Oceanographer Kristen Davis, an authority on ocean physics and climate sustainability, discusses the growing excitement around seaweed and kelp as tools to combat climate change. Like trees on land, these underwater plants use photosynthesis to absorb carbon dioxide and convert it into organic matter. When they die, some of that carbon may sink to the ocean depths. However, the science is still evolving and there's a lot we don't yet understand about how seaweed farming might impact carbon sequestration. Davis shares insights into the ongoing research and its promise on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast with host Russ Altman.Have a question for Russ? On today's episode, we are finally starting to get into the groove and the energy of what Sex and the City really becomes! Carrie is 34 with the stamina of a 19 year old, because the thought of getting RE-dressed to go out to a club after already being cozied up in bed is outrageous. We also discuss our love of Rosie O'Donnell and how she shaped a generation into a bunch of Broadway-loving nerds, possible alternate endings to the SATC series, For the Love of Dilfs, and of course, John's Barbie journey continues! Miranda continues to rub Amanda the wrong way (in every wrong way possible) and apparantly Kristen Davis was only available to film for 3 hours total for this episode? Things are just getting wilder and wilder. And we're not just referring to the actor who played Reed Carter / Adam Louder! Amanda is standing vigil at Jack's bedside, reasonably confusing the nurse into believing that Amanda is praying for a speedy recovery. Instead, Amanda whispers death threats in his ear, considers pulling the plug, and beats Jack until he dies, leaving Sydney in the doorway to make it clear that she's here to enter the main event plot and blackmail Amanda, while wearing a stunning hat. The in-law relationships continue to be messed up. Jake sleeps with Shelly while Jo walks in at the same time Alison continues to sleep with Billy's father-in-law. They've moved in, as you'll remember, and Alison sneaks into a shrine room to Haley's ex-wife. It makes no sense, so let's just move on. But not before we relish the line delivery of Kristen Davis to Alison: "I'd like a progress report on my father's account." "How do you like living in my house?" Kimberly is now FULLY sane. Nothing to worry about there. Nothing to see here. She just numbs her hand with a bucket of ice, takes a shot of whiskey, and CRUSHES HER HAND IN A WAFFLE IRON to get her bracelet off. When she later is asked by none other than DOCTOR JOYCE BROTHERS, she explains she had an ironing accident. Also, this crushed hand is being treated only by an ace bandage. Okay. Matt is back to his social causes t-shirt, this time celebrating the Tanqueray AIDS ride. He's back in medical school, which remains a terrible plot hole, but didn't pass his test. Except Dr. Michael Mancini returns the falsified records favor and changes Matt's failing 498 into a passing 502. There's some shenanigans happening with Richard. He is taking Jane and Jo to Hawaii, then ships Jane off to New York, and tells Jo that he wouldn't mind a little romance. Bad boss. Jo tells him off, and goes to reunite with Jake, who doesn't stop from sleeping with his dead brother's wife just because his girlfriend walks in. And that, my friends, is Melrose Place. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/melroseplacecast/message

The accompanying interview is also making headlines. Plus, Kristen Davis has given a new interview in the lead-up to the premiere of And Just Like That season two. Along with interesting comments about motherhood and the infamous backlash to her face, she also reacts to Kim Cattrall's return and interestingly alludes to what the original cast really thinks about it. Learn about what all exciting exhibits will be at the North Atlanta Home Show this weekend at the Gas South Convention Center. Two Duluth men are facing murder charges in the death of an Atlanta man who died earlier this month from wounds he sustained in a beating that occurred in December. Master Police Officer Hideshi Valle said Bryan Alvarado and Yeison Alvarado have been charged with allegedly killing Raul Diaz-Villalba. Diaz-Villalba was attacked on December 20 and officers found him unconscious and bleeding with multiple lacerations, a swollen face, wounds all over his head and discoloration. The officers provided aid at the scene and Gwinnett fire officials took him to a local hospital. Diaz-Villalba died on January 14 and the Gwinnett Medical Examiner's Office concluded this week that the injuries to his head were the cause of death. The suspects have each been charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, robbery and false imprisonment. Gwinnett County Public Schools outpaces the state of Georgia when it comes to the percentage of Asian and Latin-ex teachers it has on its staff, but the percentage of people from those communities who serve in principal positions lags behind the student demographics, a staffing consultant told district leaders on Thursday. The stats were