The Rev. Shawn Amos has had an extraordinary life and career in the music business. His father Wally Amos, best known as the delicious genius behind the Famous Amos cookie brand, was also a successful talent scout (the first black talent scout in the country to be exact) working with the likes of Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Simon & Garfunkel and many more. So you could say that the music business is in Shawn's blood. Shawn forged his own path, working his way up as an A&R man for Shout! Factory! and Rhino Records. Among the many great artists he worked on records with include soul singer Solomon Burke, Herb Alpert, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Matthew Sweet, and the late great Quincy Jones, who sadly passed away shortly after we recorded this interview. Also an acclaimed author, Shawn's book "Cookies & Milk" was awarded the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work - Youth/Teens! And on top of all that Shawn is a accomplished blues musician and singer/songwriter. His latest albums include the funk-inspired joyful blues album "Soul Brother No. 1" and a live album of 13 Rev classics entitled, "Vivir En España". Recorded on a recent tour of Spain. We get into all that and more in this fascinating conversation with The Rev. Shawn Amos. www.shawnamos.com . . Today on the LA Food Podcast, is work/life balance possible in fine dining? What the heck is postmodern craft beer? And why should Angelenos care about the passing of Famous Amos founder Wally Amos?  James Beard-nominated reporter Gab Chabran is with us today to explore all of these topics, and to tell us why he believes the city's best tacos are in Whittier, and where you should consider heading next time you're craving sushi or in need of Japanese pantry goods.  Our interview today is with Chef Daniel Shemtob, the founder of The Lime Truck and HATCH Yakitori in Downtown LA. Daniel's most recent venture is called Snibbs. Snibbs is bringing cutting-edge, and rather good-looking work shoes, I might add to professional kitchens. Daniel saw a big hole in the market for stylish, functional footwear after slipping in the kitchen and missing the opening of his own restaurant. Daniel exudes entrepreneurialism, and this is a deeply inspiring conversation for anyone who's ever thought of starting a business, or who's even remotely interested in foot health and/or fashion. And did I mention that Daniel won two seasons of The Food Network's Great Food Truck Race?  Helpful links: LA FOODSTACK, our free newsletter containing links to all of the stories we discuss on today's podcast https://thelacountdown.substack.com/ LAist Food Friday coverage https://laist.com/news/food Gab Chabran on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/gabchabran/?hl=en Daniel Shemtob on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/daniel.shemtob/?hl=en Snibbs https://snibbs.co/ The Lime Truck https://www.thelimetruck.com/ HATCH Yakitori https://www.hatchyalater.com/ The LA Food Podcast is produced with the help of: Adam Skaggs Tiffany Perez Tim Bertolini -- Get 10% off at House of Macadamias using code "LAFOOD" https://www.houseofmacadamias.com/pages/la-foods -- Get 10% off on your first purchase of wagyu beef at First Light Farms using code "LAFOOD10" https://www.firstlight.farm/us/ --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thelafoodpodcast/support

Welcome back to another thought-provoking episode of the "That's Absurd Podcast." This week, we're diving deep into questions of identity, the latest news in politics, hip-hop, and pop culture, and some controversial moments in sports. Let's jump into it! Question of the Week: Do African Americans Consider People Like Kamala Harris as Black Historically? This week, we're tackling a complex question: How do African Americans view figures like Kamala Harris in terms of their racial identity? We explore the historical context and modern perspectives on what it means to be "Black" in America, especially when it comes to biracial or multicultural individuals. Notable News: Politics: Kamala Harris Announces VP Tim Walz: In a surprising political move, Vice President Kamala Harris has announced her running mate, Tim Walz, for the upcoming election. We discuss what this partnership means for the Democratic ticket and how it could shape the future of American politics. Hip Hop: Nelly Arrested in St. Louis: Hip-hop star Nelly was arrested in St. Louis due to an outstanding traffic summons. We break down the details of his arrest and discuss its implications for his career and public image. Pop Culture: Michael Rubin Speaks Out on "Black Hate on Hate": Michael Rubin, a prominent figure in sports and entertainment, has expressed his concerns over the rumors regarding Meek Mill's sexuality and the broader issue of "Black hate on Black hate." We delve into the impact of his statements and what they reveal about race and community in today's culture. Wally Amos Passes Away: We pay tribute to Wally Amos, the legendary founder of the Famous Amos cookie brand, who has sadly passed away. We reflect on his legacy and the impact he had on the food industry and African American entrepreneurship. Sports: Noah Lyles: The Rise of an Unlikable Star? Track and field sensation Noah Lyles has been making headlines, but not always for the right reasons. We discuss his recent comments and actions that have led some to label him as "unlikable." Is this criticism fair, or is it just part of being in the spotlight?   That's a wrap for this week's episode of the "That's Absurd Podcast." From political maneuvers and hip-hop arrests to cultural commentary and sports controversies, we've covered a lot of ground. We hope you enjoyed the conversation and gained some new insights along the way. Thanks for tuning in! Don't forget to subscribe, share, and join the discussion on our social media channels. This is the first one where it was just cookies and that was it. It even predates another podcast we did, which was Mrs. Fields' Cookies. It even predates Mrs. Fields by a couple of years. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: Yeah. So first cookie store in history, and it's a really interesting journey because Wally went to school to study to be a secretary. Dave Young: Really? Stephen Semple: Yeah, and the first job he got was in the mail room of the William Morris Talent Agency, which is one of the top talent agencies in the world. He worked his way up, and he became the first black talent manager. First one, so he was really groundbreaking on that. And he reached a point where he decided he wanted to leave the agency and set up his own agency to manage his own clients, but this new agency he started was really struggling, and he would go home at the end of the days and he'd feel frankly depressed, and he wanted to feel good about things. So at the end of the day, he would go home and he baked cookies at night. And he'd baked these chocolate chip pecan cookies like his aunt made. Dave Young: As one do. Stephen Semple: And he really did this to self soothe. It was never a business idea. It was something he did to make himself feel good. Dave Young: Just made some cookies. Stephen Semple: Made some cookies and he'd bring them back to the office. And when clients were in, he'd give them to clients. And one day light goes off. He said, "The one thing that makes me happy is making cookies. Why don't I start this as a business?" He gets on the phone. He calls old clients. He gets an investment from Marvin Gay and a bunch of others. He raises $25,000 from these well known musicians and decides I'm going to start this business. So in March of 1975, he opens the first shop dedicated the cookies in the world called Famous Amos Cookies. Dave Young: Famous Amos Cookies. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: I love the fact that the cookies were a form of therapy for him. I mean, it's like a Ted Lasso moment, isn't it? It's... Stephen Semple: It sort of is. Yeah. Yeah. And so he opens it up in this highly visible location in Los Angeles on the seedy, because at the time very seedy Sunset Boulevard was full of runwa...

