Synopsis On today's date in 2019 a new documentary film entitled Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah examining her powerful works and her career as a Black American artist.Appropriately enough, the musical score for that documentary was crafted by another talented Black American woman, namely Kathryn Bostic, an accomplished composer of film, TV, theatrical, and concert hall scores.Kathryn Bostic is a recipient of many fellowships and awards including several from the Sundance Festival.  Kathryn served the Vice President of the Alliance for Women Film Composers, is a member of the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 2016 she became the first female African American score composer in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.“My parents loved music and my mother was a classical pianist and teacher,” says Bostic “Listening to the wide range of music while growing up brought me to a phenomenal treasure trove of black composers including William Grant Still, Ulysses Kay, George Walker, Margaret Bonds, Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, Isaac Hayes … I mean I could go on and on. They are all such extraordinary innovators of rich textures and amazing emotional depth. Definitely big influences for me.” Music Played in Today's Program Kathryn Bostic: Main Title, from "Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am" Lakeshore Records 35495 (original soundtrack album)

New month greetings Glocal Citizens! This week's episode is all about roots and rooting. I've known my guest for more than half my life going back to our roots in Denver, Colorado. From our Angelic days walking the halls of East High High School to living in the lanes in and around Accra, Hasira Soul Ashemu and I have been able to stay connected thanks to social media and a spirit of inspiring and ushering change for marginalized people. Hasira, a community organizer, writer and entrepreneur, is the founder and chief visionary officer for Righteous Rage Institute. This week's Empire Podcast is another live show in which Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara and token English bloke, the award-winning James Dyer, rock up for the Virgin Media Dublin International Film 2020. In front of a packed crowd, they discuss the Coronavirus' impact upon the movie industry, in the wake of No Time To Die being pushed back; additional movie news including the unveiling of the Batmobile; review Onward, Military Wives, Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, and The Photograph; and answer audience questions. Oh, and in a bit that totally works on an audio-only podcast, Chris's opening remarks are translated into Irish. It's also a guestapalooza, with Rialto's twin Toms, Glynn-Carney and Vaughan-Lawlor, joined on stage by Calm With Horses' Niamh Algar and Nick Rowland. And then, in a surprise for the audience, Game Of Thrones star, and local legend, Liam Cunningham shows up for a brief chat. And, in a surprise for our intrepid pod-team, he brings an unannounced guest, Syrian refugee-turned-actor Hassam Ahlrak, with him. Find out more about Hassam's incredible story on the episode. Oh. And Chris would like to apologise to all Irish people for mispronouncing the 'Brian' in 'Brian Gleeson'. Chris pronounces it on the show as 'Brian', when we've since been told that it's actually 'Brian'. Enjoy.

We remember the great Toni Morrison through archival interviews with her, clips from the film, Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am (still showing in Albany and Marin), and reflections by writers Aya de Leon, Carolina de Robertis and Nayomi Munaweera, as well as a discussion between Women's Magazine's Jovelyn Richards and filmmaker Timothy Greenfield Sanders. Then we go to another iconic writer in a very different genre. Sara Paretsky, author of the best-selling V.I. Warshawski detective novels, joins us for a discussion about sexism in publishing, crime fiction in the service of social justice, and the founding of the organization Sisters in Crime. Ed's note: On learning that she would be included in a show featuring Toni Morrison, Sara Paretsky said she was overwhelmed. We asked for a comment on Morrison's influence, and she replied: “Morrison's extraordinary genius as a writer of fiction and user of language is something I admire but can't hope to emulate. What I do hope to emulate is her courage, her forthrightness, in speech and writing. One thing that has stuck with me all week is a comment by Rachel Ghansah on Morrison's legacy in her life: ‘We need to speak with clarity and not let anyone sanitize our voices and our thoughts, but also have the freedom to say this space right here is mine. And this writing is where I'm free, and no one can tell me what to be.'” The post August 12, 2019: Groundbreaking Writers Toni Morrison and Sara Paretsky appeared first on KPFA.

courtesy: Haiti Action Committee We talk about how women are coping with an escalation of government-sponsored violence in Haiti, and a political crisis we hear little about but which has been going on for over a year. Judith Mirkinson, president of the SF Bay Chapter of the National Lawyers' Guild and the Comfort Women Justice Coalition and Leslie Mullin, long-time member of the Haiti Action Committee, talk about what they learned on recent trips to Haiti. Haitians have been in the streets for almost a year protesting government theft of millions of dollars. In November, paramilitaries associated with the Haitian army and police massacred dozens of civilians in the neighborhood of LaSaline, as UN troops did nothing to protect the people. We'll also speak with the director of the film, Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, which is playing now at Landmark theaters in San Francisco and Oakland. Director Timothy Greenfield-Sanders has been friends with Morrison for over 35 years, and has created an intimate portrait of one of the most important writers of the last fifty years. It's a rare glimpse into the life of a very private author. The post Womens Magazine – July 1, 2019 appeared first on KPFA.

TONI MORRISON: THE PIECES I AM offers an artful and intimate meditation on the life and works of the acclaimed novelist. From her childhood in the steel town of Lorain, Ohio to ‘70s-era book tours with Muhammad Ali, from the front lines with Angela Davis to her own riverfront writing room, Toni Morrison leads an assembly of her peers, critics and colleagues on an exploration of race, America, history and the human condition as seen through the prism of her own literature. Woven together with a rich collection of art, history, literature and personality, the film includes discussions about her many critically acclaimed works, including novels “The Bluest Eye,” “Sula” and “Song of Solomon,” her role as an editor of iconic African-American literature and her time teaching at Princeton University. In addition to Ms. Morrison, the film features interviews with Hilton Als, Angela Davis, Fran Lebowitz, Walter Mosley, Sonia Sanchez and Oprah Winfrey, who turned Morrison’s novel “Beloved” into a feature film. Using Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ elegant portrait-style interviews, Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am includes original music by Kathryn Bostic, a specially created opening sequence by artist Mickalene Thomas, and evocative works by other contemporary African-American artists including Kara Walker, Rashid Johnson and Kerry James Marshall. Director Timothy Greenfield-Sanders joins us for a conversation on gaining the trust and confidence of a literary icon.