presented as part of a presentation on equity in talent management systems that Alma Advisory Group CEO Monica Rosen made to the Gwinnett school board during a work session. The presentation covered a variety of staffing issues, including diversity of staff and employee retention. Despite the underrepresentation of Asian and Latin-ex in leadership roles in the district, GCPS does outpace the state in representation of both groups in teaching positions. Rosen presented data that showed Asian and Pacific Islander teachers make up 4.12% of teachers in GCPS, compared to 1.49% of teachers statewide. Similarly, Latin-ex teachers make up 5.99% of the GCPS teacher workforce, compared to 2.79% statewide. But, Latin-ex people make up 7.8% of principals in GCPS despite the fact that Latin-ex students are the largest population block in GCPS, making up 34.3% of the student body. Meanwhile, there were virtually no Asian principals in GCPS even though Asian students make up 11.5% of the student population. GCPS does lack behind the state in the percentage of teachers who are Black. That figure is 27.15% statewide, but just 23.59% in GCPS. Black people make up 36.17% of people serving in principal positions while Black students make up 32.17% of the student population. White people hold 53.9% of principal positions and 60.2 percent of teacher positions while white students make up about 17% of the student population. An incredibly thin margin separated Brookwood and North Gwinnett again Saturday night at West Gwinnett Aquatic Center. And for the second straight year, Brookwood emerged as the Gwinnett County champion in girls swimming and diving. The Broncos scored 1,186 points, only 11 ahead of North, which is still seeking its first county title. The Bulldogs were second by only five points at the 2022 county meet. Brookwood maintained its long-running dominance in the meet with its ninth straight county championship and 20th in the past 24 seasons. Brookwood got its scoring off to a nice start thanks to its divers — Chloe Brothers won the county title and teammate Kristen Davis was sixth Saturday morning — then the swimmers did their job later in the evening. Sophomore Hailey Dopson led the way with a win in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.75 seconds, and she followed it with a county meet-record in the 100 backstroke with a first-place swim in 55.06. The old 100 back record was set at 55.22 in 2016 by Mill Creek's Katherine Parker. The Broncos also won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:37.36 with Dopson as the anchor on a relay with teammates Nicole Amike, Sophie Hamilton and Emma Greene. Dopson also was on a runner-up 200 medley relay. Braselton's Community Development department is launching a new volunteer work force to help with town events and welcome visitors. Nicknamed the “Bee-Team,” volunteers will be assigned to welcome visitors and help staff event preparation and/or office tasks. An informational meeting is set for January 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the Civic Center, located at 27 East Lake Drive adjacent to the town's parking deck downtown. B-Team members will be asked to complete a brief application, attend an orientation and begin learning local history. For more information, Pinnell can be reached by e-mail at apinnell@braselton.net Gwinnett police said they are investigating a homicide that appears to be domestic related after a shooting Sunday evening at a Norcross area apartment complex. According to Corporal Evanko, Gwinnett police responded to a person shot call at Canopy Glen Apartments just after 6 p.m. The incident appeared to have stemmed from a domestic dispute. When officers arrived on scene, they located an adult male with a gunshot wound who died from his injuries on scene. Evanko said investigators are talking with a female believed to be related to the incident and the investigation is ongoing. The motive for the shooting is unknown. Gwinnett police are asking anyone who has information to share in the case to contact GCPD detectives or crime stoppers. The new year brought a big change for the Gwinnett Chamber's On Topic series this past week. The first installment of the series in 2023 was held on Wednesday and it marked the introduction of Porter Steel as the series new presenting sponsor. Why is that a big deal? Well, it was the first time in well over a decade that someone other than RocketIT has been the presenting sponsor of the monthly information and lunch series. Porter Steel is a Lilburn-based company that specializes in structured steel and architectural metal for construction projects. Company President Cole Porter said the company is interested in helping the community and it sees sponsoring On Topic on to do that. He also said he sees value in the monthly series, where officials and experts give presentations on a wide array of topics ranging from transportation and schools to economic outlooks. 2006 was a really dark time for Tim Allen's career, but that just gives us more material for the podcast! Jordan, John, and Rhiane discuss the flawed and not safe for family comedy "The Shaggy Dog." They discuss problematic issues such as Tim Allen's frequent nudity, Kristen Davis being way too good for Tim Allen, tramp stamps, Spencer Breslin's terrible acting, Robert Downey Junior being on drugs, growling in a courtroom, human-to-dog transformations, and sooooo much more. Later, they do a segment of Tag It and All Sides. Please leave a rating and review on iTunes so other people know that this podcast is worthy of a toast. Check out the 2002 creature feature "Snake Island" as it will be the topic of discussion for the next episode. Thanks for listening!

