation of Tommy and Tuppence; Misfits; Canadian Television; Amazing Spider-Man #700; Final Crisis; Batman and the Outsiders Annual #1; Sachie-Chan Good by Akira Toriyama and Masakazu Katsura; Flash #15 Prophet #32, and--as if we could avoid it--much, much more. As always, we hope you enjoy, thank you for listening…and Happy New Year!
