IN THIS MESSAGE JONATHON EDWARDS MAKES IT ABUNDANTLY CLEAR THAT THE NEW CREATION IS NOT A TWEAKED NATURAL MAN , BUT A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CREATURE WITH ITS OWN SET OF UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS: JUST AS A DOG AND CAT HAVE SOME SIMILARITIES, BOTH HAVE PAWS AND FUR, YET COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CREATURES, WITH DIFFERENT IMBRED ABILITIES, PERSONALITIES, & MANY OTHER DISTINGUISHABLE PECULIARITIES, & SUBTLETIES: UNDER THE HOOD THEY ARE DISTINCT CREATURES, POLES APART, AND LIKEWISE ARE WE AS TWEAKED NATURAL MAN AMERICANS, ARE POLES APRT FROM WE WHO ARE SPIRITUAL NEW CREATIONS. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? WE AS AMERICANS MUST COME TO REALIZE THAT SATAN IS THE ULTIMATE COUNTERFEITER, OFFERING US TO BE A TWEAKED NATURAL MAN BY OFFERING US A FASTFOOD FREEWILL JESUS, WHO MAY HELP US PULL OUT OF THE POLLUTIONS OF THE WORLD, BUT SATAN WANTS US IGNORANT OF THE FACT THAT THERE IS A BONDAGE OF THE WILL JESUS, IN WHICH WE MUST WAIT ON OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN TO REVEAL THE TRUE JESUS TO US, WHEREIN WE ARE NOW MADE A NEW AMERICAN SPIRITUAL MAN WHICH UNDER THE HOOD HAS CHARACTERS 100% DISTINGUISHABLE FROM OUR NATURAL MAN CHARACTERISTICS. LET US TAKE A FEW EXCEPTS FROM JONATHON EDWARDS SERMON:The SPIRIT of GOD acts in a VERY DIFFERENT manner in the one case from what he doth in the other. He may indeed act upon the mind of a natural man, BUT he acts in the mind of a SAINT as an INDWELLING VITAL PRINCIPAL. He ACTS upon the mind of an UNREGENERATE person as an EXTRINSIC , OCCASIONAL AGENT; for in acting upon them, he doth NOT UNITE himself to them; notwithstanding all his influences that they may be the subjects of, they are still sensual, having not the Spirit, Jude 19. But he unites himself with the mind of a saint, takes him for his temple, actuates and influences him as a new, supernatural principle of life and action. There is this difference, that the Spirit of God, in acting in the soul of a godly man, exerts and communicates himself there in his own proper nature. Holiness is the proper nature of the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit operates in the minds of the godly by uniting himself to them, and living in them, and exerting his own nature in the exercise of their faculties. The Spirit of God may act upon a creature, and yet not in acting communicate himself. The Spirit of God may act upon inanimate creatures; as the Spirit moved upon the face of the waters in the beginning of the creation;[Pg 26] so the Spirit of God may act upon the minds of men many ways, and communicate himself no more than when he acts upon an inanimate creature. For instance, he may excite thoughts in them, may assist their natural reason and understanding, or may assist other natural principles, and this without any union with the soul, but may act, as it were, as upon an external object. But as he acts in his holy influences and spiritual operations, he acts in a way of peculiar communication of himself; so that the subject is thence denominated spiritual. This spiritual light primarily consists in the former of these, viz., a real sense and apprehension of the divine excellency of things revealed in the word of God. A spiritual and saving conviction of the truth and reality of these things arises from such a sight of their divine excellency and glory; This light, and this only, has its fruit in an universal holiness of life. No merely notional or speculative understanding of the doctrines of religion will ever bring to this. But this light, as it reaches the bottom of the heart, and changes the nature, so it will effectually dispose to an universal obedience. It shows God's worthiness to be obeyed and served. It draws forth the heart in a sincere love to God, which is the only principle of a true, gracious and universal obedience. And it convinces of the reality of those glorious rewards that God has promised to them that obey him.

During this special four-part series, we go on a fascinating journey into . Part 3 of 4: Dr. Chantel Prat: How To Kill Curiosity . The Neuroscience of You with Professor Chantel Prat . What makes us who we are? More specifically, at a neuroscience level, are we all the same, or, is every brain wired differently? What does that mean in the context of our behaviors?   . To answer these questions and a whole lot more, I've invited a brilliant neuroscientist and a fabulous human being to join me as we dismantle The Neuroscience of You. . Dr. Chantel Prat is a Psychology, Neuroscience, and Linguistics Professor at the University of Washington. Her debut book, The Neuroscience of You, summarizes her research investigating how variable brain designs combine with our lifetime of experiences to shape the unique way each person understands the world and operates in it.  . Professor Prat received a Pathway to Independence Award from the National Institute of Health, and her book was nominated for a Washington State Book Award. The Neuroscience of You was featured in The Next Big Idea Club. Her research has also been featured in various media, ranging from Nature and Scientific American to Rolling Stone and Popular Mechanics. . WEBSITE:  https://www.chantelprat.com . Episode 119. In today's solo episode, I'm going to share some of what I've learned about IFS and how it works based on both my personal and professional experiences thus far. I'm also going to talk about learning to slow down, how it's a journey I'm still on, and how IFS helps me actually do it, specifically focusing on my example of my Overworking Part, which I learned as I talked through this episode is very linked with my "Optimizing my Experience" Part (also described in my episode with Randi Rubenstein). In this episode I share my process of recognizing my Overworking/Optimizing Parts, appreciating them, and helping to do things (like record this episode for you!) from a more embodied and grounded place. In the middle of the episode, I lead you through an IFS based meditation to get to know a Protector Part of yours, Overworking Part or otherwise. Then I cover 3 of the main lessons I've learned from experiencing IFS. Without further ado, let's dive in! But First, Words of Wisdom “Compassion as a spontaneous aspect of Self blew my mind, because I'd always assumed and learned that compassion was something you had to develop. There's this idea—especially in some spiritual circles—that you have to build up the muscle of compassion over time, because it's not inherent. Again, that's the negative view on human nature at play. To be clear, what I mean by compassion is the ability to be in Self with somebody when they're really hurting and feel for them, but not be overwhelmed by their pain. You can only do that if you've done it within yourself. That is, if you can be with your own exiles without blending and being overwhelmed by them and instead show them compassion and help them, then you can do the same for someone in pain who's sitting across from you.”― Richard C. Schwartz, No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model The Top 3 Lessons I Have Learned Through Experiencing IFS Cognitive Self-Compassion is Very Different Than Heart Self Compassion. It's totally different. And I was definitely always practicing the cognitive type. This really came to light for me when I talked with Dr. Allyn Richards in episode 108 (you can listen here). We both experienced compassion for ourselves by practicing IFS in a way that was totally different than anything we've tried to do in the past. You Have to Life it to Give It. Hearing this always felt annoying to me. But also so true. I always heard that you shouldn't teach meditation if you don't have a meditation practice. Well, I occasionally taught it, but I definitely didn't have a practice. Talking About Parts is Very Different than Talking to and Building a Relationship with Parts. One of my trainers in my Level 1 mentioned that she often sees therapists saying they are doing IFS, when really they are talking about parts with clients, which can be helpful. Many of us, therapists especially, have developing amazing conceptualization and analyzing parts that helped us a TON. And also, they are still parts. When you truly build a relationship with and honor these parts, new levels of healing and embodiment open up, likely that you didn't believe were truly possible. Wanting more support beyond these podcasts? I am currently accepting new therapy clients if you live in one of these 40 states in the US My rate for an intake session is $220 and for a 45 minute follow up is $195 If interested in learning more, including my availability and details about my practice, email me at info@drshawnhondorp.com or call 616-227-0001 Or if you are a therapist of helping professional looking to connect in community and learn more about or experience the IFS model, get on my email list here and/or email me at info@drshawnhondorp.com to introduce yourself! We may be starting another IFS based community group soon. “I know I shouldn't focus on weight loss, but…” (Polarized Parts Alert!)