What evidence is there for the events of The Old Testament? Skeptics of The Bible say the events in scripture are the stuff of fairy tales, but what if the archeological record reveals something much different? There's external evidence that these events happened as well. In this episode we sit down with two fun, energetic, and driven ladies from Nurture the Next. Their mission is to create a future for children and families filled with promise and prosperity. Their vision is to see all children in Tennessee thriving in safe, stable and nurturing families and communities. For over 35 years, the organization's mission has been to support parents and the communities where they live in creating loving homes that make children feel nurtured. In 2008, they committed to using evidence-based program models in our daily work. Nurture the Next's programs are rooted in research and proven to positively impact the lives of both the children and the adults in the home. In 2010, they expanded their direct services to families from three counties to 20 counties in Tennessee. Today, they provide in-home parenting support in 30 counties in Tennessee and offer several statewide programs. Previously known as Prevent Child Abuse Tennessee, they recently took on a new name to put greater emphasis on what they do, rather than what they prevent. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Prevent Child Abuse Tennessee is now Nurture the Next! Kristen Davis, President and CEO of Nurture the Next discusses the why the name change and what they are doing in the community. Our work as an organization is centered on helping families provide nurturing homes and healthy childhoods for their children. But our name for the last three decades, Prevent Child Abuse Tennessee, hasn't made that clear. That is why we are now Nurture the Next. Our new name emphasizes what we do, rather than what our work prevents. Our mission is still the same and we will maintain our affiliation with Prevent Child Abuse America. But we believe our new name will open doors to reach more families who would benefit from our services. Today, we provide in-home parenting support in 30 counties in Tennessee and offer several statewide programs. This hands-on approach is most impactful during the first five years of a child's life when their brain is developing the fastest, which is why we focus our work on families with young children.Parenting is a skill passed down from one generation to the next. When we teach positive parenting practices, the impact is long lasting. It takes more than parents to raise healthy, happy children. It takes communities committed to supporting families, especially those who are most vulnerable. We provide education across the state to share ways that everyone in the community can support strong families and keep children safe, and we advocate for further public investment in evidence-based family support programs, like home visiting. For over 35 years, our mission has been to help families create loving homes where children feel nurtured. Nurtured children grow into resilient, capable adults, and nurturing homes are built by parents who have the knowledge and a positive support system to help them. (here I will discuss our programs that we provide to the community). We provide in-home services, parent mentorship, educational classes, crisis support and more. We are raising the next generation, together. Our programsWe are now Nurture the Next. It's a name that emphasizes what we do, rather than what we prevent. Sara and Misasha sit down with Kibi Anderson and explore the topic of HAIR! Growing up in a country like America, where a lot of standards of beauty are not centered around African culture and African qualities, has a profound influence in the black community. Join us as we examine and understand how significant hair is in our development. Kibi is a black woman, which is relevant to today’s conversation, a storyteller, and has worked in the media and entertainment space for the past 20 years. Currently, Kibi is working for a show called Red Table Talk and running Red Table Talk Enterprises, which is the business behind the hit show starring Jada Pinkett Smith, and her mom and daughter, on Facebook Watch. She is an avid lover of people, and always excited to talk about conversations and topics that are influencing how we act, how we learn, and how we grow. Show Highlights: The rich history of black hair, as discussed in Episode 23 (“Hair & Identity: Don’t Touch the Hair”) of Dear White Women. Misasha