As spring arrives in full force across the temperate regions of the northern hemisphere, I invite you to take a few minutes to immerse yourself in the sounds and happenings of a spring black cottonwood (Populus balsamifera) forest along the Clark Fork River near Missoula, Montana, USA. This is part two in a three-part series following a pair of nesting pileated woodpeckers (Dryocopus pileatus). In this episode, I track them from the end of cavity excavation in late April through the nestling stage in mid-June.This story features wildlife photographers Lea Frye (https://leaf-images.com/) and Rachel Ritacco (https://www.ritaccophotography.com/), who accompanied me on one of my visits to the pileated woodpecker nest. As usual, the podcast includes an abundance of audio I recorded in the field, including various cuts of pileated woodpeckers as well as sounds of American robin (Turdus migratorius), tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor), song sparrow (Melospiza melodia), red-naped sapsucker (Sphyrapicus nuchalis), northern waterthrush (Parkesia noveboracensis), northern house wren (Troglodytes aedon), wind in the cottonwoods, and May rain.As always, I depend on the support of my listeners to continue doing this work. Immerse yourself in a quiet forest of western redcedar on a morning in late May, as varied thrushes (Ixoreus naevius) and Townsend's warblers (Setophaga townsendi) sing and a Pacific wren (Troglodytes pacificus) builds a well-hidden nest. This contemplative story invites you to pause in the stillness, to listen in the spaces between sounds. Through the song of the Pacific wren, it also connects with September 2023's episode, Getting to know Washington's spiders. I recorded birdsong for this story, including the species already mentioned as well as western tanager (Piranga ludoviciana), in the Ross Creek Cedars of northwestern Montana in May of 2024. To accompany this podcast, I've also created a 10-hour track of varied thrush and Townsend's warbler song for sleep and relaxation. Migratory birds connect us. I've been in the state of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico, for almost two months now. This is a story of exchange, of our interconnected planet, and of the birds that connect our lands, from Montana to Oaxaca. But in telling it I couldn't ignore the difficult themes of gentrification: that although the birds don't recognize the wall between our countries, it still greatly influences our human lives. I hope that this story stimulates interesting thoughts, conversations, and exchanges! This podcast features the voices of many birds: yellow-rumped warblers (Setophaga coronata) singing and calling from Montana, and calling from their wintering grounds in Oaxaca; and a recording from Las Canteras Park, Oaxaca de Juárez that includes social flycatcher (Myiozetetes similis), Bewick's wren (Thryomanes bewickii), yellow-rumped warbler, house finch (Haemorhous mexicanus), Inca dove (Columbina inca), white-winged dove (Zenaida asiatica), and curve-billed thrasher (Toxostoma curvirostre). What is it about some songs that make them stick in your head like epoxy? This one isn't even really a song, it's just a riff (I guess in this it shares that distinction with an earlier SUNNY SONGS episode, Archie Bell's “Tighten Up”),  and, it's also got that spoken shout out: “Hey Leroy! Your mama… she callin' you, man!” Then the cackling laughter, and the bursting into a driving, urgent Latin Soul chant “Go to your mama”, (led by a skittering, syncopated cowbell). It's just infectious wonderfulness, which culminates in Jimmy's signature sax, bringing us on home as the record fades out. As kids, we would tease each other with the “Leroy” line, and have a fine time, running across streets and yards, madly dashing after each other: “Hey, Leroy! Your mama… She MAD, man!” 56 years later, while compiling a list of songs that make me feel instantly good, this one came scampering back, unbidden, from deep down the recesses of my befuddled brain to make the roster. Jimmy Castor started off his career in the doo-wop group, FRANKIE LYMON AND THE TEENAGERS.  The difference was that Jimmy was not simply a harmonizer, he was a writer, a self-generating machine of catchy content, so, inevitably, he stepped up to the front of his own outfit, The Jimmy Castor Bunch, and released a raft of memorable material to the world - perhaps most notably “Troglodyte”, a national Funk hit in the 70s, making it to number 6 in the charts. You might remember its chant: “Gotta Get a Woman, Gotta Get a woman…” I don't know what it is about this record, but could it be -  (and, this might be a stretch) - that there is a little bit of “Leroy” in all of us: we all have mothers, and we all go through that period when were pushing away, but still a bit tied to the apron strings? Well… no need to overthink it. It's just a riff, after all.

Mountain gorillas are descendants of ancestral monkeys and apes found in Africa and Arabia during the start of the Oligocene epoch (34–24 million years ago). The fossil record provides evidence of the hominoid primates (apes) found in east Africa approximately 22–32 million years ago. The fossil record of the area where mountain gorillas live is particularly poor and so its evolutionary history is not clear.[5]It was about 8.8 to 12 million years ago that the group of primates who were to evolve into gorillas split from their common ancestor with humans and chimps; this is when the genus Gorilla emerged. Mountain gorillas have been isolated from eastern lowland gorillas for approximately 10,000 years and these two taxa separated from their western counterparts approximately 1.2 to 3 million years ago.[6] The genus was first referenced as Troglodytes in 1847, but renamed to Gorilla in 1852. It was not until 1967 that the taxonomist Colin Groves proposed that all gorillas be regarded as one species (Gorilla gorilla) with three subspecies Gorilla gorilla gorilla (western lowland gorilla), Gorilla gorilla graueri (lowland gorillas found west of the Virungas) and Gorilla gorilla beringei (mountain gorillas, including Gorilla beringei, found in the Virungas and Bwindi). In 2003, after a review, they were divided into two species (Gorilla gorilla and Gorilla beringei) by The World Conservation Union (IUCN).[5] There is now agreement that there are two species, each with two subspecies.[7]Be sure to use code: HERDSODA at drinkolipop.com and save 15% on all orders!

Howdy pardners and pardnettes, it's time to join the rodeo and review Bone Tomahawk. It's going to be a rootin tootin good time. https://youtu.be/VHDyu1o2nAg Artwork by Dustin Goebel. Follow @dgoebel00 on instagram. Synopsis In the sleepy old west town of Bright Hope, it is anything but, as the town doctor is kidnapped by a band of indigenous cave dwellers that even the (other?) Native Americans think are savages. Kurt Russel's Sherriff Hunt leads a band of men on a rescue mission made up of his elderly assistant deputy played by Richard Jenkins, the arrogant Gunslinger Brooder played by Mathew Fox, and The doctor's lame husband played by Patrick Wilson. Actually lame, his leg is broke. He's actually a pretty cool dude. They make their way through the frontier to find the territory of the Troglodytes, and find out that the stories of their savagery are if anything underselling it.  https://youtu.be/0ZbwtHi-KSE Review of Bone Tomahawk This film is one of a few in the genre of Western Horror, and few if any reach the quality of this film.  The film is effective in it's simplicity. It's a rescue mission ala The Searchers. You have the set of archetypal characters that are thrown together by situation and duty, and several dilemmas and power struggles along the journey to find the location of the savages. Bone Tomahawk Poster When they get to the Troglodyte Territory, the tone takes a sharp turn into straight up torture porn horror.  The mission goes from the guys in white hats will surely win, to oh no… oh nonono.  While the first half of the movie drags a little, I think it's necessary to set up the characters and give contrast to the horror at the end of the film. One scene in particular stands out so much that it's basically become a meme as “that scene” in Bone Tomahawk. For good reason. It will stick with you, and if you are a man, you will especially feels something. Score 8/10 Bone Tomahawk Add it to your collection or rent it now.Click here to buy
