For many parents, the beginning of the new school year can feel more monumental than the new year, so they recommend focusing on intentional goals and habit-building over resolutions. Emily and Dan emphasize that successful habits are rooted in identifying a clear destination. Drawing from his experience assisting corporate teams, Dan shares three goal-setting strategies that can be seamlessly adapted to family dynamics. Other business tools, like the 10-year strategy, can also be used to craft a visionary roadmap for your family's future.Identifying that goal in the first place may feel difficult, however. Knowing if you tend towards being a visionary or implementer can be helpful. “Just think positive. It's all in your head. Look on the bright side. Just write a better story.” Who here has had one of these cliches spoken to them and it just pissed you off or deflated you? It feels so affirming and even offensive to an honest experience and feeling we've had. The events we experience in life are…our truth. They happened and we were there and what we experienced is just, true. And yet right there is the problem, and opportunity. What we experience is just how our brain processed the event. As you'll hear in this episode, two people are in the woods and a bear walks past their camp. One is ecstatic about experiencing a bear in the wild while the other is terrified of the possible danger because they had a friend who was hurt by a bear. What is true? They saw a bear. The rest of the experience is just what they thought based upon their personal perceptions. This is our life. A bit of fact and the rest we make up around it. With that in mind, we have the opportunity to question what we think and feel and work to consider a bigger and more reasonable reality than our negative propensities often manufactures. This isn't just an idea, this is brain science, and my guest is Michael Hyatt and this is my fourth time having him on the show. Michael was CEO of Thomas Nelson publishing and today is a prolific author of wisdom and leader and mentor to a lot of the celebrity guests I've had on this show. Michael has had several New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling books, including Platform, Living Forward, Your Best Year Ever, Free to Focus, The Vision Driven Leader, and Win at Work & Succeed at Life. But this new book written by him and his daughter Megan, is top shelf for me. The book is called Mind Your Mindset: The Science That Shows Success Starts with Your Thinking. But I ask you to wait right there. This again is not just another pithy swipe at just trying to put a silver lining on things. You're going to hear Michael site scientific research on how our brain literally takes any incident, let's call it an objective reality, then your neurons go to work concocting a story around it so you can make sense of it, but what is really mind blowing to realize is the primary story your brain goes to work creating is a story that will protect you. This makes sense evolutionary when you are literally often in survival mode. But if you truly grasp that life is happening and your imperfect brain, and we'll get into that, goes to work doing what it can with what it has, which is not everything needed, to create a story that protects you in the moment. This is why you hear a friend or your spouse tell a story of something you both experienced it and you are sitting there wondering what on earth they are talking about. You were there and that is not at all what happened, right? Well. It's not right. Or wrong. It's the story your brain wrote. And if this is the case, much of the trauma and limitations and negative beliefs we have about ourselves in reference to what we have experienced, or what we think we have experienced…are in question. And maybe, we are capable of more. This is the episode. Get Michael's book you also get his MIND YOUR MINDSET COURSE for free, it's normally $479. mindyourmindsetbook.com/selfhelpful. My guest this week is Michael Hyatt, the founder and chairman of Full Focus and the author of several bestselling books, including Platform, Living Forward, Your Best Year Ever, Free to Focus, The Vision Driven Leader, and his newest book (with daughter Megan Hyatt Miller) Win at Work & Succeed at Life. (Listen to my interview with Megan on last week's show!) Michael has scaled multiple companies over the years, including a $250M publishing company with 700+ employees and his own goal-achievement company that has grown over 60% year over year for the past 4 years. Under his leadership, Full Focus has been featured in the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing companies in America for three years in a row and in 2020 the company was named to Inc.'s Best Work Places list. 4:27 – Michael 101 He spent most of his career in book publishing and has written about 20 books Michael has five daughters and 10 grandkids and they all live within 20 minutes of each other. His granddaughter calls him “Gandhi.” 8:18 – Goal setting The role of imagination is so crucial in problem solving and goal setting. People who are successful aren't smarter than most of us. They just tell themselves different stories about who they are.  They preserve the ability to imagine a bigger, better future. 21:10 – Finding your imagination You need to identify your story, interrogate your story and then tell a better story. You have to be conscious of your story. Because the story that you're telling yourself in your head becomes a controlling narrative that limits the scope of what you think is possible. 34:34 – Michael's heart attack Michael considers himself a very healthy person, but he had a heart attack while walking. He had to get quadruple bypass heart surgery. Some people have heart attacks and think their life is over, but others think their life has just begun. There are facts, and there is the meaning we assign to the experience. 41:12 – More brains are better than one God created us to live in communities. We're not meant to be lone rangers. Left alone with our own thoughts can spiral downward. One of the things that I think is so detrimental to our creativity right now in our society is that social media is facilitating more silos. Find people who think differently than you do. That enriches our world. 