recounts her unsettling experiences with people touching her children’s hair on the playground. Misasha has recently overheard her children, ages 6 and 5, state that they would like to have straight hair because they think it’s “really cool”. Pondering what it means to tap into the natural state of our texture. Kibi references Lauryn Hill, a really popular artist from the ’90s, and how she had locks, and beautiful natural hairstyles. Kibi relates a book on natural hair care and the tools to take care of it, and this led to her journey of realizing she did not need long or straight hair. This is the first time she cut her hair off. There were magazines that celebrated black beauty and black hairstyles, but many young women wanted to emulate the styles that they were seeing on television and at the movies. Reviewing different hairstyles, techniques, what it takes to take care of them, how long it takes, and more. “Goddess Locks” - faux locks, a new trend which uses the technique of adding braids to your hair, where you add additional hair, but instead of a braid, it’s a lock. The CROWN (Create a Respectful and Open Workplace for Natural Hair) Act is a California law that legally protects natural hairstyles. Kibi recalls wrapping her hair at night, after getting her hair done in the salon, back in the day, to keep her hair looking good. She remembers sleeping sitting up in bed, so as not to mess her hair up laying it on a pillow. Moisture for hair is so very important. Wrapping your head with silk instead of cotton is more protective to your curls. Misasha shares a story about her roommate, who refused to go outside in the rain because of her hair. Kibi mentions swimming and working out at the gym as other deterrents, because of the expense of black hair care. Salons become a place where people can really talk, as women gather in one space that has various perspectives, journeys, and struggles. Kibi feels that beauty salons and barbershops have become conduits for beginning to talk about broader issues impacting black culture. The power of barbershop books: encourages young boys (ages 4-9) to read books while they’re there, or have someone read to them. Literacy is such an important issue, and you don’t have the same access in certain communities or male figures that are present to help with reading. Kristen Davis from “Sex and The City” adopted two black children and was recently interviewed on Red Table Talk. Hair was one of the biggest challenges that she had to deal with. During the adoption process, there are videos that show parents how to manage a child of a different culture. One of the videos featured a young lady who launched a business teaching different-culture parents how to take care of textured hair. Tips on how to encourage self-pride in children. Intent and imitation being the greatest form of flattery when white people wear traditionally black hairstyles. Different is good. Mike Dewine seeking to abolish the statute of limitations on rape cases. 14:14 – Heisig offers insight into why 15 former Cleveland police cadets have lost their bid to be reinstated as future police officers after they were accused of cheating. 16:58 – Kahoun and Kilpatrick look into the future for what Ohio might look like if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns the Roe V. Wade decision on abortion. The discussion traces the sobering points in a story by Columbus Bureau reporter Laura Hancock. 22:26 – A cleveland.com poll identified the most gerrymandered districts in Ohio, and Kahoun talks about the latest in the battle to redraw the lines for the 2020 election. 26:24 – Reporter Leila Atassi unveils the new direction of the project we call A Greater Cleveland, in which she participates in Open Table and chronicles the path of a group of women who gather each week in support of Alondra Rivera, an 18-year-old woman battling poverty. 37:33 – Reporter Emily Bamforth talks about the week’s revelations about Sherwin Williams, which might be seeking a new headquarters, possibly not even in Cleveland. The team wonders how this might affect any effort to seek cash from the company to help abate lead paint in Cleveland, which is debilitating children. 43:32 – Special projects editor Laura Johnston talks about how Cleveland turned into the Wild West recently, with armed bounty hunters shooting their quarry in a city neighborhood. 44:59 – Johnston also updates the discussion from last week about dangerous things people do in the Cuyahoga River. Last week she talked about two guys rowing a giant, inflatable pink flamingo down the river. This week she talks about how one of those guys called her to talk about the safety precautions he used. 47:47 – Bamforth discusses the tragic death of a 22-year-old Medina woman in the Cleveland marathon. She also explains what she learned about what you can do to reduce the chances that you die when you vigorously exercise. 51:47 -- Cleveland City Hall reporter Bob Higgs makes his first appearance on the podcast to talk about a frightening security breach at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. 