Introduction: Welcome to Five & Thrive: a weekly podcast highlighting the Southeast's most interesting news, entrepreneurs, and information of the week, all under 5 minutes.  My name is Jon Birdsong and I'm with Atlanta Ventures.  New Company of the Week: New year, new companies and job changes and roles are sprouting up everywhere. Chris Klaus of ISS fame announced this week that he has started a new company called Fusen World. Fusen is a Campus startup accelerator platform that connects students with other founders, mentors, and investors. Klaus has been on the pulse of CreateX for several years and supported hundreds of students in that time. I love how he is leveraging technology to broaden the reach. If you're a student looking for quality resources, check out Fusen World.   Product of the Week:  The product of the week is called Flowpath.  Founded by Alex and Brandon Cummings, Flowpath is the operating system for the facilities management in your building. They automate work orders, maintenance, events, notifications, projects, and reporting in a simple to use platform so now there is a clear visibility into the work needed to get done, getting done, and has been done. Right now, doing this is mainly performed through pen and paper with little significant manual work. Imagine a 10-20, or 40 floor building and all the continual needs and maintenance required to run an efficient show. Flowpath is the solution. Keep Flowpath and their product on your radar. These are companies that go from sticky product to quiet giant in a span of months.  Concept of the Week: Serial entrepreneur Landon Bennett and I were going back and forth over Vertical CRM's. The tl;dr or fast forward 30 seconds is that there still are several areas of opportunity to build a $50-$100M+ business in vertical CRM's. WelcomeHome software is a great example as a vertical CRM for senior living homes. The journey takes longer and is oftentimes bootstrapped. Learning the in's and outs of an industry and building enough of a product where the customer now either replaces their existing product or trains the team and company to do their work in a new way is difficult and takes time but if you get the right market at the right time they work. Vertical CRM's fit well in the characteristics of the South. We can bootstrap much further than most since the cost of living is lower, comparatively and building a $50-$100+ business with little to no outside capital is a way to create well-paying jobs and produce generational wealth.    Events of the Week: Earlier this week we had John Larriccia of WelcomeHome. We put that link in the show notes so you can see John interviewed by A.T. Gimbel. Another event to put on your calendar is the first Atlanta Startup Village which is back in gear on Feb 13th at 6:30 p.m. Five pitches, 1 winner. Acquisitions of the Week: A few months ago, we highlighted MessageGears raised a smooth 62 million. Well some of that investment has now been used to acquire Swrve (with no first “e”). Swrve is a mobile app marketing platform that helps enterprise brands deliver stunning mobile experiences. That makes sense since MessageGears works with some of the largest companies in the world to send emails after integrating with each company's enormous amount of data. Swrve seems to be an ideal extension of the customization for large brands and businesses, but now through mobile experiences. Congrats to Roger Barnette and team on the acquisition. Article of the Week: SaaStr founder, Jason Lemkin has been producing some very quality content recently and one of them is the metrical journey of SaaS company, Docebo. Over 15 years, Docebo has just passed the $145m ARR milestone after only raising $14m. Docebo is a learning management system for corporations. Their first seven years were bootstrapped until they raised a small amount that included mainly secondary shares. Here is a company that has consistently increased their ACV, nailed the market-product fit, and compounded growth very well. If the unit economics of your business are sound, keep going, next thing you know, you'll be at $145M in ARR.    Talent of the Week: Just recently I heard there is a rockstar People Ops leader out in the market. If you're looking for someone to lead your company's HR and PeopleOps, please send me an email jon dot birdsong at atlanta ventures dot com.  Annnnd that is five minutes! New Company of  the Week: Fusen World Product of the Week: FlowPath Event of the Week: Heathcare Meetup Recap, Atlanta Startup Village Acquisitions of the Week: MessageGears Buys Swrve Article of the Week: Five Interesting Learnings from Docebo Talent of the Week: People Ops - Email Me

