Send us a textMore than four years after we discussed the first film in the series, we're returning to the depths of Clive Barker's imagination. Some of us more reluctantly than others. But make no mistake, it's time to play.Puzzle boxes, people without skin, chains with fishhooks, Kirsty, people with nails or pins in their heads, blood and goo, Julia. Yes, they're all back for more in Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988)!
John and Craig decipher mystery box shows, where the premise and audience experience involve solving the puzzle of what's really happening. They look at strategies for revealing clues and information, being mindful of the audience's expectations, and the importance of the emotional journey inside the labyrinth. We also announce a new video game, discuss what we can learn by revisiting old projects, follow up on unlocked pages and home automation, and answer listener questions on live instruments, pulling story from D&D campaigns, and where to draw the line between INT. and EXT. We were trying to teach some young leaders the importance of teamwork. One of the exercises I used was to have them put together a puzzle. (I thought it was a bright idea.) You tear off a page of a magazine, tear it into pieces, dump it into the middle of each small group, and see who could put their pictures together first. It didn't work too well. See, I forgot one little thing. I forgot to give them a copy of the complete picture so they could see what it should look like when it was all together. Duh! Now, I've tried to work on one of those big, many-pieces puzzles myself, and I've had the same frustration because I didn't know where the top of the puzzle box was. It was really hard to put the pieces together when the complete picture wasn't there. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The Top of Life's Puzzle Box." Now, I'm not the first person to describe life being like a puzzle. There are so many pieces; family pieces, friend pieces, children pieces, career pieces; the pieces of school, work, success, failure. The nagging questions like, "Who am I?" "Where am I going?" "What do all these pieces mean?" "What are they supposed to make?" Well, I found the top of the box. It's in God's book, the Bible, found in Colossians 1:16 - "All things were created by Him and for Him." Now, that's speaking of Jesus Christ. And there are six powerful words there; words that can finally pull all those pieces together, "Created by Him and for Him." You can begin to put the pieces together when you put your name in that verse. I'll leave a blank. "______ was created by Jesus and for Jesus." So you want to find out how all those pieces make sense? There's going to be a terrible hole in your heart until you have Jesus, because He's the one our heart was created for. No earth thing, no earth person, no earth achievement can fill it. You may have some great pieces in your life, or some pretty scared and fading pieces. But life is still powerless and disconnected, with often meaningless pieces in front of you. You need the whole picture, and our Creator has told us in that statement from the Bible what that is. He gave His only Son, Jesus, because that relationship that we were made by and for is missing in our lives because we've built a wall between us and our Creator by doing life our way instead of His way, pushed Him to the edge. You know why our life seems so disconnected and confused? We're created to live for Him and we've chosen to live for us. We've run our own lives when our Creator was supposed to. And according to the Bible, "Your sins have separated you from your God." He's the only one who knows why you're here. He put you here. The only One who has the love you're looking for your whole life is on the other side of a wall. That wall's got a name. It's called sin. No wonder things aren't adding up. We're stuck with the pieces, but we're cut off from the whole picture. But this statement out of the Bible "created by Him and for Him" tells us where the hope is for things to finally come together. "He forgave us all our sin" it says. He nailed our sins... my sins to His cross. It was our sin and its death penalty that has kept us from our Creator. And it was all those sins that God sent His Son to die for on that cross. The pieces of your life finally start to fit together when you come to that cross and say, "Jesus, for me." In simple faith you say, "Lord, it's for me, and I want you and your forgiveness for me." If you've never done that; if you're ready to meet the One that you were made by and made for, I invite you to visit our website as soon as you can - ANewStory.com - and find out there how to be sure you belong to Him. It's like seeing the top of life's puzzle box and the pieces finally come together. You're very, very close to finding the reason you were born, and finding the person you were born for.

This week, I talk with Danielle Trussoni about her new installment in The Puzzle Series, The Puzzle Box! We dive into how she created this genre-mashup of a series, what piqued her interest in puzzles, and the puzzle masters she works with for her books. The Puzzle Box SynopsisIt is the Year of the Wood Dragon, and the ingenious Mike Brink has been invited to Tokyo, Japan, to open the legendary Dragon Box.The box was constructed during one of Japan's most tumultuous periods, when the samurai class was disbanded and the shogun lost power. In this moment of crisis, Emperor Meiji locked a priceless Imperial secret in the Dragon Box. Only two people knew how to open the box—Meiji and the box's sadistic constructor—and both died without telling a soul what was inside or how to open it.Every twelve years since then, in the Year of the Dragon, the Imperial family holds a clandestine contest to open the box. It is devilishly difficult, filled with tricks, booby traps, poisons, and mind-bending twists. Every puzzle master who has attempted to open it has died in the process. But Brink is not just any puzzle master. He may be the only person alive who can crack it. His determination is matched only by that of two sisters, descendants of an illustrious samurai clan, who will stop at nothing to claim the treasure.Brink's quest launches him on a breakneck adventure across Japan, from the Imperial Palace in Tokyo to the pristine forests of Hakone to an ancient cave in Kyushu. In the process, he discovers the power of Meiji's hidden treasure, and—more crucially—the true nature of his extraordinary talent.