54:17 – Higgs and Naymik discuss the ramifications for Cleveland of Philadelphia’s tax on sugary drinks. 56:52 – Common Pleas Court reporter Cory Shaffer offers his take on Joseph McAlpin, who appears to be the first person in Cuyahoga County history to represent himself in a capital case. He was sentenced to die. 1:02:07 – The Cleveland’s Best team of Yadi Rodriguez, Brenda Cain and Kristen Davis describe all that went into choosing the best Mexican restaurant in greater Cleveland, with their thoughts on the best food and drinks. Females are breaking barriers in the field of apologetics today like never before, which is why Hank has dubbed today's guest Melissa Cain Travis and her female colleagues at Houston Baptist University as the five female superheroes of the neo-apologetics movement, a movement more concerned with winning the person rather than winning the argument. In her new book, Science and the Mind of the Maker, Melissa Cain Travis examines what the conversation between faith and science reveals about God, including what she calls "The Maker Thesis," which explains the origin, rationality, and intricacy of nature and the human mind's capacity to comprehend it. Are we in the golden age of apologetics? Listen to find out! Topics discussed include: Hank lauds Melissa Cain Travis and her female colleagues (Nancy Pearcey, Holly Ordway, Mary Jo Sharp, and Kristen Davis) as the five female superheroes of the neo-apologetics movement and some of the most influential ambassadors in the church today (3:00); why mothers should teach their children in apologetics (5:00); is value or significance determined by size? (7:40); addressing the Einstein quote “The most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible” (10:50); the importance of critically and earnestly examining our paradigms rather than limiting the size of our intellectual toolbox (13:30); the majestic three-part harmony between mathematics, the human mind, and the material world (18:15); the implicit racism of the Darwinian paradigm and the importance of having universal standards to determine intrinsic value and equality (19:45); the idea behind the “Maker Thesis” (27:00); Athanasius Contra Mundum, the great church fathers, and finding God's fingerprints in the Bible as well as the book of nature (30:50); the relation between Cicero, Scrabble, and ideas of order (35:20); dispelling the myth that a greater understanding of nature diminishes theistic explanations for existence (37:45); reclaiming critical thinking, the virtue of inquisitiveness, and how to process information in an age of information overload (38:45); the irony behind the Stephen Hawking claim that philosophy is dead (44:00); why mothers need to have a basic understanding of apologetics in order to inoculate their children with an understanding of their faith (47:25); how to prioritize and find time to build your knowledge base and learn apologetics (51:10); the barriers that female apologists are breaking today (55:20); the false dichotomy of having to decide between having a career or having children (1:00:00); Are we in the golden age of apologetics? (1:02:05); neo-apologetics is a brand of apologetics that is more concerned with winning the person rather than winning the argument (1:04:45); how Melissa made Science and the Mind of the Maker different from other books on the topic of science and faith (1:08:00); the value of popular apologetics (1:13:20); the issue of the age of the Earth and why it's important, yet not important enough for Christians to divide over (1:14:45); the importance of Melissa's Young Defender Series, teaching children arguments for the existence of God (1:20:05).

We appreciated the new perspective that Sarah brought to today’s show! Even if you don’t have your sights set on celebrities, her tips are great for any business owner wanting to grow through influencers. Sarah Shaw is a 3rd generation entrepreneur, and she has done it all. She’s worked in the film industry, had a successful handbag business, and is particularly skilled at reaching out to celebrities to get her products more recognition and make more sales. She now teaches others how to do just that at sarahshawconsulting.com. In addition to all of this, she’s a single mom to 9-year-old identical twin girls (so fun!) What made her handbags a smashing success? She started her handbag company on a whim while working in the film business, doing costumes for movies. She had this random idea, which surprised her because she never thought she’d be an entrepreneur. “I am a third generation entrepreneur, but I thought no way would that life be for me! I want a steady paycheck and retirement!” But when small business is in your DNA, it’s hard to fight! Sarah worked on this handbag idea during her nights and weekends, shuffling around her schedule to do it. She asked everyone she had ever met in her life for help! It felt a bit dumb, but she didn’t let the feeling deter her from trying. One of her big early mistakes was that she didn’t have any insights on figuring out pricing structure. When you have a product-based business and are laying out money to create