The Journey Of A Dancer – with Tommy Franzen

The Kevin Clifton Show

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 20, 2019 100:25

This week, Kevin talks to Olivier Award-nominated performer, choreographer (and Kevin's flatmate!) Tommy Franzen, who over the last few years has carved something of a legend for himself in the world of dance. In this fascinating conversation, Kevin talks to Tommy about the people who have inspired him the most, the origins of the dance styles that have formed his own style, his views on competitive dance, his journey into property investment, and the qualities that make him one of the country's greatest performers.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Tommy's dance career started at a very young age, when he was inspired by his sister, and visiting celebrity dancers in Sweden, to begin dance lessons. After some initial setbacks, and confidence issues, Tommy never looked back. “Locking" was born from social dances of the sixties, and involves locking your body tight, and is named after its inventor, dancer Don “Campbellock” Campbell. Its proponents since then have included Richard Pryor and Dick Van Dyke. “Popping” evolved when music changed in the 70s and 80s, when locking no longer fit with the contemporary music styles. It emerged as a major dance style on the West Coast. Hip hop style dancing is less regimented, and ever-evolving. People seem to be drawn to the dancing itself, instead of the formalised competitions that surround styles such as ballroom and latin. This means that it can naturally evolve without breaking the so-called “rules” set down by dance organisations. There seems to be a small pool of judges and coaches in the dance-competition world. Often this can be used to a dancer's advantage, as they can find themselves performing for people they have been trained by, and can plan accordingly. Tommy is not attracted to the concept of using dance to compete against someone else. It affects him emotionally, and affects his performance, and so he avoids it.  Many are drawn to performing by the lure of celebrity, by the fact that they can spend their lives earning money from doing something they love. For Tommy, the attraction of dance is the sense of joy he experiences while performing.  Companies like Zoo Nation, Boy Blue and Avant Garde, have pushed dance companies from obscurity, into the mainstream. As a result, dancers can now find real employment opportunities. Hip-hop dance theatre is rising in popularity. Spearheaded by a creative generation, stories are being told by hip hop dancing, with as much narrative involvement and dramatic tension as standard theatrical productions. There were concerns when Tommy was offered a role on the BBC's So You Think You Can Dance, as he was worried in case he was portrayed in a way that he was not comfortable with. He ended up reaching the final, and partnering several times with eventual winner, Charlie Bruce. Choreography is a tiring process, for both Kevin and Tommy. It involves a lot of thinking, mental space, and consideration. Listening to the music over and over again helps the dance to take shape in the mind. The uncertainty of regular employment as a dancer is what made Tommy investigate the world of property investment, seeing an opportunity to give himself a Plan B. It was Tommy who introduced Kevin to this way of investing, which he subsequently did. BEST MOMENTS ‘I felt so exposed' ‘With ballroom and latin, the “endgame” is usually competition dancing' ‘What I love about your style of dancing is that it's not geared towards that' 'It was my birthday party, and I was the only one not dancing' 'The shows you do are like a story. They're like a musical' ‘Dance-ical? Is that a word?' ‘I'm so glad that we've been given songs and concepts that have really excited us' ‘If you judge what you do too much, that's when you end up in the trap' ‘A blank sheet of paper is really scary' VALUABLE LINKS   www.sadlerswells.com Tommy Franzen Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/tommythefranzen/?hl=en Tommy Franzen's Website - http://www.tommyfranzen.com/Tommy_Franzen_Official/Tommy_Franzen.html Tommy Franzen Twitter - https://twitter.com/tommyfranzen?lang=en Rob Moore - https://robmoore.com Rich Dad Poor Dad (Amazon) - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rich-Dad-Poor-Teach-Middle/dp/1612680194/   ABOUT THE HOST Kevin Clifton is a professional dancer who has been performing & competing at the highest level for over a decade. The B&E Podcast #162 “The Illusion of Safety In Creativity" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: This one was so damn good.  Just click on it now.  We break down all kinds of the biggest problems we face when it comes to creating and when it comes to being an artist.  Hint, it has almost nothing to do with technical ability and more to do with our mindset towards it. POINT #1: "THE TAIL WAGGING THE DOG" - We have often become trained to come at our work from a technique first approach.  This is riddled with all kinds of problems that severely limit if not completely stifle your potential. POINT #2: “TECHNIQUE" - Your art is never about the technique.  The more we begin to understand this and accept this truth the better our work will become and the freer we will feel as creators.  What you do is not about the technique and it never will be. POINT #3: “FALLING" - The biggest reason we cling onto technique, both in ourselves and in society, is because it gives us a sense of safety.  This sense, however, is an illusion.  When we rely solely on our technical skills to see us through to artistry we lose its most critical component.  Much like love, we have to fall and begin to trust that the fall is precisely what is necessary. The B&E Podcast #158 “What Stops People From Being Original" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: Being original is one of those things that an artist strives for but is one of those things that is hard to pin down.  How do you be original?  How do you create something original?  How do you know?  We explore and try to shed some light on this tricky subject. POINT #1: "WHAT YOU SAW" - We often fall into the trap of taking all of our inspiration from works we've seen or heard from other artists.  It's great to be inspired by others we admire but not so great to simply try and create what they did.  When we copy we rob ourselves of our potential to be original. POINT #2: “YOUR LIFE" - Learning to follow our own impulses, feelings, and ideas as they come up in our work is the thing that sends us in the direction of originality.  Your art does not fuel art, your life fuels your art.  