Show Notes Episode 495: Avon, Amway and Tupperware, OH MY! This week host Dave Bledsoe devises a plan where he recruits two people to pay for his drinks and they recruit two people to pay for their drinks and one of his, everyone profits. (It didn't work because no one likes him enough to buy even ONE drink for him.) On the show this week we took a look back at side hustles in the 70's and 80's (And maybe by some Tupperware.) Along the way we learn that Dave might not be the worst uncle out there? Then we dive into the history of direct sales in America (Buy Farmwhoofer, buy the best!) before we head back to the beginnings of an American institution and how it made generations of American women feel pretty. Then we move right along to the origin story of all those plastic bowls with missing lids in your parent's kitchen cabinets. (Seriously, none of these lids fit any of the bowls we have!) Then we talk about the granddaddy of multi level marketing scams. (Allegedly) And how Amway created something kind of like a cult around selling generic crap and how it is screwing us even today! Our Sponsor this week is Ponz-Co, we promise it's not illegal. We open with the burp to seal wonder of Tupperware and close with Chutes and Ladders who are falling in love with the Avon Lady! For our new October theme we are embracing the spooky season and recapping movies that portray Supernatural & Paranormal Sweeties. Our first film is the dark but cute romance Edward Scissorhands. It stars Johnny Depp as Edward, the unfinished creation of an eccentric inventor. Edward is thrust into society where he meets Kim played by Winona Ryder and falls instantly in love. But, theirs is an unconventional love story, mainly because Edward has scissors for hands and Kim does not. In this episode: we discuss how Johnny Depp makes bondage gear work in unexpected ways, argue whether your name on a Starbucks cup should count as a valid form of ID, and wonder what Edward's other (ahem) appendages are made out of? We are taking you all on a tour of Tim Burton land (for better or worse) to introduce you to Edward Scissorhands.

Door-to-door selling. If you've ever done it, you know it's grueling work. Throughout most of its history, door-to-door selling was considered a man's job. That was before Avon invented the Avon Lady, a concept that revolutionized selling and opened the door for generations of women who wanted to become independent entrepreneurs.Katina Manko, an independent scholar, has written a thoroughly researched book about the history of Avon's distributed sales force model and its lasting impact on our culture. I couldn't help but draw comparisons between the Avon Ladies and their modern-day counterparts in the gig economy. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Katina, and I hope you have a chance to read her book, Ding Dong! Avon Calling! Wow, just saying that brings back memories of my childhood.

Psychotherapist and artist wellbeing practitioner Lou Platt was brought up by her Avon Lady mother and her nuclear engineer father, who also created sets both for their local theatre, and for Lou to perform at home. Basking in her role of the second lead as the Merry Wizard in the school play, Lou went on to become a professional performer, co-founding The Other Way Works, creating playful theatre immersing audiences in their stories. Using autobiography as performance, Lou absorbed herself in a role very similar to her mother, but despite her love of performing, she also suffered deeply from performance anxiety. This, in combination with her own experience in family therapy as a child, helped inform her decision to become a therapist. Lou has now founded her own company Artist Wellbeing, and strives to enable all types of artists and performers to not only take radical care of their mental health and wellbeing, but to also reach and maintain their fullest creative potential. Lou shares her journey with disarming honesty and authenticity, offering perspective in times of crisis and ideas for us to reflect on our past and look to the future. Hi, this is Hayley Camille, the writer of the Avon Calling Radio Show. This podcast is based on a series of crime novels that I began writing in 2013. The first episode, which you'll hear in this podcast, was nominated at that time for an Aurealis Award, which is a speculative fiction award in Australia, after it was first published. Since then, Avon Calling has grown to become a 20-book series, that spans two seasons so far. The audience response to the whole series has been amazing, so we wanted to bring an audio production to you as a whole new way to experience the story. With our production team, along with an incredibly talented cast of voice actors, The Avon Calling Radio Show is bringing this fictional world to life. Let me tell you a little bit about the show. Picture this... 1943, at the height of WW2. A lone vigilante is on a revenge mission to take down the New York City mob. I'm talking blood, guts, bullets and gritty crime. Dark alleys and heroin addicts, extortion and murder. Prostitutes. Violence. Gangsters. Nasty stuff. But this podcast isn't all just Harlem sunsets, flinging shivs and round-house kicks to the head, although, there is a lot of that. Avon Calling will take you on a journey of lost love and ultimate redemption. It's a complicated love triangle wrapped in dark comedy with knives on the side. Our vigilante has a very personal vendetta against the bad guys. A secret identity. Killer moves. But here's the twist... our anti-hero is everything you don't expect. She's a doting mother. She's the perfect wife. She's an immaculately groomed, social butterfly with a heart of gold. She runs charity fundraisers. She bakes cookies. And the kicker... she's the best neighborhood Avon Lady you've ever met. Occasionally though, when she knocks on a door, she's not there to make someone look pretty. She's there for revenge. The scene you are about to hear, is found midway through our first episode. In this scene, our vigilante Avon Lady decides to make a house call to some unsuspecting gangsters. They really shouldn't answer the door. I hope you enjoy our showcase, thank you so much for listening! Before women’s liberation and the feminist movement of the 70’s, women’s career opportunities were limited. If they were not satisfied being housewives or homemakers, societal norms disallowed them to pursue other avenues. It’s no wonder, then, that when Avon came calling, women answered. This sales method that was based on door-to-door sales became one of the most popular and successful avenues for both women and the company that provided the products.

In this week’s episode of “Marketing Today,” Alan talks with Douglas Zarkin, who’s been vice president and CMO at Pearle Vision since 2012. Under Zarkin’s leadership, Pearle won Effies in the Health Care Services category in 2015 and 2016. And in 2017, Zarkin and his team took home a Silver Clio for Pearle’s “Small Moments” equity campaign. During his conversation with Alan, Zarkin touches on his drive to make an impact on the trajectory of the companies he works for, the difference between the “need to haves” and the “nice to haves,” and that while he admires the transformative power of Apple, he wonders if they’ve started to drink their own Kool-Aid (there’s a marketing metaphor for you). And despite the fact Amazon has a lot of retailers shaking in their boots, according to Zarkin, it’s the marketers willing to face that acid test who will succeed. “Amazon is not a retail killer,” says Zarkin. “What Amazon is, is basically a mirror that any brand that is doing a mediocre job meeting the emotional and rational needs of a consumer need to be looking at themselves through.” Highlights from this week’s “Marketing Today” podcast include: Zarkin at the crossroads: how he came to understand the power of truly applying yourself. (1:34) It’s true, Zarkin was an Avon Lady. (3:29) Zarkin notes, “Retail is not dead — bad retail is dead.” (5:22) For Zarkin, it’s not that happy employees mean happy customers. It’s that valued employees mean valued customers. (6:53) Zarkin talks about Pearle Vision’s Effie and Clio success. (8:55) Geotargeting is effective and efficient. (10:42) Zarkin on the right way to use digital and big data: “Data doesn’t make decisions.” (15:34) Delivering the marketing narrative. (19:36) Zarkin on his admiration for the NFL brand. (21:02) Support the show.

As we unpack this legend about a cross dressing assailant attacking a woman in her home, issues surrounding gender, violence, and safe spaces are bound to come up. In this episode we take a look at the history of people posing as members of the opposite sex and examine the lasting effects that old attitudes, fears, and prejudices have left on modern society. The damaging discourse of deviance surrounding issues of gender still shows up today, creating discrimination against the transgender community and the continued prevalence of violence against women. Who is really at risk here?