your items, if you’re not correctly pricing your work you’ll go out of business fast. Service-based businesses have it a bit easier in terms of pricing. Their ROI is generally higher, and oftentimes the startup costs aren’t as steep. As her business grew, Sarah knew she had to get on top of pricing. Let’s say a bag cost her $25 to make, she might be selling those wholesale at $50, while a store sold it for $100. She didn’t know how markups worked and her numbers didn’t add up. When she would sell bags person-to-person, she would maybe sell a bag for $30 or $40 and feel good about it because she just wanted her money back. Profitability was not on her mind, and it would have driven her out of business if she didn’t realize her pricing structure wasn't sustainable. The one business aspect she totally DID get right off the bat was marketing. She wasn’t afraid to ask people, even those she knew randomly, if they wanted to buy her bags. Then, friends of friends started asking for a Sarah Shaw Handbag and word spread around LA. Some of Sarah’s friends worked on movie or television sets, and she asked if she could set up a table of her handbags at lunch. She sold a few more bags this way. Over dinner one night, a costume designer friend of Sarah’s was lamenting the fact that she had to outfit Donald Sutherland in only Donna Karan clothes. (Donna Karan was a big name designer in the late 1990s.) Then Sarah had a lightbulb moment: I can get my products to celebrities and let them market for me! Before the age of social media, what a brilliant way to get your product in front of more eyes! “I called everyone I knew who had film connections and started to get bags into the hands of agents and publicists.” As Sarah built business, she started an email list of people who purchased her bags. When she started her celebrity product project she sent an email to her list of 1,000 and told them what she was doing, letting them know that she was getting bags to celebrities. (This was a great practice run to some promotional emails she would be sending later!) About 5 to 6 months after sending those initial bags, Sarah had an unexpected payoff! Liv Tyler showed up on the pages of InStyle magazine holding one of her bags she had sent over months and months earlier. Another day Sarah was waiting in an office and flipped open US Weekly to find Kristen Davis carrying one of her bags, too! “I started sending those pictures to magazines, mentioning the celebrity holding my product, and they started writing about it. Not many people were seeding celebrities with products at that time, but it seemed logical to me. I was sort of a pioneer in that field.” After that, her business took off! She got her bags to over 70 A-List celebrities. She made bags specifically for Julia Roberts in Oceans 11 and America’s Sweethearts. Those bags were purchased by Bergdorf Goodman and Sundance Catalogue, respectively. One of her most business-changing connections, Sarah was asked to make a bag for the Legally Blonde movie. Though the bag was never seen in the film, it did make the cut of an advertising poster. Thanks to the publicity, her company went from half a million in sales to a million that year. Nordstrom bought tons of bags, over $150,000 worth. And Sony Pictures was so excited about it that they sent over mini movie posters to include in each bag. Sarah appeared on E! Entertainment and Access Hollywood. She found that success really builds on itself. “And I have to thank my lucky stars that my friend complained to me over dinner one night!” Sarah is grateful for this unique way to have validated her product. “You need to make sure you have something to keep you going, and to know that you have something more than just you and your mom think is cute!” And Sarah’s celebrity endorsements certainly prove that. How Do You Even Get A Celebrity’s Address!? We had to ask, how do you even go about getting the address of a celebrity!? Sarah’s business started before Internet use really took off. Back then, she just called up agencies to ask who represented So-and-So. Sometimes she would write a letter or send the product with a note, “Could you please get this to Sarah Jessica Parker?” But there was no way to verify if her bag got into the hands of the celeb. Now, Sarah recommends using ContactAnyCelebrity.com. This site has contact information for pretty much any famous person on the planet. Nifty! Filling Huge Department Store Orders A lot of moms listening are thinking that it would be a dream come true for a big store to place orders for their products! Does Sarah have tips to help make sure this mega-business dream would work out? Is it even profitable? Sarah strongly cautions mompreneurs to take any relationship with department stores very slowly. “They’re not always your best friend. They could love you today and hate you tomorrow.” And one return of a mass order from a department store could easily bankrupt your business. Sarah recommends to get a solid base of small stores (think boutiques and shops) who actually know and support you first. Then you could turn to department or mass market stores (think