It's time to watch a film from Don Bluth's dark period - that series of movies stretching from post-All Dogs up until Anastasia, and encompassing four little-loved films. While our hosts do not remember the film particularly fondly, our guest has fond memories, so we've got a good range of opinions going into this one. What did we end up thinking of it, in the end? Laura Donaldson, is a PhD, CDBC, KPA CTP and the owner of Four Paws, Four Directions Dog Training & Behavior Consulting, LLC at https://fourpawsfourdirections.comThe episode will focuses on THE IMPORTANCE OF RELAXATION FOR PUPPIES (& ALL DOGS). Topics covered include mat training for puppies, calming enrichment activities and the cognitive as well as emotional underpinnings of the RELAXATION RESPONSE that we want to teach our puppies.TEN WAYS TO HELP YOUR DOG LEARN TO “REALLY” RELAX ON A MAT!1. Do not use a clicker or other excitatory marker with mat training – if you want to use a marker, use a CALMING one like “Niiiiice,” or “Gooooood,” said in almost a subliminal tone of voice.2. Do the “Be Still/Reward Nothing” game on the mat. No movement, not even a wagging tail.3. Every time you place a treat down on the mat (because we're feeding the mat, not the dog), ask your dog to TAKE A DEEP BREATH. The sequence would be:Calming Marker -- Ask the dog to TAB -- Place treat on the mat4. Give your dog a LickiMat spread with baby food, squeeze cheese, xylitol-free yogurt or even an overripe banana on his/her mat. There is science & hard data backing up that calm repetitive licking induces both a physical & neurochemical “feel good” sensation that is very soothing.5. Do some massage with your dog on the mat.6. Do Tellington TTouch Ear Slides with your dog on the mat.7. Give your dog a stuffed, frozen Kong on his/her mat.8. Dogs use social mimicry to interpret their environment, so if the human stands by the mat and practices relaxed, deep breathing, dogs will often imitate what their human is doing.9. Have your dog on their mat & plug in a pheromone dispenser nearby.10. BE CALM & RELAXED YOURSELF AND CHANCES ARE THAT YOUR DOG WILL BE (MORE) CALM & RELAXED!!Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/puppytalk)

Brim explains why leaving an abysmal tip deserves a receipt of a nasty beat down when undeserved and why some tacos are just plain superior to others. Cameron is joined by animator and project manager Ese Oteze from the Nigerian animation studio Sporedust and Will Mattimoe, local RVA filmmaker to discuss the 2000 classic Titan AE! Released in 2000 by Fox Animation Studios, Titan A.E. (Ae meaning After Earth) starts, as one does, with the earth being totally blown to pieces. Co-directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman (who also worked on All Dogs go to Heaven and Anastasia), Titan AE follows the space construction worker and son of famous inventor, Cale (voiced by Matt Damon) who is found by the nefarious Kroso (Bill Pullman) and his band of space pirates. Cale is revealed to be the living key to a second possible earth and home for humans, and the band embark on an action packed space adventure pursued by BLue Meanies- the Drej, aliens made of “pure energy”. We follow the scrappy band of humans and lizard-like friends as they maneuver for a showdown to determine the final fate of humankind in the universe.
If you've ever watched The Land Before Time, All Dogs go to Heaven, or Jaws IV, you'd recognize the talented child actress Judith Barsi, who had an extensive acting career at only 10 years old. Unfortunately, Judith also had a severely abusive father with a drinking problem who envied his daughter's career. Her tragic death will not be forgotten... We hope you learn something from this episode and will be back next week with another. TW: alcoholism, domestic abuse, and violence towards children.

It is now confirmed that dogs can detect when people are dying or grieving by body language cues and smells. Dogs also know how to comfort people by sniffing out cancers and will instinctively comfort people not only when those people are facing death, but also at other difficult times like depression or job loss. Soldiers with PTSD are often comforted by dogs. Have you experienced a dog instinctively knowing if someone is very ill, dying or otherwise struggling and what did that dog do?
