The incident occurred during active shooter training at Allatoona High School. The officers had been checking on the dogs regularly during their training session, but the air conditioning in Officer Neill's patrol vehicle malfunctioned, causing the temperature to rise rapidly. Despite attempts to save Chase's life by officers and firefighters, he succumbed to heat-related injuries. K-9 Chase was a Belgian Shepherd trained in various tasks such as narcotics detection and criminal apprehension. His body was being held at the Cobb County Animal Shelter, and a necropsy was planned at the University of Georgia....for more on this tragic story visit mdjonline.com     Story 2: dismisses   A Cobb County judge ruled that Corbin Scott Engler acted in self-defense when he was accused of murdering Katie Lambert at a gas station in Acworth in 2021. Chief Judge Gregory Poole granted Engler immunity from criminal prosecution after determining that three individuals had threatened Engler, mistakenly believing he was harming his child. Lambert climbed onto the hood of Engler's car as he drove away, but she fell and sustained fatal head injuries. The judge found that Engler had a reasonable belief that force was necessary to protect himself and his family. The charges against Engler were dismissed, and he expressed relief at the outcome.     Story 3: tryouts   The Cobb County Sheriff's Office conducted tryouts for new riders to join their mounted patrol unit. Deputies participated in the tryouts by riding Duke, a Belgian draft horse from Texas, and showcasing their skills in an obstacle course. They were also assessed on their ability to care for the horses. The mounted unit has various responsibilities, including crowd control in busy areas like Truist Park. The unit's formation aims to enhance law enforcement capabilities in diverse assignments.     STORY 4: atwater   Tracey Atwater, the executive director of LiveSafe Resources, a prominent organization supporting survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault based in Marietta, is set to leave on June 30 to pursue a new opportunity. Mallori Bruning, the chief administrative officer, will serve as interim executive director until a permanent replacement is found. The LiveSafe Resources Board of Directors has formed a Transition Committee to identify a suitable candidate for Atwater's position. The organization remains dedicated to its mission of serving survivors, and a staff support committee has been established to assist employees during the transition. The council unanimously voted to appoint her to represent Ward 7 for the remainder of 2023. Young, who works as a part-time college and career adviser at Campbell High School, was sworn in by Municipal Court Judge Phyllis Gingrey Collins. The vacancy in Ward 7 arose when Lewis Wheaton resigned due to moving out of his ward. Young expressed gratitude for Wheaton's service and highlighted his thoughtfulness in public service. She brings experience as an economic development consultant and has been involved in various community initiatives in Smyrna. Young holds degrees from Vanderbilt University and Georgia Tech   Story 6: pope   The Lowe brothers, Nathaniel and Josh, both Pope High School alums, have a history of intense competition in various sports and activities. However, they have never played against each other in a baseball game. This will change as Nathaniel's Texas Rangers face Josh's Tampa Bay Rays in a three-game series at Tropicana Field. The brothers, along with their parents and a large group of relatives and friends, are eagerly anticipating the series. They previously played together on their high school team and spent time in the minor leagues in the Tampa Bay Rays organization. However, Nathaniel was traded to the Texas Rangers, and now they will finally have the opportunity to compete against each other at the major league level..       Story 7: wrestler   Zion Rutledge, a talented athlete from Hillgrove High School, made history in his senior year as a wrestler. After winning his first state championship in the 215-pound weight class the previous year, Rutledge aimed to defend his title. Despite wrestling for only 2½ years, Rutledge's intense athleticism and leadership made him a standout on the mat. He helped Hillgrove win its first Cobb County wrestling championship and went on to successfully defend his state title, becoming a two-time champion. For his remarkable achievements, Rutledge was named the 2022-23 Boys Wrestler of the Year by the Cobb County Wrestling Association. He is accused of fatally shooting 23-year-old Dacari Early at an apartment complex in March. Nash allegedly shot Early multiple times with a Glock 43X handgun following a verbal dispute. He was arrested the day after the shooting in Rome, and is currently incarcerated there. Nash faces charges of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He also has additional charges from Floyd County and holds from the Cobb and Hamilton County sheriff's offices......stay up to date on this story at mdjonline.com     Story 2: 95 units   A developer is seeking approval from the Smyrna City Council to expand a previously approved apartment complex by adding 95 units. The Creekside Towers development, located off South Cobb Drive, plans to increase the unit count from 200 to 295. While the building's height would remain the same, the space for amenities would be reduced, and additional underground parking would be included. The city planning staff and planning commission have recommended approval of the application. If approved, construction is set to begin in winter, and the tower would consist of various unit types. The developer has also pledged to reserve four units at reduced rates for city first responders.     