Building a diverse and successful associate practice in 2025 with Dr Esther ColeWelcome to the Business of Psychology podcast. Today I'm joined by Dr Esther Cole, the clinical director and founder of Lifespan Psychology, which is a proudly diverse and thriving associate practice. She's here today to talk to us about what it takes to build a thriving associate practice, particularly in the more challenging context we find ourselves in in 2025. This is a must listen if you are somebody that is thinking about building your team and expanding your impact through associate work. Esther is also an impressive psychologist in her own right. In 2020 she won the BPS Early Career Award for a book that she initiated and co-edited on pediatric acquired brain injury. Esther has a great passion for helping people who may not always feel confident to come forward for therapy and may not always be well served by the therapy on offer, and that's part of the reason that she set up her podcast ‘Breaking Through Therapy', which I think is amazing.Full show notes and a transcript of this episode are available at The Business of PsychologyReferences:10x Is Easier than 2x: How World-Class Entrepreneurs Achieve More by Doing Less by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy We Should All Be Millionaires: A Woman's Guide to Earning More, Building Wealth, and Gaining Economic Power by Rachel Rodgers Links for Esther:Breaking Through Therapy Podcast: www.lifespanpsychology.co.uk/podcastBOSS: www.lifespanpsychology.co.uk/coachingWebsite: www.lifespanpsychology.co.ukLinkedIn: Dr Esther ColeInstagram: @lifespan_psychologyFacebook: Lifespan Psychology - The Diverse PracticeLinks for Rosie:Substack: substack.com/@drrosieRosie on Instagram:@rosiegilderthorp@thepregnancypsychologistThe highlightsEsther tells us about her podcast, Breaking Through Therapy 01:20Esther tells us about herself and her career, and how she came to set up an associate practice 02:39Esther talks about the most common mistakes she's come across in associate practice 16:12 I ask Esther how we can encourage dedication from our associates 20:29We discuss recruitment and how to find the right people for your practice 26:42We talk about the skills you have to develop as a manager 34:10I remind people to listen to the Breaking Through Therapy podcast...

Are you a safe person? Do you cultivate and lead spaces that are safe? And how do you know the difference between lack of safety and discomfort? The hard truth is that we can never declare a person or a space “safe.” We can do all we can to cultivate safety within ourselves and we can be intentional about doing our best to be safe but we cannot name a space or a person safe. That is for others to decide. Which is vulnerable and challenging. If we want to increase our capacity for discomfort and work towards being safe, it will require us to get really clear on how we can be unsafe along with discerning the difference between safety and discomfort. And if we truly want to be a part of cultivating safe spaces and be safe people to others, we have to build our capacity for discomfort to: be wrong, make mistakes, be misunderstood, set and maintain boundaries, speak up when harm happens, and take ownership of our part when harm is done. This is something we need to feel through, not just think through. Today's guest digs into the difference between safety and discomfort, and the qualities we show when we are actually unsafe people.Tasha Hunter, MSW, LCSW is a Black, queer Internal Family Systems therapist. She is the owner of Ascension Growth Center, PLLC, servicing clients in North Carolina and Kansas. She serves Black/BIPOC women, and LGBTQ+. She is passionate about speaking about adult child trauma, suicide, and collective healing and liberation.Listen to the full episode to hear:The basic tenets of creating a safer spaceWhy the goal of a harm-free space isn't attainable, and why it matters more what happens when harm occursWhy creating safe spaces is a practice, not an end pointDiscerning the difference between discomfort and unsafetyBreaking down the qualities and behaviors of an unsafe person or spaceHow we can be unsafe to ourselvesLearn more about Tasha Hunter MSW, LCSW:WebsiteInstagram: @tashahunterlcswWhat Children RememberShe Lives Her TruthWhen We Speak PodcastLearn more about Rebecca:rebeccaching.comWork With RebeccaSign up for the weekly Unburdened Leader EmailResources:How to Make Yourself an Unsafe PersonWe Should All Be Millionaires: A Woman's Guide to Earning More, Building Wealth, and Gaining Economic Power, Rachel RodgersAll These Rivers and You Chose Love, Jaiya JohnThe Altar Within: A Radical Devotional Guide to Liberate the Divine Self, Juliet Diaz"Be Easy," Alice Smith

