What does it mean to you to keep going? To some, it could mean keep grinding through on the field or court in order to achieve something. Pat joins us today to share what he's learned as someone who has been both a player and a coach, and both as a Christian and as someone that did not follow Christ while he was an athlete.Today, we discuss:Not letting sports define who you areHow Pat relates to athletes from lessons he learned in the pastWhy outside factors play such a big role in athletes' mental healthHow to balance physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual healthBeing a Christian in sports - advantage or disadvantage?Listen to the Keep Going Podcast now!Want some merch? How do you navigate sin? How does it affect you as an athlete? What does the Bible say about sin? Well today we are going to go in-depth on what it means to not only battle against sin, but also realizing that we are all broken, sinful people that need a savior in Jesus.Today I invited on former collegiate baseball player, influencer, and podcaster Zach Dehn to talk about this topic and things that he has learned from sin that he has battled throughout his life as an athlete, specifically in college. Zach is fully transparent and I appreciate that because as he is sinful just like everyone in this world, he trusts in Christ now more than ever and gives his sin to Him. Today we talk about: What it means to him to have a relationship with ChristHow sin affected how he played and how he navigated being an athleteHow difficult it is to live out your faith while being around other athletes that aren't Christian Blending his prayer life and social mediaWhy he started the Hey God PodcastCheck out the Hey God Podcast and Zach's inspirational videos on TikTok and Instagram!NEW MERCH IS NOW AVAILABLE!! Can you expect at least one ACC coach to be on the hot seat in 2023? Collegiate Baseball's '23 Preview | Guts And Glory Will Clemson continue to be the top dog or have other teams caught up and are about to pass Dabo Swinney on the highway to the CFP? With post season success, some minor tweaks to staff and solid recruiting teams will be far more engaging in pursuit of an ACC Championship. Can the ACC continue to be the conference of quarterbacks? Cooper reminds us it takes more than one player to make a team but there certainly are some exciting QB's returning to the fold next season. Engaging With the opportunity to talk about more than just football Will and Jim jump into how men's and women's basketball teams are performing so far. The men's standings speak volumes about the unsettled nature of ACC hoops this season. As of Thursday, January 12 Clemson leads the conference with a 6-0 record followed by Miami at 5-1. Then, there are five teams with 4-2 records including; Virginia, Duke, Wake Forest, Pitt and Syracuse. Only three teams are ranked in the latest AP Top 25. Subscribe Now To ACC Nation Podcast When it comes to the ACC women, as Cooper says, you need to bring your 'A' game every time you play. The top five teams in the standings are; Duke, Florida State, Louisville, Notre Dame and NC State. These certainly aren't the only teams engaging in a battle for the top spot. To join our baseball and softball community for special offers and events text "baseball" to (214) 416-9771A true Texas storyteller, I sat down with Skip Johnson in his office in Norman, OK as he talks baseball, developing young men, hunting, and family. Widely regarded as one of the premier pitching coaches in the country, Skip Johnson has led the Oklahoma baseball program since June 2017. Since taking over the reins after serving one year as the Sooners’ pitching coach, he has led the Sooners to a 85-52 record in three seasons. Johnson’s influence on the program began immediately and has progressed each year. The OU pitching staffs have posted a progressively lower ERA in each of his three seasons in Norman. Oklahoma’s 3.92 team ERA in 2019 was only the seventh team ERA under 4.00 since 1980, and the first since 2015. In his first two seasons, Sooners pitchers posted two of the top five strikeout totals in program history. A total of 14 pitchers have heard their name called in the Major League Baseball Draft over the last four years. In the 2020 season shortened due to COVID-19, the Sooners compiled a 14-4 record and climbed as high as No. 9 in the national polls. In the process, OU turned in some historic performances. Dane Acker pitched Oklahoma’s first individual no-hitter since 1989 