Introduction: Welcome to Five & Thrive: a weekly podcast highlighting the Southeast's most interesting news, entrepreneurs, and information of the week, all under 5 minutes.  My name is Jon Birdsong and I'm with Atlanta Ventures. Beta Product of the Week: Just yesterday morning, the iStory team launched their product on ProductHunt and it has been well received. Stephen Malik, Chris Hall, and team, have put an interactive product out there to help content creators improve audience experience through voice. How do they do it? Imagine you have a website that sells a product, with the easy use of iStory, you can add your unique voice to any part of the website. So as a user experiences your site, whether it be a video demo or a specific web page, adding audio with analytics is performed by iStory. Check out their website, demo, and if it peaks your interest enough, upvote them on Product Hunt.  The Second Beta Product of the week is Any Distance who just launched their 3.0 version which includes features making it the most safe and secure activity tracking app in the market, while still keeping their superior design. If you run, bike, or walk, Any Distance is the app for you to prioritize celebration and maintain motivation.   Event of the Week: Mark your calendars for the last Atlanta Startup Convos of the year on December 7th. It's amazing how much that MeetUp group has organically grown with over 2700 members in the MeetUp. Three very exciting products will be shown including Gatsby which we've covered on this pod before, Lavender, and The Gig Room. Jacey Cadet of Atlanta Ventures runs and hosts this informative and insightful event. Mark your calendars today.    Alpha Product of the Week: This week's Alpha product of the week comes from entrepreneur Drew Williams of FANFUNDR. The product is still early, but the community driven mechanisms are very interesting and I believe Drew as entrepreneur will create some magic in the space. Here is how it works: let's say you're a fan of an artist and you have an idea about creating a unique event, product, or piece of content you'd like to see your cherished artist produce. With FANFUNDR, the mechanisms are in place to dream the idea, generate a petition, gain a groundswell of fans who love the idea, begin collecting payments to fund the concept, and generate enough momentum to make the experience or product happen. This product is still very early and Drew is entertaining several ways to make the process seamless, even looking at digital assets to purchase as a way to kick start the momentum. Regardless, check out FanFundr, sign up for the product updates, and keep in touch with the evolution of this journey.   Companies Worth Applying Too:  This week I was speaking with a junior engineer looking to work for an early stage company. Outside of suggesting different engineering groups he should connect with as well as combing through some of the fastest growing companies in Georgia on the Inc 5000, the Atlanta Tech Village job boards came to mind. I went to check it out and in addition to several Carpool Logistics roles we mentioned last week, there are more companies hiring including ePlannerPro, ByteCheck, and more coming! Shout out to Irena and Aly for keeping this job board fresh!  Market Analysis of the Week: For those who have listened or read more of our content from Atlanta Ventures, you know the importance of markets. One of our very talented interns, Divya Pinnaka, put together an insightful analysis on the carbon footprint market not only today but in 10 years. She also highlights the companies already working on the problem. The saying is “pick a niche to get rich” is true, but picking a niche that will grow into an even bigger market is the cream of the crop. To me the carbon footprint market is vast. In Greenzie's sense, it would be like outdoor robotics, but even then an entrepreneur still needs to focus on a very real and specific pain point. In Greenzie's case, the pain point is the cost of repetitive labor solved by automating 52-72 commercial lawn mowers. What is that equivalent in the carbon footprint market? Only additional customer discovery and research will tell. Start with Divya's post, linked in the show notes.  Annnnd, that's 5 minutes. Thank you for listening to Five and Thrive. We provide 5 minutes of quality information, so you can thrive in the upcoming week. Please subscribe to the show and spread the good word!  Resources discussed in this episode: Beta Product of the Week: iStory, Any Distance Event of the Week: Meetup with Gatsby, Lavender, and Gig Room Alpha Product of the Week:  FANFUNDR Companies Worth Applying Too: ATV Job Board Market Analysis of the Week: Carbon Footprint Market Analysis

Session 11 When being a premed is a struggle and there are times you don’t think you are going to make it, remember you can do it. Humor and hustle will get us by. [01:15] Caller of the Week: "Just a little foreword to this rant because being a premed sucks and lot of it sucks and it's hard and it's so lonely. I just want to express some sincere gratitude to both Drs. Gray for all the efforts in making this whole premed experience a little bit more bearable - humble, grateful, excited that this might just spread a little bit of positivity. Initial Interest in Biomedical Engineering When I went to college, I wanted to be a biomedical engineer. I didn't really know what they did but it was probably cool, right? Prosthetics or drugs or whatever nanotubes... I was 17, I just thought I could be part of that. I could graduate in four years, get a job, maybe a Master's but probably not. No big deal - but not medicine. I didn't have anyone in my family in science or medicine but I saw their type. They always talk about grades, how easy everything was. They always documented how many hours they were in the library or Instagram and I wasn't about that "gunner" stuff. Anyway, I dropped out of engineering after about two weeks. It turned out I'm not good at math and I don't like it at all. Not