The mundane, the little details and seeming trivialities of your life are your gold. POINT #3: “TRUST IS THE KEY" - Unlocking your art requires trust in your life experience.  Trusting that it has value, that there are things about you and how you express that are inherently original and unique. The B&E Podcast #153 “Let the Criticism Come" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: We kick off a big talk on criticism once again, how we handle it as artists, where it comes from, how to know where it's coming from and so on.  What we uncover is that there is no need to fear criticism in any form it comes from to find liberation. POINT #1: "UNDERSTAND BEFORE YOU CRITICIZE" - If you're active as a critic of an artistic medium it's important that you know what it entails, not just technically but personally and deeply.  Whether that means you have to do it yourself and put your own work out there, intimately knowing what you criticize will make you more valuable to the process.  Ask yourself, how would I like to receive criticism? POINT #2: “TEAR IT ALL DOWN" - Some people don't really provide constructive feedback.  It's not particularly hard to tell when that happens -- usually full of jarring trash talk and cruel personal opinion without explanation of possible improvement.  When you encounter this kind of talk, sweep it off. POINT #3: “GREAT CRITICISM" - It can be an art unto itself.  It can help an artist see where they acted or expressed inauthentically or where the message got lost in the technique.  It can be a spirit of cooperation to push communication further and bolder and even be a source of inspiration. The B&E Podcast #138 “Being an Effective Artist Within Your Means" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: Sometimes we have to make difficult decisions when it comes to our art and the industry that caters to it.  We must weigh between choices of practicality and reality - time, place and matter - and our drive towards artistic integrity.  There are great values in both, and knowing what they are can help you pick a direction to move forward. POINT #1: "TO BE OR NOT TO BE... FOR NOW" - When certain elements are time contingent it can be tempting to double down and force something through.  There can be a value in just getting it done, but sometimes taking a step back to check in with where your values lie will wisely suggest striking at another time. POINT #2: “PRACTICAL SHMACKTICAL" - Being practical can lead us into making hasty decisions that ultimately don't serve our art and overlook why we're doing it all in the first place.  Let practicality inform, not dictate. POINT #3: “WHO DO YOU WANT TO BE?" - Making decisions at a certain point can feel like splitting hairs.  When you find yourself in that situation as yourself the question, "who do I want to be"?  This powerful tool can help you cut through the little details and find clarity. The B&E Podcast #134 “What Video Games Can Teach Us About Creating An Experience" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: We like us some video games around here on the B&E Podcast, and we like to explore the finer, artistic concepts behind them.  As a modern mass form of media and entertainment as well as art, it has unique challenges and opportunities in its creation.  With video games, it's all about the experience. POINT #1: "REVOLUTION IN TECHNOLOGY" - Video games were born of technology, and their evolution continues to be fueled by it.  As technology progresses new opportunities to create new types of experiences present themselves beyond simply making things prettier. POINT #2: “HOW FAR WILL IT GO?" - There are a lot of interesting developments in video games right now, namely in virtual reality.  It poses the potential for powerful new immersive experiences but also could both traumatize as well as desensitize if not respected. POINT #3: “IT ALL COMES DOWN TO YOU" - One of the great things about games is that they really are tailored for creating an experience for YOU.  Big things and little things in the design are meticulously crafted for you to have an experience of some kind.  How can you find ways to tailor your work for the audience's experience? The B&E Podcast #132 “The Illusion of How a Masterpiece is Made" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: C'mon, let's be honest, we all want to make a masterpiece of some kind.  Who wouldn't want to?  Why wouldn't you want to?  We have a lot of ideas of how that is made and many of them are complete fallacies.  So how does one create a masterpiece?  Time to dive in! POINT #1: "SEEDS OF IDEAS" - Sometimes a seed is all you need.  We often overlook these simple but often powerful initial inspirations believing we need to have the whole flower for it to be "good" or worthwhile.  Go with the seed.  Nurture, follow, respond, and see what happens. POINT #2: “YOU BEING AUTHENTIC?" - Getting connected to our authentic self and voice is crucial if we want to have any hope of ever creating something anyone considers a masterpiece, including ourselves.  Only through such expression of genuine honesty can we have the right materials to take it beyond. POINT #3: “GOTTA HAVE FAITH" - Even if you've done everything right, there are no guarantees for any particular outcome.  Having faith in your project and what brought you to it in the first place helps you detach from the results, create with greater clarity, joy, and freedom. MENTIONS IN THIS PODCAST: Russell Brewing Company (White Rabbit Hoppy Hefeweizen) - Today's Craft Brewery "Reservoir Dogs" (Movie) - Quentin Tarantino Mark Zuckerberg Quote - “Let me tell you a secret: Ideas don’t come out fully formed. They only become clear as you work on them. You just have to get started. If I had to understand everything about connecting people before I began, I never would have started Facebook. Movies and pop culture get this all wrong. The idea of a single eureka moment is a dangerous lie. It makes us feel inadequate since we haven’t had ours. The B&E Podcast #121 “Why We Feel Out of Control & How to Find It” Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: What do we actually control?  This is a big question we explore and how that pertains to us as artists.  We discover that by becoming aware of the things we actually control and don't control, we find greater joy and freedom to create and live. POINT #1: “CONTROL OF WHAT?" -There's a lot of things we try to have control or think we have control over but do not.  Put simply, if what we are aiming to do involves another person to accomplish, we don't actually have control over it.  There is a small part we can command which is our own actual do-able actions and responses. POINT #2: “HUMBLE PIE" -We have to eat a little of this every now and then.  