Costco and Target). Really think about working with those bigger retailers as icing on the cake. Sarah explained that these days, most stores work essentially on consignment - though it’s more complicated than that. Usually in the small print they’ll have language referring to either a 30, 60, or 90 day period after which all of your products would get returned if they don’t sell through! For moms who do want to pursue bigger stores, Sarah recommends you test the waters first. Either suggest or agree to a small test run of products before going big time. She says most stores will want to start small anyway, but really encourage it - and be thrilled with the chance! “If it doesn’t go well, it won’t be a financial disaster.” (Hard words to hear, but true!) Picture a store chain with 80 to 90 stores. You might suggest to test your product in their top 10 stores first. Sarah also warns that working with the buyer can be SUPER important. You want to ensure they’re purchasing your best bestseller, not just their favorite product. (And you’ll have to listen to the podcast for a fun entrepreneur family story Sarah has!) Bottom line: you know your products best, and send what you know will work. You’re the expert on your product! Her wisdom was SO good, and applies to lots of areas of business. Hitting $500,000 in Sales In 2 Years One of Sarah’s businesses made an impressive $500,000 in sales during her first 2 years, with just one patented product! “I’m kinda an animal when it comes to business!” Sarah says. She had lots of investors in her handbag company, but had to close the business in 2002 when she lost most of her investors after 9/11. She hobbled along in business for a while, but realized she couldn’t function without that investor money. She tried a few ideas, but realized how much she didn’t know about running business. With Sarah Shaw Handbags, a lot of her day-to-day operations were hired out. So she started teaching herself Photoshop, email marketing, and website building. In 2003 she created the genius idea of a handbag organizer. She patented the product and thought she’d have an easy time getting it into the hands of all the stores she once sold handbags to. Her attitude was very carefree, “I have all these stores who sold my handbags and they love me! I’ll sell a ton!” But none of those handbag reps wanted her new product. ‘It lit a fire under my rear end!” Sarah said. And she thought, “I’m going to show you all you’re missing something huge!” And she set out on a mission. Tenacity in Business Sarah initially kept her focus on high-end stores found in the pages of fashion magazines. (Remember, this was in 2003-2004. There was very minimal search engine optimization and no social media!) Then she had a shift in her strategy. “I started looking for distributors overseas. I wondered what it would be like to work with mass distributors like QVC and Walmart.” She took a closer look and realized that the small stores were really making up the bulk of her revenue. She made enough to get personal revenue for herself, about 85 stores in her 1st year, and at end of 2nd year she sold in 400 stores The business snowballed from there. Much like her handbags, she got the product to media outlets and to celebs. She even made custom handbag hangers for Jennifer Aniston! She also scored a magazine feature in Redbook and sold about 900 hangers after that. “Living in Los Angeles you can get lost in celebrity magazines - the Marie Clarie’s and Harper’s Bazaar - but don’t think about the other magazines that actually have some of the largest reaches in the country.” Needless to say, Sarah’s tenacity paid off. She called a minimum of 10 stores a day trying to get her handbags in. “I’d psyche myself up and gather all my selling materials around me, then I’d pick up the phone. I don’t take no for an answer...as long as they leave the door open, I’m going to keep putting my foot through it.” Setting Your Business Revenue Goals No matter your business, Sarah says you’ve got to spend the time on the avenue driving your business. “I don’t like to think about how much the company as a whole will make. What I like to do is figure how much money I personally want to make and go from there.” A $1M goal, for example, is huge! Take the money goal and divide it by how many products you have to sell to hit that goal. Maybe I need to sell 1,000 products to make $1 million. And you need 100 stores to order 10 units. If you don’t think you can get 100 stores in a year, and they each ordered 4 times a year, you’d still make the money. Break down your goal into more manageable bites and work on hitting those goals one at a time. (Maybe it’ll be something like every 10th store you call gives you a yes, then you know that you need to call 10 stores each day for 10 days to get the number that you need!) In Sarah’s case, she wasn't getting anywhere with the stores she usually sold to. So what did she do? She found sales reps who could help her, and also help her product get licensed. “Suddenly I could turn my one product in twelve colors into something to support my family.” Getting Your Products