It Ends With Us is a solid movie. It has some absolutely wonderful line deliveries and performances along with pretty solid casting choices. You may have to sit through a bit of, what some would call, filler to get to the better stuff unfortunately. On the 16th day of Pitts-mas, peepaw gave to me A River Runs Through It Hey, look, it's charming, young Pitt in a real role that shows you the superstar he'll become. He likes fishing. He's so good at fishing, his older brother says he's an artist. At fishing. It's a movie about fishing. And family. And Robert Redford directed and narrates it. Is this thing good? Is it boring, but also satisfying? What are your thoughts on Craig Sheffer? You member that guy? Jason does, cause he's a Nightbreed boy. Also, Tom Skerrit. Book Vs. Movie: Smoke SignalsThe Sherman Alexie Short Story Vs. the 1998 Movie In this episode, the Margos delve into the acclaimed indie film Smoke Signals, released in 1998. This film was based on a series of short stories by Sherman Alexie in 1993, titled The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. The story follows two young men, Victor Joseph and Tom Builds-the-Fire, who grew up on a Spokane Indian Reservation. It explores the interconnectedness of their families, the perception of Native Americans in mainstream media, and the truth behind Tom's father's death. Smoke Signals was well-received by critics and audiences alike and was showcased at various film festivals such as the Sundance Film Festival, the Gotham Awards, and the Independent Spirit Awards. In 2018, it was even added to the National Film Registry. Chris Eyre directed the movie, which was based on Alexie's screenplay. We'll also be discussing our personal preferences between the two. In this episode, Mike and Rich bookend the show with two films with the same title! We kick off with BLACK SITE, a film we'd been looking forward to seeing ever since the buzz from its US release. Does it stand up to expectations? Next is DAY SHIFT, the feature directorial debut of renowned fight choreographer, J J Perry, and stars Jamie Foxx as a blue-collar vampire hunter. This film is a Netflix original, which have been a bit hit-and-miss, so how does this stand up? EAST OF THE MOUNTAINS finds Tom Skerrit and his dog un against the elements... THE CAPTIVE finds a trafficking survivor re-tormented by her original captor, SPECIAL DELIVERY is a Korean action movie which are usually right up my alley but after being burned by Carter in the last episode, will this renew my faith in the genre? Our Short Shot is the excellent animated film, THE LEGEND OF PIPI - click on the link for some great dark humour! Finally, our DTV Throwback is another film called BLACK SITE - this one is a British film, directed by Tom Paton. This is available on the ROKU channel, or to rent from other streaming services. Follow the Short Shots TWITTER page, where we will be linking to a short film every day! Don't forget to also check out our main show, the DTV DIGEST on TWITTER and FACEBOOK!

UNLOCKED: Podcaster, writer, and Twitter's Most Wanted Man™ Aaron Thorpe joined us back in April to discuss Robert Zemeckis's 1997 science fiction masterpiece 'Contact' starring Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey. It's a thrilling, expansive film that explores Big Questions about science and faith while maintaining a profoundly moving sense of wonder throughout. We discuss Contact's origins as both film treatement and eventual novel by the brilliant Carl Sagan and his wife Ann Druyan, explore the film's ideological opposition to the neoliberal hegemony of the mid-90s, and make a case for the necessity of a post-scarcity (perhaps even spiritual) perspective to the success of a humanist political project. We're jetting towards the celebration of our nation's independence this week on Fabulous Film and Friends we've decided to discuss and dissect the film that started it all, 1986's Top Gun starring Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, Meg Ryan, Val Kilmer, Tom Skerrit, Rick Rossovich, James Tolkan, John Stockwell and Tim Robbins. I'm your host Gino Caputi and joining me this week are series regulars Roseanne Caputi, Dr. David Johnson DMD and everybody's favorite newshound Mark Nicholas Workhoven. And now the synopsis. Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is a hotshot Navy Pilot whose devil may care attitude and boundary pushing flying style earns him a spot at The Naval Fighter Weapons School known as Top Gun. Along with his best friend Lt. JG Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, the pair cavort around the Naval school going to bars, playing volleyball, taking a lot of showers and proving what cocky bastards they are to both rival LT. Tom “Iceman” Kazansky and civilian flight instructor Charlotte “callsign Charlie” Blackwood. After prerequisite flirting, Maverick and Charlie become romantically involved and all is well until one day, while flying in a training exercise, Maverick's plane gets caught in Iceman's Jet wash, the engines fail, the jet goes into a flat spin and Goose is killed while ejecting the aircraft. Maverick's confidence is shot and he contemplates quitting the program but his commanding officer Mike “Viper” Metcalf convinces him to stay. Then on graduation day Maverick and all the top gun grads are called into a mission to fight what looks to be the Russians in a head to head aerial dogfight over the Indian Ocean and against all odds, Maverick saves the day and shoots all the enemy aircraft down. Maverick and Iceman land their planes safely having put aside their rivalry, and finally when Maverick goes home, Charlie waits for him at the bar where they met. Okay, let's address the elephant in the room: What's the deal with all the sweat and shower scenes? And overly made up Kelly McGillis? What's the deal with this movie? Find out!