When we learn to do it willingly we discover it's not so bad.  Humility helps us to see what we don't have control over and gain clarity and direction for ourselves to move forward. POINT #3: "USE THE FORCE" -By trying to control outcomes that we have no real authority over is not only futile but totally insane.  When we let these go we free up energy and to create with more richness and vitality. The B&E Podcast #113 "The Art of How to Motivate Yourself" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: Nothing like a Not So Serious podcast to get into the little problem of motivation.  Turns out, it involves rethinking some of our programmings and getting over a lot of social stigmas.  When we follow our truest desires of what we want, without shame or guilt, we can create more joyfully and build momentum for taking on the big goals. POINT #1: "DO WHAT YOU WANT" -You might be surprised to realize how often we neglect doing what we really want.  Sometimes doing what we want may seem counterproductive because we're judging its worth.  Maybe doing that thing, no matter how trivial, may be the key to getting the ball rolling -- even if that's watching a movie, or taking a walk, or going out for a coffee. POINT #2: "REALLY DO WHAT YOU'RE DOING" -Now that we're doing more of what we want, now we have to actually do it.  Really do it.  One hundred percent.  Even if that is playing video games.  So often we don't even really do passive activities -- we're on our phones or thinking about the other things we should be doing.  When you're not fully doing something, you're not really doing anything.  Commit to work and commit to play, and you'll find more energy and more joy. POINT #3: "STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES" -We have our goals and ambitions that require discipline and work.  That doesn't mean we have to grind the whole way.  Chip away, work towards it, but take time to breathe and enjoy yourself. The B&E Podcast #111 "The Big Picture of Having an Acting or Writing Career" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: This one takes all kinds of delightful little turns into specific areas concerning acting and writing.  From being a beginner to a novice to making a career worth having, there's lots of information and misinformation out there.  Let's get honest with each other and with ourselves and make choices from an authentic place. POINT #1: "NATURAL, CATHARTIC, REALISTIC" -There are a few trouble spots that actors and writers can get themselves into in their work.  Usually, they have something to do with what we think "should" be going on or getting caught up in our own emotions.  It's all part of the process and we can learn something from every stage. POINT #2: "WE ALL BEGIN SOMEWHERE" -We don't all get the same start or advantages -- that doesn't mean we bemoan our fate and curse others for what we perceive they got and we didn't.  Our biggest enemy to starting and creating what we want is ourselves and no one else. POINT #3: "GETTING CREDIT" -Many actors and writers start out or fall into the trap of being credit seekers for everything they do.  The constant need for validation and recognition is a surefire way to suffocate yourself, your passion, and your career over the long stretch. We get into some terrific practical and philosophical wanderings about the choices we make as artists and the consequences that come with it. POINT #1: "SAY SOMETHING HONEST" -You can tell as fantastical a tale in your work as you want, but it doesn't mean getting away with not saying something meaningful and truthful about our humanity. POINT #2: "STAND FOR SOMETHING" -There are times when we may feel pressured to do something in our work or for our careers that goes against what we think is right. Pick your battles, think about what you are trading off, but what are we if we don't have some convictions about what we create? POINT #3: "BE MINDFUL OF YOUR CAREER" - Artistic industry can be a fickle creature and sometimes we get opportunities to strike while the iron is hot -- we're in demand and have an audience. It's a terrific place to be in and making good choices can mean the difference between a long career and one that fizzles very quickly. The B&E Podcast #106 "The Creative Bond of True Friendship" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: There's nothing like having friends around when we're in creating. But what does that mean? Yes, we can literally have our friends collaborate with us on projects which open us up to new sides of each other we've never really seen and even deepen our relationships. How about being a friend and giving friendship to all those around you who are involved? What then? What does that do? Find out now! POINT #1: "FRIENDS, BOUNDARIES, INTIMACY" -If we're working closely with our friends it's important to be able to remain professional especially since all kinds of unexpected things can happen. Know when you're being a friend, and know when you're assuming another role. When you always respect and value each other, your personal relationships can deepen as a result. POINT #2: "FAILURE IS SUCCESS" -We separate failure and success as different things. What if they were part of the same thing? When we stop painting failure in a negative light we can become less afraid of it and offer this perspective to others around us. When creative partners aren't in fear of failing in front of one another, amazing things can happen. POINT #3: "GIVE FRIENDSHIP" -We cannot control the kind of friendship others give us, but we can freely give it to whoever we choose. By being supportive of others we're working with, giving them compassion, encouragement, and honesty, we create with more joy and authenticity. MENTIONS IN THIS PODCAST: Steamworks Brewing (Flagship IPA) - Today's Craft Brewery "Making Movies" (Book) - Sidney Lumet Jeff Foster - "I will always listen deeply to you, but I will never try to fix you, mend you, stop you feeling what you are feeling or give you second-hand, memorised answers. I will not get into drama with you, I will not indulge and feed your stories and mental conclusions and fears, I will not mistake who you are for my story about you, my dream of who you are.But friend, I will meet you in the fires of hell, I will hold your hand there, I will walk with you as far as you need to walk, and not turn away, for you are myself, and in the deepest recesses of our experience we are intimately each other, and we cannot pretend otherwise..." We talk about lessons we've learned over the last year and truths we continue to run into with our processes. Hope you enjoy! POINT #1: "SHIT