50:20 – Get to know you Last thing that made him laugh? Something a nurse said at his cardiac rehab session. Last time he cried? He can't recall, but the older he gets the more he cries. FEATURED QUOTES People that have accomplished more than us, a lot of times the only difference is they're just telling themselves a different story. They preserve the ability to imagine a bigger, better future. You have to be conscious of your story. Because the story that you're telling yourself in your head becomes a controlling narrative that limits the scope of what you think is possible. There are facts, and there is the meaning we assign to the experience. God created us to live in communities. We're not meant to be lone rangers. This week I was excited to welcome back to the show, Michael Hyatt and Megan Hyatt-Miller. Michael Hyatt is the founder and chairman of Full Focus. He has scaled multiple companies, including a $250M publishing company with over 750 employees and his own award-winning goal achievement and coaching company, Full Focus. Through his coaching program for small business owners, BusinessAccelerator®, and the bestselling Full Focus Planner, Michael has helped hundreds of thousands of achievers reach their biggest goals. He is also the author of several New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling books, including Platform, Living Forward, Your Best Year Ever, Free to Focus, The Vision Driven Leader, and Win at Work & Succeed at Life. Michael enjoys The Double Win with his wife of 40+ years, five daughters, and ten grandchildren. Megan Hyatt Miller is the President and Chief Executive Officer at Full Focus and the co-host of the popular Business Accelerator® podcast. As the chief executive of Full Focus, Megan has developed BusinessAccelerator® into the premier coaching program for small business owners, and has grown the Full Focus Planner to sell over 1 million copies. Megan is also Michael's oldest daughter. In their highly anticipated book, Mind Your Mindset: The Science That Shows Success Starts with Your Thinking (Baker Books, January 2023), New York Times bestselling author Michael Hyatt and Megan Hyatt Miller teach readers how to save themselves needless frustration and headache from trying to solve problems with strategies that no longer work. "Rather than thinking about what we're doing," they say, "we need to think about our thinking." Mind Your Mindset draws upon the latest Insights in performance psychology, neuroscience, and cognitive science, as well as case studies from Michael and Megan's own clients. Michael and Megan explore the power of our stories--stories about the problems we face-and how those narratives determine our strategy and, with it, our results They show how these stories are anchored in assumptions about the past, form our predictions of the future, and stem from the way our brain makes sense of the wild array of information it encounters every day. Rather than take those stories at face value, readers can change their stories, rewire their brain for better thinking, and develop new and better strategies. Mind Your Mindset offers three simple, proven steps to do just that and attain extraordinary results: 1. Identify the problem and the story surrounding it 2. Interrogate the story 3. Imagine something that works better These practices help readers cut through the fog of false narratives and offer clear, creative solutions for achieving their goals "Mind Your Mindset is your invitation to step boldly into a new and better way of thinking and living," write Michael and Megan. "Unsettling as it may be, uncertainty is not the enemy; it points not to chaos but to possibility. To have the confidence to engage the world and reshape our stories as needed is a far more valuable and reassuring asset than is certainty." Throughout the podcast series, there have been a number of pivotal books - books that the IDL roundtable have gotten tremendous value out of, and The Vision Driven Leader is certainly one of them. In the first episode of 2022, I chat about the importance of VISION and HOW to gain clarity on yours. Without clarity, navigating your path in life OR in business is like driving in a blizzard. You might ultimately reach your destination, but clarity of direction significantly enables your ability to get there fast. It's easier to bypass this piece when it comes to your goals, or team as an entreprenur and focus on the "strategies" and "work" instead. This leads to everyone running in circles. But by aligning around a clear and compelling vision, you can avoid any wasted effort on your day-to-day tasks. It's about creating and believing in something that doesn't exist yet. If you can't describe it, you can't create it. And if you feel a little cloudy with this - this episode is PERFECT for you! Business Unveiled: Expert Tips and Secrets from Top Creative Industry Professionals

How do you know if you're a leader? I think that real leadership starts with having a vision and a plan for your life and business. You have to know where you want to go, what success looks like, and how you'll get there. That’s the only way you can lead a team to make your vision come to life and the only way you can decide what to focus on with so many things competing for your attention. Today, we’re talking about the need for vision in leadership. Now, my vision isn't going to be your vision. You've got to find your own. But where do you start? I recommend that you start by doing a vision board. If you're not familiar with this, it's something where you cut out images from magazines and glue them to poster board or cardboard in order of importance. When they're all put together in one place, your entire focus is clear right there for the world to see. Doing an exercise like this makes your goals and your vision visible. The next thing to do is to start working on the steps that will get you there. You can't just allow your vision to be a dream: it has to have actionable items in it, things that are doable and specific for you as an individual. When you know what those actionable items are, you need to block off time in your calendar each week to get those things done! If the time to complete the task isn't blocked off on your calendar, it isn't going to happen! Eventually, week by week, that vision on your vision board starts to become real. If you want to be a good leader or if you want to be profitable and productive, you need to have a vision for your life and business. You've got to know what you want your life to look like, and you've got to treat this like a business that supports that life. So my challenge for you this week is to take a step back and consider where you're headed. What is your vision for yourself as a leader in your business? What is your vision for your life five years from now? Ten years from now? If you decide to make a vision board, let me know! Share your experience on social and tag me @angelaproffitt and we can all work toward these goals together!