Story 3: council   The City Council is set to vote on appointing Kathy Young to represent Ward 7 for the remainder of 2023. The vacancy in Ward 7 was created when Lewis Wheaton resigned after moving out of his ward. Mayor Derek Norton and council members have expressed support for Young's appointment. Young, a part-time college and career adviser at Campbell High School, has a background in economic development and civic involvement. The city charter mandates the filling of the vacancy, and the process for a special election was discussed but deemed impractical. Young's appointment will be determined in the upcoming council meeting.   We'll be right back   Break:   ESOG– Dayco - Elon   STORY 4: seniors   The nonprofit Senior Citizen Council of Cobb County organized the Free Resources for Seniors Expo at the Acworth Community Center. The event aimed to connect seniors with no-cost or low-cost services to enhance their lives. Booths provided information on various topics such as hearing impairment, mental health services, power bill discounts, Medicaid/Medicare fraud, home sharing, and senior independent living homes. The expo allowed seniors to ask questions and gather valuable information from professionals without being solicited. The Senior Citizen Council of Cobb County serves as an advocacy group for seniors in Cobb County, collaborating with the county government and providing programs and events.       STORY 5: mccoy   County Administrator Michael McCoy was reportedly fired by four members of the Dougherty County Commission due to allegations of population loss and failure to attract major manufacturers to the county. However, many skeptical individuals believe there are deeper reasons for McCoy's dismissal. McCoy had previously demonstrated exceptional performance as manager of the county's landfill and had gained respect from state officials and county employees. However, an incident in 2018 involving County Commissioner John Hayes and McCoy during an educational field trip resulted in controversy. McCoy filed a lawsuit against the county, claiming a hostile work environment, which was settled out of court. Other incidents involving the commissioners' actions and expenses have also emerged. These incidents have led to speculation about the true reasons behind McCoy's dismissal. Attorney General Chris Carr's office has asked for an explanation from the County Attorney, and is looking closer at this case.   Story 6: cannabis   Trulieve Cannabis Corp., a medical cannabis dispensary, has introduced fast-acting nasal spray products to its lineup. The nasal spray allows for quick absorption of low-THC cannabis into the bloodstream, making it beneficial for patients with epilepsy and severe Parkinson's disease. Trulieve offers different types of the nasal spray using indica and sativa cannabis subspecies, each producing different effects. The spray comes in various sizes and prices, ranging from $35 to $120. Trulieve's Marietta location has seen steady business since opening, with customers expressing relief from using their products. He was awarded a $500 scholarship to support his Catholic high school education. Additionally, Paige Cunningham received the inaugural KofC Rising Star Scholarship from St. Joseph Catholic School. The athletic director, Matt Williams, expressed his pride in this achievement, emphasizing the importance of building relationships with students, families, and the community. The school promotes character development and encourages participation in community service. North Cobb also offers a class on sportsmanship and emotional expression for coaches and athletes. Positive Athlete, founded by Hines Ward, awards college scholarships to high school student-athletes. Additionally, several student-athletes and coaches from various schools in Cobb County were honored for their positive attitude and leadership.   Story 9:  Walker   Charlie Condon, a first baseman/outfielder for the Georgia Bulldogs baseball team, has been invited to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team summer training camp. Condon, a native of Marietta, will compete with other college players for a spot on the final 26-man U.S. roster. The camp will include 56 top non-draft eligible college players and will feature a four-game intrasquad series in North Carolina. Condon, who had an impressive season, was named a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy. He was also honored as a second team All-American by Collegiate Baseball and named SEC Freshman of the Year. The total budget is approximately $396 million, a 1% increase over last year. The general fund, used for normal operations like police, fire, and public works, will increase by 7.95% to $73.7 million. The council is expected to adopt the budget on June 14, with a public hearing scheduled for June 6. The recent tax assessment error will be corrected, and homeowners will see a property tax credit from the state on their bills. Property taxes will fund 23.1% of the general fund budget, and the city plans to take $14.7 million from the Marietta Board of Lights and Water. The largest portion of the budget will be spent on public safety, with the police department receiving 29.2% and the fire department receiving 21.8%. Isaiah Cox from Stone Mountain, a third-year pharmacy major at Florida A&M University, aims to become a pharmacist. Sydney Redmond from Conyers, a freshman at the North Carolina A&T Honors College, plans to major in health sciences and become a dentist serving underserved communities. In partnership with a local radio station, the Delta Community-V103 HBCU Scholarship Program awarded a total of $20,000 to four winners. Another scholarship period will open in August, with two more students receiving $5,000 each in November.     