Top Gun: Maverick is...AMAZING. This is return to form, for even just a moment, to big budget Hollywood that is not only beautiful but also a wonderfully crafted story with emotional depth and characters that are more than just typed words on a page. Before Top Gun: Maverick jets onto movie screens this weekend after a two-year delay, we're rewatching the original blockbuster that earned Tom Cruise his action hero wings. Co-starring Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, Val Kilmer, and Tom Skerrit, it was the highest-grossing movie of 1986 and drove a 40% increase in sales of Bomber jackets and Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses after its release. Now we're taking a ride into the DANGER ZONE to talk Top Gun - but does it still take our breath away, or is it just a glorified recruiting ad for flight school? It’s the 35th Anniversary of ‘Top Gun’ and the guys get fired up and Reel It Back! The guys start by discussing Tom Cruise and how he was the perfect actor to play Maverick and how this launched an epic run of movies that vaulted him into the A-List. Joe discusses how the movie did not live up to what he remembers but they all discuss the amazing music that helped carry this movie into a classic. The guys talk Tom Skerrit’s mustache, Anthony Edwards performance and also get into a little singing from Paul. The epic volleyball scene is broken down and they talk about the ill fitted love scene between Maverick and Charlie. It’s a great debate and split between all 3 guys on MVP and they dig deep on who was at fault for Goose’s death. TELL MY LITTLE GIRL I LOVE HER!* Digital Survivalists* The Cone of Shame* Cultural Touchstones* Law & Order: SVUThere are those that can survive in the woods for 21 days naked but in the 21st century they are nothing compared to those hardened souls who can survive 22 days without facebook. That's right, Digital Survivalists. They're writing their own drivers, and hosting their own DNS servers. VPNs? There's nothing virtual about it they're building their own internet with Black Jack and Hookers. You're beloved pet has just had an operation but you need to ensure they wont scratch at the entry site. Enter the cone of shame, a piece of technology so archaic not only does it not work, we're guilted into taking it off by children's movies. Thanks Hollywood. Here's the thing though, there have been advances in Cone technology only no vet will give it to you because for whatever reason the other options cost more.MASH, Seinfeld, Friends, Titanic, the first season of Lost, Survivor, all cultural touchstones everyone was watching and talking about it the next day at work, but what about today? In the modern age of streaming there is something new everyday and something is being made that only you will watch. Gone are the days of "Must See TV" and with it the feeling of community around your new favorite show, because next month that will be old news.Law & Order, in 1990 a small procedural crime drama launched and it has been on the air in one form or another for 29 years. The biggest spin off Law & Order: SVU has spun off of the rails. It's truly a case of what will happen next. An episode starts and Tom Skerrit is suspected of killing a child. Next thing you know Dean Stockton is leading a government conspiracy to spike the water with LSD. What comes next? You'll never see it coming. All that plus Tab discusses poor amazon choices, voicemails, and you won't believe what mythical creature is believed to be real! R Kelly is a piece of human garbage. There is no doubt about it. Tune in as we lay into this waste of space after watching "Surviving R Kelly" on #hulu . Danny draws comparisons between R Kelly and Jerry Sandusky that make you go hmmm? We sprinkle in a little Harvey Weinstein and have ourselves a heaping helping of absolute scumbaggery. Then we dive deep into the vaults of wikipedia to find out what 90s stars Andrew McCarthy and Tom Skerrit are up to these days. Buckle up.
It's our second trip back to school with two more movies we missed in the 1980s (see last year's Breakfast Club/Return to Horror High to compare) -- first we're going to an all-ages camp, SPACECAMP that is, and then we're headed to rush week at college with NIGHT OF THE CREEPS. The former (which neither Taylor boy has seen) stars Lea Thompson, Kate Capshaw, Tate Donovan, Tom Skerrit and little Joaquin ("Leaf") Phoenix! The latter (which neither Josh nor Rob have seen) features FFP mainstay and possible mascot, a drunk Tom Atkins! Join us, won't you? We're on a roll with Stephen King films after our CHRISTINE episode, so the Damn Dirty Geeks make a U-turn back into Uncle Ira's Basement for this mini-podcast about David Cronenberg's film adaptation of Stephen King's THE DEAD ZONE. In this episode, Frank, Trish and Scott focus their psychic skills on Christopher Walken's memorable performance in this tense Cronenberg thriller which arguably is the best feature adaptation of a King novel yet. One of King's best novels in its own right, this suspenseful tale of lost love and a terrible gift to see future events forces Johnny Smith to choose between his own destruction or the world's apocalyptic catastrophe. Brought alive on the screen by a talented supporting cast including Herbert Lom, Brooke Adams, Tom Skerrit and Martin Sheen, the DDG argue that THE DEAD ZONE remains a riveting highlight in Walken's career and another uniquely chilling triumph in Cronenberg's career. Listen along to flash back to this gripping film and remember how King and Cronenberg reached out to chill your blood in 1983.
A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE! Jon calls in from his mother's dining room in Virginia so we can have a show*. Robert decides that Eagleheart's Paradise Rising, Episode 6 (or 17), "Joe" is probably his favorite and then doesn't seem to be able to explain why. Note taking is discussed. Brian Setzer is dissed. Tom Skerrit is recalled. Frank Stallone is mentioned. An unsuccessful contest is repeated. Listen to this one while wrapping that Eagleheart Season One DVD you bought for your Dad. Merry Christmas to all who like that stuff and have a great week to those who don't. Rat-a-tat-tat, boom-boom, Baby! *thanks to those who helped.
