This week we welcome Steve Bruce to Business of Sport. Steve played over 700 games for some of England's biggest teams, most notably captaining Manchester United in the 90's, winning multiple league titles and FA cups. After retirement, Steve made the move into management, taking charge of over 1000 games with the likes of Newcastle, Aston Villa, Birmingham and Wigan. In todays episode, we discuss: Life as a player: How Steve found his way from early beginnings at Gillingham to the heights of Manchester United. How did contracts differ from what we see in the market today, and what did the finances look like? Sir Alex Ferguson: what made the former Manchester United manager so special and what was it like to play under him? How to captain the likes of Eric Cantona and Ryan Giggs, and what did the team do to support them? Steve's leadership style and the importance of managing the individual in a team environment. The move into management: How did Steve leverage the experiences as a player to become a successful Premier League Manager? After four jobs in two years, Steve talks through the importance of finding stability and consistency at Birmingham. The difference between playing with big personalities and managing them, and how to get the best out of the ‘maverick' player. Managing up and down and the relationship with the owner: from falling out with Simon Jordan to being coveted by Dave Whelan. The hiring and firing process: what actually happens in the crazy employment cycle of a football manager? A life in football: How did Steve balance a young family with the demands of professional football? From supporting Newcastle to managing them through a difficult time in the club's history. How did that impact Steve and his family? The responsibility associated with ensuring players reach their full potential, and the biggest reasons some don't manage to. What is next? 40+ years and not stopping yet, what is in store in the future?

**CamelPhat** Dave Whelan and Mike Di Scala met each other in Liverpool record shop 3 Beat Records and were both disc jockeys at nightclubs in the city. Di Scala had previously released music as a member of Rezonance Q and Ultrabeat and also as a solo artist. Dave Whelan hosted his own Jubilee club night since 2004 and the two were resident DJs at Society nightclub. They began producing music together as members of The Chosen Few, along with Les Calvert,[6] and the trio also managed the Adhesive record label as a sublabel of All Around the World. The Chosen Few released a cover of the Tears for Fears song "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" (Adhesive, 2004) and a remix of the original song appeared on Tears Roll Down (Greatest Hits 82–92). As a duo Whelan and Di Scala released several remixes as under various names such as The Bassline Hustlers, Men from Mars and Da Mode. Using the name Pawn Shop, they released a single "Shot Away" (All Around the World, 2006), based on a sample of "Gimme Shelter" by The Rolling Stones, which peaked at number 100 on the UK Singles Chart. Following this, they released several singles as Whelan & Di Scala on various labels, including their own label Bachelor Pad Recordings. The two DJs also released music using other aliases such as Wheels & Disco, Mancini and Shake n' Jack. From 2008 to 2014, Dave Whelan was also a radio presenter on Juice FM. In 2010, they released their first recordings as CamelPhat on their own label Vice Records. As CamelPhat, the duo initially wore wrestling masks to conceal their identity because they "just wanted the people to judge the music and not us". In 2011, Dave Whelan and Mike Di Scala became owners of a Liverpool nightclub Mansion. The duo released numerous singles and EPs on various record labels and some CamelPhat songs appeared on the Ultratop charts in Belgium, such as "The Act" (Spinnin' Deep, 2014), "Paradigm" featuring A*M*E (Axtone, 2015), "Constellations" (Spinnin' Deep, 2015), "Make 'Em Dance" from Light Night EP (Suara, 2016) and "Hangin' Out with Charlie" from Hangin' with Charlie EP (Suara, 2017). The duo's collaboration with Elderbrook on "Cola" (Defected, 2017) was an international hit single which peaked at number one on the US Billboard Dance Club Songs chart and was nominated for Best Dance Recording at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards. They released further singles and EPs and had other hit singles with "Panic Room" (Loudmouth Music, 2018), a collaboration with Au/Ra and "Breathe" (Pryda Presents, 2018), a collaboration with Cristoph featuring Jem Cooke. In December 2018, CamelPhat signed to RCA Records. In June 2019, they released "Be Someone", a collaboration with Jake Bugg, as the lead single from their upcoming debut album. **TRACKLIST** * CamelPhat, ARTBAT - For A Feeling (Extended Mix) * Camelphat - The Quad (Original Mix) * CamelPhat - Constellations * ARTBAT, Sailor & I - Best Of Me (CamelPhat Remix) * CamelPhat feat. Not least because Winston has a very strong commercial background, working for Dave Whelan and Mike Ashley. Together they both share a belief about what needs to happen in society. Spencer only met Tony last summer (2020). Tony wanted to buy some land from Spencer. In the end, Spencer was offered a role in the WARS Group. It escalated very quickly. This is very much the way with Tony Evans. He does not let the grass grow! We were also joined by Roger Fenwick from Mantra Capital. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Roger-Fenwick.mp4 WARS Group Future If you've been considering green investing as part of your portfolio, what do you think to this strategy, as explained by Tony Evans? WARS Group brand represents things where DISPARITY exists. This presents an opportunity to an entrepreneur. The WARS Group will attempt to tackle the following 3 areas: - CLIMATE - HEALTH - ROADS http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/3-Core-Strategies-for-WARS-Group.mp4 Winston Higham - the new CEO and what a past too! Winston worked 30 years for Dave Whelan ("a smart cookie")and later Mike Ashley. Two great entrepreneurs. Dave Whelan was chairman of Wigan Athletic FC and ran DW Sports and JJB. Winston learnt an awful lot from Dave and brings that knowledge and passion to his new role at the WARS Group. In this next clip Winston says a few words about both Dave Whelan and Mike Ashley. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Winston-Higham.mp4 Winston explained that he was aware of companies with huge numbers of packaging cardboard boxes, just set fire to them. Not good at all for the environment. You can see why he is so committed to getting this part of the WARS Group right. In a commercial company, with responsibility for profit and loss, every penny counts. So, whilst in his previous retail businesses, being ethical had to be baked into their strategy. Because they were competing against others without the same ethical standpoint. It's not just about recycling, the WARS Group want to help people eat properly. Winston spoke about the frustrations with regard to obesity. They want to help people at source. The goals of WARS Health are: Spencer Burnham - Waste & Recycling Green investing is really important to people. Investors want to know that the businesses they work with, invest in,

Having acquired business after business, seamlessly integrating staff and suitable skillsets, DW Sports now has over 3000 employees and a dual brand platform that's getting stronger nationwide. Escape Your Limits talks to DW Sports director, Scott Best, about managing growth, momentum and more. Watch the full episode on YouTube – https://youtu.be/LMt44nK3EnQ Starting out as a contractor working on an oil refinery, the taste of earning money meant Scott put off university, instead concentrating on revolutionising the company, rising to success before heading up the business 12 years later. Scott's father-in-law and DW CEO, Dave Whelan, built 450 stores under the JJB brand – a fitness giant of retail space. On the back of this sports venture, he expanded into a portfolio of gym and health clubs. Scott joined Dave in buying back the health clubs side of JJB to form DW Sports after Dave left the company. JJB was subsequently bought by Sports Direct and went into administration. Between them, Scott and Dave built this portfolio to 71 health clubs before buying another seven old LA Fitness locations following their acquisition by PureGym. Then followed DW Sports' acquisition of Fitness First. Gaining strength and experience with every acquisition, DW Sports is now in the position of putting the best of every outfit into practice for the ultimate in exercise experience. Most recently, Scott has been paramount in the process of DW Sports acquiring Fitness First UK. In this new evolution, Scott's ability of establishing a sense of community through fitness makes it an acquisition supergroup that can do no wrong. With 55 joint sites with retail and leisure club, 123 clubs, and stand alone retail locations, DW Sports knows the power of dual branding benefits and offering tailored experiences in the right locations. On top of these acquisitions and developments, Scott has also set up a successful boutique offering in Best's Bootcamp – a 50-minute full-body workout with treadmills and functional fitness equipment, and Best Cycle – a 45-minute low impact calorie burn spin cycle session. Episode Highlights: How to balance business with education, what you can learn on the job and through experience, where to follow particular career paths and how to deal with the regrets of missing either option available. Why merging business opportunities together is much more beneficial than multiple production / process silos in leveraging customer experience and opportunities. How to recover after overexpansion and when you need to consolidate your business for the greater good. The ways in which you can benefit from a consolidated middle market through maintaining quality service and investment. Learn the importance of integration when bringing two cultures and management styles together, as opposed to dictating one overriding plan. The Blizzard Q&A recorded live at the National Football Museum as part of the Manchester Football Writing Festival, on the evening of 1st September. With a panel of Blizzard contributors - David Conn, Andy Brassell and editor Jonathan Wilson - hosted by the Football Ramble's Marcus Speller. A heavyweight first half features discussion on the key takeaways from this summer's transfer window, the effect of the new Premier League TV deal, a mention for the Chinese stock market and some talk about financial fair play and the corrupt nest of debauchery that is Fifa. In the second half the panel looked at footballers' diva moments, answer a fan's query as to WTF is going on at Man United, ponder the lifespan of a manager and the tactical dunce that is Laurent Blanc. There's also some chat on the role of the full-back, and recollections of difficult/awful interviews, which throws up the unlikely triumvirate of Darius Vassell, Dave Whelan and Colin Kazim Richards. As ever with our live events we do the best we can with the sound quality at our disposal, what with roving mikes, the odd bit of feedback, guaranteed big laughs and on this occasion Jonathan Wilson doing an impression of a raving Louis van Gaal spiking the top of the microphone range. Those minor issues aside, we trust you'll enjoy the podcast.
