The James Beard Awards are kind of like the NBA season: They crown the champs, and it seems like training camps start two days later.Making the cyclical process all the more tolerable is how well Milwaukee does — a trend that continued when the James Beard Foundation named its semifinalists earlier this week. Since we're in the back-patting business, that's where we start this episode of the podcast. The nominees fell into two camps, the first of which is the expected announcements. The “Best Chef: Midwest” category is a prime example, with plenty of familiar names on the list:Dan Jacobs and Dan Van Rite of EsterEvKyle Knall of BirchRoss Bachhuber and Sam Ek of Odd DuckJamie Brown-Soukaseume and Chuckie Brown-Soukaseume of Ahan in MadisonThe other individual from our area to earn a nomination is Gregory León of Amilinda, who landed in the category “Outstanding Chef presented by Hilton.” But Milwaukee didn't stop there. We also scored a couple non-restaurant nods, as Bryant's Cocktail Lounge is up for “Outstanding Bar” and the forward-thinking hybrid cocktail lounge Agency (in the Dubbel Dutch Hotel) is in the category “Best New Bar.”We'll wait patiently for the finalists to be announced April 2, and then again for the winners at the annual awards ceremony June 16. In the meantime, here's what else you'll hear about in this episode:Now that the Cheel is no more, you might be looking for other places to get Himalayan cuisine in Milwaukee. Ann's got you covered.Maider Kitchen Restaurant will bring a Hmong-focused menu to Phongsavan Asian Market on North 76th Street. If you're in the mood for a traditional five-course Lao dinner, book a spot at Lucky Ginger's event Feb. 20.The Pfister will throw a 90th birthday gala for legendary chef and author Jacques Pépin, featuring more than 20 chefs from throughout Wisconsin.

Chef Jamie Hoang grew up loving spicy food, lime and cilantro. And that love and those flavors go into her recipes at Madison’s Ahan, a restaurant built on her culinary talent and Lao roots. Now, Hoang’s work is being recognized by the James Beard Awards as a semifinalist for Emerging Chef. We revisit this story as one of our favorite features of 2023.
Nothing says holidays like family and food, and Ahan, a local Laotian spot, has both. We sat down with the restaurant's co-owner and chef, James Beard Semifinalist Jaime Brown-Soukaseume, to ask about her expansion to Williamson's Street, which of her mother's recipes made it to the menu, and even the secret ingredient behind the Laotian cuisine. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.04.14.536742v1?rss=1 Authors: Ozcelik, C. E., Begli, O., Hincer, A., Ahan, R. E., Oguz, O., Kesici, M. S., Ozcubukcu, S., Kasirga, T. S., Seker, U. O. S. Abstract: Peptide therapeutics are robust and promising molecules for treating diverse disease conditions. These molecules can be developed from naturally occurring or mimicking native peptides, through rational design and peptide libraries. We developed a new platform for the rapid screening of the peptide therapeutics for disease targets. In the course of the study, we aimed to employ our platform to screen a new generation of peptide therapeutics candidates against aggregation prone protein targets. Two peptide drug candidates for the protein aggregation prone diseases namely Parkinson s and Alzheimer s diseases were screened. Currently, there are several therapeutic applications that are only effective in masking or slowing down symptom development. Nonetheless, different approaches are developed for inhibiting amyloid aggregation in the secondary nucleation phase, which is critical for amyloid fibril formation. Instead of targeting secondary nucleated protein structures, we tried to inhibit monomeric amyloid units as a novel approach for halting disease-condition. To achieve this, we combined yeast surface display and phage display library platforms. We expressed alpha-synuclein, amyloid beta 40 and amyloid beta 42 on yeast surface, and we selected peptides by using phage display library. After iterative biopanning cycles optimized for yeast cells, several peptides were selected for interaction studies. All of the peptides have been used in vitro characterization methods which are QCM-D measurement, AFM imaging, and ThT assay, and they have yielded promising results in order to block fibrillization or interact with amyloid units as a sensor molecule candidate. Therefore, peptides are good choice for diverse disease-prone molecule inhibition particularly those inhibiting fibrillization. Additionally, these selected peptides can be used as drugs and sensors to detect disease quickly and halt disease progression. Copy rights belong to original authors. DIRECTO A LAS 14 horas.