Twist! I reached into my archives for this, friends. Back in the day, I interviewed these three iconic women: Uma Thurman (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid's Tale, Mad Men) and Kristin Chenoweth (Glee, Pushing Daisies). These were VERY DIFFERENT interviews from my podcast talks because (a) back then, I was primarily a writer and a therapist, (b) I was only beginning to develop my interviewing style, (c) they were for written articles, or profiles, for magazines, so the purpose was different, and (d) I didn't have actual podcasting equipment yet; just a tiny microrecorder (which wasn't a match for the loud restaurant where I met Elisabeth Moss, unfortunately). The Everyday Astrology Podcast

Wednesday March 2, 2022 A potent New moon in compassionate Pisces wakes up our hearts. Jupiter is multiplying the effects of Everything. Is this an exaggeration? We have important planets all joining forces in controlling Capricorn. Our thoughts are serious. They are Long term. Change is all we can count on. Hold the light. There is potent seriousness to what is going on now. Beginnings and endings are materializing all around us. The lineup of important planets in Capricorn are highlighting the blessing or the curse. Or both. This New Moon in Pisces is the last of the winter moons. We have a chance to get still and retreat to the depths within to find meaning. Our instincts and imagination are powerful allies now. Take time to rest. Leave space for the flow of your own Natural energy. Pieces can hit us with overwhelm, confusion, escapism, entity attachments and lack of discernment if we are not conscious. Connected to this moon is far reaching Jupiter seeking truth, freedom, justice, and higher order. This energy blesses us with curiosity and kind heartedness. We want to grow, expand, evolve and be free. Jupiter is our fortune. We strike gold. We are laying a new foundation but the ground is not yet stable. Be patient. Mercury and Saturn are joining forces in Aquarius which impulses us with out of the box ideas. These energies are working to uplift the people on one hand. On another the internet of things can use this same energy to control the people. How can you tap into your Original genius? How can you utilize the technology for your own growth? Uranus is in a helpful connection to this big hearted full moon. This is a great energy to Help us move forward. We must unstuck ourselves from whatever hinders us being our true and Total selves. Just a simple shift in perspective can change your world. Uranus loves to show us out of this world Possibilities. We can download the new program. Is this a simulation? Are we in the Matrix? Uranus can show us the truth. “The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.” Carl Jung Thursday is a big heavy plutonian day. Warrior Mars, harmony seeking Venus and Pluto are sharing space at the end of Capricorn. This is called a stellium. Everything is focused in one area. Each of us has this mash up in our charts somewhere. And it's likely been hard work, Saturn style. Capricorn rules our systems, governments, hierarchy and legacy. Our Inherited family dysfunction would fall under Capricorn. Aches and pains In bones and teeth. Our knees are particularly vulnerable now. What are you choosing to build now? What will you let go? This fertile ground. Saturday is another big day with Jupiter and the Sun meeting for the first time in Pisces in 12 years. What were you doing 12 years ago? Our make reality real ability is strong now. What will you be creating? In what area can you grow and expand? How are your dreams trying to inform you? Venus and Mars are arm and arm moving into Aquarius this day. This is a lighter energy. It goes from ponderous burdensome earth to electric revolutionary freedom seeking Air. Very Different feel. Keep grounded. You might be more aware of humming and buzzing in your body while you calibrate this new influx of energy. Sunday is tricky too. You may feel stubborn. You want it all to just stop changing so fast. Everything is so demanding. Part of you wants luxury stillness and predictability and the other part is bored and needs to shake things up for the sake of your evolution. Be sure to plant your seeds on this new moon Wednesday and Thursday for best results We are about to enter the very fast growing season of spring. Use this last few weeks to go within. "15 years ago I was admitted to the Mount Carmel Cardiac center, because I couldn't breath and my legs had ballooned up to 5 times the normal size! I was a chain smoker at just over 3 packs a day! A Alcoholic, and Drug abuser , opiate pain pills my poison of choice, I was in a horrible Marriage and when I was admitted to the cardiac care center I tipped the scales at 420 lbs! My Life wasn't in a very hopeful or promising place! That day in the cardiac unit my diagnosis wasnt full of hope and promise either, Congestive heart failure, caused by pulmonary edema and a lower aeo itrtic heart aneurysm! The Doctors said not only was I so sick, I wouldn't ever work again, my chances of survival were grim and at best I would be on Oxygen 24-7 and need a literal bag of medicine to just keep me alive! I was 40 years old! My Health would improve slightly then back slide horribly when I would let my guard down basically when I would stop listening to the medical team trying to keep me alive! Soon I was back visiting all my old Demons and they remembered me well! Like best friends at a highschool reunion ,Whiskey Pain pills , and Lots of Junk food! I was already a type 2 Diabetic taking 2 different pills in a attempt to control my blood sugar, I remember one time going to the Doctor for a monthly check up after a Night of drinking Whiskey mixed with a few percocet and getting a blood sugar reading of nearly 400! If you don't know, normal sugar levels are 100 or less! I remember acting shocked telling the Doctor this makes no sense I have been eating healthy and trying to exercise by walking , my acting wasn't so good he wasn't buying my BS, I was sent home with a prescription for insulin and trulicity both self injectable medicine's! My Life was in a pretty Dark and miserable place like I said earlier not much hope! That was then , this is now! my life is so Very Different now I hardly recognize it! Drugs and Alcohol Gone! Cigarettes long Gone! Poor Health Gone! Bad Marriage Oh Yeah! Gone! This is me now! At 55, I am an Athletic Beast healthier and stronger than most 30 year olds! IntroductionWe are in the book of John so open your Bibles to John chapter 4. Many of you know that we have a youth ministry here that has been artfully named. And it’s being led by our faithful youth and family pastor Trent Houck who we know and love. Last last week I inadvertently offended a certain unnamed group in the room. I was summarizing Jesus’ interaction with the woman at the well and I said, “Jesus saves by eliminating thirst.” And I could see Trent’s eyebrow raise from 30 rows back. There are certain words in the English language that carry ambiguity. In fact, oddly, some of the most confusing words are the ones we use most often. Today we are going to look at the word ‘believe.’ We owe it to ourselves to dig into this word for two reasons: 1. Because it features in our text largely and 2. Because it is the key word in John’s purpose statement. You should know John’s purpose by now.And so the goal of today’s message is to get you to understand, through the story of the nobleman’s son, the nature of LIFE-GIVING belief. Because what we will soon discover is that there is a kind of BELIEF that changes a person and gives them everlasting life and a kind of BELIEF that produces no change whatsoever. What’s the difference? So let’s setup the narrative this morning. Last week we left off with the woman at the well running back into town coming unglued with excitement. She was sharing with everyone that she had discovered Messiah. She was so enamored and compelled. Her zeal was spilling over and it was contagious. Because of this woman’s testimony, Jesus was asked by the Samaritans to stay in their city two days longer. And the passage closed out with these words. And the thing we are to derive from the text is that many believed as a result of his WORDS. That is a key observation. They believed his words in CONTRAST to what? To miracles. See, no miracle was performed here in the strict sense of things. They didn’t believe because of what they saw, they believed because of what they heard. That’s key because we are getting setup here for a comparison. Look at what comes next. Now this is a confusing text. There are about ten different ways to read this paragraph here. And in order to understand the confusion and the solution, we need a little bit of a geography lesson. I’ve got a map here and the Scripture text on the right hand side that I’ll add phrase by phrase. Let’s start out with where Jesus has been.So in Jesus day, just like our day, there are towns and there are regions. We are in the region of Idaho, town of Boise, Samaria is the region in (the yellow box); Sychar is the town in that region (red circle) where Jesus met the woman at the well.So the text begins by saying that after two days he departed for Galilee.Galilee is a region. That’s the yellow square here. We haven’t yet been told what city he is going to. So far so good. Now the confusing part starts here. It begins with the word ‘for’ which indicates reason. Why did Jesus go to Galilee? The text answers: for Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometowns. That’s the stated reason. What is the name of Jesus’ hometown? Nazareth. Where is Nazareth? It’s right here with the green circle. Now you see the problem?Jesus is departing from Samaria where he was accepted to purposely go to a region that contained his hometown, where he was rejected. While a bit odd, that wouldn’t be too uncharacteristic of Jesus. We have precedent for Jesus walking into trouble. Except it then