Mo Bunnell breaks down the incredible insights of Michael Hyatt and shares how to use them to transform your business development efforts. Find out how to live your life by design by creating a compelling vision of where you want your business to be while eliminating, delegating, or automating tasks along the way. One of Michael Hyatt's greatest strengths is being able to distill complicated things down into simple, easy-to-follow models. Michael said there are three ways you can live your life: drift, driven, and by design. There are many reasons why you might end up drifting, but the cumulative effect of drifting has a major impact on your life. You often find yourself unhappy and unsure if you've been doing the right thing most of the time. You don't know if you've made progress because you haven't defined where you want to go. When it comes to business development, drifting is when you don't have a plan for how you want to improve your book of business, your relationships, the techniques, or the platform you are using. Being driven is when you succeed in one area of your life at the detriment of others. That can take the shape of being hyper competitive and can end up harming yourself, your relationships, and your business with a focus on short-term gains over long-term gains. When you are living your life by design, you are following your established vision of what you want your future to look like. Living by design is probably when you are the happiest and most productive. There are two major intervals of Mo's life where living by design transformed everything. He wrote down a brief description of what he wanted things to look like ten years in the future. There are four major aspects your vision should include based on the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument that covers the four ways that we think as humans. Your vision requires a theme, specific numbers, your day-to-day life, and what the people around say about your life at that point. Mo wrote down his goals and carried his written vision down with him for the first couple of years. The fact of writing it down and keeping it with him allowed him to reach his ten year goal in only eight years. The most recent ten year plan includes a spreadsheet and annual benchmarks. After creating the ten year vision Mo broke it down into smaller versions of that for each year on the way. Creating themes for each year makes it easier to implement new ideas at the right time and know exactly what you need to do to get where you want to go. Our brains are trained to think in weeks so make weekly the cadence of your progress. The happiest people, and the most productive, are the ones that celebrate incremental progress. The Rule of 72 is a shortcut for calculating compound growth rates and an easy way to predict how many years it takes for something to double. If you can get only 1% better every single week, after 72 weeks you will be twice as good as you are now. Most experts that have to bring in business, if they have time to invest they will probably spend that time getting better at their craft. But if they spent that time getting better at business development, that's something the client will notice immediately and will have a bigger impact on their business. Focus on your business development habits and your craft will improve as a result. In order to free up time, you need to either automate, eliminate, or delegate most of the activities in your business. This is important because every minute you spend on business development is far more valuable than the average hour spent on delivery. Look back on your numbers for the last year and calculate your Grow Big Index; then, use that as your litmus test for what you should be doing now. What are some tasks that you can completely eliminate? Use your Grow Big Index to figure out if it's valuable enough to be worth your time. If not, say no nicely and move on to the next task. Work with your team in a way that makes the most of your time while still being helpful to other people. Most people think of automation in terms of technology, but it extends beyond software. Think of the questions you get most and create well thought-out templates that address those questions. Extremely valuable and well thought-out templates allow you to give someone hours of value with only a few minutes of time. Write down what you do for business development and break it down into separate pieces like lead generation, creating demand, and staying top of mind. Then, consider which parts of that process can be automated. Business development is the project that never ends. It fuels your team's and organization's growth and it's exciting to always improve it. The people that Mo has seen improve the most all have the same thing in common. The ones that stick to business development week in and week out, making incremental progress while improving themselves, are the ones who find success.   Mentioned in this Episode: bdhabits.com Vision Driven Leader by Michael Hyatt Free to Focus by Michael Hyatt