Story 3: teacher   Candace Torrence, a fifth-grade teacher at Burruss Elementary School, was named Marietta's Teacher of the Year. Torrence, who has been teaching for 13 years, was inspired to become a teacher by her aunt and has a deep passion for educating young children. She was recognized for her dedication and the positive impact she has on her students' lives. Superintendent Grant Rivera praised Torrence for her exceptional teaching methods and the love and compassion she shows her students. The company announced the indefinite closure of its taproom and paused all operations. Founder Scott Hedeen expressed gratitude to the local community for their support, especially during the pandemic. He mentioned that the craft beer industry has changed significantly since the brewery's opening in 2012, with challenges in attracting younger generations and a decline in wholesale beer. Hedeen emphasized the need for a better location and stated that they are actively searching for a new one. No specific timeline was provided, but updates will be shared on social media.       STORY 5: food   Happy Helpings, Georgia's Summer Food Service Program, will be offering free meals to children at three Cobb County public libraries during weekdays in June and July. The programs offer opportunities to learn about the area's history, explore the battlefield, and experience living history demonstrations. Saylor brings a wealth of experience to the role, having worked with athletes at various levels of football. He previously served as an offensive assistant at Georgia and coached notable players such as Matthew Stafford, Aaron Murray, and AJ Green. Saylor has also worked with current NFL wide receiver Michael Gallup. Prior to joining Kennesaw State, he held coaching positions at Division II Limestone, Presbyterian, and Northeast Mississippi Community College. Saylor, a Newnan native, played quarterback in high school and holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia.     Story 8: softball   In the NCAA Division II national championship series, North Georgia secured a series sweep and claimed their second D-II championship by defeating Grand Valley State 3-0. Junior right-hander Kristen Davis pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing five hits and no walks. Although she didn't record any strikeouts, Davis controlled the game by inducing 14 groundouts. North Georgia took the lead with an RBI single by Sophie Mooney and added two more runs in the following inning. Hannah Forehand, Mallory Parker, and Katie Ward, all local standouts, contributed to North Georgia's offense. Through the "Georgia's BEST" program, a partnership between Cobb schools and the University of West Georgia, hundreds of educators are pursuing master's and specialist degrees. The program allows teachers to earn advanced degrees with the school district covering the expenses, and the University of West Georgia offering discounted tuition and fees. The initiative aims to improve teacher recruitment and retention, alleviate student debt, and enhance the quality of education. The program has received bipartisan praise and has seen significant interest from teachers. Cobb County plans to expand the program in the future.....read more about this program at mdjonline.com   Story 2: dobbins   Sean David Glover, a 42-year-old Air Force Staff Sgt. who worked at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a violent assault on his girlfriend. A Cherokee County jury found him guilty of aggravated assault — strangulation. Glover entered the victim's apartment last June, allegedly concerned about her contact with her ex-partner. He unlocked her phone, became angry, and physically assaulted her. The victim suffered injuries including a broken wrist, bruises, and marks on her neck. Glover also choked her to the point of blacking out and later raped her. The judge sentenced him to 15 years in prison followed by five years of probation, with additional conditions and restitution.     Story 3: lactation   The Georgia Supreme Court has unanimously ruled that a state law requiring lactation care providers to obtain a license is unconstitutional. The law, passed in 2016, required a state license and limited it to businesses with a certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Plaintiffs, including a certified lactation consultant and a nonprofit organization, argued that the law violated their rights to due process and equal protection. They also contended that the law lacked a substantive connection to public health and safety. Chief Justice Michael Boggs reversed the trial court's decision, finding in favor of the plaintiffs, stating that the regulation did not advance the public purpose in a reasonably necessary manner. Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who was sued in his capacity, praised the ruling and has formed a commission to review the necessity of licensing in various professions in the state.   We'll be right back   Break:   CU of GA– Dayco   STORY 4: weapons   The Georgia Supreme Court has dismissed a lawsuit brought by five University System of Georgia professors challenging a 2017 amendment that lifted the ban on weapons on public college and university campuses. The professors argued that the amendment was unconstitutional as it encroached upon the authority of the Board of Regents. The trial court initially dismissed the lawsuit, and the professors appealed to the state Supreme Court. In a unanimous decision, the court ruled the lawsuit moot because the Board of Regents had adopted weapons-carrying policies consistent with the amendment. The certification signifies their commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the sports community. Compete Sports Diversity, which aims to unite the world through sports and supports LGBTQ+ athletes and organizations, offers the Sports Diversity Leader Training and Certification Program. The organization also hosts summits, provides DEI training, and connects sports organizations with partners and convention bureaus. The Longhorns achieved a record-breaking season with a 28-2 record, the most wins in program history, and captured the Class AAAAA state title for the first time. Kell dominated in their region and made a strong run in the state playoffs, culminating in a 61-53 victory over Eagle's Landing in the championship game. Sellers attributed the team's success to the improvements of key players, strong leadership, and a cohesive team dynamic. The team's experience in a tournament in Las Vegas also played a role in their growth and resilience.     