says:“So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast. For they too had gone to the feast.” So it turns out he wasn’t rejected at all. He was welcomed. And then it concludes by telling us what specific region of Galilee he was visiting, “Thus, he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine.” That’s the blue circle here. Now what’s going on here? I know this sounds technical but try to follow along because the entire text we are going to study today hinges on you understanding the BELIEF dynamic at stake in these two different regions. What’s going on here is that John, very masterfully, is demonstrating two VERY DIFFERENT types of belief. In Samaria, Jesus has just enjoyed his first unqualified, unopposed, and open-hearted reception. The woman said to Jesus, “I know that when Messiah comes he will tell us everything.” And Jesus says, “I who speak to you am he.” And the woman receives it, just like that. Then she runs into the town. And the text says that many in the town believed on him and confessed, “This, indeed, is the Savior of the World.” Now note. No miracles done here. He just speaks to them. They listen. They receive. So that was his reception in Samaria. The fields were white for harvest. So now he’s leaving Samaritan soil and entering the region of Galilee which is Jewish soil. Jesus says, when it comes to my own people there is a very different response, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown.” he’s essential saying, “when I go home, I’ll be rejected.” Now the text says that when he arrived at Galilee they welcomed him. But let’s read that correctly. How did they welcome him? As Messiah? As the Savior of the world? Not so fast. Their welcome was superficial at best. Now how do we know this? Two reasons: First, the text very specifically references the fact that their introduction to this miracle worker was in Jerusalem just a few weeks earlier. They were with Jesus when he overturned the money changer’s tables. They saw his miracle working ability put on display. But do you remember how Jesus felt when THESE VERY SAME PEOPLE, just a few weeks earlier, cheered him on as a miracle worker and celebrated his politically scandalous table turning?Does that sound like a belief that is being commended? Does that sound like saving belief? No. This is shallow and superficial. What does this right of the bat tell you? Here it is; don’t miss this. Not all belief is the same. On the surface, the Samaritans accepted, welcomed, and believed in Jesus. On the surface, the Galileans accepted, welcomed, and believed in Jesus. And they could not be more different. One leads to eternal life. One leads to eternal death. What’s the difference? Now the second reason we know that the Galilean welcome was superficial is the way that Jesus responds in the text we are going to study today. So let’s keep reading. And as we do we are going to observe the nature of belief that leads to life first by contrasting belief with unbelief. Here’s the question? What is the nature of this Galilean believing unbelief? We are introduced to a man who has believing unbelief. Here we have a nobleman who lives in Capernaum, and he approaches Jesus with a personal problem: his son is ill.Capernaum is to Cana as Nampa is to Boise. These are just neighboring towns in the region of Galilee. So this man is close enough that he can journey to see him. The fact that he’s a nobleman, means he was wealthy, he had means, he had climbed the social ladder, he had political connections, and he was someone of importance and influence. Capernaum is about 16 miles away from where Jesus is, so it’s a day’s journey. He’s trying to fetch Jesus in hopes that he would heal his fevered son.Now you can imagine what his son would have looked like to move his father to action. Shallow breath, burning fever, listless, weak pulse, hasn’t eaten for two weeks, hasn’t drank for three days, lips cracked, and won’t respond to stimulus. What would you do? There’s no ER. No blood tests. No IV. This man’s desperate, so he hears about this miracle worker and in desperation he seeks him out. You can imagine him walking those 16 miles and the whole time his hope is increasingly concentrating on Jesus. Jesus is really his only hope at this point. Time is running out. So he gets to Cana and he’s tired and he finally sees him. And his eyes light up. He runs up to Jesus and says, “Jesus, you don’t know me from Adam, but I’m begging you. Please, heal my son!”Now that feels straight up stone cold. What is Jesus saying here? In the Greek, the rebuke is in the plural. He’s speaking to a larger group. He’s rebuking the Galileans for making signs and wonders a prerequisite for belief. Yes, the Galileans were welcoming, but their welcoming was dependent on miracles unlike the faith of the Samaritans! Somehow, Jesus detects in the royal official a ‘belief’ that desires a cure but that does not truly desire him. It’s believing unbelief. Now let’s get detailed here. What is wrong with this? Is it wrong to ask Jesus to heal his son? Let’s say he was asking for a sign? Is that entirely wrong? Does asking for a sign mean that I have Galilean believing unbelief? Isn’t it good to be skeptical of giant claims? If a guy shows up at my door and says he’s from the FBI, is it wrong of me to ask to see a badge? Jesus claimed to be Messiah. Where’s the badge? Aren’t signs and wonders kind of the badge? Absolutely! The badge of Messiah is signs and wonders. Jesus himself appeals to his miracle working ability as evidence that he is who he claims to be.He says it again later in chapter 14.So Jesus himself says one of the reasons he does miracles is to prove to you that he is Messiah. But there is a sense in which too much interest in the raw miracles themselves is spiritually dangerous. There can be a delight in miracles that tries to detach the miracle from the miracle worker. I want the benefits of Jesus without Jesus himself. Probably the best place to illustrate this is in Matthew 11.Do you remember when John the Baptist was in prison and he asked his disciples, "Go seek out Jesus and when you get to him ask him this:“You are questioning me as Messiah not because you don’t have enough evidence. You have plenty of evidence. You just don’t like what I represent. John, when you follow me, you follow along a road of suffering. You don’t like the outcome, so you begin to question me.”It’s okay to need a miracle. The proof of Jesus as Messiah is his miracles. That is true. That is okay. But here’s what’s NOT okay: to see the miracle and love what he does, but hear his words and hate was he says. The miracles are arrows that point to the miracle worker. When Jesus heals a lame man, that’s supposed to get your attention. Whatever comes out of that guys mouth next, is going straight into my heart. What you see with your eyes is supposed to direct you to listen with your ears. But many just wanted Jesus for his bag of cool tricks. There is a type of belief, trust, and faith that wants to be selective. When it benefits me, I’m all in. I’m a believer. I’m a follower. But when I don’t like it, I’ll take a step back. I want to be selective. It’s what we see in popular faith. I’ll take a little bit of the world’s view of sex, entertainment and materialism and a bit of God’s healing of my cancer and the heaven part. But when it offends me, I’m ready to throw in the towel. When it offends me, I’m ready to part ways.Jesus looks at that and says, “It’s all are nothing, friend.” He was beginning to detect in the crowds a fickleness of belief. We are going to see this big time when we get to John chapter 6. None of this believing unbelief. None of this selective Christianity stuff. Not all belief is created equal. There’s Samaritan belief and then theirs Galilean belief. There’s belief and then there is believing unbelief.Belief ChallengedNow let’s see what happens next. So the nobleman says, “Come, please heal my child.” And Jesus says, “Unless you see a sign you won’t believe.” Now look at how the nobleman responds when he hears this. Belief? What does this have to do with belief? He just wants his son healed. He basically completely and totally ignores what Jesus says. The nobleman looks at Jesus and says, “Man, we don’t have time for this.”The nobleman is not addressing Jesus as Messiah, Son of God. It’s just ‘sir.’ He’s approaching Jesus out of the desperation of need, but with little thought as to who Jesus is or claims to be. He’s approaching Jesus the way a man would approach a genie in the bottle. I don’t know how the genie works, but if it can grant me my wish, great! The nobleman is just throwing darts in desperation. He’s out of options. It could have been a witchdoctor, a fortune teller, Buddha, Krishna. If there was any hope, he was going to try it. The official heard that Jesus can perform miracles, and that rumor of power holds out hope for his son.But Jesus won’t let it stand there. What Jesus does next is genius. It’s pure genius. Put yourself in Jesus’ shoes. If you’re Jesus and someone comes to you with genie-in-a-bottle belief asking you to heal his son, what would you do? You’ve got two options. Your first option is this: heal the son with a hope that the healing would cause true belief. But there’s a problem with that, isn’t there? If you heal the son, there’s a danger that the guy just gets what he wants and walks away. He just used you! This is the Galilean belief. This is the shallow belief. There’s an incredible danger that this type of miracle working stunt will just produce believing unbelief. So what’s your other option? You could make true belief a prerequisite for healing the son. I won’t heal your son unless you truly believe. What’s the problem with that? If you make true belief a prerequisite for healing, the man’s skepticism and unbelief will prevent him from ever seeing the power of God. This in and of itself produces unbelief. So what does Jesus do? He does neither. Look what he does.Jesus confronts him with