Back in February, Jamie Hoang and Chuckie Brown were cooking for cocktail-sipping crowds at their Robin Room pop-up, doling out mini veggie egg rolls at Femmestival and prepping to roll out a food cart for the summer. The pandemic changed their plans. This past weekend they opened Ahan at The Bur Oak at 2262 Winnebago St., serving takeout noodles, curry and riffs on crab rangoon. Today on the podcast, Hoang and Brown talk about the unexpected advantages to opening at this stage in the pandemic. Concerned about climate change, Princeton University student, Jonathan Lu, and his friends became excited about a particular solution: Carbon Fee and Dividend. Through Citizens Climate Lobby they learned about a proposed national policy to price carbon and give the revenue back to households. That inspired them to ask, Could this be done in New Jersey? Having a good idea is one thing, but doing all the hard work to make it a reality is quite another. Jonathan and his friends realized they needed help researching New Jersey state law. They also needed to speak with over 100 stake-holders all over the state. They wanted to make sure idea for legislation would appeal to as many different groups as possible. Luckily they found a group of hard-working, intelligent, and creative people who enthusiastically joined the cause. People like Ahan Raina and Aurora Yuan. At the time they were both 15 years old. Our host, Peterson Toscano, chats with Jonathan, Ahan, and Aurora, members of New Jersey Student Climate Advocates NJSCA. They and scores of high school and college students are working on the New Jersey Climate Investment and Carbon Cashback policy. In addition to applying what they are learning in school about climate change, economics, and civics, they are discovering just how challenging it is to devise a bill that appeals to as many people as possible. They are committed to seeing households benefit once carbon pricing begins in the state. You can follow them on Instagram: instagram.com/njclimateadvocates The Art House Irish author, Shirley McMillan wanted nothing to do with climate change. A busy mom with a young child, she recoiled when Peterson Toscano first initiated a conversation with her about climate change six years ago. She did not deny the reality or seriousness of climate change, but it all felt too much. She was also uninspired by the many suggestions for how women can do all the hard work to lower the family’s carbon footprint. Then something changed; Shirley began to see climate change as something more than just an environmental issue; she realized how it is also a human rights issue. Learn more at https://shirleyannemcmillan.com Puzzler Question Like Shirley, your friend, Heather, told you she wanted nothing to do with your climate work. She also had a limited view of what that work looks like: “Don’t take this the wrong way, but I don’t have time for climate work. I feel bad saying that but I work full time and I have two children still in school. I don’t have time for protesting right now” Hear what listeners had to say to Heather. New Puzzler Question You are talking to your friend, Charles. Charles is concerned about climate change but doesn’t know what we can do about it. You explain how carbon pricing is a powerful tool to help us decrease fossil fuel emissions. Before you could say more Charles interrupts, “Are you out of your mind? Did you see what happened in France when they tried that. Those Yellow Vest Protest! It was a political disaster! You really expect that to work here?”How would you respond to Charles? In addition to applying what they are learning in school about climate change, economics, and civics, they are discovering just how challenging it is to devise a bill that appeals to as many people as possible. They are committed to seeing households benefit once carbon pricing begins in the state. After hearing from over 100 stakeholders though, they realized they needed to make adjustments to their original policy proposal. In a state with many businesses and industries, they heard how their idea might impact New Jersey businesses. They came up with a compromise that has made the bill better for more people in New Jersey. While they worked on the policy though, Student Climate Strikes broke out in North America and beyond. Why do policy work instead of strike? Both Ahan and Aurora share insightful responses. “People are definitely talking more about climate change because of the work of these climate strikers,” says Ahan. He adds, “You can build as much public interest as you want, but then someone has to do the work of building the policy.” Aurora believes policy is the best way to address climate change, but not the only way. “I do participate in the climate strikes...I think policy though is the real concrete solution because we can’t get any tangible change without creating policy and systematic change.” She understands why many of her peers are furious about the world they will inherit. For Aurora though, that anger can get in the way of the conversation. “The more angry you are and the more angry words you say to other people, the less they are willing to listen to you and the less they are willing to work with you...I think having a tone of calmness and willingness to speak with others and listen to where others are coming from, and then cooperating with others is really, really important right now." Jonathan, experienced great success working with high school students on climate policy. In this episode he offers excellent advice to climate groups who want to work with young people. Welcome to the very first episode of "Movies and More With Shivam Pota". This is my very first episode so there will be a couple of quite moments and slip ups however as more of these are made the better they will become. In this episode my friend and fellow film buff, Ahan stops by and we discuss "Solo: A Star Wars Story" , "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" and the British comedy film "Swimming With Men". We also discuss the trailers for "Shazam", "Aquaman" and" Godzilla King Of Monsters". The final name of the podcast was chosen after the episode was recorded this means that you might hear the old name for the podcast. However I made sure to re-record the opening with the new name. I hope you have as much fun listening as I had making this. Please note the next episode will have time stamps. Thanks for listening to the podcast, Shivam

On this episode of the OnintheBackground podcast, medical student and close friend Ahan and I spoke about “No-Jab, No Play” and the vaccination debate. I do want to give a big thank you to the kind people in the Anti-Vaccination Australia Facebook Group for giving us some of their biggest arguments against vaccinating and for being so kind and helpful to us here on the OnintheBackground podcast. We tried to be as unbiased and fair as possible to those who are anti-vax and simply tried to put out the facts against three of the biggest anti-vax arguments that were given to us by said Facebook group who are linked down below. Hopefully, we have not offended anybody as at the end of the day this is simply the opinions of two teenage university students, we are not trying to manipulate anybody and encourage everyone to do their own research into both sides of the argument before making a decision on whether or not to vaccinate your children. Thank you very much for watching and be sure to ask me on Twitter or in the comment section any questions regarding this or future podcasts.