against No. 11 LSU in the Shriners College Classic, and the pitching staff combined for a Big 12-record 21 strikeouts in one game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Cade Cavalli became OU’s 10th first-round selection in the regular June Major League Baseball Draft when he was selected 22nd overall. A program-record four Sooners were drafted in the first four rounds, including all three pitchers in the weekend rotation (Cavalli, Levi Prater and Acker). Johnson coached OU to the program’s 38th NCAA Regional appearance in 2018. The Sooners posted a 38-25 record – the highest win total since 2013 – and reached the finals of the Tallahassee Regional. In the process, Oklahoma pitchers set a school record with 608 strikeouts. Outfielder Steele Walker was named a Second-Team All-American by Baseball America and the NCBWA, and pitcher Levi Prater was selected as a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball. Outfielder Kyler Murray, who went on to win the 2018 Heisman Trophy with the OU football team, was the ninth overall selection in the 2018 MLB Draft. Nine players were drafted, including five in the first 10 rounds (Walker in the second round, pitcher Jake Irvin in the fourth round, pitcher Austin Hansen in the eighth round and outfielder Cade Harris in the 10th round). Oklahoma pitchers surrendered the fewest home runs in the Big 12 Conference in 2017 and combined for 531 strikeouts to rank fourth in the league and fourth in OU single-season history. The Sooners’ 9.26 strikeouts per nine innings ranked second in the conference. As a team, OU pitchers struck out 10 or more batters on 24 occasions. Sooner pitchers combined for 17 starts of six innings or more in 2017, including the first two games of the Louisville Regional. Three Oklahoma pitchers were selected in the 2017 MLB Draft. Sooner closer JB Olson was drafted in the 10th round to extend a string of seven straight years with an Oklahoma player chosen in the first 10 rounds. OU saw starter Devon Perez and reliever Vincenzo Aiello selected on day three of the draft. Prior to coming to Oklahoma, Johnson spent a 25-year coaching career in the state of Texas, including the most recent 10 years as an assistant and associate head coach at the University of Texas. Johnson was hired as the pitching coach at Texas for the 2007 season under Augie Garrido, who stepped down from his position as the winningest coach in college baseball in May 2016 to take on new duties in the UT athletics department. In 10 seasons, Johnson helped the Longhorns to seven NCAA Regional appearances, four Super Regionals and three College World Series appearances. During his tenure in Austin, 32 Texas pitchers were selected in the MLB Draft, including 14 in the first 10 rounds and three first-round picks. Johnson also oversaw the development of six Longhorn pitchers who have made it to the big leagues. The Texas pitching staff produced a team earned run average below 3.00 on five occasions and struck out better than 7.5 per-nine-innings in five of his last eight seasons. As Texas reached its second CWS with Johnson on staff in 2011, his pitchers led the Big 12 in ERA (2.35), batting average against (.198) and strikeouts per nine innings (8.28). Prior to his time in Austin, Johnson was the head coach for 13 years at Navarro College of the NJCAA’s Texas Eastern Athletic Conference. From 1994-2006, he guided the Bulldogs to 13 NJCAA Regionals, nine TEAC championships and four regional titles while compiling 450 wins. Johnson has mentored a number of players outside of those he has coached at OU, UT and Navarro, regularly working with three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Homer Bailey of the Kansas Oakland Athletics and Chris Davis of the Baltimore Orioles, among others. A standout baseball player at Denton High School, Johnson began his collegiate playing career at Ranger (Texas) College. After a two-year career there, Johnson moved on to play baseball at the University of North Texas in 1988 before the school dropped its baseball program. He completed his collegiate playing career at UT-Pan American, lettering for the Broncs in 1989 and receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1990. Johnson earned a master’s degree in education from UT-Tyler in 1993. Guest: Associate Head Coach and recruiting coordinator, Sergio Brown. Sergio joined the Titans in July 2019 after coaching at the University of Arizona for four years. Coach Brown is currently in his third go