shutterstock The “Fourth Industrial Revolution” is a term coined in 2016 by German economist Klaus Schwab. It's used to describe the technology revolution that the world is going through. But there is growing criticism, particularly in the global south, of how it's framed. Many are questioning whether it should be considered a revolution at all. The Fourth Industrial Revolution, according to one view, is a very simplistic narrative that advances a distinct political agenda. It is a kind of exploitation that is being sold as progress. The narrative is being advanced to achieve a specific economic outcome – at the expense of many people in the global south. Many innovations are happening in the digital technological space. But do they reorganise production and social relations, or do they just entrench past forms of inequality? Consider the case of the ride-hailing app Uber. It may sound like enticing work for drivers, but there's more to it. Drivers may face bad working conditions, penalties and other challenges without the security of human resources behind them. In this episode of Pasha, Ruth Castel-Branco, manager of the Future of Work(ers) research project at the University of the Witwatersrand, joins Nanjala Nyabola, a storyteller and political analyst, in taking us through the seductive idea of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

We have all had to manage the battery life on our cell phone. The first step is usually to review all of the apps/browsers we have working in the background and close out the ones we are no longer using, as to not waste the battery life on something worthless. When it comes down to that last bar, we save it for the most critical usage....that one emergency phone call, or the text to let our family know we landed on our plane, or even to make sure we can use the Uber App to get a ride to the hotel. Either way, we know how our energy will need to be spent when crunch time arrives. The energy we carry into each day is no different than a battery. There will be countless interactions, decisions, and experiences daily that pop up just like apps on our phone. Some we will close out after using,. some we will forget about and let run in the background, using up our limited energy. Some bringing us positive energy in return, some draining our battery as if we are roaming looking for a signal. It's a good practice to identify where your battery power is being allocated, and if it isn't delivering the longevity you hoped for, there may be some apps running that you can make the choice to close out and preserve your battery life for those vital moments, and necessary actions.

Pull up the Uber App. Want Groceries? No problem! There are many apps for convenience these days and if you want to hire a Dog Walker/Sitter, well there's an app for that too. Couldn't be easier, right?!? But convenience is not without its costs. Just look at how many times Uber has been in the news over driver's acting inappropriately. No surprise, there are stories hitting the news with similar implications when dealing with dog sitters and walkers. This begs the question: What is the price of convenience? In this bonus #mobilitymarch episode of the Smart Community Podcast, Zoe has a fascinating chat with Natalie Malligan, the Head of Cities for Australia and New Zealand at Uber. This is a short but jam packed episode, and it's also a perfect follow up to our previous episode featuring Sampo Hietanen, all about Mobility as a Service, so if you haven't listened to that episode yet, I'd recommend you go back and listen to it before this one, as Zoe and Natalie do talk about MaaS a bit here so Sampo's episode will be useful for a bit more context in that regard. In this episode, Natalie shares a bit about how Uber sees the future of transport and some of their projects worldwide, including taking part in the Transport NSW Mobility as a Service Challenge, and integrating the public transport services into the Uber App in the City of Denver in the US. Zoe and Natalie discuss how Australian consumers and governments are embracing Smart concepts, and how this has changed over time, as well as why Uber has been so successful in become a household name. Natalie explains how Uber views their role in the transport sector, and some of their other projects like up-coming on-demand aircraft service Uber Elevate and the open data platform Movement. Natalie and Zoe finish their conversation on how Uber has changed their approach over the years, and the emerging trends of micro-mobility such as e-bikes and e-scooters. As always, we hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we enjoyed making it.Find the full show notes at: www.mysmart.communityConnect with Natalie via LinkedInConnect with me via email: hello@mysmart.communityConnect via LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook @smartcommpod

