Wind turbine maintenance expert Garrett Calaway joins hosts Allen Hall and Joel Saxum to discuss his company, Calaway Solutions, which provides comprehensive turbine health audits and inspections. Calaway explains their process for assessing drivetrains, blades, generators and other components through visual inspections, drone imaging, and advanced techniques like borescoping. He highlights the need for impartial "data illumination" to determine the true condition of turbines, often unknown even to operators, and advocates for proactive maintenance over reactive fixes to maximize asset lifetime value. Calaway describes their diverse customer base and how regular audits can benefit owners, prevent issues, validate OEM work, ease transactions, and give insurers confidence by responsibly managing turbines. As we know, wind turbines are a maintenance nightmare at times. And with so many variety of wind turbines, particularly across the United States and the world, it's really hard to know what's wrong with any particular turbine at any particular time. And with the markets consolidating and the number of turbines that are exchanging hands, knowing the health of a wind turbine becomes critical. And that's where Calaway Solutions comes in. Garrett Calaway is the CEO of Calaway Solutions and has been involved in this industry a very long time. In this podcast, Joel and I will have in depth discussions with Garrett. We're going to pick his brain as to where these problems are, how to find them and how to diagnose the health of your turbine. So this is a really great episode. Garrett, welcome to the program and give us a little bit of background on, on where you came from and how you got to this place. Garrett Calaway: Been in the wind business for renewable energy for about 12 years. Started as a technician at Siemens back when it was Siemens, not Siemens Gamesa in its heyday. Done major components. That's actually where I learned bore scoping and, NDT process. I was part of the Siemens engineering engineering group. Used to be called ST. Learned from everybody. Learned from the Danes. Learned from, the original guys that were building these wind turbines in the United States. Honestly, I got really lucky. From there, I ended up at Wanzek. I helped build their major component and renewable services group. Yeah, I just decided that I was going to do this on my own. That I knew how to do it. We take that end of warranty style lockdown. We have that checklist. And what we want to propose to the world is that you do not wait till the end of warranty for this. You start at COD. You go through it, you do a 100 percent check of everything, not just a visual walk down. External blades, internal blades, main bearing gearbox, generator, everything that you could think of, so that you have a real baseline. We want to say we come in and do a 100% And then throughout your warranty contract, but just for easy math, we'll say that your contract's five years. We come back and we do 20 percent of your site randomly. And then by the time we get to the end of your warranty, you don't even need an end of warranty walk down. You already know the problems that you've got, the utility has going on in their sites.
EPISODE #174 | Season 7 Episode 7 - [R] Before The Stage (BTS) is where comedians/ performers talk right BEFORE taking the stage to perform | This episode was recorded Sept. 8th, 2023 | 30 minutes before a show at Mason City Brewing (Mason City, IA) | ENJOY ✌
Today we were delighted to host James Calaway in our office in Houston for a broad discussion on mining, solar energy, and the energy transition. James is a solar and lithium industry veteran with a unique background centered on his desire to help the world reduce emissions and as he describes, “save the planet from killing itself.” He is the former chairman of Orocobre, has considerable experience with Chilean solar projects, and is currently the Executive Chairman of Ioneer. Ioneer is advancing the Rhyolite Ridge Lithium-Boron project in Nevada, which is projected to help power upwards of 50 million electric vehicles. We were thrilled to visit with James. In our conversation, James first walked us through his fascinating background that started with an interest in arms control and traversed co-founding Space Industries, entering the oil business, studying battery technology, investing in Orocobre, a lithium company in Argentina, which became Allkem after its successful growth and merger with Galaxy, retiring from Allkem after its successful growth, and becoming involved with Ioneer. We discuss the difficulty of building on Federal lands and the cost of construction in the US versus China, the future of battery technology, how to approach mining projects from an economic standpoint, and the potential for a future supply-demand issue for lithium around 2028. James shares his experience securing a loan for Ioneer through the US Loan Programs Office and the company's experience with the community and government surrounding their project in Nevada. We also discus responsible mining globally, the opportunities and challenges with hydrogen, James' experience with solar and hydrogen in Chile, and his desire to see the oil and gas industry lower emissions and fully participate in the energy transition. It was a fascinating and wide-ranging conversation and we greatly appreciate James for sharing his time and perspectives. Mike Bradley kicked us off with an update on the markets, noting the major driver this week has been the exceptional earnings from banks and brokerages and that equity markets seem to be in a bit of a “Goldilocks” phase, where the DJIA, SP& 500 and Nasdaq are all approaching record levels last seen in December 2021, despite 2-year yields increasing by 400 basis points. He highlighted that a “soft landing” scenario is gaining consensus and that equities are experiencing a bit of a “fear of missing out.” Mike also reiterated that crude oil markets have repriced back to backwardation and that the recent move higher in crude price is more a reflection of improving demand sentiment. He wraps up by discussing recent news including last week's Denbury and Exxon merger announcement, the irony of BlackRock naming Aramco's CEO to its board, the beginning of oil service earnings season this week with several oil service leaders reporting, and flags that next week's reporting will be heavy natural gas levered E&Ps. Jeff Tillery added to Mike's earnings comments and mentioned the tendency to over-interpret pricing reductions during activity hiccups and differentiating between realized pricing and anecdotal pricing in Q2 results and Q3 guidance. He also highlighted the need for a more nuanced discussion around inventory degradation and that the bar for the oil service sector is set higher for the upcoming earnings season after performing well over the past three months. We hope you enjoy the conversation with James as much as we did. Our best to you all!