ON THE WALL" -When it comes to being a creative professional, the biggest thing that separates is the ability to create and put it out there. Being more talented or skilled often has little to do with generating success. POINT #2: "GOOD, BAD... WHAT'S TRUTHFUL?" -It's almost impossible to know what's actually good and bad, so trying to determine what that is while you're creating becomes a defeating process. Focus on being truthful and trust that making it "good" is built in. POINT #3: "BEING HUMAN" -We face ups and we face downs. This is part of being a human. The B&E Podcast #088 "Seeing the Art in Social Media" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: Social media is here to stay. No matter how much we might want to resist that, there's no sense in denying its impact on the world we live in and how powerful a tool it can be. The trouble is how we find a way that works for us as artists to make use of it that doesn't compromise our integrity. As it turns out, social media draws some very similar parallels to how we navigate artistic industry in other ways. POINT #1: "IT'S STILL ABOUT GIVING VALUE" -If you've listened to us recently, the new way of promoting and marketing yourself and what you do is to offer something with no expectation of getting anything back. Give something that is of value, whether that's an article, a cause or some words of wisdom and do it consistently. POINT #2: "NO MORE B.S." -Forget about trying to look a certain way. People have little to zero tolerance for disingenuous people. Be who you are, share things that you actually find valuable and you'll create real connections with people with similar passions and interests. POINT #3: "IT CAN BE AN ART" -Like working within other frameworks of our creative industries, there are certain techniques and limitations to be aware of, but ultimately we create the content that we are putting out there. We can learn to look at social media as just another way of extending our artistry into the world. The B&E Podcast #083 "Take the Time to Make it Personal" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: We overlook our personal connection to our work more often than we think. Whether we have been contracted to create something or if it's our own project, we need to be deeply, emotionally connected to it. We need to feel the desire to make our creations regardless of what may come of them. When we have this level of meaning, we run into fewer blocks along the way to making our best works. POINT #1: "WOULD YOU DO IT ANYWAY?" -No matter what might happen with your work, do you still feel a strong emotional desire to do it? To reveal your message, to tell this story, to say something burning inside you? You should be getting as much out of the works you are creating as your potential audience. When you're tapped into that you will find the power to blast through your walls and get it done. POINT #2: "JUDGMENT REMOVES HUMANITY" -When we cast judgment on the subjects of our art, it doesn't matter how powerful the message or passion we feel, we cut out the humanity that is so essential to our audience connecting to it in a more profound way. POINT #3: "FAME SHMAME" -Fame is a strange thing to make as our ultimate goal in life. It will make our pursuits lifeless and won't fill the human void we feel, which compelled the goal in the first place. Feeling worthy comes from doing what feels worthy to you. The B&E Podcast #081 "Prioritizing Between Creativity & Logic" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: Our free-for-all conversation hits some amazing discoveries on the nature of our mind/minds in our processes and works. We learn that there are some profound gains by setting focused priorities in multiple stages of creating. Give space to your creative mind, and to your logic mind, just not at the same time. POINT #1: "YOU CONTROL ONLY WHAT YOU CONTROL" -Focus on what you're actually in control of, which means letting go of results. There's nothing wrong with having goals and ambitions, but when that's all it's about you may find becoming strenuous and uninspired. POINT #2: "LET YOUR ARTIST DO HIS/HER JOB" -When you're creating, let your artist take the reigns and do what it does best -- CREATE. In order for your work to be at its best your artist needs to be given one hundred percent focus on where it shines. Once it's done, the logical, industrial mind can step in and do what it does best. POINT #3: "DON'T CROSS THE STREAMS!" -Knowing when the editing, logical, evaluative mind is sticking its nose where it doesn't belong is imperative to creating with courage and boldness. When that voice enters your head asking "is this any good", "will people like this" etc know that it's not doing anything to help you while you're in creative mode. That voice is useful only after your initial inspiration is down. Likewise, don't bring your artist voice into the room when evaluation time begins. The B&E Podcast #080 "The Responsibility of Becoming a Major Player" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: Today we get a little philosophical with it. As we get more success as artists, climbing the ladder so to speak, our reach and impact with our audience grows. Does that mean we have a greater obligation and responsibility in terms of our work and lifestyle? We explore the potential influence we have on the world and what that means for us as growing artists. POINT #1: "JAWS!!!" -It was a film about a fictional great white shark which subsequently resulted in the hunting and mass destruction of a habitat. Was the film responsible? Probably not entirely, but its influence is pretty evident. POINT #2: "BE MINDFUL" -It's impossible to know what the full impact of our work and/or celebrity might be in the world. The best thing we can do is to try and be as mindful as possible about the potential destructive outcomes on society as a whole from the messages we're putting out. POINT #3: "WE'RE ALL RESPONSIBLE" -This is not about blaming any one person, organization, or group for the bad things that happen in the world. When you really look at it, we all have a role to play. Ultimately are you trying to put something of light into society to create positive change? The B&E Podcast #078 "The Misconception about Staying Consistent" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: As artists, we have this constant battle with consistency in the quality of our work as well as in our everyday commitment. There are a lot of band-aid solutions to the problem of consistency, but they are themselves inconsistent. We discover that the solution lies in the realms of trust and truth which are deeper issues to deal with and perhaps provide