A century ago, iodine deficiency affected kids across large swaths of the United States. It essentially disappeared after some food makers started adding it to table salt, bread and some other foods, in one of the great public health success stories of the 20th century. But today, people are getting less iodine because of changes in diet and food manufacturing. Although most people are still getting enough, researchers have increasingly been reporting low levels of iodine in pregnant women and other people, raising concerns about an impact on their newborns. And there is also a very small, but growing, number of reports of iodine deficiency in kids. One sign of insufficient iodine is a swelling of the neck, known as a goiter. The thyroid gland in the neck uses iodine to produce hormones that regulate the heart rate and other body functions. When there's not enough iodine, the thyroid gland enlarges as it goes into overdrive to make up for the lack of iodine. Public health experts realized they couldn't solve the problem by feeding everyone seaweed and seafood, but they learned that iodine can essentially be sprayed on table salt. Iodized salt first became available in 1924. By the 1950s, more than 70% of U.S. households used iodized table salt. Bread and some other foods also were fortified with iodine, and iodine deficiency became rare. But diets changed. Processed foods now make up a large part of the American diet, and though they contain a lot of salt, it's not iodized. Leading bread brands no longer add iodine. And for people who do salt their food, the fashion now is to use kosher salt, Himalayan rock salt or other non-iodized products. “People have forgotten why there's iodine in salt,” said Dr. Elizabeth Pearce of Boston Medical Center. She noted a reported 50% drop in U.S. iodine levels in surveyed Americans between the 1970s and the 1990s. Some studies have linked even mild iodine deficiency to lower IQs and language delay in children, although there is debate about at exactly what levels problems start, Pearce said. This article was provided by The Associated Press.
A century ago, goiters resulting from iodine deficiency were rampant in people living in inland states from Appalachia and the Great Lakes to the northwest United States---an area that came to be known as the "goiter belt." Iodized salt solved that problem. But now iodine deficiency and goiters are making a comeback in the U.S. Listen in this week as Dee discusses why this is happening and how to ensure you get enough iodine in your diet without iodized salt.Reference:Hatch-McChesney, A., & Lieberman, H. Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 11-21-2-24: Dr. Dawn introduces the groundbreaking Cellular Atlas project published in Nature journal, explaining how new technology allows unprecedented analysis of cellular interactions and developmental patterns. She explores the concept of holobionts - viewing symbiotic organisms as composite life forms with their microbiomes as co-equal contributors - challenging traditional views of individual organisms. The show delves into examples of holobiont relationships in nature, from bark beetles carrying fungal spores to the complex bacterial communities in human bodies and plant root systems. Dr. Dawn discusses how the holobiont perspective is revolutionizing our understanding of diseases, from cancer microbiomes to colony collapse disorder in bees. She examines practical applications of holobiont research in agriculture, including drought-resistant crops and methods to reduce methane emissions from cattle. The show explores the gut-brain axis and how microbiome interactions influence various diseases including depression, anxiety, and metabolic disorders. She then discusses research identifying that various cancers co-exist in the body with distinct fungal and bacterial microbiomes of their own Dr. Dawn concludes with a discussion of declining iodine levels in the American population, examining dietary changes and potential health implications.