A woman discovers her dead brother-in-law come back to life as a bloody, skeletal form and honors a request to help rejuvenate his body in order to escape the demonic entities who are after him. Hellraiser is the final movie we are reviewing in Spooky Season and it is long overdue. The Clive Barker classic still holds up today as an excellent horror movie featuring great practical effects and creepy characters. This film provided viewers who were used to the likes of Jason, Michael, and Freddy with a completely different experience, showing that ultimate pleasure comes with a cost. Scott "Huckman" joins us this episode to discuss Hellraiser and close out Spooky Season. The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible (2007) tells of his attempt to follow the hundreds of rules in the Good Book. In this episode of the Cinema Australia Podcast, I'm joined by director, writer, co-producer, co-cinematographer, editor and visual effects supervisor Jack Dignan to discuss his latest film, Puzzle Box. Jack began his career as an Australian film journalist, publishing written reviews across multiple platforms while working on his own DIY short films. In the lead up to After She Died, Jack spent some time working on high-profile Hollywood productions such as Thor: Love and Thunder, Furiosa, Elvis, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in various roles. Puzzle Box follows substance abuser Kait who flees to a house in the woods to self-rehabilitate, while her sister Olivia joins to document the process. Following their arrival the house's layout begins to change, trapping them inside an inescapable puzzle box. When I interview a filmmaker like Jack, I'm quickly reminded why I started Cinema Australia. To me, there's nothing quite like interviewing an independent filmmaker at the beginning of their career. Hearing Jack's stories about the making of his two films was a great thrill for me and I can't thank Jack enough for being a part of this Podcast. Anyway… enjoy.
On this episode Andrew chats with Aussie filmmaker Jack Dignan about his found footage horror film, Puzzle Box. Olivia (Laneikka Denne) heads out to a remote house in the woods to help her sister Kait (Kaitlyn Boyé) rehabilitate and escape her life of addiction. Olivia aims to document the process, almost in a way to show how far Kait will heal and change. Little does she know, instead of documenting Kait's rehabilitation, she instead manages to document the labyrinth-like house that they become trapped in where time loops over itself and unsettling events occur in the night. Puzzle Box will have its Australian Premiere at the upcoming A Night of Horror International Film Festival in Sydney on September 29. This is the second time that Jack has had a film screen at the festival, with his previous film After She Died winning the Best Australian Feature Film and Best Australian Feature Performance in 2022. Jack talks about where his interest in found footage films comes from, how working on films like Marvel's Shang-Chi and George Miller's Furiosa differs from working on an independent feature film, as well as how his previous work as a film critic informs his work as a director. Hello and welcome to Castle Talk where we talk to writers and creators of today's genre worlds, I'm your host Jason Henderson, publisher at Castle Bridge Media, home of the Castle of Horror Anthology series. Tonight we're chatting with Danielle Trussoni, best-selling author of Angelology and often-horror columnist for the New York Times. Her new book is the supernatural thriller, THE PUZZLE MASTER (Random House, on sale 6/13). Booklist recently gave THE PUZZLE MASTER a glowing review, aptly describing it as “A surefire hit… [THE PUZZLE MASTER] is an ambitious story, expertly told…. A sequel, The Puzzle Box, is in the works, and it can't come soon enough.” Couldn't have described it better myself! This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4268760/advertisement

We're taking another week off this week, as some of us persist in trying to move across the country, so please enjoy one of our very favorite Baby-Sitters Club Club episodes from the past few years this week, and we'll be back next week to talk about Four Weddings and, unfortunately, a Funeral! A wonderfully surreal and slightly scary world awaits all those who are brave enough to crawl through the looking glass, speak their own secret names aloud, and become new initiates of the legendary Baby-Sitters Club. But this is just the beginning of the quest, and danger awaits: Will the boys be confounded by the deadly Puzzle Box, disoriented by the mysterious Map Game, or debilitated by the incessant ringing of Claudia's terrible telephone? Answers: Yes, yes, and yes. Fortunately, these guys are professional gamers, so there's probably no need to worry. Music credits: Thanks as always to original Baby Boy Scott Lamb for the intro music, and to Superbrat for the outro music. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jack-shepherd8/support