the key to all of it. POINT #1: "CONSISTENT QUALITY ISN'T IN CONTROL, IT'S IN TRUTH" -We often pursue consistency through attaining a greater sense control in surface level methods and tools. We've been taught to deal with it in this way, but when it comes to art, this is typically counterproductive. When we stop trying, pushing, grappling for control, we open up to presence and truth which give us a new level of consistency in our work. POINT #2: "COMPASSION FOR WHERE WE ARE OR WERE" -Being able to admit to how we feel about where we are or were with compassion releases us from our judgments towards ourselves in the now. Remember, compassion is the recognition that we are doing the best we can within our current beliefs and capacities. No need to beat yourself, move forward with new knowledge and awareness and accept where you're at. POINT #3: "TRUST BLOWS IT WIDE OPEN" -Trust is one of the biggest underlying issues when it comes to attaining some level of consistency in our work. When we don't trust, we avoid where we're at, push for control where we don't have any, and doubt ourselves the whole way. Learning to trust ourselves and where we are unlocks our potential no matter how we're feeling. The B&E Podcast #076 "What to do When It's a Slog & a Struggle" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: We were literally struggling today and we decided to make it our topic for discussion. It went deeper than either of us expected. We learned that there is a lot to learn when we find ourselves in moments of struggle. What we discovered is that admitting it to ourselves is key to moving through it and finding extraordinary growth within ourselves. POINT #1: "ADMIT IT, YOU'RE STRUGGLING" -As we have heard so many times, the first step is admitting. When we can admit that we are struggling, without harsh judgments of ourselves, we can stop putting ourselves in a victim position and be more proactive. POINT #2: "SHIFT GEARS, RESET EXPECTATIONS" -After we have acknowledged our situation for what it is, we can change our expectations and focus on what we can actually do and where we can make progress. POINT #3: "THERE'S GOLD IN THERE" -When we find ourselves swearing at the computer or bemoaning the circumstances and limitations, it's usually an indication of something much deeper going on. When we dig in and shine a light on it, we can discover limiting beliefs that can be a catalyst to healthy change. We learn to embrace struggle as a necessary means to our evolution. The B&E Podcast #074 "There Are No Perfect Conditions, Only Fears to be Faced" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: In the long list of reasons and excuses we give ourselves to avoid creating, a big one is about not having the circumstances or conditions to flourish. Usually, these are superficial rationalizations covering our deeper insecurities and fears around our work. When we can get a broader sense of our ideas around perfectionism, we can strive for excellence while owning our fallibility. POINT #1: "CIRCUMSTANCES ARE SHALLOW" -When we start telling ourselves a story around not having the tools or perfect situation to do our best work, we sell ourselves short and limit our creative ability. Not only that but usually they're thin veils for deeper fears and anxieties. POINT #2: "CONDITIONS ON CREATIONS ARE PARALYSING" -We often put a lot on our ideas and projects, as in we feel a kind of obligation for everything we do to be a massive success. Such an expectation restricts our potential as artists. Not everything can, needs, or has to be anything more than your best effort and expression. POINT #3: "THE EGO HIDES BEHIND PERFECTION" -Perfectionism is the refusal to move forward. When we get caught in the trappings of perfectionism, we make very little movement all in the name of staying comfortable and avoiding criticism. POINT #1: "VALUE YOUR CREATIVE PARTNERS" -Artists find themselves very often collaborating with others. The B&E Podcast #056 "In the Game of Industry the House Always Wins" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: As artists, it's important for us to acknowledge how we participate within our industry which is there to meet its own needs. When we become a slave or entirely driven by how the industry operates we undermine our own integrity as artists and can lose our entire sense of purpose. POINT #1: "THE INDUSTRY SERVES ITS OWN INTERESTS" -Whether you like it or not, artistic industry has its own interests. It is not interested in being fair to you or giving you back what you feel you're putting in. By not putting all of our eggs in one basket and expecting some kind of return from it, we can refocus on doing the things that matter. POINT #2: "STAY TRUE AND TRUST" -Getting competitive and comparing ourselves to our peers is typically a study in paranoia. By trusting that we do indeed have an original authentic voice, we can stay focused and present on simply creating. POINT #3: "NO JOURNEY IS THE SAME" -There is no one way of getting to what we dream of achieving. There is no one size fits all solution in artistic mediums. Some journeys will move quickly, others may take many years and look vastly different than others -- what matters is that we do what matters to us. We touch on the craft of screenwriting, looking at our fears, challenging our perceptions and connecting with our work and others with truth and authenticity. It takes the spirit of a pioneer to be an artist. POINT #1: "FEAR IS A MOTIVATOR WITH A CEILING" -Fear can certainly motivate us to get things done, but it does have its limits. When you begin to realize that the things you fear aren't all that scary, you have to find a deeper connection to what you do which can be challenging but is ultimately freeing and more fulfilling. POINT #2: "DEPROGRAMMING WHAT WE THOUGHT WE KNEW" -We have a lot of beliefs we don't realize we carry with us that we may (probably) have learned in childhood that are destructive and sabotaging to creating. Challenge your beliefs, question them and welcome others opinions. POINT #3: "ARTISTS REMIND US OF WHAT'S IMPORTANT" -Artists are communicators of things that are bigger than any single one of us -- that's why we do this. We explore the deeper meanings of our lives and existence to remind us of our humanity. POINT #1:"THE ARTIST'S LIFE HAS MANY MYTHS" -Artists are often seen as people who have no responsibility, are lazy and are simply "born" with talent. Being a real artist requires having a talent for your talent and a deep inner call to express something from within. There's a lot more thought, energy, and discipline that goes into an artistic life. POINT #2: "THERE'S BETTER WAYS TO MAKE LOTS