around with Titan Baseball having served on the staff in 2001-03 and 2007-10. He also was a member of the 1995 Titan Baseball team that won the National Championship, the third of the four national championships for Cal State Fullerton. As the recruiting coordinator at Fullerton in 2009, Coach Brown reeled in the nation's fifth-best recruiting class. In 2010, his group was ranked eighth and in 2008 it was tabbed 14th nationally. Some notable names from those recruiting classes Coach Brown was able to convince to come to Cal State Fullerton include current Major Leaguers Matt Chapman, JD Davis and Michael Lorenzen. Before returning to Fullerton's campus last summer, Brown spent four seasons in Tucson coaching under Jay Johnson at the University of Arizona. Brown's second recruiting class at U of A in 2016 was ranked No. 4 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball. Brown's 2018 recruiting class was ranked No. 3 in the country by Collegiate Baseball. The 2020 Arizona Wildcats, stacked with four years worth of recruits that Brown brought to Tucson, had a 10 - 5 record before the COVID-19 pandemic brought the college baseball season to a halt. Based on his recruiting success at Arizona and at Fullerton, it is no wonder why Titan Baseball fans were beyond excited with the announcement he will return to campus as recruiting coordinator and Associate Head Coach. In this conversation with Sergio Brown, we discuss the incoming freshman class of eight high school seniors that have signed national letters of intent. Coach Brown shares his path through youth baseball and eventually transferring to Fullerton, cutting his teeth in coaching under Scott Pickler at Cypress College and what he learned from other notable coaches in playing under Augie Garrido and coaching for Dave Serrano and Jay Johnson. Make sure to stay through the end to hear Coach Brown give a preview of what to expect out of his first recruiting class now that he is back at Cal State Fullerton.▶️ Make sure to visit our website: https://www.calstateomaha.com/▶️ Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/CalStateOmaha▶️ Follow Sergio Brown on Twitter: https://twitter.com/CSFCoachBrown▶️ Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/calstateomaha/▶️ Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/calstateomaha/▶️ Suggest a guest: CalStateOmaha@Gmail.com
In this episode of Patrick Jones Baseball, I interview Nate Yeskie, Pitching Coach and Associate Head Coach at the University of Arizona. Nate Yeskie has helped guide Oregon State to a national championship in 2018, was named Assistant Coach of the Year by D1 Baseball in 2017, was named 2x National Pitching Coach of the Year by Collegiate Baseball in 2013 and 2017. Nate shares a ton of useful pitching information and ways to prepare pitchers for game time. Episode Highlights: How has it been for Nate Yeskie to transition from Oregon State to the University of Arizona? What did Nate Yeskie implement in the fall that maybe was different before he arrived at the University of Arizona? Can video work at times get players, especially pitchers, to overthink? What would he say to one of his pitchers if he didn’t have any information on the hitters that they were facing? Does he ever talk to his players about their individual mental game plan when they are going into a game? Does he talk to his guys about pitchers tipping pitches? When and why did he implement using weighted balls? When he is recruiting pitches, what things must they have going for themselves? What drills help pitchers throw harder? Does he practice PFPs?Is there anything valuable about pitchers fielding the ball? Work with a growth mindset. Nate talks about how he communicates with players. Know when to push and pull with pitchers. When pitchers are struggling on the mound, what does he talk about during mound visits? Be authentic and who you are. The players know when you are fake. What if a pitcher needs to get their arm to align with their release? What does he think about pitch count and innings? Why has he turned down professional baseball jobs? 3 Key Points:Focus on training players with routines of things they can control. Batters are going to swing where they like the ball to be. Pitchers should pay attention to what they like to swing at. When you release a pitch, you become the 5th infielder, 6th if you consider the bunt game with the catcher coming into play. Tweetable Quotes:“We educate them each day, whether it is video, bullpens, anything