my thing. Thinking Through What to Take But going into the whole chemistry, PhD, the big pharma was a good second bet. Sure it was a bit more school but at least PhD programs in my area, they were funded. I didn't have to worry about loans. I don't really have financial support from my folks. Nothing against them but it's just not my scenario. It was kind of big topic in me choosing these things. But orgo was my favorite class, biochemistry was a close second. I even tolerated PChem pretty well. It was still math but it was about something. It wasn't just numbers on a page and I like that. So I did the thing people do. I got a lab tech job that would help me pay rent. My PI was making these peptide drugs that would convince to cure cancer or Alzheimer's or dengue fever or whatever. I did more blocks and more PCRs than I could count... “I was part of the team... but the whole time, I had this feeling that something was missing here.” I was just grateful to be there. I was part of the team... but the whole time, I had this feeling that something was missing here. It wasn't cutthroat. But the part of the work that I enjoyed the most was this prospect of making a therapy that could save someone. But I got sad, maybe it was selfish, knowing that I'd never meet this person. I would just be at the vent where I couldn't take their hand or high five their kids...but that was the road I was convinced that I was supposed to go on - get a job, settle down, have family, have my 2.5 kids in a white picket fence - the American Dream. Going Labless and Jobless Fast-forward to the week before my Junior year began, I keep doing the chemistry lab nerds thing and then I got an email from my PI that essentially says someone who worked before you came back from being abroad. She started this project so we got to let you go. Now, I'm labless, I'm jobless, I'm pissed off. How am I going to pay rent? I go on a run. I come home. I sing all my feelings out in the shower. And I emailed many chemistry professors as possible to add to my CV and get a job and get into a good grad school. But little did I know that I was going to be premed buddy that day. From Jobless to Having a Job on the Same Day! That afternoon, I got a call from my dad about my mom... I visited them. It wasn't anything serious, probably heartburn. But she's okay. The doc and ED was the second nonprimary care doctor I've ever met. The first was a cardiothoracic surgeon who gave my dad a bypass. But I've never seen a doctor like him before. He was chatting with families between rooms. He was high fiving patients in the hall. I think he's a total rockstar in the midst of all this chaos. I just remember thinking it was pretty different from what I thought those kids tearing textbook pages so other people couldn't have it. It was pretty different from that image in my hear that I thought they were like. Then there's this guy with a computer following the doctor around. So I asked him and the doctor said to me it was his scribe who writes his notes so he can spend his time seeing patients, what he was trained to do, instead of sitting behind the computer. For him, it was like paid shadowing and he's going to medical school next year. Me, not really caring about medical school or not, I just thought this was a job and since I was jobless six hours ago, I asked if they needed more scribes. So I got a job but I really didn't know much about shadowing but looks like I could get paid and I could learn at the same time...ultimately, it was a pretty good ending to my otherwise pretty rough day. An Interest in Premed At that point, I totally caught this medicine bug that all my premed friends couldn't shut up about. This was the stuff that I was missing from lab... at the end of the day, I could see an immediate positive impact that these doctors have with others and I was inspired by that. Caring someone of an ailment is super dope, but at the very least, the physician can empathize, they can educate these people. To me, it  was this perfect marriage of continued education and expertise and just being a human being and I like that. So I kept scribing and I ended up in my premed office... but I still didn't have my MCAT or done some shadowing or volunteering. But I told her I've been a scribe for two weeks. In retrospect, I wasn't prepared and I wasn't expecting someone to tell me I'd get into an Ivy League school. I just wanted some direction. I didn't have any family who had done this before. "I didn't really have a template to go forward but I didn't get any encouragement or direction from this lady. She just said pretty quickly, 'you're not going to get in.'" "You're not that bright," she said. "Physicians are good in biology and you're not. I recommend sales or finance." She then went off-tangent... and then she forgot who I was and just moved on to the next person. Finding His Own Encouragement and Getting into Medical School I guess I just had to find my own encouragement. So like I did when I lost my lab job, I went on a run. And some of my friends were talking about podcasting and that's how I stumbled upon this, the Medical School HQ Podcast. And it's just very nice to have that weekly dose of positivity, hearing these stories of a 40 something single parent of four who went against all odds and got into medical school. And I thought that at