Artist Joanne Fink lost her husband suddenly to a heart attack in 2011. Of course, he was more than just her husband; Andy was her business partner, IT director, and the person who held down the fort when she went to trade shows and client meetings. This week, we’re talking about the sudden need to take on spousal roles when a partner dies, Joanne’s perspective on sympathy greeting cards, and how to be a creative person… even if you’re not good at it. With four kids in tow, Sarah began walking the unexpected road of widowhood. Today, we're talking about how the reality of death in the military often looks like "compartmentalizing the elephant," how breaking the news of a death to kids is really the first of many conversations, and how faith in the aftermath of loss is more about actively hoping than it is about any religious doctrine. Christina Rasmussen had a master's degree in counseling and psychology, but nothing prepared her for the death of her 35-year-old husband in 2006. One snowy day, after running after the mailman to claim her undelivered mail, she realized that she needed to consciously DECIDE to come back to life after loss. This week, we're talking about her book Second Firsts, why Christina believes devastating loss should be a qualification for anyone leading a support group (it's often not), and why we should all be more selfish in our coming back process. Modern Loss founders Rebecca Soffer and Gabrielle Birkner are members of the "Women With Dead Parents Club." Rebecca's mom died after a car accident and her dad had a heart attack while traveling abroad. Gabi's father and stepmother were murdered in a robbery when a recently released methamphetamine addict was sent to their home to make what should've been a run-of-the-mill home repair. Rebecca and Gabi met and created Modern Loss, a multimedia platform for sharing candid stories about life after loss. Through their book, website, and live events, they're sparking powerful and unconventional conversations on grief... and beginners are most definitely welcome. This week, we're talking about how ANY moment can be a trigger for grief, the surreal feeling of being an adult orphan, and why the time for pretending to be perfect is over. Also, I'm answering a listener question about living in despair. Just six weeks after a family vacation, Richard Pryor received word that his 27 year old son, Richie, died in his sleep. For the next year or two, Richard was caught in what he refers to as the "loop of grief," watching videos of his son and trying to fix the griefs of the people around him. Attending a seminar where the speaker talked about focus and meaning got the ball of Richard's new identity going, calling him to focus on positive memories of his son and work towards making meaning of the loss of his child. This week, we're talking about taking the butterflies, clouds, and rainbows out of grief, taking the initiative to go to therapy as a grieving man, and what happens when people think they possess the rights to your grief. People have a lot of misconceptions about grief professionals—one of the biggest being "They know all about grief, so loss is easy for them!" Nothing could be further from the truth. This week, I'm speaking to Cole Imperi, a dual-certified thanatologist about the grief of grief professionals. She's sharing her experience of the death of her sister in March 2019, how practices like Americanized yoga have "sucked the death" out of healing modalities, and what it truly means to be a death companion. Susan Angel Miller's daughter died suddenly after being diagnosed with a rare form of childhood brain cancer. Not four years later, Susan was diagnosed with a brain tumor and underwent surgery—and the parallels to her daughter's experience are incredible. Susan's book Permission to Thrive recounts the experience of her oldest daughter's death, Susan's experience of having a brain tumor, and the concept of post-traumatic growth, which she is actively harnessing in her process of "coming back." Today, we're talking about how grief is AWKWARD, why Susan never stopped speaking her daughter's name, and how the miracle of organ donation introduced them to a woman named Trish. Death didn't exist in Glen Lord's family—at least not in his childhood. After losing his four-year-old son Noah to complications of a tonsillectomy, he found himself angry and lost. Realizing the need for genuine, accurate information on grief, Glen founded The Grief Toolbox and the Walking Through Grief Support Series to connect with others in the midst of loss. Today we're talking about what it's like to grow up in a death-averse home, the three things we need to recover from grief, and the process of "companioning"—something Glen says you can expect on the 2019 Bereavement Cruise. Herb Knoll walked away from his life after his wife died of pancreatic cancer. In finding little to no support for widowers in books and grief groups, he forged his own path, spending nine years interviewing widowers and experts. The result of his research is his book, The Widower's Journey. This week, we're talking about anticipatory grief and how a number of caregivers fall ill during the caregiving process, what it's like to have losses occur on holidays and birthdays, and what men need in order to grieve. A premonition dream of her daughter's death was became reality in 2009 when Lynda Cheldelin Fell lost her third child, Aly, in a car accident. Shortly after, her husband suffered a stroke leaving him with permanent disabilities. This "double whammy" of grief brought Lynda to a place that she describes as "far more than the '5 Stages.'" Today we're talking about how grief turns us into 2.0 versions of ourselves, how our lives after loss are made up of collateral blessings, and what it's like to go from knowing little about grief to suddenly wearing "grief shoes." Peggy Langenwalter and Trish Comer had their respective rugs pulled out from under them when their husbands died. "Widow" became their new, unwelcome reality and dealing with the loss of a spouse became their daily focus. Cathy Cheshire wants you to change your mind, AKA the thoughts you think about grief. This week, we're talking about the losses that challenged her to develop mindfulness, including the deaths of her two sons, and the belief that grievers can heal themselves when given the right tools to do so. We're covering what it feels like to be punished for telling the truth about your loss, learning to love the people who could not love us, and how grief work is essentially a practice of "giving people back to themselves." Seven years of non-stop losses drove Annah Elizabeth to ask, "What makes some people resilient and others crumble under the weight of grief?" That questioning led her to uncover her system of recovering from grief, The Five Facets of Healing. Today we're talking about how we spend the rest of our lives finding resolution for grief, how the second and third year of loss tend to be the hardest to cope with, and how not believing you're healing is a weird part of the healing process. A suicide attempt was Barbara J. Hopkinson's wake-up call. In a brief moment, she realized she had a choice to make: live and dwell in her losses or choose the long, hard, road of resilience. Sharon Ehlers has a logical mind, one that made her skeptical of energy work and healing when it crossed her path in the aftermath of two devastating losses by suicide. Now, eight years later, she owns and operates Grief Reiki, a business that helps people cope with the energy of grief—an energy that affects the body, mind, and spirit. Today we're talking about what Reiki is and how it can help a grieving heart, how Sharon is bringing Reiki on the 2019 Bereavement Cruise, and what skeptics can do to open themselves up to alternative practices like Reiki. Diane Speer was nine when she was cornered at a memorial dinner by her uncle, who unloaded the traumatic grief of losing his son onto her. From that day on, she was terrified of wakes and funerals. Today, the death her grandmother, the death of her mom, and three near-death experiences (NDEs) have cracked her open to her calling: helping people "transition" from life to death through mindfulness. We're talking about how grief makes us comfortable with death and loss, the role of intuition in grief, and how we can incorporate more self-care into our grief journey. Linda Findlay's daughter, Aubrie, lived for exactly two hours and nine minutes. Aubrie's time on the earth was incredibly short but the impact she left on Linda was profound. What began as a support group to heal from her devastating loss morphed into an aftercare service for funeral homes and a series of books, followed by Linda's biggest undertaking yet—the Bereavement Cruise, now in its third year. She's on a mission to show grievers that joy and grief can coexist. Today we're talking about how rituals change as years go by, how important it is to acknowledge our losses (even when no one else will), and how the Bereavement Cruise got its start!