Story 8:  P.O.Y.   Isaiah Collier, a standout basketball player for Wheeler High School, led his team to its third state championship before heading to the West Coast for college. The Southern California signee averaged impressive stats of 20 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals per game. Collier received numerous accolades, including being named the Cobb County Boys Basketball Player of the Year and earning titles such as McDonald's All-American, co-MVP of the game, and Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year. He is regarded as one of the best high school basketball players to come out of Georgia and will join Southern Cal's highly talented freshman class. The suspects led the police on a chase but eventually crashed the vehicle. One suspect dropped a gun while fleeing, and officers were able to locate and apprehend him. Another suspect was pursued by an officer but managed to escape. Three guns were recovered during the incident. The other two suspects were found at a hotel after surveillance and were taken into custody with the assistance of the Violent Crime Bureau....check in at mdjonline.com for updates on this story.   Story 2: ged   The Cobb County Adult Detention Center has implemented an on-site high school equivalency diploma program for detainees, eliminating the need for transportation to other jails for testing. The program aims to reduce costs and provide a familiar environment for the detainees. Capt. Yaminah Holt, overseeing jail programming, expressed excitement about the program and announced that one detainee had already passed the first on-site GED test. The initiative is a partnership between the Cobb County Sheriff's Office, CobbWorks, and the Cobb County School District. The program aligns with Sheriff Owens' commitment to helping detainees maximize their time in custody and increase their productivity upon release.     Story 3: drowns   A tragic incident occurred in Lizella, Georgia, where a four-year-old boy from Marietta drowned in a pool during a gathering at a neighborhood home. The child, identified as Viraat Gosain, wandered off and fell into the pool. Paramedics rushed him to a nearby emergency room, but he was pronounced dead shortly after 3 p.m. Lonnie Miley, deputy coroner, stated that it appears to be an accidental drowning. As the death involved a child, authorities are likely to schedule an autopsy. Viraat would have celebrated his fifth birthday on Thursday. The incident is a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of water safety, especially around young children     STORY 4: abwa   During their May meeting at the Marietta Conference Center, the Marietta Charter Chapter of the American Business Women's Association awarded scholarships to Abi Halls and Abby White. Both recipients are Georgia Tech students, with White pursuing a Masters degree in Architecture and Halls studying Civil Engineering with a focus on Supply Chain. The Marietta Charter Chapter has been actively supporting Cobb County for over 50 years by granting annual scholarships to deserving women and acknowledging outstanding business leaders who make a positive impact on women in the community. ….we'll have more in a moment:     Break:   ESOG– Dayco   STORY 5: b to b   Cobb Schools have achieved back-to-back national championships by raising over $770,000 for the American Heart Association (AHA) during the school year. This amount broke the 44-year record for AHA fundraising campaigns. Cobb County School District surpassed the second-place district by over a quarter-million dollars. Mountain View Elementary and King Springs Elementary were the top-raising schools in Cobb, contributing $57,971 and $57,210, respectively. The funds raised support the AHA's research and outreach programs aimed at addressing high blood pressure, CPR education, nutrition security, tobacco, and the youth vaping crisis. The AHA's Kids Heart Challenge engages elementary students in physical activities to raise awareness and funds for heart disease research, while middle and high school students participate in the American Heart Challenge. Nationwide, districts have raised over $58 million through these programs this year....for more on this story visit mdjonline.com   Story 6: P.O.Y.   Crystal Henderson, senior guard for Kell High School, became the most decorated player in the program's history by leading the team to the Class AAAAA state championship. As a result of her exceptional season, Henderson was named the 2022-23 Cobb County Girls Basketball Player of the Year. She averaged 25.4 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals per game. Henderson received first-team all-state honors and the Class AAAAA Player of the Year award. She surpassed 2,000 career points, becoming the all-time leading scorer in Kell basketball history. Henderson's No. 30 jersey was retired alongside her brother's No. 0. Winning the state title was the most cherished accomplishment for Henderson, who scored 29 points in the championship game.   Story 7:  C.O.Y.   Kandra Bailey, the head coach of the Kell High School girls basketball team, was named the 2022-23 Cobb County Girls Basketball Coach of the Year after leading the team to a 26-5 record and their first-ever Class AAAAA state championship. Bailey took over the program in the previous season and motivated her players to seek redemption after a loss in the state semifinals. She challenged the team with a tough non-region schedule, and despite some setbacks and injuries, the players adapted and learned from their experiences. The Cumberland Community Improvement District (CID) plans to implement this autonomous vehicle initiative, with routes including the pedestrian bridge over Interstate 285 and the Galleria campus. The program is scheduled to begin in July and run for eight months until March 2024. The AV shuttle buses will operate Tuesday to Friday and either Saturday or Sunday, providing five hours of service per shift from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. This pilot program is part of the Cumberland Sweep, a transit and trail network being developed around the commercial area. The Cobb-Marietta Coliseum & Exhibit Hall Authority has approved the program, and a soft launch is planned for June 26, followed by a community-wide launch in July.         