We Should All Be Millionaires: A Woman's Guide to Earning More, Building Wealth and Gaining Economic Power Author: Rachel Rodgers EP. 71: Delegate it, sis What'd Up Crew? What's good? Who Gon' Check Me Boo?! God is! I believe the hardest thing for us to do is look beyond the now. Whispers of Hope 366 Devotional Journal Day 10: Beyond the NOW “Your own feelings and circumstances should never be the yardstick against which you measure how far God is from you.” “Don't let your troubles make you decide that He has forgotten you, because God will never forsake you in difficult times.” “The Bible tells us that not even dire circumstances can ever separate us from Him. (Rom 8:31-39)” I will add even if we put ourselves there. “We are so important that God sent His spirit to transform us into permanent dwellings for the ALMIGHTY. Chapter 9: Million Dollar Team “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much more.” -Helen Keller • She opens with this chapter discussing John Legend & Chrissy Teigen how they had a nice life with staffing. Pg. 169-170 • Don't let that Jealous feeling or that hating spirit get the best of you. Pg.171 • I have already told you all the first staff person I am hiring in my home is personal chef. This part of the Ch. Had me cracking up…pg. 171 Now this is a question I have for you. I mean Racheal and I have for you. Pg.173-176 How you financially rich but emotional broke? And can money buy happiness? For my entrepreneurs she discusses what to do after you hire your first assistant. She gave 25 things you can delegate to your personal assistant immediately. If you want that list just email me @thecrewbookclub@gmail.com subject personal assistant. I want to spend time discussing delegation. Which I think is a major struggle for a lot for me and you. Racheal says on pg. 166 This is one of favorite parts of the chapter because it just shows it levels to this. And after taking some assessments I realize I need to follow the processes even closer. Pg.187-188 Now this is typically where you and I get in our heads and sabotage ourselves. pg. 189-196 The challenge of the week Delegate a task It could be anything: If you are a parent delegate a task to your kiddo that you know good darn well, they can handle. If you are a wife delegate/communicate with your husband I need you can you do this… If you have an assistant and there is a task you know they should be doing it and you won't give it up because they don't do like you. Delegate it. Maybe you are a manager and not delegating task to employees you know it's in their job description, but you don't want conflict. Delegate it. What Would Crew Do?! Untangling the self-concept of being a "good girl" and why it can hold you back is an important topic that I wanted to share twice. My upcoming book will probably be titled the same as this episode. I'm sharing this episode from last week again because I want you to challenge those long-standing beliefs you may be holding and break free to create that fulfilling and purposeful life you deserve. I hope you enjoy this encore episode because it's time to stop pleasing others and start making progress toward your own goals. Don't let the “good girl” in you hold you back. It's time to be a little bad, even dangerous! Break those limiting beliefs and take the limits off your dreams. Trust me. It's worth it. Your future you will thank you! Episode Highlights: [03:22] Part of upgrading and elevating your self-concept includes the undoing of the cultural indoctrination of the good girl. [03:45] I'm writing a book that will probably have the same name as this podcast. One of the things that I discuss is this concept of society's good girl. I'm going to read an excerpt from my intro. [05:07] Think about the dream for your life that you wrote out in your homework. Did you think about how you would be viewed by society, family, and friends? Does your role and position as a woman prevent you from achieving your dream? [07:13] Are you people-pleasing, pushing down your dreams, and creating boundaries? Treading water is expending effort to maintain one's status, but doesn't make much progress towards a goal. [08:02] It's time to unravel that societal programming that tells us our dreams are only partially possible. [08:25] Look at your dreams and see where the good girl in you is holding you back. [10:40] Look at these thoughts that are holding you back. See them and know that they are optional. [11:03] What would you do if you were a bad girl? What would you do if you were a dangerous woman? [11:52] Go back to your homework and look for those thoughts that tell you why you can't fulfill your dreams. Find those thoughts that are holding you captive. [13:30] Beliefs holding you back whether positive or negative are all under review here. Go back to the scenario in those four areas and take the limits off. [14:22] If you do this work up front, it makes things so much better when you start creating your dream life. She's a Hong Kong-born, Canadian- raised, cis-gendered single woman who's spent her whole life trying to meet other people's standards instead of figuring out what she wants. It's time to untangle that self-concept of being a good girl and how it could be holding you back from doing and being who you are called to be. Last week in episode 35, I gave you some homework we will use for this episode. If you haven't listened to that episode, go back and do so. We're going to talk about how the good girl mentality is likely stopping you from having the life you dream of. We're going to talk about how to uncover hidden dreams, so you can start taking the first steps towards creating the life you want to