claims of power. He confronts his unbelief with claims of power. I am God. This is not a problem for me. Go. There is mercy. His son is healed. But it can’t be verified. His son is 16 miles away. He can’t just call up his wife on the cell phone and see if Jesus is a truth teller. And Jesus is forcing him into a corner. Do you believe my claim? Jesus forces the nobleman into a situation where he cannot believe on the basis of what he sees; he must believe on the basis of what Jesus says. The audacity of the claim is pretty significant. If you were the nobleman, you’d be like, “That’s it? You didn’t have to open up your book of incantations. There’s no sweat. There’s no working up of a storm of words. There’s no getting the spell just right and summoning seldom accessed recesses of power. You didn’t even come to my house.” The reason it’s so compelling is because it’s so audacious. He is the Creator. He created. He keeps the world together with a word of his power. He is almighty. He is omnipotent. So if he really is who he says he is, then I guess that would be no problem for him. Jesus confronts unbelief with CLAIMS OF POWER. He simply says, go. And the text says that he believed him.You see, this is a good strategy for evangelism. Confront unbelief with the claims of power. If someone says to you, “I would like to believe in God, but the whole business of miracles… man I don’t know. I mean how could a Red Sea part?” You just look at that and say, “If he’s God, and he asks it to part, it better part.”That’s the whole point. What is being claimed here is not that Jesus is a great teacher. What’s being claimed is that he’s God. The nobleman is shocked by the straight-faced nature of the claim and the text says that he believes and he heads home. This guy is either totally insane or he’s the Savior of the World. Who would ever make a claim like that? It’s actually a powerful argument. Now what kind of belief is this? Is this Galilean belief? No. It can’t be. He saw no miracle. He just trusted the word. You see, that is the essence of true belief. Believing the Word of God. This is Samaritan belief. This is belief in who Jesus claims to be. Now look at what happens to this newly minted belief:So the man goes back sees his son full of life, drinking, eating, laughing. And he thinks, it was everything I hoped. And his heart floods with faith. What is the consequence of this kind of belief. Here’s the answer: belief turns into greater belief. Notice that in the text belief is mentioned twice. He believes when he is told his son will live. Then he comes back and sees his son healed. And he believes again. His belief turns into greater belief. Now you may say, well of course it turned into greater belief. He saw the sign. Not so fast. Do miracles always make people believe? Are they a guarantee of belief? Absolutely not. Miracles are like heat from the sun. The change that occurs as a result of that applied heat is a function of the material. A believing heart and an unbelieving heart have different properties and therefore have different responses to the same stimulant. For a believer, the miracles of Jesus are like heat that just soften them. They melt before the sun and they become moldable and usable. For an unbeliever it’s the opposite. The same sun that melts the wax hardens the clay. They become further entrenched, further opposed, more angry, more bitter, more resistant. As proof for this, do you remember when Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead? I mean that’s a pretty legit miracle. You’d think that if any miracle would garner one’s attention and generate belief, it would be raising someone from the dead, but do you remember the reaction? The same sun that melts the wax hardens the clay.Let me give you one more example. Do you remember the story of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16? I’ll just paraphrase here, but the story is of this rich man who is suffering in hell. And the suffering rich man says to Lazarus who is in heaven, “This place is terrible, go back and warn my brothers.” And what does Lazarus say to the rich man? He says, “No, they have Moses and the prophets. The prophets have everything they need in order that they might believe. They are plenty clear. If they want to believe, they can.” And the rich man says, “No, they need a sign. They need proof.” And what does Lazarus say, “If they do not believe Moses and the prophets, then neither will they believe me, even if someone raises from the dead.”You see, this miracle of the healing of the nobleman’s son is an interesting one because it’s really not very conclusive. It’s pretty easy to refute. If I guy had a skeptical disposition, he could easily explain it away. “Well, sure my son got better, but how do I know it was Jesus who made him better? It could very easily have been that he just so happened to get better the same time that Jesus said he would get better. There’s no way to prove absolutely that it was Jesus who healed him. He could have just chalked it up to mystery or chance. He could have healed from natural causes. After all we did give him that bone marrow broth just hours before. He might have finally sweated that thing out. I’m not sure I believe.”Evidence for the believer turns belief into greater belief. That same evidence for the unbeliever turns unbelief to greater unbelief.ApplicationSo I want to ask you, what kind of faith do you have? What kind of belief do you have? When the heat of the evidence of the existence of God lands on your heart, do you melt or harden? Do you look at the complexity of creation and say, “Yeah, there probably is a God out there somewhere, but he needs to prove himself to me.”Superficial, Galilean belief stays at the heart-hardening level of nonthreatening and impersonal. “I believe Jesus is a good teacher. I believe he lived a real life in the 1st century, grew up in Nazareth and had a pretty good sized following. I believe he died a self-sacrificing death on a Roman cross. I believe his life is an excellent example to follow.” That’s superficial, Galilean belief. It believes in Jesus so long as it doesn’t threaten what I love and benefits me. Jesus offers good life tips and he emphasizes great family values. That’s all nonthreatening - impersonal. No demands are made of me.You want to know what this kind of superficial, Galilean believing unbelief leads to? It leads to more unbelief. You can always explain away the evidence. You can always finds holes and loopholes. You never give anything a fair chance because everything is viewed through the eye of suspicion and skepticism which is another way of saying that everything is viewed through the prejudice of wanting to DISBELIEVE.But on the other hand, there is true belief. This is the guy who looks at the complexity of creation and melts. He says, “God, if you control all this with the word of your power, then do with me as you please. You are God and I am not. Who am I to question you? I believe.” You want to know what that kind of belief leads to? More belief. The nobleman believed Jesus in verse 50 when Jesus told him, "Go your son is healed. He committed himself entirely. Then down a couple of verses later when he gets home and sees Jesus actually did heal his son at the moment he spoke, it says he believed. Don’t you see how faith just increases? You move from truth to commitment, and from commitment to more truth, and from truth to more commitment, and so on.Do you know what God wants you to do as a result of being in his Word today? He wants you to believe. Not Galilean believing unbelief, but Samaritan belief. The Texas hold-em kind of belief that goes all in. There are no escape hatches, no pre-nuptial agreements, no back door exit strategies. Jesus wants you to believe who he claims to be, both savior and LORD. King of KINGS. And that has implications. Once believed, you have to go all in with that. Give him your life. Make him Lord of every part of your life.I want to make one final observation here and I hate to even say it. The setting in which this is happening to this man is a setting of suffering. This man comes to Jesus because of suffering. What would possess a man of his stature and royalty to walk 16 miles to see a tradesman? Answer: PAIN.What are you going to do with the pain in your life? Here’s the other side of the coin. We talked about the heat of miracles. The same sun that melts the wax hardens the clay. But here’s something else that is true. Yes, there’s the heat of miracles. But there’s also the heat of trials. And the same thing is true for trials. The same sun that melts the wax hardens the clay. When someone believes Jesus, trials and tragedy push them into Jesus and it produces greater belief. But when someone disbelieves, trails and tragedy repel them away from Jesus and it produces greater unbelief.Where are you going to go with your pain? Can I urge you? Go to Jesus. Flee to him. Run the 16 miles and beg him to heal. And believe whatever he says. After all, he is Lord. He is God. He can heal with a word. He doesn’t have to work up a sweat to solve your situation. It’s not too difficult for him. My friends, he can fix it with a word. Flee to him. And when he says, go, go in faith even though you cannot see with your eyes the outcome he has in store. If we back up and get a wide view of John chapter 4 here’s what we see. We see hurting people drinking from the fountain of living water and living. We see people coming to Jesus with believing hearts and being satisfied. So whether the son is healed on not healed. Whether he fixes the marriage problem or not. Whether he fixes the finance problem or not, we can say, it is well with my soul.I believe that what Jesus says is true and good. I trust him. I can say, it is well with my soul.It is well, because I have drank from the eternal well. I have drank the living waters and am satisfied. So we are going to close by actually singing that song, it is well with my soul. Let’s pray.