Story 2: symphony   The Georgia Symphony Orchestra has announced its 2023-2024 season schedule, featuring a diverse range of performances. The season opens on October 28, 2023, with "An Early Grave," showcasing works by composers who met an early death. Classical performances on February 24, 2024, will feature Mozart's Concerto for Clarinet and Brahms' second symphony. On May 18, 2024, "Beethoven's Universe" will celebrate Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with soloists selected from a national competition. The holiday season will be marked by the Holiday Pops! Chorus performance on December 2, 2023, and a Gospel Mass at a later date. Jazz enthusiasts can enjoy performances dedicated to Burt Bacharach and Hal David, as well as The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Vanguard Orchestra. The GSO will also host sensory-friendly concerts and youth orchestra performances. Season ticket sales began just a coupler days ago on the 25th. For more details, check out MDJonline.com       Story 3: CU of GA   Darby Dryden, a recent graduate of Marietta High School, received a surprise scholarship worth $1,200 from the Credit Union of Georgia. The scholarship was awarded based on Dryden's essay titled "Where #DoYouCU Making a Difference," which focused on the credit union's hashtag, #DoYouCU. Dryden's essay highlighted her contribution to the Books for Africa Club at MHS, where she donated over 14,000 books to children in Africa. Scholarship applicants were required to submit letters of recommendation, transcripts, and resumes showcasing their extracurricular activities, community service, and work experience. To find out more about this scholarship program, visit CUofGA.com.   STORY 4: sentenced   Two individuals involved in an armed robbery that occurred in March 2020 in south Cobb have been sentenced to prison, according to prosecutors. Jada Hill, a 20-year-old from Stone Mountain, was found guilty by a Cobb County jury on charges of armed robbery, hijacking a motor vehicle, and aggravated assault. She received a 10-year prison sentence followed by 10 years of probation. Another defendant, Devante Porter, pleaded guilty to similar charges prior to trial and was sentenced to 5 years in prison followed by 10 years of probation. The incident involved the robbery of a male victim at gunpoint at Kingsley Village Apartments. Hill was found to have coordinated the meeting, ensuring the victim was unarmed and had cash. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.   Commercial : CU of GA   STORY 1 convicts:     A jury in Cobb County has convicted a Buford man, Robert Lorenzo Cox, on charges of vehicular homicide and other related offenses for a 2020 car crash that resulted in the death of Smyrna Police Officer Christopher Ewing. Cox was found guilty of first-degree vehicular homicide, failure to yield, open container, and tampering with evidence. The crash occurred when Cox's vehicle, a Chevrolet Tahoe, failed to yield and made a left turn in front of Officer Ewing's police cruiser while he was conducting a traffic stop. Officer Ewing was fatally injured in the collision. Authorities determined that Cox was under the influence of alcohol at the time. Jurors heard witness testimonies and reviewed dash camera footage during the trial. Cox, who had been released on bond, was taken into custody after the verdict. Sentencing is scheduled for next month.       Story 2: relieved   The family of disbarred lawyer Richard Merritt expressed relief with the sentence he received this week. Merritt, who was on the run for eight months, has been sentenced to life in prison plus 5 years for the murder of his mother, Shirley Merritt. A DeKalb County jury found him guilty of murder, aggravated assault, and possessing a weapon during the commission of a crime. Richard Merritt had previously pleaded guilty to stealing settlement money from his clients and was due to serve a 15-year sentence. However, he cut off his ankle monitor and became a fugitive. The court was shocked by his violent act, especially considering his mother had supported him during the trial. The Merritt family welcomed the verdict and felt the punishment was appropriate for his actions.       Story 3:   The Cobb County District Attorney's Office has announced that it will not retry Justin Ross Harris for murder after his conviction was overturned by the Georgia Supreme Court. Harris will continue to serve a 12-year sentence for sex offense convictions related to an affair with a minor. The murder conviction was overturned due to the wrongful use of evidence of Harris' extramarital affairs. The DA's Office cited the unavailability of crucial motive evidence in their decision not to retry him. Harris' attorneys maintained that the death of his son, Cooper Harris, was an accident, and the dismissal of charges confirms it was unintentional......we'll have more in a moment.   Break:   ESOG– Dayco-Ted's   STORY 4: replaces    Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens has appointed David Jones as his new chief of staff following the arrest of former chief of staff, Maj. Braxton Cotton, on insurance fraud charges. Cotton has been reassigned to the Adult Detention Center Division, and an internal investigation is ongoing. Jones, a civilian, will oversee various divisions, including communications, community affairs, information technology, and project management. He brings extensive executive experience and holds degrees in management and global business. Jones will begin his role on May 28, and Sheriff Owens expressed enthusiasm for his appointment, highlighting Jones' skills and understanding of the department's goals.  .....get more on this story at MDJonline.com       STORY 5: exhibit The Mountain View Regional Library in Marietta is hosting the Georgia's Response to the Holocaust: Survivors and Liberators Exhibit until June 26. Presented by the Georgia Holocaust Commission in collaboration with Georgia Public Library Service, this banner exhibit highlights the courageous stories of Holocaust survivors and liberators who either were or became citizens of Georgia. To further explore the legacy of Georgians and their connections to the Holocaust, a special event will be held on June 21 at 2 p.m. The event, featuring guest speakers from the Kennesaw State University Museum of History and Holocaust Education, will delve into the history of the Holocaust and the experiences of survivors and other Georgians during World War II. The event is open to individuals aged 18 and above. He will be joining Kennesaw State after previously playing for Alabama and Georgia. Holt will reunite with coach Antoine Pettway, who was part of Alabama's coaching staff when Holt played for the Crimson Tide. Kennesaw State is coming off their first ASUN Conference championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. Holt's addition will help fill the void left by several transferring players from Kennesaw State.     Story 8: waller   New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones and tight end Darren Waller are developing a strong connection during their offseason training. Waller's impressive athleticism and route-running abilities have caught Jones' attention, making him an attractive target. Jones appreciates Waller's size, speed, and versatility. Waller also admires Jones' leadership qualities and work ethic. Jones has organized extra throwing sessions for his teammates, showcasing his dedication to improvement. The success of this quarterback-tight end tandem will greatly impact the Giants' performance in the upcoming season. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.   Commercial : CU of GA   STORY 1 shooting     A shooting incident at a north Cobb home resulted in one man's death and another being injured, according to the Cobb County Police Department. The incident claimed the life of 28-year-old Marietta resident Anthony Jones, Jones, along with two other individuals, attempted to rob two men who responded by defending themselves with gunfire. Police responded to a residence on Buckline Court in the Noonday area after getting a report of a person being shot. They discovered a black male, identified as Jones, lying in front of the home with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. Investigations indicate that Jones, along with 20-year-old Darius Butler from Cartersville and an unnamed third suspect, had planned to commit an armed robbery against a 25-year-old man from Kennesaw and a 24-year-old man from Woodstock. The intended victims defended themselves, shooting Jones and Butler during the incident. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. Butler, injured by gunfire, is now in police custody. He faces charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault, and murder. Keep an eye on MDJonline.com for more developments in the case.         Story 2: gas   As Memorial Day weekend approaches, gas prices in Cobb County have seen a slight decrease over the past six weeks. The average price per gallon in Cobb is currently at $3.27, down from $3.37 in April, according to AAA. Georgia's average price per gallon has also gone down by 13 cents compared to a month ago. Georgia motorists are now paying around $49 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline, which is nearly $14 less compared to last year.   AAA reports a decline in gas demand and a decrease in domestic gasoline stocks, which could potentially lead to further reductions in pump prices. AAA advises drivers to maintain their vehicles, combine errands to limit driving, and drive slower to save fuel. As is generally the case, prices typically rise during the summer months due to increased travel and demand.       Story 3: Fire   The Marietta Fire Marshal's Office suspects that a semi-truck was intentionally set on fire earlier this week. Responding to multiple 911 calls, the Marietta Fire and Police Departments arrived at a shopping center on Cobb Parkway South in the early morning. The fire was swiftly extinguished, and fortunately, no injuries were reported. Investigators believe that the incident involved vandalism, with several trucks and trailers targeted. Specifically, a 2018 Peterbilt and a 2017 Freightliner were set ablaze. Anyone who has information about the incident or the individual responsible is urged to contact Lt. Richard Franklin of the Marietta Fire Marshal's Office or the Georgia Arson Control Hotline. A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator. This lounge offers a quiet and comfortable space for mothers and infants attending Braves games and other events at the park. Located between the Left Field Gate and Section 141, the air-conditioned lounge features rocking chairs, recliners, a changing table, TVs, and expert advice on breastfeeding from Northside Hospital's lactation specialists. Danielle Bedasse, Braves vice president of community affairs, expressed gratitude to Northside Hospital for their support in creating a welcoming place for moms and babies. Lee Echols, vice president of marketing and communications at Northside Hospital, highlighted their commitment to healthy moms and babies and their partnership with the Braves.       