Freedom and Liberty Under Attack Steve Cassell pt 2We are going to be concluding this great interview with my good friend Pastor Steve Cassell of the Beloved Church in Lena, Illinois. This is part three of our interview and if you missed any, and I mean any of the preceding two episodes, well, you need to go back and catch up. Pastor Steve Cassell was the first pastor in America to file legal challenges against executive orders during the pandemic which shut down churches in America. He was the lone voice speaking out against the illegal executive orders mandating that everyone had to wear masks, stop attending church services and limiting the freedom of assembly and, basically, keeping people under house arrest and destroying small businesses in America. Do you see the church entering a period of revival because of all the chaos going on around us? It amazes me how clearly we can see events accelerating to what the Bible calls, “the last days and the soon return of Jesus,” but yet, it seems nobody wants to discuss that. It's almost as if they are afraid of, literally, “scaring the hell out of somebody.” But that is what is needed right now. We need to “scare the hell out of people” because if not, they will be going to hell. This all relates to, what is called, the finished work on the cross. Jesus accomplished it all – and told us to go forth and occupy until He returns. I think the church has abdicated that responsibility, raised the white flag and surrendered society to the devil. But, that goes back to what Jesus said, the path is narrow and there are few that will find it. But the path that leads to destruction is wide. I think we can see the path the leaders of this nation are leading us down. That just means true, Spiritual leaders, such as yourself and others, going against the grain, going against the current of culture, are fighting to stay on the narrow path that leads to eternal life. Valley network add value? Ability to bring not only funding, but Silicon Valley access and global best practices to local entrepreneurs. When was Fund launched and size of Fund? We were the first fund to raise more than $100M.  Fund we raised in 2012 was targeted at a $130M Cap.   We were over-subscribed at more than $150M but we needed to stay with the $130M cap. Huge first fund – much bigger than we expected The fund is fully deployed now; Macro economy tanked and the tech and e-commerce ecosystem  We have now three unicorns with another coming…  We raised another fund of $175M in 2018 which we are investing out of today. Investment themes – what types of technologies & deals do you look for? SHOW NOTES KEY IDEAS:  One of the mantras of this show is that if you want to farm and to farm successfully you need to be willing to relocate.  This has everything to do with land prices and land quality.  If you live in an area that has inflated land prices due to land buyers that are not ag-related, your chances of making it and farming full-time decrease because of this increased land payment. I have never had a great answer, only a good one, for how to go about finding the right place outside of your area.  There are millions of farmable acres across the United States.  How can a person truly go find just the right spot? SHOW NOTES KEY IDEAS:  There is a multitude of obstacles to entering farming, growing your farm, and becoming profitable.  And, there is an old model of making it work, that carries some pretty risks - debt.  Using debt to purchase your farm, purchase equipment, cover operating costs, or procure livestock is the norm in farming.  The problem with debt is that you have to service it, and it can control you as well as the decisions you make on your farm. Today's episode is one of those moments.  Our guest today, Austin Maness of Harvest Returns, talks with us about alternatives to debt and another funding source through investment.  Austin has a farming background and a really interesting path that has led him to become the chief operating officer of Harvest Returns. In his current role, Austin looks for opportunities to match investors with farmers who need funding.  It is a very interesting concept both for the farmer as well as the investor.  While this interview was more focused on benefits and risks to farmers, we touch on the investor side of things as well. There was a recurring theme in this interview, and that is that every project of this type is different.  In some cases, Austin deals with several investors with a few thousand dollars to invest, and they want to be involved in agriculture.  In others, he is dealing with investors with hundreds of thousands of dollars, and they have their eye on one segment of farming. It was clear through the interview that the opportunities for farmers as well as investors are kind of limited only by their imagination with this model.  Harvest Returns is a one of its kind, first in the field company that has identified this strategy of funding farms. Do you leave a reserve or have an allocation from each Fund for follow-on investment to support portfolio companies through additional rounds? Sturgeon leaves about 10% reserves for follow-on investments Spend some time on how you source deals, what you are looking for in an investment in a co. for in this geographic region (game-changing tech, solving major pain points, etc.) We like market-place bus. models, e-commerce and SaaS  Can capture customer base, then capture other services… Had to solve for:  Logistics, payment solutions (< 10% Visa/MC penetration), then needed to have products on the platform that people could buy Effectively starting e-commerce businesses building from the ground up But the opportunity is huge with attractive returns, 4X-5X+ Even though we focus on “frontier” markets and regions, what we are presenting is a business bet not a country bet… Public-private partnerships you have developed and how that works… There isn’t a well-established venture investing ecosystem in these countries By product of our investing in the region, though, creates jobs, especially among youth -  So, we are adding lots of value in infrastructure, in case of e-commerce you’re helping the national logistics company become more efficient. In some cases, govt. co-invests with us, reduces impediments to establishing new businesses, etc. Where does Sturgeon’s capital come from mainly?  