John recently published A California Love Story: A collection of letters written between 1925 and 1927. The book colorfully illustrates the heavenly courtship of John's grandparents Ray and Dora Wilcox after Ray was forced westward to find work. When John Thill traveled to Kansas and Oklahoma to research the couple's origins, he found their cross-country postcards and extensive letters collaborating on their future together in California the most charming and entertaining example of how they revived each other through their mutual promises. Their letters offer a poignant testament to long-distance love and a heartfelt glimpse into the lives of these two unique individuals. Along Ray's journey, he met and became friends with the Kelly Family, who donated the land to the Agua Hediona Lagoon Foundation. Show Notes: Tom Hughes initially planned to pursue an MD, PhD, and work on multiple sclerosis, but decided against it due to his poor chemistry skills. Instead, he focused on being an English professor, inspired by his father, who had been an English professor. During his senior year, his brother joined him and encouraged him to pursue his passion for acting. Tom auditioned for two of his favorite plays, The Lion in Winter and The Foreigner, and was cast in both of them. This was a rare moment in life where everything fell in his direction, and he was cast in all of the shows he auditioned for. He then decided to focus on his English major and thesis work. Tom recounts his journey from being a singer in The Pudding to auditioning for a production of Dangerous Liaisons. He was inspired by his love for theater and the Utah Shakespeare Festival, which he had attended every year with his family. After graduation, he moved to New York and started working off Broadway. He auditioned for Harvard's ART Institute and moved back to Cambridge. In between these years, he met a woman, got engaged and married. They moved back to New York, and Tom continued auditioning and getting small film gigs. He went back to Columbia for a master's degree in organizational organizational psychology, which eventually led to a position at Booz Allen consulting firm. Tom moved on and worked for Duke corporate education for seven years before moving to the Carlsbad California office. They stayed there for another three years before being laid off during a downsizing. This led to establishing his own business, he partnered with another friend and colleague to form a small consulting firm, and this is their 11th year working for themselves. A Conversation about a Theatrical Background Tom discusses his avocation in the theater, mentioning his father's audiobook recording as a fun outlet. He directed one show and a radio show version of It's a Wonderful Life, but he found this was not for him and decided to stay with acting. Tom's wife is actively involved with the theater, and Tom talks about how she worked on a show during COVID-19 restrictions; this led to a part for Tom which led to directing a radio show. Tom finds the theater experience enjoyable and has worked with amazing people and talented people in the community. He believes that the experience should be about the show rather than the social aspect. Community Theater vs. Professional Theater Tom talks about the difference between community theater and professional theater which are two distinct aspects of the arts. Community theater is about the community, where friends perform for the benefit of the community, rather than aiming to become Hollywood stars. Professional theaters are more prepared, have worked before, and have more rehearsal time. They come with a different tool set, such as singers, actors, and professionals who know their craft. In community theaters, people often don't even write down their blocking notes, which can be frustrating for those who don't have the time to practice. Professional theaters have a dedicated team, preparing and working on their craft, and have more time for rehearsal. They also have a better tool set, such as experts in their craft. Mental Models and Acting Tom discusses his mental models and how his way of thinking changed from a junior in college to pursuing theater professionally. He shares two key lessons: the importance of listening and being present for others, which is crucial for success in the industry. He shares a conversation with a colleague about a famous breakup in Hollywood and how it can be difficult to stay faithful without falling in love when playing an intensely romantic role with an attractive actor. He also shares a lesson from a classmate, Glenn Kessler, who taught him that no way of working is always right. There is no style, approach, or version of oneself that will be right everywhere. Being a professional means doing what the job calls for, and it is freeing to feel like an asset and get rewarded for it. Acting Coach and Consultant Tom talks about his work as an acting coach and developing listening skills. In group settings, such as meetings, online learning, and virtual meetings, listening is crucial for effective communication. However, many people are not paying attention to others, leading to unsatisfying experiences and hindering learning. In coaching, listening and reflecting are essential for helping individuals think through their thoughts. Practicing listening and turning off the "I'm planning my response mechanism" can help create a more authentic and engaging interaction with the audience. By practicing and hearing people, one can create a more authentic and memorable experience for both the actor and the audience. Tom started his consulting practice with a partner, Jared Blake, a Harvard EDD. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he and Blake started working independently, but later reconnected and decided to work together. They formed an entity and started marketing together, serving well-known brands like Nike. They both teach for various schools, including corporate education and the Texas A&M Executive Education program. They also provide individual coaching and advisory work on leadership development and coaching for clients. Influential Courses and Professors at Harvard Tom shares his experiences with courses and professors that have shaped his life. He mentions his experience in an organic chemistry course, where he was told that it probably wasn't for him. He also took a class from Joe Harris on Norse mythology. He was also accepted into a graduate seminar with Barbara Lewalski, who was a brilliant and challenging professor. Tom also talks about his experience working in law as an undergraduate, and why he decided this path was not for him after working on a murder case. Remembering Rolly Crump In today's My Disney Class Podcast episode, Ryan