STORY 5: 6 years   A former Cobb County Police officer, Robert New, has been sentenced to six years in prison and 14 years of probation after pleading guilty to aggravated assault and first-degree cruelty to children, according to the Cobb District Attorney's Office. New, 51, had 27 years of law enforcement experience and was employed as a Cobb officer at the time of the crime. The investigation began when a concerned individual discovered that the victim, who has cognitive disabilities, had been choked by New. Further investigation revealed that New had met the victim, who had a childhood traumatic brain injury, on a dating site. Prosecutors stated that New choked the woman to the point of her inability to breathe and also attempted to involve her underage niece in their sexual activities. The guilty plea was accepted by Superior Court Judge Kellie S. Hill, with Lindsay Raynor prosecuting the case on behalf of the State and Steve Cook representing New.       Story 6: NCC     In Game 3 of the Class AA state championship series at AdventHealth Stadium in Rome, Jackson Uggla, son of former Brave Dan Uggla, and a junior at North Cobb Christian, seized a golden opportunity. With the score tied 1-all in the bottom of the fourth inning, Uggla stepped up to the plate and delivered. Despite the friendly banter from his former teammates on Mount Paran Christian, Uggla silenced them with a double off the left-field wall, driving in two runs and giving North Cobb Christian a 3-1 lead. This ignited a flame inside him, and the team followed with an impressive eight-run fifth inning. Brock Parker's two-run single sealed the deal, invoking the mercy rule and leading to an 11-1 victory. It was North Cobb Christian's first state title as a GHSA program and a validation after falling short in last year's championship series.   Story 7:  Lowe   Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Josh Lowe, a Pope alum, has proven that his strong performance this season is more than just a hot start. With a batting average of .318, 11 home runs, 34 RBIs, and nine stolen bases, the 25-year-old is showing the potential to become a solid big leaguer. Rays manager Kevin Cash praises Lowe's consistent performance and ability to make adjustments. Lowe was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays with the 13th pick in the first round of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft. Lowe attended Pope High School in Marietta, He played third base and was a pitcher. Moore announced that the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) will now offer residents the option to add their Georgia-issued driver's license and ID to their iPhone and Apple Watch. This allows customers to securely present their digital license and ID at select Transportation Security Administration checkpoints, including those at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Georgia becomes the largest state to provide this capability, offering an easy and secure way for residents to present their credentials without needing their physical card. Governor Brian Kemp expressed his appreciation for the innovative service and expects it to benefit both Georgians and visitors. To add the digital license or ID, Georgia residents need a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch and follow a simple setup process in Apple Wallet….read more about it on MDJonline.com   STORY 2: apartment  ** Authorities are intensifying their search for two homicide suspects following a fatal assault in Bartow County. The incident occurred Tuesda  The attendance zone for McEachern High School in Powder Springs, Cobb County, has historically lacked apartment units. However, the superintendent of Cobb Schools, Chris Ragsdale, discussed changing demographics and the development of 550 apartment units in the area during a Cobb Board of Education work session. Ragsdale expressed concerns about the negative impact of apartments on schools, citing Osborne High School as an example. He mentioned threats to student and staff safety originating from neighboring apartments. Ragsdale acknowledged that the district does not expect zero apartment construction but emphasized the primarily negative impact on schools and graduation rates, particularly highlighting the issue of transiency. Education consultant James Wilson supported this argument, noting that students in permanent housing tend to have higher test scores compared to those in transient housing.          Story 3: arrested    A former student at Marietta High School was arrested on Thursday for possessing marijuana and a handgun on campus. The school's interim principal, Marco Holland, informed MHS families about the incident, stating that a school administrator, in collaboration with the Marietta Police Department School Resource Officer, detained and searched the individual. The former student was found in possession of marijuana and a handgun, leading to their arrest and charges by the police. In response to the incident, the school increased police presence on campus during dismissal for added student safety. Additional officers will remain on campus next week. Further details regarding the suspect and the incident were not available at the time of the report. The new space will allow Cobb residents to experience Polestar vehicles firsthand and take test drives with Polestar specialists. Atlanta's existing EV charging infrastructure and growing demand for electric vehicles made it an ideal choice for Polestar's expansion. The new location at 950 Battery Avenue adds to the wide array of shopping and entertainment options at The Battery, a mixed-use development surrounding Truist Park. Polestar, headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, aims to accelerate the shift to sustainable mobility through design and technology. Visitors to Polestar Atlanta can test drive the Polestar 2 model and learn about local electric vehicle incentives. The company plans to open more locations in major EV markets across North America.    