Join Freddie Laker and this week's guest, David Segura, as they take a deeper look at what it takes to build a media empire from the ground up. David has been a force in the media space since he founded Giant Media before being acquired by AdKnowledge, and his passion for the Creator Economy has led him to invest in over 40 businesses, including the founding of his latest company, Glassbox Media. Tune in for an inside look at what it takes to create a successful media enterprise these days.
BIO: David Segura is an accomplished entrepreneur and investor. He currently serves as the CEO of Glassbox Media. This podcast platform enables Podcast Hosts to grow their brand revenue and new listener base with direct investment and technology support. STORY: David invested in and joined a startup in New York. The company was growing fast, and after their Series A funding, they got convinced by the lead investor to expand to London and other international cities prematurely. The company could not sustain the growth. LEARNING: Be deliberate with your growth plans. Focus on quality growth that you can build on. “Be deliberate with your growth plans.”David Segura Guest profilehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/david-segura-91822a1/ (David Segura) is an accomplished entrepreneur and investor. He currently serves as the CEO of https://glassboxmedia.com/ (Glassbox Media). This podcast platform enables Podcast Hosts to grow their brand revenue and new listener base with direct investment and technology support. David previously founded Giant Media, serving as the CEO from launch through acquisition. The company was an early Video Advertising Exchange that included AMEX, L'Oreal, and Dollar Shave Club clients. David launched the company in 2009, and an AdTech roll-up acquired it in 2014. David is also an active startup investor with upwards of 60 investments. Worst investment everDavid got interested in a startup company based in New York and invested in 2017. He believed that the genesis of that business was terrific, and the founder was brilliant. The founder even convinced him to get on board as an investor and as the chief strategy officer. The company was doing well in New York, and they decided to expand to other cities. To do so, the company had to raise funds. They raised $12 million in their Series A, and the lead investor was British, and they wanted the company to devote a lot of that capital to expand into London as soon as possible. The data indicated that they should double, even triple down in New York and not expand internationally. David tried convincing the founder that expanding internationally was not a strategic decision and they should instead push back. But they didn't. They just went with the flow and used a significant amount of the capital raised to expand internationally. Not just London, but other places as well. The fast growth was too much for the company, and it couldn't handle the capacity. Lessons learnedBe deliberate with your growth plans. Sometimes it's prudent to slow it down to be more sustainable. When investing in a startup, it's ok not to know what you're doing or be a little scared. Identify the problem holding your business back and solve it. If you keep ignoring the elephant in the room, you'll regret it. Andrew's takeawaysGrowth, in and of itself, is not everything; it's got to be quality, growth that you can build on. The growth that goes beyond the capacity of the operations to deliver what you're promising is not good. Whenever you're expanding, locally or internationally, take the time to look at the risk and return. Actionable adviceWhether you're the founder, an angel investor, or even a VC, continually evaluate what the company is doing. Be honest with the senior executives and yourself and figure out ways to minimize risk. A lot of times, that means just focusing and narrowing down. No.1 goal for the next 12 monthsDavid's goal for the next 12 months is to grow Glassbox Media into a US household name that creators and podcast hosts think of when they need help to scale their audience and revenue. Learning notes from this episode: An algorithm is just a set of instructions that you put into a computer. JS created a prototype of his algorithm using a spreadsheet. The aim of his algorithm was to give out loans to customers. He bought lending data from the Lending Club and tested it against a control group. This means one set of loan applications was assessed by the algorithm and the other was done manually. By doing this, JS proved that his algorithm was making correct decisions. JS Kung does not have a co-founder. This is contrary to what a lot of prominent VCs say they want, but is in line with several successful founders who have spoken to us: Robyn Exton at HER, Asaf Navot at Home Made, and David Segura who sold Giant Media and is now one of NYC’s top angel investors. David Segura is a perfect example of how non-techies can thrive in technology. His first venture, Giant Media, was a native video advertising exchange which David sold for millions to an ad tech company backed by TPG & JMI in 2014. Since then David has invested in almost 50 startups, many of which have technology at their core. I met David in the early Naughties, when we studied together at the University of Chicago College. At the time, it is fair to say we both had little knowledge of or interest in technology. Yet, after studying Political Science, David made a successful career in tech entrepreneurship and investing. He has never learnt to code. In this interview, David talks about: How he worked with his CTO at Giant Media to scale and sell an ad tech platform That you don’t actually need a CTO to get started if you are a non-technical founder Knowing how to work with the tech team being more important than coding Leading a syndicate to invest in a Y Combinator startup How to invest in tech and biotech without having technical or scientific training Why non-technical founders are usually more successful entrepreneurs If you want to delve deeper then, check out the Tech for Non-Technical Founders course.