Part 2 of our Covid Contiki tour is here! We're continuing our whirlwind trip around the world to see what the data tells us about the relationship between body size and COVID-19. Diet culture is busily creating a narrative that being larger is a huge risk factor for contracting, developing complications, and even dying from the virus, and our BS detectors are UP!  Alongside my fellow travel guides Jess Campbell (nutritionist and medical student) and Fiona Willer (anti-diet dietitian and statistical warrior), we're diving deep into the data to reveal the real picture - and the truth is VERY DIFFERENT from the headlines! In Part 1 we visited China and the USA, and in this episode we're off to France, Italy, and the UK. What we find will blow your mind! This is a MUST LISTEN! CW - this episode discusses severe illness and death, and mentions the "O" word multiple times. If you're finding it all a bit much, wait until you've got some gas in the tank. But if you're ready to get totally fired up about how weight bias is impacting our understanding of this pandemic, let's go!   Shownotes     We’re back, and we’re heading to France! There’s a study out of France that’s again being used to push this idea of BMI being related to not just hospitalisation but seriousness of the COVID19 illness, such as the need for intensive interventions such as ventilation. It’s a small study with the title “Obesity is an independent risk factor for severe COVID 19”. So, it’s upping the ante in this article to claim that body size is an independent risk factor for severity, or how sick you get with COVID 19. The study is of 124 patients who were admitted to the ICU in a hospital in Lille, France. What the New York Times article mentioning this study said was that nearly half of the 124 patients in this study were ‘obese’ (Louise is feeling some fatigue at saying the ‘o’ word). They say that this is twice the obesity rate of a comparison group admitted to ICU for other reasons last year. It also claimed that as people's body weight went up, so did their need for ventilation. Things to look at in this paper - who were the people being admitted? 73% were male, average age 60. The study controlled for age, diabetes and hypertension, but didn’t control for other factors which have been found to be really important here - things like  smoking, cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic respiratory disease. There’s no mention either in this paper of social disadvantage. Lille in France is a working class city with a really high poverty rate, so 1 in 4 people in Lille live below the poverty line. That fact isn’t mentioned anywhere in the paper or in the New York Times article. If you read something about body size and COVID symptom severity, you are not being told the full picture when it comes to health and what impacts on our health and our ability to fight back and recover from an infection which we have no immunity for. Next stop, Italy! Italy has been hit so incredibly hard by COVID, we’re seeing a huge impact there and some horrible statistics on death rates. They’ve managed to get some data together and put out some papers, which is an amazing effort. A paper released recently on the 20th of April 2020 looks at outcomes (deaths) and is pretty heavy-going. It’s a large study, including 21,500 people who died. It digs into the relationship between body weight and death outcomes, seriousness of outcomes, demographics and things like that. Jess takes us through it - this study is of 21,551 COVID deaths, but the data that they had about coexisting conditions was based on a limited sample of 1,890 people. So, that’s the number of people they could access medical files for. We have no idea if what we’re seeing in this paper is actually representative of everyone who dies. There’s a lot of missing data, all we’ve got is 8.7% of the total reported. So, in the total (21,551), 35.5% were female. In the smaller coexisting conditions sample (n=1890), 31.9% were female. 12.2% of those who had died had a BMI of over 30, compared to the general population in Italy where 10.9% have a BMI over 30. They should have age-matched information because we know there’s a linear association between BMI and age through to 70 years. As a comparison, 21.2% of this group has chronic kidney failure, which is way higher than the population prevalence. It’s also notable that prevalence of a BMI over 30 is higher in the cohort of women compared to men, however we see here that men were dying much more frequently than women. If BMI related to increased risk of death, we would see that relationship. We’re not seeing it. Compared with other actual serious conditions like kidney failure and hypertension, heart failure, all of those conditions are a higher prevalence compared to that in the general population in those who died compared to the population prevalence of people with a BMI over 30. The weight relationship here is not even slightly interesting when you compare it with these other conditions. And the difference in gender stands out, which we’re seeing across nearly all of these studies that we’re looking at. Maleness and age. COVID can be caught by anyone, but those who progress to a more severe state are typically male and typically older. Comorbidities of various types can also factor in there. There’s a median of 10 days from onset to death in this study - how horrific. A UK paper we’ll be discussing soon looks at how many people were ambulatory - going about their daily lives without needing assistance or their ability to get around being compromised. 98% of the people in the UK data fell into that category before their admission to hospital. If we add that to our Italian data, we’ve got all these people who were out there working, doing grocery shopping, visiting their grandchildren, and then ten days later were dead. Diet culture tells us that if we eat, move, look a certain way we are protected from all sorts of scary stuff. This worry about BMI is that fear again on a larger scale. Following citations in the Malhotra sharticle, Jess went down the rabbit hole and found a paper from Italy published on 5th April 2020, titled “Influenza and obesity: its odd relationship and the lessons for COVID-19 pandemic”. It claimed “Being obese not only increases the risk of infection and of complications for the single obese person, but recent evidence indicates that a large obese population increases the chance of appearance of a more virulent viral strain, prolongs the virus shedding throughout the total population, and eventually may increase overall mortality rate of an influenza pandemic”. The paper then goes on to present three factors which make higher weight subjects more contagious than ‘leans’, one being increased viral shedding. The paper called for higher weight folks to participate in an extended quarantine period as part of COVID 19 response, based on an association that’s been observed in Influenza A. Jess went to look at the paper it sighted, and it notes a relationship between prolonged viral shedding time, Influenza A  and higher weight, but an inverse relationship with Influenza B. This increase in viral shedding time is about one day. When all Influenza strains were pooled together in this study, there was no relationship seen. This data should be extrapolated with caution because COVID 19 is not influenza. We do actually have information about the clearance rates of the virus coming out of China, saying that there’s no difference between BMI bands when it comes to viral clearance. The second factor in this paper that makes higher weight folks more contagious than the ‘leans’ is increased viral load and breath via fine aerosols. Again, Jess followed the citation to look at the primary reference, and after lots of scrolling to the supplementary table saw that there was no statistical association between viral RNA shedding and any of the BMI categories, unadjusted or adjusted. It’s not statistically significant. And yet, they are reporting that this has been a trend that has been observed. SO DODGY. And then the third factor that contributes to increased contagiousness is “obesity results in a more virulent disease with an increased virulence and morbidity”. This paper was citing three papers, two of which were mice models, and the third a cell culture study. They extrapolated findings from those studies back to a human population - big “uh oh”. This paints a picture of a higher weight body as a petri dish for a more virulent virus, and as something that should be feared. It’s a truly horrific paper, and a really dehumanising narrative. Why are these papers citing test tube and animal models? Because they can’t find the same evidence in actual humans. Actual humans get the flu - it’s not as if we can’t observe humans with flu and must instead turn to animal and test tube models to gather information. So much damage can be done with these studies - what are the real world impacts for people in larger bodies? Isolation is terrible for our mental health. If this paper was translated into some kind of public health policy, can you imagine the disaster? The limitations on people’s freedom of movement based on BMI? It makes our blood boil. The paper gives recommendations in their concluding remarks for higher weight folks - including “lose weight with mild caloric restriction”. They also recommend the use of metformin and other glucose modifying drug treatments, and to practice mild to moderate physical activity. The final country on our