Born Mark William Calaway, this ginger giant went on to become possibly the most long-tenured, scandal free pro wrestler of all time: The Undertaker. Don't care about wrestling? Well this episode is still worth your time as this man's career is prolific and unlike any other. Also, I mean... he's a zombie priest with a dayjob at a mortuary, or something? I mean, he's like The Tall Man from Phantasm with some spandex and biker tattoos. Whether you know him as The Dead Man, The Phenom, The American Badass, or Big Evil, Calaway has been integral in the longstanding success of the WWE. Moreover, he helped carry character based, spooky wrestling through the gritty and hyper-realistic "Attitude Era." In this episode we are joined by Micah Rose, more commonly known as his wrestling persona Caesar, of The Panel Discussion Podcast: http://bicbp-radio.com/the-panel-discussion/ Micah also has a new podcast, Damn That's Scary, that can be found here https://open.spotify.com/show/6dNFkHscIpEeHuEzUavabC?si=rU61nR6xQ1KodTqy84KpQQ Did you know "Mean" Mark was trained by Don Jardine and Buzz Sawyer? Jardine was a masked wrestler known as "The Spoiler," and that fancy move 'Taker does walking on the top rope? Yeah, that's an homage to him. We discuss the pre-WWE career of Calaway, which had him actually beaten by Bruiser Brody, and sharing the stage with lifelong friends such as Paul Heyman. His gimmicks there, from The Punisher, to Dice Morgan, all sowed the seeds of the character to come. We then detail Calaway's WWE career, his notable feuds, special effects, matches, and gimmick changes. We also get into the fact that he legitimately feared he would be debuting as The Gobblety Gooker. We wrap things up by discussing the best/ worst Undertaker ripoffs we have ever seen. Terra Calaway speaks by herself on the troubles she's been going through lately and why there's no guest on todays podcast.
For years, Mark Calaway fully lived the Undertaker gimmick. Now, he's finally speaking out as himself, a decision highlighted in great detail throughout WWE Network's Undertaker: The Last Ride. Though it's become one of the network's highest profile documentaries, how entertaining is it to watch Calaway lament all his recent injuries and subpar WrestleMania performances? Do we actually learn anything about the man behind the Deadman? Is it a fitting send-off (temporary or otherwise) for the Undertaker character? We answer all the big questions about this five-part limited series.

Oneness and Peace in Christ 11Don’t forget that you Gentiles used to be outsiders. You were called “uncircumcised heathens” by the Jews, who were proud of their circumcision, even though it affected only their bodies and not their hearts. 12In those days you were living apart from Christ. You were excluded from citizenship among the people of Israel, and you did not know the covenant promises God had made to them. You lived in this world without God and without hope. 13But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ. 14For Christ himself has brought peace to us. He united Jews and Gentiles into one people when, in his own body on the cross, he broke down the wall of hostility that separated us. 15He did this by ending the system of law with its commandments and regulations. He made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one new people from the two groups. 16Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death. 17He brought this Good News of peace to you Gentiles who were far away from him, and peace to the Jews who were near. 18Now all of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us. A Temple for the Lord 19So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family. 20Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. 21We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord. 22Through him you Gentiles are also being made part of this dwelling where God lives by his Spirit.

A serial and accomplished entrepreneur and project developer, Sweet Baby James, Capital Structure Calaway discusses the "un-level playing field" in which US developers compete from a cost of capital perspective, based on the hand-in-glove relationship he sees between industry and government in China, Korea & Japan for the EV/Storage thematic and its implications throughout the entire raw material-to-EV supply chain. The USA lithium landscape has many potential projects but the opportunity set is quite varied by resource type and therefore risk. James helps frame the opportunity set into four separate buckets and the relative considerations - technical and otherwise - in each bucket. He also raises some specific policy ideas for where some small government involvement can help level the playing field from a cost-of-capital perspective with America's Asian competitors.
Made Alive with Christ 1Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. 2You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. 3All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else. 4But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, 5that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) 6For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus. 7So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus. 8God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. 10For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

I love this guy. Of all my friends and associates Jim is one of the most exotic. He makes really big bucks and then he makes a really big difference in the local community and the world by giving it all away to the right causes. Generosity is one of the noblest and most satisfying pursuits for all of us as is evident in this conversation with Jim Calaway. He lives with his wife, Connie, his dog Lacey and his cat Jazzy in a modest house in Carbondale, Colorado. He is surrounded by friends and dignitaries that love and appreciate his company. I am happy to be in Jim's circle of friends. Photo of Jim and Connie and Lacy Calaway: CMC Foundation Original theme by Steve Skinner. Performed by Steve Skinner. Louie Girardot plays bass.