A memoir in the Huffingpost titled, "Cookies and Milk," set's the prologue to this conversation with activist, bluesman Reverend Shawn Amos. Growing up in Hollywood in the '70s, post-civil rights movement, and the age of sexual freedom. Shawn takes us through what childhood was like in the home of Wally Amos, founder of Famous Amos, and a mother that suffered from schizoaffective disorder. Then placing anger, rage, angst, and even courage to transfer into his music. Shawn Amos recognizes that these are challenging times where we can take one step forward and another back in light of the murder of George Floyd. Recognizing Shawn's music makes a statement that stands the test of time but self-admittingly is pursuing something bigger than himself, while not BS'ing himself. In folk tales, as in cartoons, the laws of physics and biology often are violated without a second thought. Things get blown up, and then are fine; coyotes run off the edge of a cliff and hover in mid-air a moment before plunging; and mice have their tails cut off and then restored. As in the British story "The Cat and the Mouse", which is based on the cumulative list motif, similar to the nursery rhyme "The House That Jack Built". The best-known version of the story is itself told in rhyme by folklorist Joseph Jacobs, who included it in a volume of English stories published in 1890. And it was this version that was familiar to our winner in the Be A Character Contest, a young man from Indiana named Aiden. He requested this story, so we made him the mouse (Ouch! Sorry about that.) But of course we weren't content to copy someone else's version of the tale (tail) despite its appealing rhyming rhythmic lines. We devised, as usual, our own madcap, quasi-improvised retelling. We bring this podcast to you from Quincy, IL and Hannibal, MO, where we return to perform at libraries in both cities. And the libraries, we're happy to say, were not damaged by the recent flooding of the Mississippi River, though some parts of both cities definitely were soaked. So far, all systems are go for the annual Tom Sawyer Days held during the Independence Day weekend in Hannibal. And we're back to participate for the first time in several years. We also tell you all about our recent encounter in Hawaii with Wally Amos, the famous cookie guru who now is heavily involved with promoting reading, particularly reading aloud to children. Not only does he read to kids himself, he is chair of the Read It Loud Foundation, which has a goal of enticing at least 5 million parents to read to their kids each day for at least 10 minutes. He donates 10 percent of the profits from his cookie stores in Kailua and Honolulu to this endeavor, and makes promotional appearances across the country to promote it -- including Savannah, GA., where Read It Loud! Savannah already has enjoyed considerable success. One of the activities of the program in Savannah is to donate a book to the parents of each child born in the community. It's never too early to start! We salute Wally Amos and Read It Loud for the admirable work they do -- which, after all, is very much in line with the work we do ourselves.Happy Listening (whatever your age),Dennis (Narrator, Cow, Farmer's Wife, Butcher, Painter), Kimberly (Cat, Farmer, Baker), and Zephyr (Mouse)Link: Folktales to Read Out Loud

Aloha! That's a word that can mean “Hello”, “Goodbye”, or “I love you”. But in this case, it means yes,  we finally took our trip to Hawaii. We had a glorious week packed with activity on the island of Oahu, and we've devoted this podcast to telling you about some of the things we did, interlaced with some sounds we captured at the Polynesian Culture Center. We spent a day at the Polynesian Culture Center, soaking in the sights, sounds and tastes (a luau was included in our package) of several Pacific Island cultures. We visited Pearl Harbor, where we stood on a platform that overlooks the USS Arizona, sunk in the water a few feet below the surface. We went snorkeling at Hanauma Bay coral reef, where we were face to face with exotic species of fish we'd never seen before – Zephyr even had a close encounter with a huge sea turtle. We also went swimming at Waikiki Beach and Kailua Beach, where Kimberly used to swim when she lived in Hawaii as a child. And in Kailua we met Wally Amos, the founder of the original Famous Amos cookie company, who now owns a cookie shop there, and also is active in promoting reading to children. Now we're back at “home” (I.e., the Continental U.S.) and it's crunch time to get our new show ready for its premiere on June 11. We're now a two-person act onstage, since Zephyr recently retired, but you can still hear his voice on the podcasts. Our apologies for the tardiness of this post. In addition to our trip, we've faced a mountain of technical difficulties lately.Mahalo!Barefoot Dennis, Flower-Haired Kimberly and Sunburned Zephyr