whistle-stop tour of the planet - the good old UK. Another hotspot for this dreadful virus. Also somewhere with some really fantastic data. The ICNARC (Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre) has been releasing critical care data weekly, and we now have five weeks of reports to look at. Fiona has been reading these reports each Friday as they get released. We have data on people in intensive care units in a relatively wide are of the UK - who is being admitted to intensive care, who has required lower or higher levels of respiratory support, and who has died. They’ve also given us the background stats (including BMI) for the areas that particular intensive care areas serve. The US data showed us a 50/50 gender breakdown in infection rates. In the UK data we see a much higher rate of males being admitted to intensive care due to COVID - 71.8% of people admitted. We also have data on markers of social disadvantage, conditions that people came into intensive care with, BMI and age. We can see over the five weeks of reports how things have changed - and the reports are additive, so each week’s new data is added to the growing data pool. This means we can see mistakes and assumptions we were making early on as more is revealed. In terms of BMI, there’s no difference between any of the BMI bands until you get to the “over 40” BMI band where there’s a slightly higher representation of people being admitted compared with the background population. That is likely to be an artefact of weight bias - as we discussed with the US data, that admitting staff may be more concerned about higher weight people.` The proportion of people with a BMI over 40 being admitted is dropping every week as more data is collected. We’re looking at three main things with this data. We’ve got people who are admitted compared to the general population. We’ve got people admitted who are receiving advanced support versus basic support. And we’ve got BMI band information, where we can see who in which BMI band needed advanced versus basic respiratory support. In the BMI bands when we look at basic versus advanced support, it’s about 50/50 in all the BMI bands. That would mean that BMI is not driving whether you would need advanced support - it’s not a determinant. If a higher body size meant you needed more advanced support, that would be very clear in this data. Currently in this data we have over 300 people with BMI over 40. It's enough people to see there's no trend. In terms of deaths, we want to know whether larger bodied people receiving medical care die at a higher rate than people in smaller bodies receiving medical care. When the first weekly report came out, it looked like people with a higher BMI were more likely to die versus being discharged from critical care. As the weeks have gone on, that effect has blunted. It’s a phenomenon we call ‘regression to the mean’ in statistics. When you’ve got a small amount of numbers, things can look really significant, and as you add more numbers to that data things look more average. The Index of Multiple Deprivation - categorises people from least to most deprived in society. It’s important to note that the NHS is a public health system, compared to the US health system. In terms of admission based on deprivation in the UK, we’ve got a pretty linear relationship between admission and deprivation. People coming from the least deprived areas have a lower chance of being admitted to ICU (14.8%), and 24.7% coming from the most deprived areas. There’s also a linear relationship with renal support, and with requiring more intensive interventions. This speaks to a background of medical marginalisation. It’s likely these more deprived people are coming in with poorer health to begin with. This pandemic is really revealing inequities in health - it is a stress test on health disparity. That’s what needs to be front page news, rather than fear mongering about BMI. ‘Public health’ is not about health - it’s about housing. It’s about economic access to all things. Equality and safety and opportunity. Dr Malhotra - ‘the root cause of all disease is unavoidable junk food environment’. That’s his take on it. (dick)! From one of the letters to the editor in the Obesity Journal - “The COVID 19 pandemic is challenging the world in an unprecedented way. We at Obesity have been sounding the alarm about the obesity epidemic and now must take up the cause for our patients with obesity in the face of this dual pandemic”. Notice that they offer no advice, no call to action for health services to get better at treating larger bodied people? That’s not actually what they’re calling for. They’re calling for more ‘awareness’, which is a subterfuge for ‘let’s keep up the fat hate’. If they were actually concerned, they would be calling for detailed analysis of how outcomes can be optimized for larger bodied people right now. That's not what they’re doing - they just want the narrative that ‘fat is bad’ to be out there so they can continue selling medication and ‘treatments’ for this ‘equally terrible’ condition. To that we say, “fuck that shit”. Whew, we’re feeling a bit exhausted and jet-lagged from that world journey! Thanks to Fiona and Jess for their hard work, dedication and generosity in digging into all that data and sifting through those papers. (and a special shout out to Fiona who recorded with three children who at one point all stood in front of her having a screaming tantrum) What does this all mean in the bigger picture? Hopefully this has undermined the messages of fear. At the beginning of this recording, we talked about what was firing us up about the corona-crisis. After traversing this territory, what are the take home tips? Fiona says that her take home message is to keep in your sights those people who this is relevant for. If you or a loved one has a higher BMI, Fiona’s advice is to dismiss the headlines. Do not listen to the nonsense of people who have got an ulterior motive to keep you hating your body size. Know that your BMI, if you catch COVID, may be a determinant of whether you get hospitalised or not. But once you’re hospitalised, your chances are no better or worse than anyone else based on your weight. Don’t let anyone spin you the line that you’ve been placed on a ventilator because of your BMI, because based on the data we have right now that’s not true. Jess says her take home message is centered around health disparities and inequities. This is an incredible opportunity for us to dig in once the crisis is over and start to unpick and unpack the different ways in which universal health care like we see in NZ and with the NHS may contrast with the sort of care and access that we’re seeing in the US, such as the ability to pay for care and how it impacts on people’s ability to get treatment where necessary. We here in NZ and Australia are really bloody lucky. No one on the planet has immunity to this virus, and some places on the planet are suffering to a level we can’t even comprehend. Our hearts are going out to you, and we’re really hoping that this ends quickly. Look after yourselves - we will get through this with our bullshit antennas larger and more attuned than ever before. We’re all human, we’re all in this together, and we can do so much better. The housing market is showing signs of multiple personality disorder... the two things that could bring real estate to it’s knees near-term… and Facebook lays an egg and gets scrambled on Wall Street. I’m Bryan Ellis… this is Episode #301 of Self-Directed Investor Talk.----Hello, Self-Directed Investor Nation… a lot to get to today, after a bit of a hiatus. Today’s show page is SDITalk.com/301, so let’s jump right in, after a quick word from our sponsor, the Self-Directed Investor Academy.Have you ever noticed that there’s just not much in the way of really great training material out there where self-directed IRA’s and solo 401(k)’s are concerned? Oh sure… all of the IRA companies provide “education”… but their end is clearly so you’ll give them your business. And there are a few books written by attorneys using the native language of attorneys which is a strange dialect of Latin known as “YesButProbablyNo”… but if you’re an intelligent person who just wants the hard truth about how to use self-directed retirement accounts while squeezing every penny of value out of them you can… even when that may not be in the best interest of your IRA company… well, SDI Academy is for you. SDI Academy is a private membership group that produces video-based Wealth Guides about the exact topics that self-directed IRA and 401(k) owners need to understand… totally free of the murky babble you see on the internet. I think you’ll particularly enjoy their trainings on how to pick the right self-directed retirement account for you and how to pick the best self-directed IRA company for you… because the results you’ll end up with are probably VERY DIFFERENT than what you’d expect… and so, you’ll really get TREMENDOUS VALUE. For a limited time, listeners to SDI Talk can get a FREE 3-day membership to the already-inexpensive but inordinately valuable SDI Academy by visiting SDITalk.com/academy. That’s SDITalk.com/academy.Ok people… we all know that the overwhelming top asset class choice among self-directed retirement account owners is real estate, so what I’ve got to share with you will be quite directly relevant for a very large swath of you… say, 100% of you! Hehehehe. This past week, some new economic numbers came out that suggest the housing