OF MONEY" -Sure, many artists in different fields become very wealthy and famous, but it's not most and not usually right away. Either you make a commitment for the long haul or chose something where you KNOW the next paycheque is coming. POINT #3: "BEING AN ARTIST IS BEING ENGAGED TO THE PURSUIT OF TRUTH" -We can be artists in our lives no matter what we do when we engage and pay attention to our lives. Break out of the routines and examine who we are and what we are. You may pursue that through an artistic endeavor professionally or for fun. We dissect and examine this idea of being a "phoney", not being good enough, "who am I?" etc. Who are you not to? We look into where all of this might be coming from, its impact and how to keep it in its place. POINT #1:"THE PAST TELLS YOU YOU'RE A PHONY" -The past no longer exists, and is full of phantoms that mislead us. We make up stories that tell us that we're not worth it etc. Truth is that the fears that come up from the past are doing nothing to help us when we are trying to create, and that there is no truth in them at all. POINT #2: "WHO AM I NOT TO?" -Who am I? Who are you not to? Why do we feel the need for permission? When will you be ready if not now? Trust yourself. Trust the authenticity of your love and passion. When you follow that, the gifts and rewards will be beyond what you can comprehend or predict. POINT #3: "ATTACK THOUGHTS!!!" -We attack ourselves and our drives and ambitions out of a false sense of protection all the time. When we focus on our process and that we are ALWAYS in process, we become aware of what our next steps are to take and that even in the moments where it feels like nothing is happening, we are being given exactly what we need. POINT #1: "PROCESS MEANS COMING UP AGAINST OURSELVES" -Especially when we're in the middle of our work, our shadows and demons seem to always come out of the woodwork. Ignoring them or escaping them is not the answer. When you don't identify with them and are able to simply observe, we can release old perceptions that no longer serve us and take away their power. POINT #2: "WHEN IN DOUBT, FOLLOW YOUR VALUE/FOLLOW YOUR JOY" -On our way to completing our works, knowing what to do next can become shrouded and hard to see. In those moments we are good to check in with ourselves and ask "what's the most joyful thing for me to do right now?". It will lead you to what comes next and next and next..... POINT #3: "YOU ARE ALWAYS IN PROCESS -- LEARN TO TRUST IT" -There is never a time when we are no longer in process. The B&E Podcast #050 "The Great Lie of Suffering For Your Art" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: On our grand 50th podcast extravaganza, we accidentally cover a lot of topics that reflect on our conversations of past all the way to now. We go through a lot of territory from practical advice for your creative process to keeping your values in mind, to the place we give suffering and pain in our work. POINT #1: "THERE'S NO CERTAINTY IN THE DATA" -You can follow all the rules and hit every note, check every box and yet not create a piece of art or creative work that connects with anyone. Likewise, you can blaze an unknown trail that no one will be able to follow. There's a harmonious balance where it all comes together. POINT #2: "WHERE WE PUT OUR VALUE" -Whether we define ourselves by what we have or what we don't have, it makes our enjoyment of our work dependent on external circumstances. You are more valuable than any sum of money large or small. Our joy comes from our own permission of freedom to do what we love. POINT #3: "SUFFERING FOR YOUR ART IS UNNECESSARY" -As artists, we often romanticize the tortured icons of our crafts. We even think that to be "good" at what we do REQUIRES it. The B&E Podcast #049 "Clearing Out What Pollutes Our Creativity" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: We go deep down the rabbit hole with this one. Today we put the past and the future in our sights and explore how our thoughts and feelings around them hinder us as artists. Creativity and presence go hand in hand when it comes to getting truthful in our work. POINT #1: "PAST AND FUTURE ARE GUILT AND FEAR" -Our past brings up feelings of regret, loss, and guilt; our thoughts about the future are riddled with anxieties, expectations, and fears. Ultimately you cannot live in either of them, and your thoughts about the past and future are thoughts you are having about them now. They pollute our ability to focus and be present to the tasks at hand. POINT #2: "CREATIVITY AND PRESENCE ARE SIBLINGS" -To truly engage with the creative process requires an openness and willingness to remaining present to what's happening as it's happening. When we're consumed with thoughts about the past and the future, we're bringing in a bunch of excess baggage that doesn't serve what we're doing and closes us off to possibility. POINT #3: "HOW IS THIS PERFECT RIGHT NOW?" -Ask yourself this question and answer it to bring your attention back to the present moment, reconnect to your joy and creative spark, and banish those polluting thoughts. Sometimes all this situation needs is a shift in perception. Maybe you're exactly where you're supposed to be, maybe this frustration will become part of the process, either way, it's all part of the journey if you choose to see it that way. POINT #1: "HOW DO YOU KNOW IT'S NOT WORKING?" -When we're present and open we often uncover that the struggle is part of the process that leads you to that perfect thing. POINT #2: "WHERE IS THE LOVE?" -If you're suffering through what you're doing, return to the love that brought you to it. If it's not there anymore, maybe it's time to reevaluate. There's nothing wrong with taking a step back to get a fresh take and a running start. POINT #3: "PAIN IS A TEACHER" -Pain is a fact of life, but it's also a teacher that pushes us to new perceptions and with it new wisdom. The B&E Podcast #047 "Coming of Age as an Artist w/ Sam Davidson" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: We have a great chat with musician Sam Davidson, aka Skim Milk, about the dreams and ideas we had as kids or teenagers about our art, and how those can change as we get older. Learning to embrace the change, let go of the past, and how it doesn't compromise who we are or our passion is essential to longevity. POINT #1: "LETTING GO IS NOT GIVING UP" -We oftentimes needlessly hang onto old ideas of what our dream or success looks like, having no idea what that would actually mean. As we gain life experience, those dreams can and should shift and change. The important thing to remember is that it doesn't mean you're giving up on your dream, in fact, it