POPULARITY
In this extra long interview I had the privilege of talking to the illustrious leader of Finji - makers of Canabalt, Overland, Tunic and many more fun games. We delve into the details and get a good understanding of why Finji - being an artist centric developer - has managed to also build and grow as a business successfully over the years. Finji makes some truly magical games - which you can find here: https://finji.co/ Rebekah can be found here: https://twitter.com/BexSaltsman
This week we're talking to the co-founders of the game studio Finji, Rebekah & Adam Saltsman! Finji both develops their own games and publishes other games from indie creators. Even if you haven't heard the name "Finji", you've definitely heard of the games they've put out: Night in the Woods, Tunic, Chicory, and Canabalt to name a few! Naturally there's a lot to discuss on how Adam & Rebekah supplement each other's skillsets, balancing both development and publishing, and what makes Finji's library so unique and cohesive. Music from Ben Kyo too! LINKS:
Mike, Vince, and Alex have a special guest this episode! Brian Schmidt comes on the show along with his vast experience working on game, starting from pinball and arcade games in the mid-80s, through console hardware audio in the 2000s, and to the present day and his current station as founder and executive director of GameSoundCon. Along the way, the crew hits some great high points in game audio history and geeks out: entirely too much. Notable mentions include: Black Knight 2000 (pinball game, Williams) Tattoo Assassins (arcade fighting game, Data East) XACT (audio toolset and programming library, Microsoft) Defender (arcade shooting game, Williams) Destiny 2 (first-person shooter, Bungie) Deathloop (first-person shooter, Arkane Lyon) Ni no Kuni (role playing game, Level-5) Roel Funcken - https://roelfuncken.bandcamp.com/ (musician) Canabalt (web and mobile game, Adam Saltsman and Danny Baranowsky) GameSoundCon, October 25-26 in Los Angeles, CA (www.gamesoundcon.com) Featuring: Alex May, Michael Shapiro, Vincent Diamante, and special guest Brian Schmidt Recorded September 23, 2022
We continue our recurring segment of breaking down the games that we feel define a genre. This time, we discuss a pretty chunky genre - platformers.Games we talk about: Prince of Persia (1989) Banjo-Kazooie (1998) Cave Story (2004) Canabalt (2009) Super Meat Boy (2010)
Kert Gartner loves making VR game trailers, and he's constantly breaking new ground in virtual cinematography and mixed reality. He's been making indie game trailers for about 10 years, and with his years of experience in the feature film VFX industry, he's most comfortable making trailers in After Effects. We discuss how the heck that works, why he wouldn't have it any other way, how he got into making game trailers, and what interests him most about the work. Trailers Discussed: Gato Roboto, Canabalt, Nidhogg, Serious Sam: Random Encounter, Hotline Miami, IceBurgers, Space Channel 5 VR, Museum of Other Realities, Genital Jousting, Minit, Dungeon Hearts, Vacation Simulator, Eighth Grade, Whiplash, Neverending Nightmares, Snow Runner, Fantastic Contraption. This week, Chris O'Regan chats to Space Mace about their autorunner/puzzle platformer for 1-4 players, Joggernauts. Runners have become the mainstay of many a mobile and console game. Titles like Canabalt, Bit Trip Runner and Alto's Adventure have all gathered a significant following. The major negative against them is the lack of multiplayer component. Space Mace, the creators of Joggernauts spotted this and decided to fill that gap by creating a 4 player co-op runner game that has players navigating a tricky maze of platforms as they run from left to right. Show host Chris O'Regan first saw Joggernauts at PAX West 2018 and just had to have Space Mace on as guests of The Sausage Factory to chat about it. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/sausage/TSF_Episode206.mp3 The Sausage Factory 206 was edited by Chris O'Regan

We talk about Adam’s new venture Finji Games, and collaborating with fans, from early access to Earliest Access. In this episode we concentrate solely on soundtrack songs from the Commodore 64, one of the main home computers of the 80's and early 90's. We hear a lot of tracks from Western composers who were largely influenced by the electronic music popular in Europe at the time. If you aren't familiar with the C64 and its SID sound chip, definitely give this a listen -- lots of good music came out of this era!I should have given a shout-out to Stone Oakvalley's Authentic SID Collection, where you can get most of the tracks we played this episode as MP3s.Oh, and sorry this episode is a week late. We try to stick to every other Wednesday, but sometimes life gets in the way!Download MP3 Tracklist (full info here):
