How do we create true fulfilment in both our personal and professional lives? Many of us unfortunately sacrifice our personal health for the health and success of our business and/or career. However, what we've found is that the most successful businesses (and lives) are those that foster a “win-win” mentality. A “win-win” mentality serves your ideal consumer while also feeding and nurturing your own creative spirit. In this paradigm, one does not sacrifice their health in pursuit of success or take advantage of others to create wealth. In today's episode, we dive deeper into this topic with a very special guest who shared her profound insights on finding meaning in work and the importance of embracing a spiritual path both inside and outside of one's professional life.Erica Williams is the CEO of Yumy Candy, one of the fastest growing award-winning healthy candy companies in Canada and the USA. Racism has re-created the world in Black and white, with Black inscribed as perpetually dangerous and white as the goal of progress and civilization. Colorism is how this plays out within categories of race and ethnic communities, darker skin associated with the qualities ascribed to Blackness and people with lighter skin seen as more credible, more welcoming. Erica Williams and Amber Stark join us to talk about colorism. It's not just Black and white.
Racism re-created the world as Black and White, with Black at the bottom of the social hierarchy and white at the top. Others were added to the spaces between with darker skin associated with Blackness, even within communities seen as white. This conversation with Erica Williams and Amber Starks unpacks the ways in which we have internalized colonial ideas about race and color as well as how these beliefs play out in our broader society, who is acceptable and who is dangerous. Colorism. It's not just Black and White.

Those of us fortunate enough to have survived the Trump era, police violence against Black and Brown communities, a global pandemic and a punishing economic fallout, bear responsibility for what comes next. Organized resistance by impacted communities has forced the beginnings of a power shift but that alone will not ensure a more equitable future. Transformation requires going to the bones of truth. White people in powerful positions have enacted public policies in race and racism for centuries. The only way to counter this injustice is to explicitly advance policies founded in racial equity. And not just any policies. The heart of structural change is embedded in tax and fiscal policies. Erica Williams, the new executive director of the DC Fiscal Policy Institute is exactly the right person to meet the challenges and opportunities of this moment. She has lived the consequences of unjust policies and led a state-based network of fiscal policy advocates at the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities. Erica and her team are incubating new ideas, imagining what could be, including DC statehood, and inviting policy makers, community members and organizational partners to join them in making change happen.

LISTEN to the FULL episodes 6&7 w/ daughter of Dr. Eric Williams, Erica Williams-Connell BELOW! Excerpt from my conversation with Erica Williams-Connell:“I'm the one who was pushing him [to resign]…I felt that there were a lot of ingrates. I felt that he was tired. I felt that he could have time for himself, to write his books. I just wanted him out. …You have to remember that the Regiment wanted to string my father up in Woodford Square. They wanted to hang him in Woodford Square in 1970. There's no daughter who would want her father to be … in the same position, to have the same thing happen again.I'm the one who was 19 years old, slept with a .38 calibre Special under my pillow in his bedroom, with my glasses on for the first two nights when I arrived. Because if somebody burst into the room I had to see to be able to shoot them.”
Erica Williams-Connell has embarked on a mission -- to keep alive and extend the legacy of her father, the world-famous historian of Slavery, Imperialism, and the Caribbean, and the first Prime Minister of independent Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Eric Williams. The Eric Williams Memorial Collection, which she heads, is included in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register. But as with any great political figure, Dr. Eric Williams and his legacy is not without controversy by any means. Was his party's continuous 30-year reign in power dictatorial in any way? What was his record of race, religious and ethnic relations, between the Africans, Indians, Whites, Chinese and others? And he faced serious rebellions from the radical trade unionists, Black Power activists, and others right from 1960s up to his passing.Erica Williams-Connell tells the fascinating story of growing up as a young child during these tumultuous years, after the death of her mother, leaving her father to care for her alone. Her experience of the Army Mutiny, the Black Power Revolution, and Independence -- where her father was sometimes hero and sometime "villain" -- are explored among other things. If you missed last week's episode, please make sure that you listen to it first. There are some real gems there. This is an exciting, lively discussion that you don't want to miss.We re-join the second half of the conversation, in progress