can bring more meaning and joy into your art. POINT #2: "FOLLOW THE JOY" -Basing joy on something you achieve later is depriving you of being present to the joy you can feel today. When you follow your joy, it is something you can do right now and in every single moment of your life. Then it doesn't matter what your future brings because you have already been living a dream. POINT #3: "ASK THE WHY" -Continuing to ask why you are doing what you are doing is an important thing to connect to. Beyond ideas of commercialism and success or not. If you weren't ever going to become a celebrity or household name, would you still do what you're doing? We get into how when we attach and identify ourselves with our works, the things we do, and the results they get, ultimately sabotages our ability to create freely and most importantly -- our joy. POINT #1: "RESULTS AND SUCCESS ARE PASSING" -If you are attaching your ability to be happy to your level of "success", you can easily be blown around into highs and horrible lows. Eventually being happy becomes about getting your next fix. POINT #2: "ATTACHMENT LIMITS YOUR POWER TO BE YOU" -When you base your value and happiness on something external, getting something, or some idea of success, you subconsciously tell yourself that others determine your ability to be happy. When you're not attached to outcomes or identified with your work you're free to let everything go no matter what happens -- good or bad. POINT #3: "KNOW THYSELF" -It's wisdom that has been told to us for ages. Examining ourselves and our beliefs is not the easiest or most comfortable task to undergo, but it is arguably the most noble and profound of endeavors. There's an experience to be gained by saying yes and going for it. It will all lead you to.... POINT #2: "...BALANCE!!!" -Only by making some decisions and opening up to what there is to learn from your present situation can you go beyond understanding and build wisdom. It's important that we are aware of the ideas that we are putting out into the world, especially when we're dealing with subject matter in violence and sex. We then take a small detour in trusting where we're at, communicating our ideas and allowing ourselves to do something that isn't great. Everything is an opportunity to learn and grow. POINT #1: "YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR MESSAGE" -The things we say with our art have an impact no matter how much you might doubt it. It comes down to what you want to put out into the world. Be conscious and be aware. POINT #2: "YOUR VOICE COMES OUT WHEN YOU TRUST YOURSELF" -Second guessing and editing yourself while you're in the middle of working is counterproductive. You don't know what the "right" answer is. By engaging and being present with your work you uncover the gems and prove to yourself that your ideas are worth it. POINT #3: "CREATIVE PROCESS IS A MARATHON" -If you're running a marathon, going back to redo a certain section makes absolutely no sense. As we discover, it comes down to what's important in all relationships. Being encouraging and open is still the key. POINT #1: "ARTISTS HAVE A FEW PARTICULARS, BUT RELATIONSHIPS ARE THE SAME" -Artists can and tend to be sensitive types who work irregular hours and don't make consistent incomes, but other than that it's the same relationship foundations that will make it come together. POINT #2: "SUPPORT EACH OTHER" -An artist has a lot of insecurity in their line of work, so support and encouragement is huge. AS an artist, don't think that you're the only one who needs it -- everyone is going through their struggles. POINT #3: "YOUR RELATIONSHIP IS AN ACT OF CREATION" - At the end of the day, it takes two to make a relationship work. When we learn how to have lives with other interests and pursuits we can discover a whole new meaning and perspective to our vocations. POINT #1: "GET A HOBBY OR DISCIPLINE" -Whether you're an actor, a writer, a musician or filmmaker -- whatever it is, it's important that you have another interest that's unrelated to your art. It helps refill the well and lends perspective on what you do. POINT #2: "SLAVE TO THE GAME" -Claim your power of choice. If you choose to play the games of the industry, that's fine -- know what you're in for and go for it. If it's not your interest, learn to blaze your own path or take a step back and reevaluate your sense of purpose and connection to it. POINT #3: "THERE WILL BE BLOOD" -It doesn't matter our level of "success" or how far we ascend the ladder, we will come up against new challenges. The B&E Podcast #039 "Artistic Process Meets Industry Awareness" iTunes Link: https://itun.es/i6hv7ck SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: The vision you have for your art is where it all begins and where it hopefully ends -- in between is the process. Sometimes creativity happens within the process and structure itself and can launch you to a greater understanding of your work. Beyond that, it's also important to be aware and respectful of what your industry expects from you. That doesn't mean that you have to follow it but it does allow you to make a more informed and inspired decision. POINT #1: "CREATIVITY COMES IN FORMS YOU DON'T EXPECT" -Sometimes creative inspiration comes in the form of HOW you do your work -- your process or structure. These can give you new avenues in taking your vision to the next level, so be open to creativity in its many forms. POINT #2: "BEING BLIND TO THE INDUSTRY AND BUSINESS CAN WORK AGAINST YOU" -We often neglect or ignore our respective creative industry as a means of protecting ourselves, irritation or any number of reasons -- that doesn't mean you should. Being aware of industry demands and expectations as well as having respect for it can serve you in making more conscious decisions to aid you in having a career. POINT #3: "YOUR VISION IS ALWAYS YOUR GREATEST VALUE" -Having your ducks in a row is great, but we are drawn to people's passion and vision more than anything else. They will almost inevitably come up but there's no need to fear them. Being aware of where they are presenting themselves can often open up new roads and present unique opportunities for your own originality. POINT #1: "YOU WERE BORN TO BE A CLICHE" -Most of us are so overexposed to social marketing and engineering that it's easy to unconsciously start putting that into our work. Being aware of it means that we can make conscious choices for our own voice to be heard. POINT #2: "THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH FEELING FAMILIAR" -If your work has a familiarity to it, it's not necessarily a bad thing. It makes it accessible and opens your audience to the