market is slowing down… the evidence cited by sources like the very entertaining but not always accurate CNBC informs us the reason for this is a slowdown in boiling-hot markets like L.A. and Denver. For some reason I’m not entirely sure of, I’ve linked to the cutesy video CNBC made about this over at SDITalk.com/301.https://www.cnbc.com/video/2018/07/26/housing-market-slows-down-real-estate-housing.htmlBut this very morning, July 30, 2018, the National Association of Realtors reported that pending home sales rose more than expected after a relatively soft selling season so far this year. Conflicting news, it would seem. Not really. There’s more to it below the surface. And I, your humble host, will pull back the curtains for you now. What we have right now, folks, is a situation where real in many of those hot markets, real estate prices are still increasing, but two other statistics have changed: The rate of increase is less than it has been in years – like in Dallas, Texas – and the number of home actually being sold is falling off too, like in Southern California, where CoreLogic tells us that there were SUBSTANTIALLY fewer home sales of all types have sold this year versus last… as in, a whopping 11.8% fewer home sales this year versus last.So it’s strange… you’ve got rising prices, but decreased activity. Now I could totally go into geek mode on you with this stuff, but I’ll tell you what I think is happening from a very practical perspective:What we have is a real estate market that has boomed and boomed and boomed such that it looks like the mortgage meltdown of 2008 never happened at all. That’s only 10 years ago now… and practically NOBODY is sitting on a real estate loss anymore, if they just held on.Do you know what you’re NOT hearing much about these days, that was a super popular topic back then? Foreclosure filing statistics. I’ll tell you why: There’s almost no bad news there. Foreclosures have tanked practically nationwide. That’s a very good thing. So what’s going on here with this strange mix of positive and negative data? Everyone has a theory, including me, but let’s look at what we actually KNOW to be true:The U.S. economy is BOOMING. By any and every reasonable standard, the U.S. economy is in better condition now than at any time in the last 10 years… and maybe longer. It’s eerily… well, quite positively, actually, reminiscent of the 1980’s from about 83 onward… the economy was just clicking on all cylinders… and the same is happening now. Unemployment is lower than it’s been since 2000… GDP is booming… wage growth was higher last month than it’s been all year so far… the fact is, it’s just hard to find any objectively negative indicators about the economy right now.So what’s going to happen next with housing prices? You people who’ve listened to me for a long time know that I don’t claim to be a prognosticator, and that has not changed. But just from a simple logical point of view, here’s what I expect:I expect that there will be continued slowing in the rate of appreciation in the super-hot markets, but I don’t believe we’re facing any sort of impending real estate collapse. The fundamentals of the economy are simply too strong for that right now, and there are a number of leading indicators suggesting that it will boom still more. That said, there are two big potential headwinds to keep an eye on for those of you who may be in the market to unload some of your property to finance retirement or other expenses. The first headwind is rising interest rates. Interest rates are already on the rise and will likely continue to do so, as is to be expected in a rapidly expanding economy. The thing to watch is whether the Fed goes nuts with this. In recent decades, the Fed has been as much a political entity as an economic one… and that’s NEVER good for the economy. Right now, that tendency appears to be still reasonably in check. The second potential headwind is the midterm Congressional elections of 2018. Set aside your political biases and beliefs for just a moment, and let’s make some rational predictions here. What we know, without a doubt, is that the stock market tends to be a leading indicator of the broader economy. We also know that when President Trump was elected in 2016, from the very next day onward for a very long time, the market boomed upwards with a ferocity and consistency that was absolutely breathtaking, which means that the market believed… even though nobody seemed to want to admit it… that they WANTED Trump policies for the good of the economy. So fast forward to the election to happen in November of this year. Should the Democrats retake the House of Representatives, you can be certain that Congress will instantly slam the door shut on Trump’s economic objectives. There will be a number of things he can continue to do independently, but to effect real change, he needs Congress. So if the Democrats retake Congress, the Trump boom in the economy will likely stagnate… and I bet the stock market will start to bleed consistently. What I expect, overall, is more of a plateau in real estate values rather than a hard decline. In a weaker economy, sure… you might predict a bit of a collapse. But a weak economy is not what we have right now. It’s strong, and arguably getting much stronger. What’s the prescription? Same as always: With your real estate investments, focus on cash flow. Cash flow, cash flow, cash flow. Strong cash flow makes it wholly unnecessary for you to focus much on flighty valuations in real estate or stocks or anything else. Enough cash flow from your investments, and simply nothing else matters. Cash flow is king. And I can’t wrap up today without mentioning the absolute slaughter of Facebook stock last week… a meltdown that slashed $100 BILLION of value from Facebook. That’s never happened before in the history of the stock market that a company has taking such a quick market cap slashing of that degree.I bring this up for two reasons:First, for any of you who remain focused on investing your money in Wall Street, you should take the time to learn about stock options as a way to hedge your risk. You buy insurance for your real estate… I think it’s a bit foolish not to do the same for your investments if it’s simple and economical to do that… and that’s what stock options can do for you.Second… the Facebook debacle reminds me of one of the reasons it’s so wonderful to invest in non-Wall Street assets… and that is that with a bit of effort, you can actually buy assets at a discount versus their current value… and thereby build in a strong cushion against loss. You can’t do that with Facebook. As I look right now, Facebook is trading at about $170 per share. That being true, there’s no way you’re going to be able to buy those shares at a huge discount versus their current price. But in real estate, for example, it happens ALL THE TIME that you can buy real estate far below it’s market value. That’s a huge difference… a huge reason to seriously look at pushing more and more of your assets AWAY from Wall Street and into assets you actually control and understand yourself. That is all for today, my friends… I’ll be back with you tomorrow and will tell you something I’m observing in that industry known as “turnkey rental properties”… this is a big deal… and NOBODY is talking about it… except for me, tomorrow, on this very showI am, of course, Bryan Ellis. The best-selling book and movie The Big Short tells the inside story of how Dr. Michael Burry made a huge fortune for his hedge fund clients by betting against the real estate market… and how those clients ultimately didn’t appreciate him despite a HUGE profit.  And I may be the only person in America who thinks so, but I think the clients were right and Dr. Burry was wrong.  I’m Bryan Ellis.  I’ll tell you why right now in Episode 191.----Hello, SDI Nation!  Welcome to the podcast of record for savvy self-directed investors like you!Have you ever read the book “The Big Short” by Michael Lewis?  If not, it’s a great read… and I really enjoyed the movie too, which is solidly over 2 hours long and felt like it was over in a flash. So I totally recommend the book and the movie… it’s a really fascinating explanation of what led up to the mortgage meltdown, and how it really was just a function of greed and carelessness.Part of the story involves Dr. Michael Burry.  He trained as a neurologist and got the degree and was a resident, but clearly his passion was in the financial world.  He had a website in the late 1990’s where he posted information about his stock picks and analysis leading to those picks.  His picks were so successful that he got the attention of some major financial players like Vanguard investments and the prominent investor Joel Greenblatt of Gotham Capital. To condense the story a bit, Burry quits medicine, starts a hedge fund called Scion Capital using some inherited capital, and continues to excel.  His first year brought a profit of 55%.  Soon, he had over $500 million under management and was turning money away.  But near the beginning, he attracted a large investment from Gotham Capital, who was Burry’s founding investor.Dr. Burry was clearly a brilliant man… clearly the reason Gotham was willing to give him millions of dollars for value-based stock investing. But Dr. Burry spread his focus a bit.  He recognized that there was a problem, and the problem was that the booming real estate market was built on a house of cards called EASY MONEY… that millions of people were being given loans they couldn’t afford for more than just a year or two during the low introductory teaser rates.  