This article focuses on Seattle, but just last year's numbers alone are amazing. https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/transportation/uber-lyft-boosted-car-travel-by-94-million-miles-in-seattle-last-year-study-says/ Article about safety while using the rideshare apps for riders. Pretty good article that brings up some very valid points but also some terrible ones. Should read them allowed and discuss as a group. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/travel/fl-reg-tips-to-stay-safe-riding-uber-lift-rides-20180815-story.html DFW airport changes coming starting september 8th. Their solution is to have airport employees shoo any drivers away if they are waiting curbside for more than 1 minute? Thoughts? https://www.star-telegram.com/news/business/aviation/article216453150.html Stats about how risk of crashing with the gig economy is increasing https://www.theguardian.com/business/2018/aug/20/gig-economy-demands-raise-uber-and-amazon-drivers-risk-of-crashing Tip Time: Sometimes it pays off to wait for the riders. Not all the time, but when the riders have been very good about communicating I highly suggest waiting for them. Chances are if they say they are going to take good care of you they will. Prime example was Justin's trip this past weekend. Jason and I were convincing him to stay and wait it out and he did not want to. Jason actually turned down this trip and Justin took it. Questions from our facebook groups Q: I was under the impression that uber/lyft pays for our tolls? Now i have an $185.25 ticket that i need to pay. Original toll was $12.75 amount of penalty is $172.50. A: They reimburse you for your tolls if you look at the ride receipt. If you miss paying a toll it is on the driver to go back and pay it. If you do not pay it or pay the penalties they will suspend your driver's license Q: So now that we're using the new uber driver app is there no way to cancel a ride and get paid for a no show? When i arrive at my destination i can see the timer for the rider is notified but then after that expires it goes into charging rider but the timer never changes its always at 0 minutes. At one point i’d literally have waited over 8 minutes and never received the option to cancel the ride as a no show. A: Seems like this has been a pretty common glitch in the new app. The option is there but sometimes does not work. At that point i would just cancel the ride and take the hit after 5 minutes. Q: Did uber eats reduce the pick up fee for drivers? I have been doing uber eats since december when they first rolled it out here in Grand Rapids and the pick up fee has always been $1.98, but today both of my food deliveries were only $1.08 pick up fee. A: Yes they lowered the delivery on both sides for the customer and for the driver. Have to think they lowered it because of all the new platforms starting in Grand Rapids. Q: Did you know that Lyft has a maximum fare? Once you reach that maximum you will not be paid to drive any farther. A: To check what the maximum rate is in your market go to dashboard on the driver app then click on rate card. In Grand Rapids maximum for regular lyft is $300. It’s the same for lyft xl also. Lyft lux is $375 maximum.

Send email feedback: annie@joinusinfrance.com Follow the show on Facebook What You Will Learn in this Episode with Timestamps 2'52 The biggest difference between using Uber in the US and in France is the language barrier. 3'25 Uber Pool vs. Uber Black: If you use the Uber Pool option, because it's a big city, you will have a lot of people riding with you and it will add on to the time it takes to get where you want to go. Uber Pool is sometimes half the price of Uber Black, so it's worth it if you're not in a hurry. 4'05 No Uber Pop in France: Uber Pop is the Uber service with older cars. 4'30 To get an accurate bid you need to set your pin location properly. Sometimes you have to enter the address manually. 6'00 It's hard to get a good estimate of how long betore the driver will pick you up with Uber in Paris because of the traffic conditions. 7'10 Tips on what to do on May 1st in France. Blair suggests taking an organized tour on that day and going away from Paris with a group where everything is organized. 8'33 When using Uber in Paris you will get to use your French, and it's good to also have the Google Translate App. 9'15 Uber Pool is a better option in the US than in Paris, that could be that it's because there are fewer Uber drivers in Paris. 9'40 Uber in Paris is cheaper in August than during the rest of the year. That's probably because it's mostly tourists calling Uber in August, demand goes down, so prices go down as well. 10'25 Uber is worth it if you have more than two people in your party. To go from one of the Paris airports to either the city center or to Disneyland Paris, it's definitely worth it. A taxi between CDG Airport and the left bank will run you over 60€, the same ride on Uber is at least 15€ cheaper. 11'35 Comparing the price of metro tickets to Uber in Paris. Blair and her husband took 20 trips with Uber in Paris. Twenty metro tickets for 20 trips for two would cots 60€ if bought in packs of 10 (it would be 76€ if buying single tickets). Those same trips with Uber cost them 185€. So Uber is about 3 times the price of taking the metro. 13' Install the Uber App before you come to France, you will use the same App with the same credit card. 13'40 French cars also have a license plate on both the front and back of the car, so it's easier to recognize the car if you don't know European cars. 15' Basic French phrases you will need when using Uber in Paris: c'est à gauche = it's on the left c'est à droite = it's on the right allumez la climatisation s'il vous plaît = turn on the AC please 16'30 Some things Blair and her husband enjoyed in Paris: Paris Picnic. Blue Bike Tour was great too. 19' What else did you wish you knew before you went? Uber in August is cheaper, if you go the rest of the year consider mixing things up and maybe using the bus system (see our episode on comparing the Paris Metro with the Paris Bus and details on how to use them both). 19'50 To go back and forth to the airport definitely use Uber. Here is information from the Uber website on where to wait for your Uber at CDG: from terminals 1, 2A, 2C, 2D and 2F, exit on the departure level. From terminals 2E, 2G and 3, exit on the arrivals level. Head outside and wait at the curb. Then enter your terminal and door number so your driver knows where to find you. 21'45 Air France buses between CDG and Paris city center.