unique, original messages you want to communicate. POINT #3: "YOU DO HAVE A UNIQUE VOICE" -Wondering whether you have anything original or unique to say is a moot argument to have with yourself. Very often we hold beliefs that serve only to contain and limit us from pursuing our dreams and our happiness. POINT #1: "IT'S NOT DEBATABLE, YOU HAVE BELIEFS" -We've been forming them since the day we were born and continue to do so every day of our lives. It's important that we examine them and are conscious of the way we interpret and create meaning surrounding our experiences. POINT #2: "THERE'S NO NEED TO BEAT YOURSELF UP" -We make mistakes, and sometimes those mistakes are how we have been looking at things. Forgive yourself and learn from it. Being hard on yourself will only make it more difficult to see the lessons and move forward. POINT #3: "EXAMINING YOUR BELIEFS IS EXCITING IF YOU ALLOW IT" -Self-reflection can be an intimidating prospect that can bring up a lot of resistance, but when you get in the practice of doing it, it becomes a powerful tool for transformation and creating a more joyful life. As well as sandwiches... and how sandwiches pertain to creativity. Not the most poetic metaphor but it works! Have a listen! POINT #1: "TAKE INSPIRATION, DON'T TAKE THE IDEA" -Learn what you like from the works you enjoy most, but don't try to recreate it. Make the next great thing! POINT #2: "EMPATHY & COMPASSION" -If you don't illicit these feelings from your audience, no one will really care or will connect with your work. That doesn't mean that you can't take on dark themes or ideas -- it will, in fact, take it to a deeper level. POINT #3: "MAKE ALLIES WITH STRUCTURE" -Don't think you're above certain structures within your creative medium. Structure permeates every natural part of our existence as well as in our creations. We discuss how failure is the best teacher and why our own self-image is what holds us back from doing what we are most passionate about. Being ready is partly something you prepare for, but it is also something you have to overcome as you go. POINT #1: "BEING READY IS NOT BEING INFALLIBLE" -There's a point where you have to exit the "classroom" and go out and do it. Actions turn knowledge to wisdom. You can't be prepared for everything and application will only deepen your understanding. POINT #2: "INDEPENDENCE IS GREAT, WORKING TOGETHER WILL TAKE YOU FURTHER" -We all have our deepest passion. Don't get bogged down in the things that don't serve that. Someone else has a passion for the other parts related to what you do and can make it more than what you thought possible. POINT #1: "PUT THE EXPERIENCE YOU WANT FIRST" -We often set goals by some outcome we think will make everything better. Rather, set your goals by the kind of experiences you want to have in your life ON THE WAY! When you begin to act in this way, the rewards become meaningless regardless the outcome. Our realm is in the unknown and in trusting our truth, our experience, and voice. Relying on past successes is a huge trap. Find a new way. POINT #1: "DON'T GET STUCK IN THE PAST" -We can learn our lessons through past works, successes, and triumphs but also learn when to move on. After all, we can only live and experience now. POINT #2: "BEGIN WHERE IT DOESN'T BEGIN" -What if you told the story where it wouldn't traditionally be? What's the after? What's the beginning? What would that look like? On this one we talk about trusting your audience, going on a journey in any artistic endeavor and how being "nice" is holding your art back from being authentic. POINT #1: "ART IS FOUND IN THE EXPERIENCE" -There's only so much you can plan before you begin your journey. You cannot control or prepare for everything. Remain open and curious. POINT #2: "BEING NICE MIGHT JUST BE A BUNCH OF BULLSHIT" -We often use "being nice" as an excuse not to express our truth -- it covers up what we think and who we are. You can still be a kind person and communicate with honesty. POINT #3: "EMBRACE THE CREATIVE ROAD TRIP" -You know where you begin and where you are ultimately heading, but there's no way to know what will happen along the way so don't fool yourself into thinking your clever enough to know better -- no one is. On today’s show I head over to Tenn 16, one of East Nashville’s great little eateries where I meet up with Melvin, Aaron, Kate and Bob of the New Nashville BitLunch meetup group. During lunch we talk about the youth unemployment crisis here and abroad, the miserable failure of a Vancouver bitcoin ATM machine, the prestigious Vanderbilt University Computer Science Department and everything else bitcoin related. The BitLunch meetup group is a revolving group of great folks who enjoy getting together once a week at a local restaurant to eat lunch, share stories and talk each others’ ears off about bitcoin, bitcoin and more bitcoin! Also on this episode We review the Bitcoin Music of 2015 Featuring some of the greatest musical compositions ever written in the history of the world - the Bitcoin world that is! Thanks to our sponsor Moonshine Cowboy Boot Wax, the Original, All Natural, non-toxic boot wax with a scent of orange. www.MoonshineBootWax.com To order any of these fine all-natural, non-toxic products, just head over to MoonshineBootwax.com. Use your credit card, your debit card or better yet . . . pay with Bitcoin! If anyone out there feels filled with the Christmas Spirit of giving, please scroll down to find my bitcoin address at the very bottom of the show notes and send me a small tip. If you’ve never done this before, it’s actually easier to do than you might think and it’s also a fun experience. Here’s how: First, just copy the bitcoin address found at the bottom of the show notes. Next, go to www.Blockchain.info and paste the Bitcoin address there. You’ll immediately see public information about my wallet as well as the QR code for my wallet. This QR code and the associated number here in the show notes is called my Public Key. Then just use the bitcoin wallet you have installed on your smartphone. Scan my QR code and send a small tip my way. And listen, if you think a $1.00 tip is too small, then think again. A dollar in bitcoins, sent to me from ten listeners out there will buy me lunch. And that’s not all, it also makes me feel that there actually IS someone out there who is listening to the show and appreciating the hard work that I put into the show each week. So if you’ve enjoyed the music and if you’ve enjoyed the show this week, please send a small bitcoin tip my way. Even 25 cents in bitcoin will put a smile on my face and coffee in the kettle. I’m a hard working guy with two jobs, so your help is much appreciated.