least one person who had a story at least somewhat similar to mine, let alone all these people who had so many more challenges that I had. "If one person was able to do it, then there's no reason that I couldn't as well." So I joined that pretty cutthroat premed crowd but I still had this mantra of collaboration, not competition. That was still the goal. I kept scribing my junior and senior year. I joined a master's program. I moved to Manhattan. I did some quality work. I joined a second lab, I hated it, I left after six months. I got married. I joined the third lab. I love the third lab. There now, published a couple of things, you shake a couple hands, you shadow a bit, volunteer for a bit... and got into an MD school last week. The first thing that went through my mind other than sobbing to my wife, been calling everyone who had picked up in the middle of the day during the week, was just to stick it to that random one advisor that I had met five years ago. And I just wanted to tell her that if I get 25 rejections today doesn't matter. I got in and you were wrong. But I didn't do that. Instead, I wanted to spread the thing that got me this far in the first place, spreading a little bit of positivity in the light of "oh, look at this small amount of adversity that I've come around and look who came from it." Instead of sticking it to the advisor. I know Dr. Gray has been digesting a lot of Gary Vee, he's this entrepreneur. Something he always says is "happiness is the ROI, the return on investment of life." And this constant negativity from this three-letter forum that shall not be named or these classmates who are stealing textbooks, just the cutthroat nature of this field makes this process so challenging but it doesn't have to be that way. So I hope I can just spread a little encouragement to you all who maybe just got a D on a test or your peer just called it super easy and they didn't study for it and they got an A. Or if you're planning a wedding. That's challenging. If you lost a family member, if you have a kid or three, or you're taking your unplanned gap year, if you have to apply more than once, or if you just had some jaded premed advisor tell you that you should go and become a used car salesman. Keep hustling because it does improve gratitude. Be thankful for the opportunity you have and you all got this! [14:45] Congratulations! This caller has a very good sense of humor and it's infectious. Congratulations on your admission to medical school! Who could blame you for wanting to stick it to your advisor. It's just sad when you think about how somebody like you, if you had listened to that premed advisor and gone in finance. You could have regretted not pursuing this the whole rest of your life. And what a shame that would have been! You obviously got a lot of hustle and hearing how you picked yourself off after having hurdles and things thrown against you and get right back onto the next thing. You have so much drive and ambition. Clearly, that is why you're where you are now. I love how you go for a run, how you sing in the shower... those are great coping strategies. You have an incredible story from losing your job, going for a run, singing in the shower, and this whole series of things happening with your mother in the emergency room, and six hours later, you had a new job which propelled you to end up going to medical school. That is an incredible story! It just goes to show that with that loss of a job, you could've just decided that maybe work and go into finance. Or you might have just completely changed course and decide to leave science. [17:05] Collaboration, Not Competition It's also cool how you were inspired by that emergency room doc. Yes, not all premeds are that gunner type. It's miserable to be around people who all they want to talk about is their grades, how many hours they were in the library, and making other people feel uncomfortable. It's not who we are, it's not who we want to be, it's not who we should be. As you pointed out in your entry, Ryan who is the host of The Premed Years podcast always talks about collaboration, not competition. And that's exactly what the premed community should be. "Collaboration, not competition -- and that's exactly what the premed community should be." Unfortunately, not everybody is like that. But it's great that you got the opportunity to be in the emergency room. Obviously, it wasn't a good reason you were there because your mom was not feeling well. But the fact you got to see this ER doc high-fiving patients inspired you and made you realize that not all premed students are like that. [19:00] Making a Difference as a Physician It's true. Once you get the medicine bug, you can't get rid of it. It's neat that you got that bug and just stuck with it. It's also amazing how you said about the way in which physicians can be there. Even if they can't cure a person, they can always have a positive impact. I think that's why many of us want to be physicians. "You can make a positive impact even if, at the end of the day, you can't cure anyone." As a neurologist, I am unable to cure a lot of people. But I feel very strongly that my job is not to cure people. That's not why I became a doctor, but I became a doctor to make a difference. You can absolutely make a difference in whatever field of medicine you choose [23:17] Spreading Some Positivity Whether you're having a terrible day or struggling through all sorts of things, we help one another by being there and supporting one another and by being grateful. It's hard not to feel just the weight of the amount of negativity that can come from other people. So anytime there is some positivity, it's wonderful that you spread it around. "Grades don't define an applicant by any means." Certainly, you don't tell a person what their chances are getting into medical school. If any of you have had similar unfortunate experiences with an advisor, listen to our caller's wise words and just keep on pushing, keep hustling, and don't let that drag you down. Don't let that make it impossible for you to see yourself as a physician and to keep on a path you're fighting. [26:15] Feedback on Episode 10 "I was actually going to call myself to make an entry about this because it's been in my mind a lot. Keeping it short, I am a 31-year-old who is applying for medical school now. I'm married and not a day goes by without me thinking about it. And it's nice to know that I'm not alone in this and I do agree that being a woman does carry a different perspective into what having kids in the next few years is going to be like. My husband is very supportive too but I know that some things will have to be done by me and not him. So I worry about that a lot and I did get a lot of comments when I decided to. I'm a career changer too and I got a lot of comments and I started to share that I was going to apply for medical school from family just them worrying asking when we're going to have kids if I'm going back to school now. I guess I just learned to listen to them and not take it to heart. What I realized, and I've been on the premed track for the last four years, I actually went back to doing another undergrad to get better marks that are more competitive. And so for the last four years, I have just been thinking about this and working towards being a competitive applicant and what I realized is that I want to be a mom just as bad as I want to be a doctor. It just happened that they're going to have to happen at the same time because of my age. I pretty much have the next ten years to do both. And so I just learned to accept that. What I did start to do, and I would have some suggestions for the caller. I just started to go try seeing other moms who were doctors. I just thought that seeing women who are doing this on a daily basis, using social media to that purpose, and so I started following a lot of doctor moms on Instagram. There is #mamasinmedicine on Instagram and you can find just amazing posts of women who are doing those. I just figured that if I see it enough, my brain would just get the message that it's possible. "Everybody has a different journey that they figured it out in the end." There's also another blog called Mothers in Medicine. The blog features a lot of women who are in different stages of medicine where they all share their journey. There's also YouTuber called Jenny Le and she is a mother of a two-year-old now and she was applying for residency when she was pregnant. This has just been my coping medicine of soaking these energies in and reading about how they make it happen so that I am ready to just be confident in myself and my husband and I's capacity to make it work and just going for it. It's really nice to know that I'm not alone in this and to hear the caller just telling her story is so much of what goes through my head everyday. So know that you're not alone either. If she feels like that it is something she wants badly as she wants to be a mom, just go for it as I'm going for it. I try to also think of that picture and think of 20 years from now when this is all over and our kids are teenagers and we're doctors and we're going to look back and just see that we're proud of ourselves then our kids will be so proud of us. And we'll set as an example. I don't want to a job that I'm not excited about. I realized that's not what I want that's why I'm going into medicine and to make a difference in people's lives. I feel that'show my life is going to have meaning. So I'm going for it and I hope that she does too." "20 years from now, I'm going to thank me for making this decision and it's all I can hope for. As I said, I want to be a mom as badly as I want to be a doctor." [36:05] Be a Part of this Community! Please call 1-833-MYDIARY and leave us a diary entry. Superman and Superwoman have nothing on you. Sure, they can fly, bend steel, and shoot laser beams from their eyes. But, you can be. And you know what, being is the best superpower. Why? Because, being is the source. Being is the foundation. Being is everything. In fact, whatever you do and have in life always flows from your conditioned state of being. If you want to change what you can do (and the way you do it), and change your circumstances, focus on changing what you are. This is the single most powerful principle you can discover and practice to radically transform any area of your life. It's so powerful in fact, that I was compelled to write three books on the subject. One for grown ups, which you can learn about at justbeitbook.com And, a two-book series for children, which you can learn about at themagicofbeingbook.com But I didn't stop there. I also created simple, fun, and effective tools you can use to put this principle into practice, including instructions on how to make a use a being board - which is a powerful tool for personal transformation. They're available free, through a link in either the kindle or the PDF version of Just Be It!: The Secret to Having What You Want in Life. Still not convinced? Here's what others have to say about the power of being. "I tell you, you will never find your fulfilled desire until you are the desire!" ~ Neville Goddard, The Creative use of Imagination "Before you can do something, you have to be something." ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe "Success is what you attract by the person you become." ~ Jim Rohn "You see there's the difference between sustainable and not, right.  Because this is where people get tired...they're chasing after something and it's exhausting.  But, when you first can be, then you can do and have." ~ Michelle Harris on episode 069 of the podcast "...I could name 10,000 people that have better skills, and they're all starving as a speaker.  They're working on the what.  I work on the who.  Who do I have to be so people will pay and hire me to speak." ~ Dan Lok, multi-millionaire, serial entrepreneur, international best-selling author, TEDx speaker "Men do not attract that which they want, but that which they are." ~ James Allen, author of As a Man Thinketh "A man is a method, a progressive arrangement, a selecting principle, gathering his like unto him wherever he goes.  What you are comes to you." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson Here are more ideas on the power of being. In this episode, you'll discover: Why being is best superpower Two radically different ways to look at yourself and your life that can help you make big transformations so you can begin attracting more of the experiences you want in live The principle that every successful person has realized to help them attract the circumstances they want in life Why all thought leaders agree that being is all you need to focus on to get what you want in life Quote of the Week: Just do it is great advice if you want to do something once.  However, to consistently act in a way that attracts the circumstances you want in life, you have to just be it!" ~ excerpt from the book, Just Be It! 75: Concerns and Questions About Transitioning from PA to MD/DO

OldPreMeds Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 24, 2017 8:44

Session 75 This week’s poster is a practicing PA who has some questions about transitioning from being a PA to starting medical school. These are great questions commonly asked not only by PA’s, but also, by NPs and other nontrads who are in a healthcare-related field and would want to make that switch. [00:56] OldPreMeds Question of the Week: "Just stumbled across this forum. Happy to see there are other nontrads getting back on the horse too. I have a few logistical questions I hope you all could help me with. Background: I'm currently a practicing PA in Emergency Medicine in the ICU for around four years, looking to make the switch to medical school for a number of reasons, which I'm happy to elaborate on if needed. Three kids with a work from home husband, undergrad major of chemistry with cumulative GPA of 4.0 and a PA grad school GPA also 4.0. All med school prereqs essentially met via PA school prereqs. Haven't taken the MCAT yet but started studying and plan to take in the next one to two years. Questions: Would it be more financially wise for me to work an extra three to four years, pay off debt, and save up for cost of living with my PA salary before applying to and starting medical school? Or would it be better to start sooner rather than later, let the debt build on holy amounts of interest throughout med school and residency and have med school debt added on top of that knowing that I'll be making more money sooner? Are there any legal issues or conflicts of interest against me picking up shifts as a PA while in medical school or working during med school in general? Do people do this? Do I really need to obtain shadowing hours given my experience practicing medicine everyday? Should I be going back to school just so I can get science LORs (Letters of Recommendation) or would it be sufficient to obtain letters of recommendation from my physician colleagues and PA faculty members?" These are great questions that a lot of students switching from a career from another healthcare-related field like a Physician Assistant or a nurse have. Let's dig into each of the questions and discuss them. [03:14] Making a Financial Decision Is it financially wise to wait a couple years or do you start sooner rather than later? Yes, it would be more financially wise to pay off the debt before actually accruing more debt. This is a personal question that's hard to answer since you really need to sit down with a financial advisor and look at the lost income from giving up your PA work while attending medical school and the income you'll be making as a resident (which is most likely going to be a lot less than working as a PA) and finally, your work as an attending. What would it take to break even and pay off all of that debt and what that would look like. Be able to work out some different scenarios. Therefore, it seems more financially sound and wise to wait a couple of