and Howie reflect and remember the contributions of the legendary Rolly Crump. At the age of 93, Roland “Rolly” Crump passed away peacefully in his home in Carlsbad CA on March 12, 2023. Most of us Disney fans know Rolly through his contributions to famous classic Disney attractions like Small World, The Haunted Mansion, and The Enchanted Tiki Room but Rolly's unique and whimsical style and art can be seen in a variety of ways all around the world. He truly had an interesting perspective on the world and through his direct style of communication, he had no qualms about sharing his views and vision. This characteristic made Rolly one of Walt's favorite people and a trusted ally. On today's show, Ryan and Howie share a little bit about what they know about Rolly's journey and the stories that he told about Walt, and the different attractions he worked on. Howie and Ryan share their love for his uniqueness and his love of having fun and pulling pranks. It certainly is fitting that My Disney Class Podcast is honoring Rolly on its April 1st show! We hope you enjoyed our brief look at celebrating the life of the Disney legend Rolly Crump. We also hope you are inspired to search out those unique and different students in your classrooms and buildings and help support them in sharing their unique perspectives with the world. In Wall Subwoofers We recently received an email from Jim in Carlsbad CA asking why there weren't many reviews of in wall subwoofers. This got us thinking about it. It seems reasonable because how many reviewers are going to commit to ripping a hole in their drywall to test out something that they are going to have to give back when they are done? So how do you make an educated decision? This is one of the situations that you may have to rely on other members of the audio community who are not professional reviewers. Whether it be AVS Forum, Amazon customer reviews, or one of dozens of consumer sites people love to share their experience. The trick is how to separate truth from BS. A general rule of thumb we use when looking at consumer reviews is that 10% of the reviewers hate everything and 10% are too easy on any given product. So they typically cancel out. If you get 80% good ratings then you are looking at something that is a good product. We use this rule for anything we buy online. By the way, most in wall subwoofers are passive so your receiver will need an amplifier available to drive it. If you don't have an available amp you will need to factor one into the cost. Before we look at some in wall options let's look at some of the pros and cons of going this route. Most of these are the same for in wall speakers as well. Pros: Space - Since these are mounted in wall they do not take up space and thus are easier to fit in with any decor. They typically have high spouse acceptance factor as well. Increased Gain - Mounting in the wall will use the space between the studs as an enclosure to extend the bass. Cons: Installation - If you are not handy cutting into drywall you will need to hire someone to install the subwoofer increasing the overall cost. Amplification - In wall subwoofers will require an external amplifier. Since most receiver do not amplify the subwoofer output you'll need to buy a separate one increasing the overall cost. Fewer Upgrade options - once you get your subwoofer installed you are pretty much committed. Unless you can find another model that is the same dimensions. It's not like you swap out subwoofers all the time but you may upgrade in a few years. In wall makes that upgrade more difficult. Calibration - You have heard of the subwoofer crawl right? You won't easily be able to find the right spot for your subwoofer. Since the cavity of the wall is used to extend the bass no SPL measurements will be the same as those taken when the subwoofer is in it's final location. If the position is more important you will have to take other measure to get the audio just right. Here are three in-wall subwoofers that have received an 80% or greater favorable rating by consumers: In the low price category we have the Aria In Wall Subwoofer 10 Inch Passive 200W max $30 (Monoprice). Monoprice does not even try to pretend this is a subwoofer replacement but more of a “bridge” to help offset the frequency gap of compact speakers. But at $30 it may be perfect for casual listening. The subwoofer gets 4.5 out of 5 stars from 39 reviewers. The biggest complaint is that it's installation instructions are not clear. Specifications Impedance - 8 ohms Frequency Response - 35 Hz to 3.0 kHz Power Handling Capacity - 100 watts nominal / 200 watts max Woofer - 10" Non-press Cone Woofer Sensitivity - 88dB ±2dB (1.0m/2.0V) Cut-out Dimensions - 10.6 x 10.6" Overall Dimensions - 11.9" x 11.9" Mounting Depth - 3.6” Our mid price subwoofer is the Klipsch Architectural RW-5802 300 W RMS Woofer $499. This one rated 5 stars but from only 4 users. The RW-5802 sits in an enclosed cabinet that should make it easier to install and reduce vibration and sound in adjacent rooms. Specifications Dual 8 (30.5cm) front-firing, cerametallic cone, cast aluminum frame driver woofer Sealed integrated enclosure for maximum installation flexibility 45-140Hz Frequency Response 90dB Sensitivity at 1-Watt 1m Dimensions - Height 20.8 x Width 11.8 x Depth 3.7 Our high end in wall subwoofer is the Definitive Technology In-Wall Sub 10/10 $800. This is also an enclosed cabinet which makes installation easier. It scores a perfect 5 stars from all three reviewers! Specifications Outer Dimensions: 15-1/2" W x 21" H Cut-out Size: 14-3/8" W x 3-13/16" D x 19-7/8" H Frequency Response: 16 Hz – 200 Hz Nominal Impedance: 4 ohms Driver Complement: One 10" Long-Excursion Woofer coupled to a 10" Infrasonic Radiator Enclosure: Non-resonant Sealed Medite Weight: 30 lbs. In doing research we also discovered the Theater Solutions SUB8S 250 Watt Surround Sound HD Home Theater Slim Powered Active Subwoofer $98. It's not an in wall subwoofer but it is pretty cool nonetheless. It only measures 4 and ¾ inches high so it can be placed under a lot of furniture. It also comes with a wall mount that allows for it to easily be attached to a wall. Just be sure to buy 90 degree adapters for your RCA cables. So it's kind of the best of both worlds. It's not huge so think small family room. It's rated 4 stars by 112 users so it seems like a good bet. Especially for something that costs less than $100. Specifications 8" high efficiency low frequency front firing subwoofer 100 Watts RMS and 250 Watts Max in cabinet amplifier with a frequency response of 35 Hz - 150 Hz High Level L/R Input and Output spring terminals and L/R RCA Inputs Built-in Auto Shut Off RCA Cable, "Y" RCA Adapter and full instructions included