that we’re doing to try to get them better. We have to educate them through that process in an effort to empower them.” – Nate Yeskie “When it comes to pitching, ‘feel’ is probably the most important thing.” – Nate Yeskie“I think a lot of times coaches can fall into a trap of repeating themselves, or coming up with their own terminology, and what you are now doing I think is force-feeding the athlete to look through your eyes.” – Nate Yeskie Resources Mentioned:● patrickjonesbaseball.com● Nate Yeskie’s Social Media: Twitter● Axe Bat: axebat.com Type in code PJB25 for a 25% off discount See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Connor Seabold played in the 2015 - 2017 Titan Baseball seasons going to Omaha twice, the first in 2015 as a freshman and 2017 as a junior. Seabold from Newport Harbor High was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2014 MLB draft in the 19th round but elected to attend Cal State Fullerton. In just three years he would improve upon that draft position and was selected in the third round (83rd overall) by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2017 draft. As a freshman, Seabold assumed the Sunday starter role later in the season and took over the Friday night starter role a month into his sophomore season. The Friday night starter is the role traditionally reserved for the team's ace and Seabold held that Friday night starting spot for two years. His junior year, Seabold went 11-5 with a sub-three ERA and would go on to strikeout 122 batters compared to issuing 22 walks. Seabold was named an All-American by Collegiate Baseball and first team all Big West Conference in 2017.Seabold's name appears in the Titan record book a number of times ranking 7th all-time for strikeouts per 9 innings and fewest walks per 9 innings in a season. He ranks 5th in strikeout-to-walk ratio in a single season. Spanning his career while wearing the Fullerton blue and orange, he ranks 3rd all time in strikeout to walk ratio, trailing only Thomas Eshelman and Wes Roemer and fourth all time in strikeouts per nine innings. His 294 strikeouts ranks 9th all time and 1.41 walks per nine innings ranks 6th all-time. In 2017, Seabold led the team in wins with 11 victories and strikeouts with the afore mentioned 122 punch outs.In this podcast we discuss getting drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies, going to spring training early, some of his favorite moments while playing for the Titans and balancing a professional baseball career in the eastern time zone while trying to stay up to date on the current Titan Baseball team. Coach Therneau has been named Collegiate Baseball’s Pitching Coach of the Year in 2018, and shares the advice that he has found beneficial in recruiting great pitchers, training players to be their best, and enhancing his hard-working team culture through internal motivation. Episode Highlights: Why did Dave Therneau decide to get into coaching? What does day one look like during Dave Therneau’s program? How does a typical week come across in Dave’s pitching system? What are the most common problems that Coach Therneau notices? Which player elements stand out positively to Dave Therneau during recruitment? What exactly is the “hatter?” How does Coach Therneau go about developing the culture of the team? How does Dave motivate and keep his players competitive during training? How does Dave Therneau prioritize individual development in a team setting? What makes a good bullpen setting? How does he develop command of the pitch? What does a typical week look like during the season for a starting player? What is the latest thing that Coach Therneau is excited about using? Does he have fun traditions that his players enjoy engaging in? Which resources does Dave Therneau find the most useful? 3 Key Points: Video of Coach Therneau’s pitchers helps to improve their delivery. Pitchers are only as good as their strike zone. Self-motivation can be accomplished by getting players to compete against themselves. Tweetable Quotes: “I always talk to them about conditioning the arm. They don’t play catch. I don’t believe in that…I don’t like using that term hear.” – Dave Therneau (10:04:) “If you are trying to go ‘full go,’ whether it be on the mound, roaming short stop or center field…and you do that for a few games, and then you are not training in between, I think it puts kids at risk.” – Dave Therneau (13:38:) “If you want to be a hard-working, tough group, which is what we