years. Whether or not it's right for you, it's a personal question that only you can answer. Do you enjoy your job well enough now to give it a couple of years? Are you dead set on going to medical school? If you wait a couple of years, are you going to question that decision? Or should you just jump in now with both feet while you're ready and your husband supports you? These are some things to think about. [04:40] Legal Issues and Conflicts of Interest Are there any legal issues or conflicts of interest against picking up shifts as a PA while in medical school or working during med school in general? Yes, people do this. I recommend that you talk with the medical school as you are accepted and you go through that process. Make sure you're accepted first and then go through the process telling them about you going to medical school and whether you could pick up some shifts. Your ability to pick up shifts is going to be few and far between since medical school is going to be rigorous so being able to work is going to be hard. But it is possible. Your credentials, certifications, and schooling as a PA are fine. If you need to change state, you're going to need to re-license yourself and all of that stuff that goes with moving to a new state. But you should be able to work as a PA. However, be careful with the clear delineations of what you're doing and what scope of practice you're practicing under. Back in Episode 170 of The Premed Years Podcast, I talked with Brad who turned from PA to medical student and he shared his journey, why he was doing it, as well as practicing as a PA during medical school. [06:10] Shadowing Hours Do you need to obtain shadowing hours? Yes. Working as a PA side-by-side with physicians is not "shadowing" a physician. What you see working as a physician's assistant while 99.9% of it is going to be the same, go shadow for 10 or 20 hours. You don't actually need a ton of hours. Just go shadow and see what life is like when you're not working and you're able to just observe and take it all in. You've gotten through your education, PA's work side by side with physicians and even as you're practicing, so you understand it. Still, go get some shadowing hours so you can put it down on your extracurriculars. [06:57] Letters of Recommendation Do you need to go to school just to get science LORs? No, you don't. Most medical schools are going to recognize the fact that you're a nontraditional student. If you ask them, they will say they won't need those science LORs so go ahead and use a supervisor and anybody else who will write a great letter of recommendation for you. [07:26] Final Thoughts These are great questions a lot of nontrads have not just for PA's but those who are also in the medical field. Prof. Celine-Marie Pascale of American University in Washington, D.C. is a sociologist who did a study of mainstream media coverage in the first two years after Fukushima – and not only are her observations stunning, she’s got the data to back them up. Originally presented on Nuclear Hotseat #203, May 2, 2015. Nuclear Hotseat European correspondent Shaun McGee reports on growing response to the BBC Panorama documentary on nuclear safety problems at the UK’s Sellafield facility. Numnutz of the Week: Just thinking about why Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn) thinks that nuclear energy is “pollution free” (?!?!?????) is enough to give a girl the (radioactive) vapors! Has he never heard of plutonium? Or does he think that’s just the name of one of Walt Disney’s characters?

Triangle Tactical Podcast - Competitive Shooting, Mostly

One of the most common misconceptions that I hear from folks who haven't shot competitively, is that competitive shooters shoot ammo that isn't powerful. That isn't really true. Factory 9mm that you'll get from the store is going to be pretty close to the 9mm minor power factor ammo that gets loaded for competition (and some of the folks making re-man ammo don't make it powerful enough to make power factor). I will say that a lot of the factory .40 and .45 ammo is actually quite hot, so it's going to be well and above what's needed for major power factor in competition, but the competition loads aren't light by any means. The News The push for permitless concealed carry has started right here in North Carolina. It's going to require a constitutional amendment, and it's going to be a fight, but we can do it. GRNC has the details here. Sponsor I recently got my hands on some of the "other guys" bullets in a trade with a friend. The difference in consistency between them and my Blue Bullets was surprisingly large. With the Blue Bullets I don't have issues with the coating chipping off, or getting half-cast bulelts, and things like that, which was surprisingly common with these other coated bullets I received from my friend.  I've been shooting Blue Bullets since long before they were a sponsor of the show, and they make a product that I really believe it. Check them out at thebluebullets.com and use the code triangle at checkout to save 5%.  Plug of the Week Just a heads up for the local listeners: Andrew Branca is coming back to Raleigh on August 7th for an NC Law of Self Defense seminar. I've taken this class, and read his book, and highly recommend it. Use the code triangle at checkout and you'll save 10% on the price of the class.
