Ours to Protect is a unique and exciting audio project – a collaboration of local and regional broadcasters from across the country who have come together to tackle climate change, champion climate action, and inform and educate audiences all over Ireland about how they can make a difference. Today on ‘Ours To Protect' John Morley talks to Elaine Nevin, National Director at ECO-UNESCO about encouraging environmentalism in young people. Did you know… A survey conducted at BT Young Scientist 2023 found that more than half of Irish students say climate change worries or concerns them. 91% believe science and technology can help combat the crisis. Young women are more likely to rate the crisis as “very serious.” Why is it important to encourage environmentalism in young people… Sustainability: It fosters a sense of responsibility for the planet leading to a more sustainable future. Awareness: It raises awareness about pressing environmental issues, inspiring youth to act and advocate for positive change. Interconnectedness: Teaching environmentalism highlights the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the impact of human actions. What can I do to help support the promotion of environmentalism in young people? Education: Support environmental education in local schools and communities. Lead by Example: Practice habits to set a good example. Advocate for Policy Change: Support policies and legislation addressing environmental concerns and involving young people in advocacy efforts. We've got a fantastic tale from North America this week, a myth of the Sioux people of MidWest United States. The Sioux nation is one of the largest Native American tribes, consisting of the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota tribes. They traditionally lived in Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin, but were forced to migrate west to the great plains by the French and the Ojibwe tribes. The Sioux of old were a nomadic people who roamed the great plains, following buffalo herds throughout the American Midwest. Buffalos being an important part of their culture – responsible for food, clothing, houses – or teepees and many pieces of jewelry. The people believe in Wakan Tanka, the great spirit. This represents the power or the sacredness that resides in everything – both living and inanimate. Storytelling, as with almost all Native American tribes, is an important part of the Sioux culture. Tales, indeed, legends were passed down from one generation to another as tales told around the bonfire. This story is one such tale. Recorded in the early 20th century by Mrs. Marie McLaughlin, and in her own words, “ told in the lodges and at the campfires of the past, and by the firesides of the Dakotas, these tales are the thoughts of a grave, and sincere people, living in intimate contact and friendship with the big outdoors that we call Nature; a race that is humble, but honest and fair; a sincere, and gravely thoughtful people, willing to believe that there may be in even the everyday things of life something not yet fully understood; a race that can, without any loss of native dignity, gravely consider the simplest things, seeking to fathom their meaning and to learn their lesson”Reference:Title: Myths and Legends of the SiouxAuthor: Marie L. This has given them a lot of time to think about their work, family, and future plans; and many of them say that despite working from home, they have found themselves to be more productive during the lockdown. This has been the case for Erin Branche, who was able to sit down, research, and develop online courses which had taken a backseat to her numerous other projects over the years. She has also coined a new motto, 'there's no someday on the calendar' and the time she spent at home has allowed her to not only revisit shelved ideas, it has also allowed her to spend more time with her family. In this episode, Andrea Heuston is joined by Erin Branche, Founder and CEO of Lash Bash to talk about her passion for beauty and luxury, and the impact and power of determination. Many communities in the world are fighting for their right to live in a safe and natural environment. Some weeks ago, during Young Friends of the Earth Europe’s training in Ireland, we spoke with Lynda Sullivan and V’Cenza Cirefice about their experiences working with communities affected by environmental injustice. They not only reflected on common obstacles and struggles for these communities, but also shared with us some strategies and advice for anyone looking to support them. This podcast is supported by the European Union.
In their super-service quarter-century, Forest ReLEAF of Missouri has moved over 200,000 native species trees from seedlings to nursery transplants to solid ground in communities around the Show-Me-State. In this episode, we discuss how setting up ground rules and a clear framework for organising has made our group more resilient and our work more effective. We introduce the tools that we use to make our meetings more inclusive, and talk about how fostering an egalitarian culture through the conscious establishment of group rules can contribute to challenging the hierarchical structures that have become dominant in our cultures. To find out more on intersectional organising, have a look at the Young Friends of the Earth Europe manifesto for equality and interculturalism: http://www.foeeurope.org/sites/default/files/young_foee/yfoee_manifesto_final.pdf If you want to take part in our direct action training on Saturday, 8th December 2018, follow the link here: https://www.facebook.com/events/751035208602664/

This episode of the Korea Now podcast features an interview that Jed Lea-Henry conducted with Ben Young. They speak about North Korea's outreach efforts to the Third World, and other small non-state actors, during the Cold War. Touching on various case studies – from Puerto Rican independence activists, to the Black Panthers, Fidel Castro in Cuba, German Neo-Nazi's, Grenada, and large sections of the African continent – a picture comes together of North Korea selling its cult of personality, acquiring hard currency, seeking to cause unrest for America and its allies, and competing against South Korea for United Nations votes and international recognition. Ben Young achieved his PhD in Asian history at George Washington University, with a dissertation focussed on North Korea's global outreach and international diplomacy during the Cold War. He has been a Fulbright junior researcher in Seoul, South Korea, and his academic work has been published in the Asia-Pacific Journal: Japan Focus, the Journal of Northeast Asian History, and the British Association of Korean Studies (BAKS). Ben's journalistic work has featured in The Washington Post, The Guardian, Reuters, and NKnews.org. We talk about friendships all of the time. But this week we wanted to talk with the young ladies of TAYF and learn what their ideas on friendship are: How they're managing them? What makes a good friend? And, what they've learned by having a front row seat to their mom's friendships. Also, we sound off on all the folks who need friends this week *cough, cough* Deelishis and Marjorie Harvey. Plus, we have a whole side conversation on the RHOA!
To mark ten years of Young Friends of the Earth Europe, we gathered inspirational & funny stories from those who’ve been involved since it started in 2007.
We invited Iszi Lawrence, comedian and Membercast presenter, to join our guests at a Young Friends' sleepover and record her experience of spending a night at the Museum. In this one-off special of Membercast, follow Iszi as she takes part in an evening of activities themed around the artist Hokusai and Japanese culture. At midnight when the lights go out, Iszi and the guests bed down in the Egyptian sculpture gallery to sleep beneath the colossal statues until morning! If you've ever wondered what it's like in the museum after everyone has left (well, almost everyone) and we've put the mummies to bed, this Membercast episode will give you a taste! Although Iszi is a proper grown-up with a wealth of life-experiences, she was excited and nervous about this adventure–take a listen to hear how she fares spending a night at the Museum! Sleepovers at the British Museum are available to Young Friends, a programme for children aged 8 – 15 years of age. The next sleepover, themed around the artist Hokusai, takes place on 22 and 23 July 2017. Find out more about Young Friends and read our sleepover FAQS. Sleepovers are subject to availability and a ticket fee. Follow Iszi Lawrence on Twitter @iszi_lawrence or on instagram iszi_lawrence