are trying to build here, we’ve had that, you have to bring those types of kids in.” – Dave Therneau (20:18:) “I try to get these guys to compete individually against themselves.” – Dave Therneau (23:02:) “You are pretty much using 25-27 guys, If you think about a major league roster, I think it’s around that, 25-27. All of those guys are contributors and important pieces to the team.” – Dave Therneau (27:06:) “Every pitch has a purpose.” – Dave Therneau (34:02:) “If something works for a guy, I like to study why.” – Dave Therneau (45:34:) “Teach the game and teaching routines, and I just hope that that is a focus, from all of us responsible for that in baseball, because as a college coach, sometimes we get kids that are unprepared.” – Dave Therneau (52:33:) Resources Mentioned: Ahead of the Curve Podcast Twitter: @AOTC_podcast Dave Therneau’s Contact: gohatters.com/staff.aspx?staff=140 Website and Social Media sites for the show www.aotcpodcast.com Twitter @aotc_podcast Facebook Ahead of the Curve Coaches Facebook group Instagram aotc_podcast

@coachferg Former University of Washington assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Donegal Fergus has agreed to terms to become the associate head coach at UC Santa Barbara, head coach Andrew Checketts announced on Monday, June 25, 2018. Fergus, a former assistant at Seattle University and head coach at Lower Columbia College in Longview, Wash., joins the UCSB staff after spending the past five seasons at the University of Washington."I am excited that Donegal and his family will be joining us," Checketts said. "Donegal has a reputation as a relationship builder and is a proven winner with a pedigree of success. He will bring energy and experience with him and I look forward to working together to get the Gauchos back to the postseason and beyond". Upon Fergus' arrival to Washington following the 2013 season, the Huskies enjoyed one of their most successful stretches in program history. In 2014, Fergus' first season as hitting coach, Washington snapped a 10-year postseason drought after going 41-17 and advancing to the NCAA Regionals. The Huskies also achieved their highest ranking in team history, reaching the No. 5 spot in the Baseball America, Perfect Game and Collegiate Baseball Poll.Washington proceeded to advance to three NCAA tournaments in five seasons with Fergus on staff, including an appearance in the College World Series in 2018 after the Huskies won their first ever Super Regional."My family and I could not be more excited to join the Gaucho family," Fergus said. "Coach Checketts and his family could not be more welcoming to my clan. I'm fired up by the opportunity to be at a place that combines incredible educational opportunities with progressive player development. Coach Checketts has shown that he can recruit and grow players as well as anyone in the country and I am honored to be a part of that and I can't wait to get started!"Fergus' recruiting talents have shined through during his tenure as Washington committed the fewest errors in program history in 2017, recording the third-best fielding percentage (.982) in the nation. Furthermore, the Huskies have had more All-Pac-12 position players honored over the past five seasons than any other five-year stretch in program history. In 2016, Fergus assembled the top recruiting class in Washington history after being ranked No. 10 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 9 by Perfect Game. His 2015 recruiting class came in at No. 15 by Baseball America. His eye for talent also translates at the next level as Washington has had 26 players selected in the Major League Baseball draft since Fergus' arrival, including a school record eight selections in 2014.As a head coach at Lower Columbia College in 2013, Fergus led the Red Devils to a 34-14 record and a trip to the West Region playoffs. He also served as an assistant at Lower Columbia where he helped guide the team to four division titles, a NWAACC championship and a 2005 recruiting class that had seven players selected in the MLB draft.Fergus also spent time as an assistant at Seattle University and was a head coach at Tacoma CC for five years.A native of Powers, Ore., Fergus played baseball at Linfield College where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science and later earned a master's degree in homeland security from American Military University. Fergus is married to his wife, Kim, and they have three children, Seamus, Finnegan and Maclean.