STORY 5: Library  The Gritters Library in Shaw Park, northeast Cobb, will be closing on June 17 to make way for the construction of a new library and community center. The new facility, costing $9.8 million, will house the Gritters Library along with space for the county PARKS department, community meetings, and CobbWorks workforce development programs. Funding for the project comes from the county Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), state and federal grants, and the county's fund balance. Batson-Cook Construction will be the contractor for the design-build project. During the rebuild, patrons can visit the Mountain View Regional Library as an alternative. The new Gritters Library aims to meet the evolving information needs of the community, focusing on workforce development, job skills, and lifelong learning.    Break  Elon – Ted's- JRM    STORY 6: Pebblebrook       (pronounciation: (EE-foo-NON-ya  OH-bee-ON-woo)    The Pebblebrook High School senior Ifunanya Obianwu bid farewell to her high school days, reflecting on her achievements and looking ahead to a promising future. The pandemic served as a catalyst for her Ivy League aspirations, igniting a dream that led her to Princeton University. With hours of daily study, Obianwu dedicated herself to debate club preparation. She chose Princeton for its intimate writing classes and abundant resources for undergraduates. English is her passion, and she envisions a career involving writing, possibly as an attorney or journalist. Debate and sports, including soccer, track and field, and cross country, enriched her high school experience. Obianwu's involvement in her church community and her faith have also been significant. As she prepares to embark on her next chapter, she advises incoming freshmen to remain adaptable and open to change.………More community News after this    Story 7: Greek    The Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame is finalizing its voting process to welcome its second class. This year's ballot features 36 newcomers and 64 players from the inaugural class in 2022, including three notable alumni from Cobb County. Hutson Mason, a standout quarterback from Lassiter High School, shattered the state passing record during his senior season. He went on to lead the Georgia Bulldogs' offense, setting a single-season pass completion percentage record in 2014. Adam Meadows, a former McEachern High School star, earned first-team all-state honors before becoming a four-year starter for the Georgia Bulldogs. Meadows had a successful career with the Indianapolis Colts and briefly played for the Denver Broncos. Jonathan Dwyer, who excelled at Kell High School, became the ACC Player of the Year during his sophomore season at Georgia Tech. He was later drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers and also played for the Arizona Cardinals. Other notable candidates on the ballot include Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and former Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Reeves.    Break   Drake – Ingles 9    Story 8: Fire award      The Valencia Hills Condominium Association honored the firefighters and EMTs of Cobb County Fire Station 19 with a Community Service Award at their annual homeowner's association meeting. The fire station, located near Valencia Hills, has been quick to respond to emergencies in the community, arriving in under two minutes to save lives, assist residents in need, and extinguish fires. They have even assisted in the delivery of a baby. In addition, the team recently participated in a cleanup day organized by the Powers Ferry Corridor Alliance to help keep the area clean. Claudia speaks to Saskia Stucki, who sees overlaps between International Humanitarian Law and Animal Welfare Law as providing fertile ground for legal conceptual development. Saskia Stucki believes ‘Animal Warfare Law' offers a way forward for considering how animal welfare and animal rights could better complement one another. Date recorded: 6 May 2020Guest: Saskia Stucki is Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg, Germany. In 2018/2019, she was a visiting researcher at the Harvard Law School Animal Law & Policy Program, where she worked on her two-year postdoctoral research project “Trilogy on a Legal Theory of Animal Rights” (funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation). She studied law at the University of Basel, Switzerland, where she also obtained her doctoral degree in 2015. The resulting book on “Fundamental Rights for Animals” (2016) won four awards, among other the biennial award of the Swiss Association for the Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy. Her research interests include animal law and ethics, animal personhood and rights, legal animal studies and comparative animal welfare law, legal theory, human rights philosophy, international humanitarian law, and environmental law. They consider what it means to be a subject of the law and the extent to which animals, particularly animals in Canada, could be considered as such.Guest: Lesli Bisgould is an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto and is also currently the Barrister at Legal Aid Ontario's Clinic Resource Office where she assists caseworkers at Ontario's community legal clinics with their complex appeals. She worked for several years at a Toronto litigation firm, then left to start her own practice in animal rights law. For ten years, she acted for individuals and organizations in a variety of animal-related cases in the first practice of its kind in Canada.  She now works in the poverty and human rights fields as well. She has argued at every level of court and has deputed before government bodies and committees at every level of government. Bisgould is the author of Introduction to Animals and the Law (2011), the first Canadian law text on the subject, and a contributor to Canadian Perspectives on Animals and the Law (2015), both published by Irwin Law.
