Katie is one of the very few author-illustrators to have sold over 100,000 copies of a book featuring cartoon slugs (Fun Factory series, Boosey & Hawkes). She has also worked as a freelance puzzle designer for the RSPCA, performed in theatres all over the UK in an unflattering pastel catsuit, co-founded a social enterprise and home educated two sons. Until very recently, however, no matter what she did it was a struggle. In 2016 her life changed in a dramatic way. She now runs Little Challenges, a project inspired by all she had to learn to stop struggling and start enjoying life. Alongside work as a speaker, workshop facilitator and mentor, she is creating an online library of videos, podcasts and interviews, designed to help make the business of being human just a little bit easier.—Recorded live at the global event in Cardigan, west Wales in 2018.Watch Katie's full talk here: www.thedolectures.com/talks/katie-elliott-the-possibility-to-change-stubborn-behaviours

In addition to being part of the Kazzrie Jaxen Duo/Trio/Quartet, Don has session and performed with Sal, Mosca, Jimmy Halperin, Larry Bluth, Jon Easton, Peter Prisco, Ted Brown, Rick Moore, Chris Aiello, Will Jhun,  Charley Krachy, Skip Scott, Rich Peare, and others. I’ve known Jeremy Baguyos for over 15 years, and I’ve always found it fascinating how he weaves together the double bass and computer music in his work.  After playing bass full-time with the Orquesta Filarmonica de GC (Spain) and Shreveport Symphony, Jeremy moved to Washington, DC to freelance.  I met him in the early 2000s while playing in the Des Moines Metro Opera, where he serves as principal bass. After getting a Master’s Degree in Computer Music from Peabody, Jeremy’s career pivoted into academia.  He is Professor of Music & Interdisciplinary Informatics at the University of Nebraska Omaha, and I was actually a guest speaker for UNO’s music entrepreneurship program this fall. We talk about his first public music project in Chicago back in 2004, the unexpected twists and turns of his career, what his job at UNO is like, music entrepreneurship, and much more.  Enjoy! Nina Harries is a compelling force in the creative arts, exploring new territory with bass and vocals in an exciting manner.  She recently launched her debut album in an event along with harpist and vocalist Ellie Ford, and she has several extremely groovy solo pieces like Icarus and The Clown Song up on YouTube. We talk about the experience of feeling like a “duck out of water” her first two years at the Royal College of Music, finding her groove by combining the voice with bass, exploring a variety of bands and creative projects in London, and the circumstances that led her to join the Akram Khan Company two years ago.  Enjoy!   Listen to Contrabass Conversations with our free app for iOS, Android, and Kindle! Jonathan Newman is a well-known composer and is the Director of Composition & Coordinator of New Music at the Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, Virginia. Topics: Jonathan’s background, how playing the trombone has helped his career, and important teachers in his life. How writing in a variety of genres helps him stay focused and the importance of exploring a plurality of styles as a composer. BCM International and how four friends found a way to have a booth at Midwest and launch their careers. Being a pioneer as a self-published composer in the early 2000’s and how a job at Boosey & Hawkes helped him learn how to publish his own music. Jonathan’s newest work Pi‘ilani and Ko‘olauan. Links: Jonathan Newman, Composer BCM International Newman: OK, Feel Good Newman: Blow it Up, Start Again Newman: Pi’ilani and Ko’alauan Britten: War Requiem Bach: Komm, süsser Tod Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier (Final Trio) Biography: Jonathan Newman composes music rich with rhythmic drive and intricate sophistication, creating broadly colored musical works that incorporate styles of pop, blues, jazz, folk, and funk into otherwise classical models. Trained as a pianist, trombonist, and singer, his work is informed by an upbringing performing in orchestras, singing in jazz choirs, playing in marching bands, and accompanying himself in talent shows. From opera to bubblegum pop, Newman delivers a new perspective on American concert music. Recent work includes Mass, a large-scale project with texts by poet Victoria Chang which premiered in 2018 with The Choir of Trinity Wall Street as part of their Mass Reimaginings commissioning program. In 2016 he was appointed Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras Composer-in-Residence; work with CYSO included performances of Metropolitan, Tree, and 3 O’Clock Mix, Chicago’s 2016 Ear Taxi Festival, and the commissions for Meridian and Blow It Up, Start Again—which have subsequently been performed by orchestras worldwide, including the Minnesota Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony, the 2015 Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the 2015 BBC Proms. Other recent commissions include Prayers of Steel for Chicago’s Gaudete Brass (recorded on Cedille Records, 2017) and These Inflected Tentacles for chamber quartet. Newman’s ensemble transcriptions include arrangements of Beck, George