Did you know there's a critical nutrient we are often deficient in, don't get enough of in our American diet, and that plays a pivotal role in everything from hair health to preventing cancer and disease? Any guesses? It's IODINE. Maybe you've heard of how important this supplement is for those with breast cancer, or perhaps you've heard about how it can help boost the immune system and its powerful effects on our health. It's a supplement that's not emphasized or utilized enough! However, there's often confusion when it comes to properly using and supplementing with it. In this episode, we emphasize the importance of not self-prescribing iodine but instead seeking guidance from a knowledgeable healthcare professional, so adequate testing to hone in on the proper dose you need without overdoing it. Our special guest, Dr. Brownstein, author and conventional medical doctor turned holistic advocate, he transitioned out of mainstream medicine (after his conscience was literally keeping him up at night), and he's helping people with all sorts of health conditions- using the power of iodine. I'll admit, I vaguely knew only some of the potential health effects of iodine, but after this interview, you'll have a new found awareness of the importance of this powerful nutrient. Today, we're going to talk about the signs and symptoms of iodine deficiency. Many people have low iodine. You're likely iodine deficient unless you consume shellfish, seaweed, sea kelp, or vegetables grown on the coast. The level of iodine in your body really depends on the level of iodine in the food you eat and the soil it's grown in. If you're deficient in iodine, you could end up with a hypothyroid condition. The top symptoms of hypothyroidism include: • Swelling in the lower part of the neck • Difficulty losing weight • Dry hair and dry skin • Thinned hair • Constipation Overlooked signs of an iodine deficiency: 1. Estrogen dominance. Iodine helps regulate estrogen and helps prevent estrogen dominance. It also supports detoxification. 2. High cortisol levels. Iodine helps normalize cortisol levels. 3. A hypothyroid condition. Hypothyroidism can cause the cholesterol in your body to be elevated but unusable for making vitamin D, cell membranes, and bile. 4. Side effects when consuming soy products. Iodine helps buffer the estrogen effects of consuming soy products. 5. Hashimoto's. You still need iodine if you have Hashimoto's, but not excess iodine. You may also need selenium, zinc, vitamin D, and myo-inositol.
Iodine has become a bit of a controversial supplement of late, even in the natural medicine world. On this episode, Jared interviews Charles Hakala, RPh, a compounding pharmacist, about this incredible nutrient. You'll learn about iodine deficiency and how to optimize this nutrient that is critical for every cell in the body - in particular, the thyroid. This episode pairs beautifully with episode #347 on Thyroid Health with Dr. Todd Cameron. Jared suggests that you listen to both of these episodes to get a clearer picture of how to optimize thyroid health. You'll also learn the protocol used by some of the most renowned functional medicine doctors who specialize in thyroid health. This is a fascinating episode that sheds light on this somewhat contentious topic.Products:LugoTab Iodine TabletsSeleniumVitamin CMagnesiumNiacinamideRiboflavinIodine Test Kits Available at Vitality Nutrition 801-292-6662Protocol:12.5mg-50mg Lugol's Iodine (drops or tablets - work up to 50mg)200mcg Selenium400-600mg Magnesium1000-3000mg Vitamin C (split 2-3x/day)500mg No-Flush Niacin (Niacinamide)100mg RiboflavinAdditional Information:Episode#347: Thyroid Health: Why Your Doctor Might Be Looking at the Wrong Numbers With Dr. Todd CameronVisit the podcast website here: VitalityRadio.comYou can follow @vitalityradio and @vitalitynutritionbountiful on Instagram, or Vitality Radio and Vitality Nutrition on Facebook. As I've received more messages from people with kids born hairless or with goiters, I've become more interested in the topic of iodine and goats because those symptoms occur in kids that are iodine deficient. You don't usually hear anyone talking about iodine and goats unless the topic of kelp comes up, and then the conversation can swing wildly between people worried about deficiency or toxicity. In today's episode, I am joined again by Dr. Robert VanSaun, Professor of Veterinary Science and Extension Veterinarian in the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences at Pennsylvania State University. We talk about symptoms of iodine deficiency in adult goats, as well as newborn kids. We also take a deep dive into providing kelp for goats and how labels don't always give you the information you need.Full show notes here -- https://thriftyhomesteader.com/iodine-deficiency-in-goats/To see the most recent episodes, visit ForTheLoveOfGoats.com
On Wednesdays we eat Himalayan Pink Salt...or do we?Many wellness "experts" are quick to recommend you switch from using regular table salt to Himalayan pink salt. All throughout human history and up until approximately 100 years ago, iodine deficiency, goiters (enlarged thyroid glands), hypothyroidism, and death from thyroid failure was a common public health problem. Ask your great grandmother (if you could) about goiters and she would likely have been able to share many horror stories about people who were disfigured by goiters and who died of thyroid failure. This public health problem essentially disappeared when, in the U.S., the FDA asked salt manufacturers to add iodine to table salt. But then, years later, various government agencies advised Americans to cut back on salt--and guess what is now making a comeback? Yes: iodine deficiency, hypothyroidism from iodine deficiency, and even goiters. Don't let this happen to you. In this episode of Defiant Health Radio, I show you how to make certain that sufficient iodine is part of your life. Severe iodine deficiency disorders (IDDs) caused by lack of iodine during pregnancy and early life can result in irreversible brain damage but are avoidable. Professor Creswell Eastman at the University of Sydney in Australia and his colleagues Professors Mu Li and Gary Ma have contributed significantly to the prevention of IDDs arising from severe iodine deficiency in the developing world and is now concentrating on the effects of mild to moderate iodine deficiency globally.

