Robert Murray M'Cheyne died at the age of 29. Yet his life continues to inspire the servants of Christ today, and his passion for holiness, and sincere godliness, stand as a testament to the grace of God made effective in an otherwise weak man. This week we look at M'Cheyne from three angles, taking in the shape of his life, the character of his labours, and finally the special love he had for the Jewish people. The event was a spectacular celebration of good music, delectable food, and vibrant people coming together. Attendees were treated to a delicious array of gourmet buns, each crafted with unique flavors and fillings, showcasing the creativity of Jonathan Eagar. Unfortunately, our very own Noluthando, a much-anticipated participant, did not live up to the expectations this year, leaving some fans a bit disappointed. Despite this, the overall spirit of the event remained high, as there were plenty of other highlights to enjoy. Laughter and camaraderie filled the air, and fun was indeed had by all who attended, making it a memorable occasion for everyone present.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

To me, there's a single word that immediately comes to mind when describing Clare Hillier's approach to hosting - 'artful'. With a professional background working for various media platforms, along with running her own brand storytelling consultancy, Clare and her partner Sean in 2020 purchased a 70's era house in Blairgowrie in Victoria's ever-popular Mornington Peninsula region, with hopes to transform it into a one of a kind, design-led holiday retreat. After a period of time camping out in the property to better understand its idiosyncrasies, they spent 18 months renovating and reconfiguring the home. Following that, Clare lovingly crafted a brand framework that would go on to closely inform the way in which guests experienced the house, from the selection of original artwork adorning the walls to the way in which their now trademark welcome negroni would be presented. The name of the property, Camillo House, was another product of this creative process. Clare has learned a great deal in her 6 or so months as a host thus far and it was an absolute delight catching up with her recently. I really hope you enjoy our chat today.

Enhancing Biodiversity and Resilience in Intensive Farming Systems: Results from an ETH Zürich-IFPRI Collaborative study Co-organized by IFPRI, ETH Zürich, and Bayer DEC 6, 2022 - 10:00 TO 11:30AM EST The growth of our global food production capacity over the past century is unprecedented, and has been facilitated by advances in crop breeding, mechanization, intensification, and the application of chemical inputs. This has come at a cost in terms of biodiversity loss and land degradation. This apparent trade-off between productivity and environment can be resolved through adoption of new farming practices that emphasize restoring and maintaining biodiversity on agricultural land to the benefit of soils and crops. The science underpinning such practices is still being developed and trialed, but we know enough to propose alternative management principles. Similarly, farmers have long been experimenting and adapting their farming systems, sometimes drawing on scientific outputs, but more often than not drawing on their own experiential learning and knowledge exchange across farmer networks. In recognition of the developing science coupled with the growing interest of farmers in exploring new approaches to enhance farm resilience, ETH Zurich and IFPRI are pleased to share their research findings undertaken as part of the Enhancing Biodiversity and Resilience in Crop Production project, supported by Bayer. Over the course 2021-2022, ETH Zurich and IFPRI, together with partners in Germany, France, Brazil, and the USA, conducted systematic reviews of the scientific literature, complemented with interviews with farmers in each country, to evaluate management options for enhancing biodiversity and resilience in crop production. A panel composed of farmers, researchers, government and private sector actors will then comment on these research findings through the lens of farm management realities, and offer their perspectives on how to advance this area of research and how to achieve greater coherence of multiple policies, programs, and efforts. PODCAST EPISODE 56: Simon Mulvany, Founder of Save the Bees, Blairgowrie, Australia As many of you know, Founder and CEO of Save the Bees Simon Mulvany and I go way back. Save the Bees is an outstanding Australian organisation that aims to galvanise a community of like-minded people who would put their energy into saving bees from unethical and damaging processes. This has included (but is not limited to) incredible feats of activism (most famously against honey giant, Capilano) and the development of a wildly unique and useful online “honey map”, where local honey producers and stockists are pinpointed so consumers can bypass mainstream, unethical companies and their bee-related products. I am blown away by the work achieved by Save the Bees, and it is therefore a great pleasure to welcome one of my absolute favourite people to the BEES WITH BEN beekeeping podcast — the passionate, gutsy and determined beekeeper, Simon Mulvany. If I were to describe Simon to you, it might go something like this. He thinks outside the square. He seeks information from a wide range of sources. He is a philosopher, a father, an activist. He has the wellbeing of bees always in mind and is critical in his analysis of beekeeping practices. With a huge heart and a straight-down-the-line approach to helping the world's bees, Simon has proved that fighting for what matters and what is right, no matter the cost, is key. Simon's understanding that bees are central to so many important contemporary issues: organic farming, nutrition, pollution, the environment, education, wisdom, permaculture, and love. Through a strong media presence and unabashed approach, Simon is united people to fight the plight of the bee, one corporation or capitalist ideal at a time. However, Simon's personal life has also been complex, and this makes him even more compassionate. There have been some tough times in Simon's past, and he has dealt with these lows with his usual courage and integrity. Looking back, Simon recalls struggling with the regimentation of educational systems and workplaces (something I understand myself); regardless, he did quite well in his assignments and exams, but then rebelled, broke free from the system, and spent the next ten years travelling: “During that period I spent a lot of time surfing, diving and spear fishing. I worked on vineyards and as a pearl diver and dive assistant”. Eventually he made the choice to settle in Blairgowrie, Victoria, work as a park ranger and start a family—in turn, his wonderful son, Oscar, was born. However, very tragically, Oscar and Simon lost Oscar's mum, Georgie, soon after. I can only imagine how completely devastating this must have been, and my heart goes out to Simon every time I think about this chapter of his life. Simon once said to me, “Bees are medicine for humanity, not only through what they produce but how they live in harmony”. Surely there isn't a better way to sum up just how passionate this beekeeper is about connecting, educating and building a community of people who care for bees, the environment and each other. Tune in to hear Simon and I— a little hungover albeit after a beautiful World Bee Day educational event held at the lovely Sparkke brewery in Adelaide — go deep into his personal and professional journey to beekeeping. https://www.beethecure.com.au
A chilling police thriller set in a small coastal town on the Mornington Peninsula, where the discovery of human bones on an isolated beach has reawakened a twenty-year-old cold case… 'Australian crime fiction has just found an exciting new voice.' Marie Claire On the evening of September 22, 1998, three teenage girls venture out for a night of mischief in the coastal town of Blairgowrie. But only two return . . .
In this season, we take a look at the stories making the headlines and ask, “Is this case for real? How did the employer get away with that? And what is the law behind the headlines?” In this episode, Simon and Jack discuss the Daily Mail headline, “Officer sacked for calling black colleague ‘King of the Jungle’ wins £16,000 payout as Judge rules his remark wasn’t racist.” They discuss the reasons why the Employment Judge found that there had been an unfair dismissal. And they also get a bit excitable with their cockney (Blairgowrie) rhyming slang…