live. A life that feels fulfilling and purposeful. A life that you really love. You might feel a little exposed if you did your homework last episode. You might feel like you're seeing yourself for the first time. You've challenged some of those long-standing beliefs about yourself, and now you have a new vision for yourself. We need to solidify your new vision. You spent years building those old thoughts and beliefs, and we don't want those beliefs creeping back in and holding you back. I'm chatting with singer/songwriter and long-time activist Elaine Romanelli about easy ways to make activism a part of your everyday life. No, you don't have to march on Washington, if that's not your thing! Elaine explains how activism is like a pedicure. You can get by and just cut your nails, or you can go for the full spa treatment and totally nourish yourself. Take a listen to find out what she means! As an entrepreneur herself, Elaine talks about how important it is to outsource as much as you can in both your business and your daily life. She discusses self-care and “other-care”—not where we're taking care of others, but rather where we have other people take care of us. Imagine that! We discuss how exhausted everyone is from the constant barrage of bad news, where this thing doesn't get reported because it's not as “bad” as that thing. And we chat about developing a system of replenishment, in contrast to the usual escapism that ends up depleting us even more. Elaine wants organizations, politicians, and us to stop thinking of activism as an emergency situation because it's something we have to be in for the long haul. Thus the focus of this episode: Finding easy ways to build activism into your daily life… in a way that fills you up rather than dragging you down. — Links mentioned in the episode: Find Elaine at http://www.elaineromanelli.com (http://www.elaineromanelli.com) Contact Elaine at elaine@elaineromanelli.com Postcards to Voters — https://postcardstovoters.org (https://postcardstovoters.org) Swing Left — https://swingleft.org (https://swingleft.org) https://www.amazon.com/We-Should-All-Be-Millionaires-ebook/dp/B08BYYMZG3/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=we+should+all+be+millionaires+rachel+rodgers&qid=1659923963&sprefix=we+should,aps,150&sr=8-1 (We Should All Be Millionaires: A Woman's Guide to Earning More, Building Wealth, and Gaining Economic Power) by Rachel Rodgers https://www.angelakellysmith.com/podcast/elaine-romanelli-easy-steps-for-everyday-activism (Link to this episode) — Join the Women Podcasters Academy at http://womenpodcastersacademy.com (womenpodcastersacademy.com) For information on website design and marketing services, visit http://angelakellysmith.com (angelakellysmith.com) Contact Kelly at hello@angelakellysmith.com Save 50% with http://share.honeybook.com/angelakellysmith (Honeybook) Music by Gvidon Mentioned in this episode: The Podcast Launch Playbook -- If you've been thinking about starting your own podcast, The Podcast Launch Playbook will help you do it—step-by-step, super-simple, exactly what you need to go from idea to launch! Episode #16 of the Diving for Pearls podcast has officially launched!!! In this episode, I sit down with Mayowa Adegoke, a foreign correspondent for Channels TV, one of Africa's leading news stations, to discuss the issues that Nigeria and the rest of world must address, from building trust & fostering collaboration to prioritizing education & embracing innovation, in order to move towards a more equitable and sustainable path. With a push for greater transparency and accountability on the part of those charged with governance, Mayowa believes that stability and prosperity can be achieved throughout Nigeria and the rest of the Africa continent. Moving from the old, tired, oversimplistic narrative of Africa to a more balanced and hopeful one, according to Mayowa, will ultimately require a change in thinking, culture and ethos. Adamant about shifting and reframing the African narrative, Mayowa takes an intentional approach to sharing good news stories, and challenges media personnel and others to utilize their platform to keep conversations oriented in a positive direction, so as to influence, uplift and empower.Growing up in a country that has the largest economy in Africa, Mayowa was surrounded with a strong familial support system that enabled her to embrace the indefatigable “can do” spirit of Nigeria, an optimistic spirit that has sustained Nigerians for generations upon generations. Mayowa credits both of her parents for believing in her dreams and modeling persistence at an early age. As a result of their immense belief in her and her capabilities, Mayowa was able to define her worth and nurture the seeds of self-confidence in others. Mayowa, who is a champion of female empowerment, challenges women to channel the power of collaboration to be more forward-thinking, more solution-focused and take greater control of their lives. As someone who has always embraced authenticity in business and in life, Mayowa stresses the importance of living in alignment with one's personal truths. She challenges us to own who we are in order to be more deeply connected to our natural