The Paleo Diet is a popular diet that can work well for many chronic diseases, especially autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto’s disease. However, the Paleo Diet can be somewhat restrictive which can result in deficiencies if the dieter doesn’t carefully review their food and micronutrient intake. Iodine is one important micronutrient that may become depleted on a Paleo Diet. The Autoimmune Paleo Diet is an even more restrictive diet so the same deficiency may happen. Let’s review what the research shows about the Paleo Diet and iodine deficiency. A paper published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition entitled, “A Paleolithic-type diet results in iodine deficiency: a 2-year randomized trial in postmenopausal obese women” sheds some light on this question. Introduction to this study on the Paleo Diet and iodine deficiency This study was done in Sweden and the authors begin by stating >50% of iodine intake comes from iodized table salt followed by dairy and seafood. The Paleo Diet is void of dairy, grains, legumes, refined sugar, processed oils, and salt thus removing two important sources of iodine. 150 micrograms of iodine per day is recommended by the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNR) but the thyroid can function at 70 micrograms of iodine per day. Urinary iodine concentration (UIC) by spot urine is recommended for determining iodine status. Adequate iodine intake is a UIC of 100-199 ug/l. Mild iodine deficiency is a UIC of 50-99 ug/l. Moderate iodine deficiency is 20-49 ug/l. Severe iodine deficiency is

Global Iodine Deficiency day (21.10.2020)

Dr. Jennifer Burns visits Perfectly Healthy And Toned Radio to discuss the importance of Iodine. Dr. Jennifer Burns started her battle with Irritable Bowel Syndrome 20 years ago. She first noticed the symptoms would only arise when she was stressed then it got to the point she would have to look for a bathroom wherever she went. She got to the point where she would have colon spasms that lasted for 6 hours or more. Dr. Burns tried all kinds of prescriptions and tried doctor after doctor with no success. It was until she entered naturopathic school that she would find the answers she was looking for and ultimately get relief from IBS. Dr. Burns graduated from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and completed a residency at Las Fuentes Health Clinic. After her residency she worked at different clinics in Arizona as a holistic family practitioner. She uses as integrative approach to bring people to optimal health. Iodine deficiency has been linked to cysts in the breasts and ovaries and supplementation with Iodine has been shown to prevent, reduce and treat the disease. This is a highly researched topic with a large amount of supportive evidence. Anti-Aging and Regenerative Physicians consider Iodine to be the forgotten nutrient. Iodine is used mainly in the thyroid, but there are numerous other functions in the body as well. There is a huge Iodine deficiency in the United States and without it, the body suffers. Iodine is used mainly in the thyroid gland to produce Thyroid Hormone, or T4, which means there are four Iodine molecules attached to it. T4 is then secreted and once it reaches the target cells, it regulates metabolic activity inside the cells when it is converted to T3 by an enzyme. Iodine is important because it can prevent and even treat conditions of hypothyroidism (low thyroid function). Hypothyroidism has been linked to Fibromyalgia, Graves Disease, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. When the body is deficient in Iodine, the thyroid gland can become larger causing a goiter. There are certain areas of the country that are more deficient in Iodine than others. This is called the Goiter Belt. There is not enough Iodine in table salt to provide enough Iodine necessary for the body's needs. There are many supplements available such as Iodoral, which is highly recommended as a superior supplement. If you read these articles, you will find that Iodine is not the only nutrient involved with the Thyroid Hormone. In order for the transport form T4 to be made into the metabolically active T3, you need 5' Deiodinase, an enzyme, which requires the multivitamin Selenium. So, you may want to supplement with Selenium at the same time as Iodine. You can read the Blog article on Selenium to learn about its other benefits as well. Other nutrients that your thyroid needs for proper function is the amino acid Tyrosine, Magnesium and Zinc. There are also companies like NuMedica that produce Thyrodex T-150 and ThryoMedica Plus to help support the thyroid. If Iodine supplementation does not overcome hypothyroidism and it is necessary to take thyroid hormone, compounding pharmacies like Partell Specialty Compounding Pharmacy can make compounded thyroid hormone like Levothyroxine (T4 form), or Triiodothyronine or liothyronine(T3 form), or they can even combine the two forms in a capsule in accordance with the specific ratio that the patient needs. There are two excellent books by Dr. David Brownstein called, Iodine, Why You Need It and the other, Overcoming Thyroid Disorders if you are interested in obtaining more information. by Robert Seik, PharmD

The prevalence of endemic iodine-deficiency goitre in Europe has been reduced in many areas by the introduction of iodination programmes. Recent reports, however, show that goitre remains a significant problem and that its prevalence has not decreased in a number of European countries. Hetzel1 has pointed out that the high global prevalence of iodine-deficiency disorders could be eradicated within 5-10 years by introduction of an iodised salt programme. The current World Health Organisation recommendations for iodine intake are between 150 and 300 μg/day