I was deeply honoured that this wonderful elderly gentleman who was almost 80, years old had sufficient confidence in me and this gaudily painted very second hand lorry to wish to come on the round trip of between six and seven hundred miles into some seriously wild countryside. I think it was the thought of passing Culloden and Balmoral, Tomintoul and Blairgowrie; Edinburgh, Perth and Dundee that had excited his serious interest.

There's also some decent footballing promise shown by Floss the dog, advice from Anna on Jim's impending parenthood, and a general blether about life and farming. This is part 2 of Jim's chat with Anna, so go back to find the first half in your podcast feed if you haven't heard it already. There are few stories in the world of golf better than that of Euan McIntosh. An Edinburgh man with 2 golfing careers. In his first career he played international golf for Scotland before turning pro where he played on the European Challenge Tour as well as the Tartan Tour in Scotland. Never quite making the breakthrough to the big time, Euan gave the game up completely for around 12 years to focus on a business career. At the age of 47 Euan became a reinstated amateur and rededicated himself to the game. Over the next couple of years he was recapped for Scotland and won The Scottish Amateur Championship at Blairgowrie at the fair old age of 49. In January this year he won one of only 5 tour cards for the European Seniors Tour (Staysure Tour) where he will this year compete against the very best senior golfers in Europe. A great story and watch this space... With Donald & Stewart Shotscope Technologys Golphin For Kids

After a busy period of activity; there are updates to deliver and comments to be made. The e-petition from Carolyn Leckie has clearly influenced a decision not to demolish the Red Road Flats as a part of the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony. There was a public meeting in Blairgowrie to discuss how to proceed with the Co-operative group and their sale of Rosemount Farm. After a brief visit to Easdale on the Blossom Tour, the whole topic of ‘energy’ came up. Lesley wrote about the subject in response to Brian Wilson amongst others. If you want to understand the role of renewable energy in the constitutional debate, Lesley does a master class here in this week’s pod. And after interventions from former military figures, the International Development secretary and Polly Toynbee; we try and pick facts from the fear. And as the SNP wheel out new female cabinet members, Lesley has a few thoughts on the historic role of women in this debate.
Lesley is travelling this week in the Aland Islands and reports back on the big international debate which is facing Finland. A hint; it’s about NATO and Putin. Back home Lesley has blogged and written about the Co-op but now there is a campaign involving the potential community purchase of Rosemount Farm near Blairgowrie ( @rosemountcoop ) which she explains in some detail. And over the last weekend, there have been calls for the big hitters, the big beasts of the Labour Party to get stuck into the constitutional debate. Tavish Scott was the voice of the concern and Lesley reacted in print. Here she explains why “the day of the wee, once timorous beasties has finally arrived.” And, Lesley had a few words for the R&A in the Sunday Post. Finally, apologies for the sound quality, but it was a long VOIP call. Lesley will be back home next week.