This episode is brought to you by baseballcloud and OnBaseU. iTunes Stitcher Google Play Spotify Summary: In this episode of Ahead of the Curve, I welcome Brad Gore, head baseball coach of the Enid Plainsmen. Coach Gore emphasizes the importance of developing competitiveness on his team , the importance of older players leading the younger, and building practice schedules around team energy during the spring. The value of connecting with players as people beyond baseball is noted as something that Coach Gore has increasingly appreciated the importance of over the course of his twenty-five year career. Show Notes: Guest: Brad Gore, Collegiate Baseball player turned Coach How a high speed of practice at Enid is important and shouldn’t be any different than the speed of games Team dinners and community sports mentoring help build team culture “Playing hard” and leading by example are important to Coach Gore’s ethos How important it is to show players that their coach cares about them as a person as well Players at Enid have to be students first, with older players holding younger accountable The importance of communication within the program Building competition into practice can help build an exciting and competitive team culture; competition can cause quieter players to open up How coaching during the season can encompass things like noting problem areas during games and working on them prior to the next day’s game. What batting practice looks like for Coach Gore’s team How practice timing during the season can be based on team needs because of things like travel schedule and timing The importance of nutrition for the success of weightlifting How the realization of the importance of a relationship beyond baseball grew over the course of Coach Gore’s career How Coach Gore gives Assistant Coaches independence to coach their way as well as responsibility for that independence, and the opportunity to see the non-baseball related parts of coaching 21 Outs can be a fun and competitive practice exercise 3 Key Points: Competitive spirit in a baseball team can be developed through competitive practice. Taking the time to understand players on a level beyond baseball has become increasingly valuable to Coach Gore over the course of his career. A culture of older players mentoring and holding younger students accountable is important to the team dynamic at Enid. Tweetable Quotes: - ¨I played baseball at Oklahoma State, my brother played baseball at Oklahoma State, he made it to AAA, so it’s one of those things that’s been in our family for a long time, and after my playing days were over I just didn’t want to get away from the game, and I wouldn’t change a thing.” – Brad (1:15) - “We practice extremely fast and we move around and there’s really not much downtime, and that’s really one our things: to beat us you’re going to have to outwork us.¨ – Brad (5:20) - “We hold our kids accountable for everything they do, whether it be on the field or off the field it’s all the same to us. – Brad (11:20) - “If I have a really talented Varsity 2nd baseman that’s extremely competitive and I’ve got a little young freshman just trying to find his way, we call it peer coaching, and I totally believe in that. – Brad (14:20) - “[On assistant coaches] I don’t look it as I’m their boss as much as I’m their peer in coaching.¨– Brad (36:30) - “You can put junk in your body and lift as many weights as you want and you’re not going to get any dividends but if you put the right stuff in there and do the right amount of lifting, it’s really going to pay off.¨– Brad (33:00) Resources Mentioned: #FridayFielders Brad Gore bdkcc18@gmail.com Website and Social Media sites for the show www.aotcpodcast.com Twitter @aotc_podcast Facebook Ahead of the Curve Coaches Facebook group Instagram aotc_podcast
Dylan Slocum is the lead singer and guitarist for the punk rock band, Spanish Love Songs. Dylan grew up playing baseball and was even a collegiate pitcher - which gave him a fascinating look into the college experience from the standpoint of a student athlete. Dylan and I broke down the lack of self-care that exists for a majority of student athletes, and how Dylan eventually developed his own path through education and even the punk rock realm.Dylan and I sat down in my kitchen after a hefty Red Robin meal and got right down to business. In the 125th episode of Keep Moving Forward, I interview Mental Conditioning Coach, Author, Speaker, and former collegiate baseball player, Riley Tincher. “Create what you wish existed.” You want to see a change in the way things are? Well, then create it. Establish that resource, be a catalyst for what you wish was different. That’s what Riley Tincher preaches, and you better believe that is what he practices. Knowing first hand the real struggles a person can face when that loss of identity as an athlete becomes real, Riley decided to do something about it. Holding fast to the advice he was given from an important figure in his life, Riley was able to push forward and truly create what he wish existed when he was in the midst of his pain, remembering these words: “Riley, there is purpose in your pain. We do not go through what we go through for ourselves, we go through what we go through to help others.” Riley is helping all who listen in to his story to find their value and worth in something so much bigger than in themselves and than in their sport, and I am so grateful for the chance to help share it. To learn more about Riley, visit https://rileytincher.com/ and follow him on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Because Riley is awesome, he is giving all my wonderful Keep Moving Forward listeners a special discount on his book, Pitching Against Myself, which recounts the story of his journey through faith and sports.