David Segura is a veteran when it comes to the startup world although he hadn’t originally planned for that to be the case. David began his career in a corporate consulting role but quickly realized that it wasn't the right path for him. He found that he couldn’t excel in the rigid hierarchies of the corporate ladder and decided to jump into the startup scene. David briefly worked at two startups, soon understanding that to achieve what he wanted in life, he had to venture off and put his destiny into his own hands. He founded and was the CEO of Giant Media, a leading advertising/media company at the time, eventually selling it to AdKnowledge after six years. David’s exit was a success and with the money and experience he gained, he jumped head-first into the Angel investing world, as many other former founders do. He’s invested in 40 companies so far like Everipedia, Mogul, and PerfectPrice and we learn about what type of traits/characteristics David looks for in a company and a founder when making those types of investments. Most recently, David joined Carbon, a price stable cryptocurrency as its Chief Operating Officer and we talk about the blockchain economy and what the future of Cryptocurrencies, stable coins, and other blockchain based companies looks like.
Diva Tech Talk interviewed Christine Rice, formerly President of VisionIT (www.visionit.com), and now CEO/President, of its IT staffing division: VisionPro (http://www.visionproteam.com/). VisionPro has 20 offices throughout the U.S., and is also global with offices in Canada, Mexico and Brazil. As a child, Christine had not been partial to technology subjects. “I got involved through my siblings,” she said. Both her older brother and sister worked at EDS (Electronic Data Systems). While she was in high school, “hearing my sister talk about IT, and the projects she was working on,” spurred Christine. When she graduated high school, she also worked EDS, while simultaneously attending Wayne County Community College in Detroit (www.wcccd.edu/), and then Central Michigan University in Midland, Michigan (https://www.cmich.edu/) obtaining her B.S. in business management. Christine’s first EDS position was as an orientation specialist and then she moved into employee relations/human resources. “Our job was to lower the company’s liability in hiring, firing, and disciplining employees.” Over 15 years, she worked her way up to regional HR manager, with a substantial team, collaborating with EDS leaders at every level. Christine left EDS to join her brother, David Segura (https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidseguravisionit/) after he founded VisionIT in 1997. VisionIT, today, is a global software development company, systems integrator, reseller of key solutions (like SAP), and innovation lab for the development of new applications. But at startup, it was a technology services and Web development venture. As David realized his need for increasing talent “He came to me for help. I didn’t realize helping would quickly turn into a full-time job. What a journey!” “As a startup company, you really wear multiple hats,” Christine acknowledged. “I started selling and promoting the company.” Due to her strong network of established relationships she cemented large clients quickly, and the customer base multiplied. She concentrated on human resources, hiring/firing, fostering talent at VisionIT. “As we were serving companies, doing application development and a variety of projects, they would come back to us,” and ask for resources to make additional progress. So, Christine decided “why don’t I concentrate on building the staffing side of the business?” Two of Christine’s strengths are the ability to clearly communicate, and consultative business-building. “I like being in front of the customer,” she stated. “As a company, it is where we get our best ROI, because I truly take an interest in the customer’s problems, and how we can solve them.” She also points to her relentless work ethic: “I was wired to work hard and deliver. And people will focus on that.” Christine shared lessons for entrepreneurs. “When you are hiring people,” she said, “hire slow, but fire fast.” As a leader she stressed that “integrity is very important,” and any leader needs to “build trust with your organization.” To do that, she deploys consistent transparency. Christine’s personal happiness emanates from caring for her family (two college age sons and her husband) and “corporate success and hitting our goals.” To achieve balance, she stresses time management: carving out time for things that have the most priority and being disciplined in using your time well. Christine’s guiding principles for aspiring leaders include: surround yourself with other strong leaders; get involved in your community; listen, attentively, and never stop learning. In her philanthropy life, she works with children and young adults of Hispanic origin. “It’s important for inner city kids to see people who look like them be successful,” she said. She speaks frequently to students and gives presentations on behalf of Latina/Latino organizations who concentrate on education and careers. Her advice, especially for “the young folks” is: “Take that risk. If you’re not making yourself uncomfortable” according to Christine, you are not making progress and “dress for success --- mentally!