This is the end. Join the original Creeps trio for one last journey into the world of weird discussions and inevitable talk about dicks, nu metal, and intercourse with amphibians. If you've listened to this show for any amount of time, that sentence should not come as any sort of surprise to you. Come reminisce with us on the last few fun years of the show that you were apart of just as much as we were. We love each and every one of you, whether you interacted with us through social media, sent us cool stuff, or simply clicked download even once. It's been a pleasure to (hopefully) have made you all laugh and bring even a sliver of a bright spot to your days. We were just three best friends who wanted to sit down in front of a microphone and do what we would have done even if one weren't present. We were lucky enough to walk away with a lot of love and support too. So sit back and laugh with us one last time, except if you're on Stitcher where you'll be sitting down with us sometime in 2023 probably. Good evening.

Cube (1997) Review This week on the Sordid Cinema Podcast, we revisit Vincenzo Natali's 1997 science-fiction horror film Cube; a low-budget, high-concept, mind-bending, sci-fi-thriller that revolves around people trying to escape a giant cube made of 17,576 different rooms, some of which feature inescapable deadly traps. We debate if Cube was ahead of its time and discuss why we feel the film was so influential to other movies and TV shows like Squid Game, Battle Royale and Saw, to name just a few. But what really interests us is the question: how many ways can one man film a movie that all takes place in one room and still keep it engaging? All this and more!
We have chosen this movie... And he has come. It's time to get our souls torn apart as we dive into Hellraiser, released September 18th in 1987. It's the horror film that spawned the classic franchise and gave birth to the iconic Pinhead, even though the original creator really wishes people would stop calling him that. What is Maxwell's demon, and what is its role in biology? How do molecular demons underpin life? Does life really defy entropy? On this episode of Big Biology, we talk with Paul Davies, a cosmologist at Arizona State University and the Director of the Beyond Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science. His recent book, "The Demon in the Machine," tackles Schrodinger's big question "What is life?," arguing that information is the key that distinguishes living from non-living things. Soon the box's new owner has unleashed the evil Pinhead, a member of a race of supernatural beings known as Cenobites. Pinhead proceeds to murder numerous clubgoers in an attempt to gain power and fully free himself into the earthly realm. He faces unexpected opposition, however, from a television reporter investigating the mysterious club murders. When she discovers the truth behind the enigmatic puzzle box, she realizes that only she can stop the carnage. "It has been said that our children are a puzzle and that we need to put them back together one piece at a time. Yet, as I sit with my son who has Autism I realize that he is not the puzzle....we are." The author, Angel Thompson, has written three devotional books for parents with special needs and combined these books into a trilogy. Each book contains personal stories that she and her family have experienced when her son, Joshua, was diagnosed with Autism. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 59 children will be diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. This book is a must for families that are taking the journey of having a loved one diagnosed with Autism. Some families will feel lonely and desperate and Angel Thompson is leading them to the one support that many families need, God. The True Intimacy of Becoming a Water Walker is the first book that illustrates how to trust in God and know that he will not let you down in any situation that you may face. "To be a water walker means to be a person who is willing to step out of one's comfort zone in faith, getting your feet wet, and trusting that God will not let you down." True Intimacy is the second book that illustrates how to experience the true intimacy with God by allowing him to come into your heart, have a relationship with him, and allow him to take charge of your life. The third book, Life Inside the Box of a Jigsaw Puzzle, explores how families can grasp God's grace, strength, and hope to understand the world inside the Autism Spectrum. Her son Joshua wrote a book when he was 7 years old, Jelly Pirates. You can find his book and Angel's books on Lulu, Barnes and Nobel, and Amazon. In March, Matt and Scott teamed up with Stephen of Analog Jones to record some live episodes, and this week showcases the first of the "threevening" discussions, the inimitable Hellraiser 3: Hell on Earth from 1992! It's got the coolest goth club the early 90s had to offer, Puzzle Box architecture and the worst (best?) Cenobite ever, CD Cenobite. It also features arguably the best Pinhead portrayal and soliloquies. Relive the weirdness of the lesser Hellraiser sequels this week on Horror Movie Night - live!