Dr. Burry recognized that there would be a huge wave of defaults soon after those teaser rates expired.Dr. Burry’s analysis turned out to be right… very, very right.  So in 2005 – while real estate was still raging hot – Dr. Burry convinced Goldman Sachs to sell him credit default swaps against loans that Burry saw as risky.  Goldman thought Burry was a sucker, sold him the swaps, and 2 years later, Burry had profited by more than $700 MILLION dollars, making his investors – including Gotham Capital – a huge, huge fortune.Curiously, Dr. Burry quit managing money after that experience.  He made a huge fortune, and doubtlessly could continue to do so as a money manager, because he absolutely has an eye for both risk and value… a rare thing, for sure. But here’s the thing… between the time Burry bought those swaps in 2005 and cashed them in for a huge profit in 2007, some bad things happened.  At first, the real estate market didn’t decline right away, and so those swaps lost value… very quickly.  Then to compound the problem, Goldman and the other brokerages who were responsible for pricing those swaps didn’t exactly do so in an honest way.  In fact, they aggressively took advantage of the situation by pegging the value of subprime mortgages as being far higher than any reasonable person would believe, thus causing the value of Burry’s swaps – which were really just a form of insurance – to sink in value, even though the opposite should have been happening.Burry held on, and in 2007 made a huge profit.  But in 2006… things didn’t look good.  For the first time, Burry’s fund was losing money… and a LOT of it… and worst yet, he was losing money on an investment – credit default swaps – that was outside of Dr. Burry’s core competency, which was value-based stock investing. This didn’t settle well with Burry’s investors.  It was a bad time… open revolt… and many of Burry’s investors… including his biggest client and original investor, Gotham Capital, rather forcefully demanded that Burry exit the trades and return their capital. It was a very bad time at Scion Capital… Burry had never experienced losses, and now he had investors who were losing confidence in him very aggressively, and demanding their money back.So Dr. Burry took an extreme step – he invoked a provision in his investor agreement that allowed him to delay the right of his investors to withdraw their capital… and that, of course, caused a huge problem as well, with lawsuits flying and tempers flaring and a generally awful situation. When it was all said and done, it turned out that Dr. Burry was right.  He made a huge fortune, and so did his investors. But Burry decided to get out of the business of capital management… largely, it appears, because he felt unappreciated.  The movie closes with Dr. Burry sending an unsolicited email to Gotham Capital that said, simply, “You’re welcome.”Ok, so here’s the thing:  The entire movie is set up to narrowly cast the blame for the mortgage meltdown on Wall Street – and there’s certainly lots of blame there, though it’s ABUNDANTLY CLEAR that the real blame belongs to good ole Uncle Sam.But the move also makes a point of glorifying Burry and the fact that he was right – and his big evil investors were wrong – and that they profited from his talent and never said thank you.My friends:  Burry’s investors were right, and Burry was wrong.  The fact that he was ultimately profitable isn’t relevant.I’ve told you over and over again on this show that as self-directed investors, we must use the S3 standard to judge all of our investment choices:  Simple, Safe and Strong.  Those words have some subjectivity, for sure – after all, we’re not all the same. But the real issue is that Dr. Burry did something VERY DIFFERENT with his client’s capital than his history suggested he should do.  Dr. Burry was a brilliant stock picker… brilliant is an understatement.  But he had no substantive experience trading credit default swaps.  He was not a real estate or mortgage investor.  And he wasn’t well connected with that world.  In short, he had only purely academic reasons to think that his hypothesis would prove out.It did prove out, of course, to his and his investor’s benefit.  But even though he was profitable, even though was right on that investment in an astounding, career-defining kind of way, he did something wrong:  He did not respect the capital of his investors.  It wasn’t that he didn’t comply with his legal commitments to them.  He certainly did.  But he quite substantially showed disrespect for their own judgement when he made a major shift in direction… and for an entire year, the objective evidence was the Dr. Burry was very, very wrong… and his fund was hemorrhaging tens of millions of dollars… dollars that belonged to his clients, not to him.Again, Dr. Burry was proven right in the end.  But that’s not the whole issue.  You see, if an investment causes you to worry… that’s a bad investment.  The financial results just don’t justify that.  It means that EITHER the investment is just a bad idea overall, or maybe that you’re using money in the deal you can’t afford to lose.  Either way… consistent, ongoing stress from an investment means it doesn’t FEEL strong to you… and whether we like it or not, those feelings are what brings stress.  And stress isn’t a good thing.  Take it from a guy who had a heart attack at the tender age of 39… and learned some really, really hard lessons about simplifying life and reducing stress as a result. To be clear, I admire Dr. Burry.  I wish I had his intellect.  But he didn’t respect his investor’s capital… and he provides a great case study for why it’s so critical that you work only with people who really, truly do respect your capital just as much as you do.My friends, invest wisely today, and live well forever. Today I'm going to tell you 3 new things you need to know about. My enthusiasm will probably make it sound like I'm giving you a sales pitch. Sorry about that. If you're not in the mood, the tiniest motion of a finger will take you to a new and different place… You decided to stay? I think you'll be glad you did. YouTube. Not FaceBook. Throughout the year I've been saying to students of Wizard Academy, “YouTube will deliver one trillion views during the 365 short days of 2012. It's a message delivery vehicle that has yet to be maximized. YouTube's potential to grow a business is vastly greater than FaceBook. The number of search strings typed into YouTube each day is second only to Google.” The actual number of views in 2012 turned out to be 1.46 trillion. Let's put that in perspective: One million seconds is about 12 days. tick-tick-tick-tick One billion seconds is nearly 32 years. tick-tick-tick One trillion seconds is 31,688 years. This means 46,264 people per second click to watch a YouTube video 24/7/365. Nearly 3 million per minute, 4 billion per day. That's 13 times the population of the United States every day.* You have things to say. Why not say them to the world? #1 VidBetter is a video production system that lets goobers like you and me crank out YouTube videos that look like big money. And there's no learning curve with VidBetter. All the tricky stuff has been fully automated. The hardware comes in a box. Your professional editors are in the cloud and available to you 24/7. http://www.vidbetter.com/ (Take a look.) #2 Do you talk better than you write? Dave Young and Paul Boomer have created a content-extraction service that pulls your very best out of you and puts it on paper. It's a fabulous way to create witty and intelligent blog posts, craft award-winning web copy, record relaxed and informative podcasts, write training manuals, create policy and procedure documents, whatever it is you need to get out of your head and onto the web or onto paper. All you have to do is talk on the phone to a professional interviewer. BAM. The whole thing is recorded, transcribed, edited, and given back to you in whatever format you desire. These guys will make you sound like a genius. http://www.shortcutblogging.com/ (Check it out.) #3 Become a happier you. Kyle Cease was voted the #1 comedian on Comedy Central in 2009 but his real passion is for transformative change. I've watched him lead his classmates through exercises that made a profound difference in their thought processes, their attitudes, and their expectations. When his 2-day class was announced a couple of weeks ago, the classmates who had already met him snapped up all the rooms in Engelbrecht House immediately. If you want 2013 to be VERY DIFFERENT than 2012, https://wizardacademy.org/scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=400 (be at this class.) Sleep in a hotel. Don't tell yourself that you'll catch Kyle's class next time. Kyle did more than 200 shows last year and right now he's hotter than ever. It took weeks to find dates for this class that would work in his schedule for 2013. It will be awhile before we can get Kyle back to Austin. This will be a highly interactive, fast paced, experiential workshop. You will definitely leave better than you came. I shared this stuff with you today because I want you to have the happiest possible 2013. I want you to be energized and productive. I apologize if I sounded like I was making a sales pitch. I'm an ad writer, remember? I sound like I'm making a sales pitch when I pray. But God's okay with that. He understands. Hopefully you do, too. Roy H. Williams