Family offices, geographic diversity? Are you currently accepting new investments into Fund 2?  First close in June 2020 Fund 2 will be capped at $25MM; 2/3 of the way there now. Before we launch any fund we spend 6-12 months building a pipeline, doing diligence and de-risking; then we know how much we need to raise.  Rather than raising a pool of money and then hunting for deals. How to Survive 911 Emergencies Nancy May pt 1 (https://kcrpodcast.com/51wwppqp9al-_sy600_/)“9-1-1, What’s your emergency?” Those are the first words most people will hear when the pick up the phone to call for emergency help. Police, Fire, Rescue, Ambulance… The dispatcher asks that question so he or she knows how to route the call for the fastest response. But, what if you are caring for another person? What if it is your responsibility to provide care for an elderly parent or family member? Someone whose disabled our unable to care for themselves? What if they do not want you to call 9-1-1? I have heard of some people that were hooked up to oxygen tanks, etc. at home and the power goes out and they have died. Do in home systems like that have battery back-up systems? Let’s shift gears slightly. What if the person you are caring for is taken to the hospital, but the hospital has a policy that you cannot stay. “Just “drop them off” and go home and wait for us to call you?” You provide some tips on this in your book, correct? You also talk about how to assist the first responders and help them while they are there, in home, correct? What if you are not living with the person who needs help. For example, they are independent and have been able to care for themselves. My kids live about 5 miles or so from me, as an example. If someone was in a situation like that and, let’s use your situation of the hurricane blowing through and the roads are not passible for a few days afterward. And you get a phone call from the loved one saying “they don’t feel well.” What should you do? How can you get the first responders to the persons home and get them inside to render aid? Why? Well, to discuss this today is someone who IS NOT remaining silent. In fact, he has been on the front lines of opposition to these illegal activities in the State of Illinois. He knows what he is supposed to be doing until Jesus returns. He knows where he is supposed to be in obedience to the Lord’s command on his life. The question I have for you is this: DO YOU? You have seen all of the events unfolding on the news. Panic is everywhere… This is NOTHING as compared to what the “days of tribulation” will be like. As Jesus described, these are only the “birth pangs.” Believe me, if you are not a believer, “You ain’t seen nothing yet!” Take a moment and ask the Lord to forgive you of your sins. Ask Him to become the Lord and Savior of your life. Ask Him to give you a NEW SPIRIT – one that makes you a “Child of God Himself!” THAT is the only thing that matters in Eternity. John Meacham has served Christ’s Church as a Christian author, lay pastor, supply preacher, elder, workshop leader, small-group coordinator, Bible-study instructor, and Sunday-school teacher. As a part of his church work, John developed a small-group program titled AIM (An Involved Membership) and prepared a group study guide for the book “Is Your Church Heavenly? A Question from Christ for Every Christian” (published in 2008) John Meacham spent eight days at the Sea of Galilee in 2005. During this time, he received a new revelation from Christ that involved messages that spoke of the state of the seven churches in today’s modern time. His previously released work, 'Is Your Church Heavenly?' details both his experience and the messages he received, and I recommend that book to you. How is that? With all of the attacks on the Bible, on Christians and on Christianity in particular, not just in far flung areas of the world, but here in the United States, this is proof we are closer than ever to the soon return of Jesus, correct? We are spirits. We have a soul. We live in a body. We are basically triune beings as well. The real “us” will live forever. These bodies will not live forever. But WE will live forever. The only thing is, WE get to choose where we will spend Eternity. God does not send anyone to hell. He allows them to go there of their own choosing. All He is doing is honoring their desire.   Scripture says, “He will give to the desires of your heart.”  If we do not desire to live for Him here, in this life - then He allows us to live without Him in the next life. And that is one decision you will regret for all of Eternity. John, if someone wants to get in touch with you, how can they do that? I’ll put links to that in the show notes below. Folks, time is short. TIME.  Not eternity. TIME is simply a blip on the scale of Eternity. And our life on the timeline is just a wisp of smoke at that. You can believe and accept what the Lord did for you…or you can ignore it. Your choice. Your decision. And NO DECISION is a decision. So, John and I urge you to just pray a short prayer, between you, the Father and Jesus the Son. Acknowledging your past. Asking for and receiving forgiveness of your sin in the Name of Jesus.