in Front of Celebrities Sarah has carved out a real space in the marketplace for herself, getting businesses owners connected with celebrities to promote their products. I had to ask if she could give us specific advice on how other women in business can reach out to celebs and actually get noticed but getting products into the right hands. Sarah had a few really solid tips: Know your customer base and which celebs would resonate with them. If you go after Celebrity A but they don't necessarily care about her, no matter how much you push it the news will fall flat because they like Celebrity B better. You really want a return for all this effort! Be clear about why you’re getting your particular product or service to THAT particular celeb. If the celebrity is never seen out and about, it may not be worth your time to source them with products. Make sure you’re sending to celebrities who keep a public profile. (For example, if you make baby hair clips you could send it to someone who just had a baby. And if they’re the type to take their baby on walks in the stroller, it would be a good bet to send your product to that celebrity.) When you find that perfect celebrity, reach out to them and write a honest note about why you want to send them your product. Most of the time celebrities are happy to receive the offer; it’s rare that you’ll get a no. Follow up with the agent or publicists to ensure that the celebrity has received your product. Once you have confirmed that the celebrity has your gift in hand, Sarah thinks it’s great to put up a landing page on your site featuring everyone who has your product. If you do this, it is very important to get the disclaimers right. Something like, “We know these celebrities have received their product as a gift, and were not paid to receive the product as a gift. These individuals have not reviewed this product.” Sarah is a huge fan of the media blitz! She thinks it’s a great idea to write to popular magazines and tell them which celebrities have your product. (Fun fact: you do not need to purchase permission to reprint a photo featured in a magazine. You can simply scan the image into your computer and put it on your press page.) Or, you could write to various bloggers with the same news. The blogger may not necessarily be interested in finding and featuring celebs, but the news that your product is in the hands of an A-lister may give you credibility! If ever you do spot your item in the same picture as a celebrity, Sarah says it’s important to act fast on the news! You want to really publicize the moment. But if you’re worried about not being able to meet demand, you can simply write a note in your shop that, “Because this item was featured in People Magazine, it’s on backorder until blah blah date.” Don’t worry about the windfall, just take it as it comes! I thought her comments about how to handle an unexpected windfall was SUCH a good point! I did something similar with a product in which I did a Kickstarter. I did preorders, and was able to then go place the big order with my manufacturer knowing I already had sales. It makes sense that if you get a ton of unexpected traffic because of a celebrity being seen with your product, use the momentum to take the pre orders or backorders, whatever you call it! That way, you have cash to make the product. Or if you’re a handmade business, now you have the cash to find your assistant to help you produce more product. Leveraging Self-Confidence Calling stores in the blind can be really scary! Or maybe you’ve loved a celeb since you were five and are trying to send them free product. It can be intimidating! What you need is to boost your confidence. Get in the mental space of “We all eat, poop, and sleep!” Celebrities aren’t any different from other people! Store buyers aren’t better than you and don’t know more than you. They’re all normal people with a job that makes them famous. We all know their face, but not really them. Sarah told us a story of one time when taking her kids to the pumpkin patch in LA, Amy Adams was also there with her son. But just outside of the patch, there were tons of photographers standing on hay bales set up like a grand stand taking photos of them. “Celebrities can’t even go to the pumpkin patch without being hounded. It makes it more humbling to think of them as real person. They can hardly have a personal life that isn’t scrutinized.” And of course, it is exactly being in the public eye that makes celebrity attention so valuable - but it’s good to keep this all in perspective. Sarah's Adorable Mommy Moment Sarah has identical twin girls. When they were around 3, they were at grandma’s house to celebrate her birthday. Sarah’s sister said to one of her daughters, “Go and see your mother.” And Sarah’s daughter said emphatically, “That is NOT my mother!” When asked what she meant, her daughter replied, “That is my mama, NOT my mother!” (Sarah said she’d spare us the diaperless twin story that ended up with poo all over their cribs! But safe to say, they never slept in just a diaper again!) Connect with Sarah SarahShawConsulting.com@SarahShawConsulting