abilities, strengths, and talents and live a richer, more complete life. Please subscribe to the Diving for Pearls podcast on Apple, Spotify, Patreon, iHeart and wherever you listen to podcasts and please rate and review. It seems that everyone is talking about data literacy today. CDOs position literacy among their top priorities and for many organizations, it is one of their most pressing needs. But, how do you actually create data literacy? What's the best approach? How do you get started? In this episode, Cassidy chats with Valerie Logan, CEO & Found er at THE DATA LODGE , about her pragmatic approach to teaching and promoting data literacy within your organization. Valerie is on a mission to train and certify the world's first data literacy program leads across the globe… from her house in the woods. This mission led her to start THE DATA LODGE — a virtual home for growing data literacy, where she leads bootcamps and keeps a resource library for data literacy advocates. Before that, Valerie was a VP at Gartner, where she led their Data & Analytics Group and brought to market the idea of Information as a Second Language (ISL). She has also been a leader at companies like HP, Knightsbridge Solutions, and IBM. As a researcher, she focuses on the area of emerging leadership models, including the role of the Chief Data Officer (CDO). We discuss: The origin and framework of THE DATA LODGE Valerie's teaching & program methodology How to define data literacy Three elements that make up data literacy: mindset, language, and skills ISL and mastering the VIA model The signs & symptoms of a lack of data literacy How executives can model the way & advocate for data literacy Why data literacy is one of the biggest invisible problems out there Check out these resources we mentioned during the podcast: We Should All Be Millionaires: A Woman's Guide To Earning More, Building Wealth, and Gaining Economic Power by Rachel Rodgers If you want to hear more, subscribe to Leading with Data on Apple Podcasts , Spotify , or here . Recently I was listening to Rachel Rodgers' audiobook, "We Should All Be Millionaires: A Woman's Guide to Earning More, Building Wealth, and Gaining Economic Power" and was inspired to do her $10k in 10 days challenge. This peaked my interested because I am working on a goal of $30,000 months in my business. I encourage you to look at your financial goals - income, retirement, vacations, etc. and what does that look like per day, week, month, etc. What may seem like a lot of money per month may not be as much as you think once you subtract expenses, taxes and savings. To break down my $10k in 10 Days Challenge, I ended with $9,741. Here's how I did it: My first few offers were not a hit which was scary at first. Then I got the idea for a new offer: LLC in a day. An offer is anything that you are selling and I decided to sell a 1:1 session with me to get you completely set up with your LLC. I put that out there via my email list. It's $1,000 and I booked 2. A couple days in I reevaluated, I thought LLC in a day would be my ticket to $10k. I revisited the idea and offered Tax in a Day. This includes calculating your quarterly taxes, figuring out what you should be paying yourself, setting up a system for all of this. It's the money side of the business. I put this out and got a lot more interest. I had 5 people sign up for this at a rate of $1,000. This brought in an additional $5,000 bringing us to $7,000 The additional $2.741 came from 1:1 hour-long strategy sessions, my online course sales and my alumni membership. My biggest takeaway was that people want to get things done quickly when it comes to legal and tax stuff which is why my tax/LLC in a day was so popular. This does present a challenge for me because I want everyone to be able to maintain these aspects of their business moving forward. These 6 hour VIP days are going to stick around so if you missed it, don't worry, you can still book! I'm going to start them at $2,000 with four slots a month and it will cover tax and legal in the session. The other idea I had was offering a VIP day for brand new business owners. This is tricky because for some, they've set aside money to start the business and spend money on services like this, for others, this is a lot trickier. If you're interested in trying this with a group VIP day, send me an Instagram DM today because I am starting this on August 17.

“We see the wound, we see how it got there, now the next thing to ask is how do I heal the wound, how do I stitch it up?” - Leslieann Hobayan Today's episode is centered around racial trauma. What does it look like? How does it show up in our lives? How are we affected by the deeply ingrained racism of today's society? For many of us, people-pleasing or looming fears can be the results of this trauma. We can see it in the small acts of racism many people of color are subjected to daily, and we can see it in the long-term mindsets that we carry as the result of feeling the need to prove that we are equal. Listen along as we discuss how racial trauma is translated into our lives and how we can begin to acknowledge and heal through awareness. * WRITE IN RITUAL Retreat is approaching fast!