Harrison, Puccini, Sufjan Stevens, Eric Whitacre, Led Zeppelin, and electronica premiered at the 2005 Lincoln Center Festival and recorded on Acoustica: Alarm Will Sound Performs Aphex Twin (Cantaloupe Records). As a MacDowell Fellow, he began work on an opera based on the 1962 cult horror film Carnival of Souls, in collaboration with playwright Gary Winter. He is currently working with Winter on an imaginary ballet suite for the Florida State University Wind Orchestra based on the Hawaiian story of Pi’ilani and Ko’olau. Wind and educational ensembles around the world frequently perform from his large catalog of works, including Blow It Up, Start Again (transcription for winds), Symphony No. 1, My Hands Are a City—a wind ensemble consortium commission based on themes of mid-century American Beat Culture, Sowing Useful Truths, commissioned by the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and Moon by Night, 2003 winner of the NBA/Merrill Jones Composition Award. Born in 1972, Newman received the Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and holds degrees from Boston University’s School for the Arts, where he studied composition with Richard Cornell and Charles Fussell and conducting with Lukas Foss, and The Juilliard School, where he studied with composers John Corigliano and David Del Tredici and conducting with Miguel Harth-Bedoya. At Juilliard, his collaborative works for dance enjoyed multiple performances at The Juilliard Theater, Alice Tully Hall, P.S. 122, and Dance Theater Workshop. His early training includes Boston University Tanglewood Institute and the Aspen Music Festival where he studied with composers George Tsontakis and Bernard Rands. His works have been recorded on Avian, BCM, Brain Music, Cantaloupe, Cedille, Klavier, Mark Custom, Naxos, Potenza, and Summit Records. Newman is a founding member of the composer-consortium BCM International: four stylistically-diverse composers dedicated to enriching the repertoire with exciting works for mediums often mired in static formulas. BCM recorded two albums: BCM Saves the World (Mark Custom Records, 2002) and BCM Men of Industry (BCM Records, 2004). He resides in Virginia, where he serves as Director of Composition & Coordinator of New Music at Shenandoah Conservatory.

Thousands of people have played her music and discovered the joy and beauty of playing music that is both educational (helping instrumentalists learn basic musical skills) and also musical, engaging their imagination and encouraging them to stay in the instrumental music program. In addition to concert band, she has written for solo flute with band, solo clarinet with band, brass band, string orchestra, solo flute, flute with piano accompaniment, and music for flute duet, trio, quartet and choir. All of her compositions and arrangements have been published. Her publishers include Queenwood Publications (now Queenwood/Kjos), C. L. Barnhouse Co., Boosey & Hawkes, Hal Leonard Corporation, Kendor Music, Kjos Publications and Southern Music Company. After a successful career spanning 30+ years as both a composer and publisher of educational music, Anne is now writing chamber music for brass and woodwinds, all published by McGinty Music. An expert in writing for wind instruments, Anne is also composing for diverse instrumental combinations to showcase their varied timbral possibilities in modern, tonal music. She began her higher education at The Ohio State University, where Donald McGinnis was her mentor, band director and flute teacher. She left OSU to pursue a career in flute performance, and played principal flute with the Tucson (Arizona) Symphony Orchestra, Tucson Pops Orchestra, and in the TSO Woodwind Quintet, which toured Arizona under the auspices of a government grant. When she returned to college, she received her Bachelor of Music, summa cum laude, and Master of Music from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she concentrated on flute performance, music theory and composition. She studied flute and chamber music with Bernard Goldberg and composition with Joseph Willcox Jenkins. Ms McGinty is a life member of the National Flute Association and served on its Board of Directors. She taught flute at several colleges in the Mid-West, taught flute and chamber music to underprivileged children, and was leader of a Royal American Regiment Fife and Drum Corps. She performed professionally in orchestras, chamber groups and as a flute clinician for a major manufacturer. She also was the editor of a flute column for a music magazine and co-founder of the NFA Newsletter, now known as “The Flutists Quarterly.” Although no longer performing as a flutist, she remains well known as a flute choir specialist and was the first person to convince two major educational music publishers to publish a series for flute choir. As the flute editor at Hansen Publications in Miami Beach, Florida, she arranged and produced the first such flute choir series. She is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and has received annual composition award since 1986. She received the Golden Rose Award from the Women Band Directors National Association and the Outstanding Service to Music Award from Tau Beta Sigma, a national honorary band sorority.
