Who says you can't be smart and joyful? Certainly not Ben V. Greene, the author of My Child Is Trans, Now What: A Joy-Centered Approach to Support. Ben joins us from St. Louis to cruelly bad-mouth Imo's Pizza, and also talk about the significance of science fiction, the work of Becky Chambers, the brilliance of Our Flag Means Death, The Fosters and Dispatches From Elsewhere, the conundrum of Dave Chappelle and Pretty Little Liars, the underground Facebook group that was his lifeline, the farce-fueled courtship that led to marriage, and the importance of a good squirt bottle in the home.
This week I spiraled out with brilliant television writer, showrunner and co-creator of YELLOWJACKETS (!!!!!!) Ashley Lyle! We talked nicotine and being 90s teens, the moment you realize you can hurt your mom's feelings, caring too much about what people think of you at the expense of the people who truly care, the vicious procrastination cycle and ADHD, anxiety & shame intertwined, unhinged goth childhood behavior, feeling replete with humiliation on CELEBRITY FAMILY FUED, and so much more! I also gave Ashley two Yellowjackets- specific shame game scenarios, which she was an incredible sport about (even though they fully elevated her heart rate- sorry Ashley!!!) If somehow you have not yet seen Yellowjackets, WATCH IT NOW! IT IS INCREDIBLE, TOP TIER TELEVISION!!!! Now that the strike is over, you can finish it and join the rest of us in waiting with bated breath for season three! Ashley has also written on Dispatches From Elsewhere, Narcos, The Originals, and more. Follow her on Twitter @ashannlyle! And you can follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok @elykreimendahl, and the pod on Twitter and Instagram @podshamespiral, where I'm regularly posting fun video clips of especially juicy or hilarious moments from the episodes. Editors - Laura Zempel and Nat Fuller The Emmy®-nominated BEEF editing team of Laura Zempel and Nat Fuller came into this project with plenty of experience crafting storylines featuring complicated characters and situations. Nat kicked off his career with another well-known Netflix property, STRANGER THINGS, starting as an assistant before transitioning to full editorial duties on the Duffer Brothers supernatural juggernaut. For Laura, her time in the editing suites of complex dramas began with assisting on DEXTER, to ultimately cutting on HBO's critically-acclaimed EUPHORIA. Created by Korean director Lee Sung Jin (Sunny) for Netflix, BEEF stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong as Danny Cho and Amy Lau, two strangers whose involvement in a road rage incident escalates into a prolonged feud. LAURA ZEMPEL In addition to her Emmy®-nominated work on BEEF, Laura's skills as an editor can be seen in EUPHORIA (2019-22), DISPATCHES FROM ELSEWHERE (2020) and ROOM 104 (2017-19). Prior to that, she assisted on HOUSE OF CARDS (2014), DEXTER (2011-13) and IF I CAN DREAM (2010). NAT FULLER Nat's journey to being an Emmy®-nominated editor began with assisting duties on the features MALEFICENT (2014) and THE LAST WITCH HUNTER (2015), in addition to the debut season of STRANGER THINGS (2017). Fuller would go on to co-edit the indie THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON (2019) amidst taking on lead editing duties for Seasons 2-4 for STRANGER THINGS (2017-22). This week on BEFORE THE BREAK, the boys sit down with actor, Lindsay Rootare. She's appeared in such shows as Dispatches From Elsewhere, The First Lady, The Staircase, First Wives Club, and Queens. Most recently she can be seen in the films Do Revenge, and Jerry and Marge Go Large. We discuss being more creative growing up in Detroit, being a backup dancer for Salt-N-Pepa, auditioning for everything she could, the struggle of meeting reps, being resourceful, sometimes having to pay to play, turning bookings into a math equation, the benefit of having reps in lots of markets, and in person auditions vs. self tapes.

A couple of years before ska broke on the radio, Fishbone—who was on Columbia Records at the time—released arguably the greatest ska song of the 90s: “Unyielding Conditioning,” a beautiful tune with a deep message that challenges us to re-examine the very fabric of our shared reality, and to grapple with the forces that control us and make us miserable. In 1993, the public was not ready for this amazing tune, and would not accept ska in the mainstream until Sublime’s “Date Rape” got into heavy rotation in 1995. But can you imagine what ska’s legacy would have been if “Unyielding Conditioning” had been a hit instead? This song came after a decade of Fishbone completely taking over the underground landscape within nearly every scene. They also released several landmark albums and had become the band everyone assumed would blow up. They were good enough, but the fact that they were so competent in all these genres worked against them as potential pop stars, even though, their secret weapon, Angelo Moore, was one of—if not—the greatest frontmen of all time. It was too much for the mainstream which preferred simple and easy to categorize. On this episode of In Defense of Ska, we talk with the great Angelo Moore and devote some serious time breaking down the lyrics for “Unyielding Conditioning.” We also discuss several key moments in Fishbone’s history, like their wild Soul Train performance, and their bizarre cameo in the cult film Tapeheads, which starred a young John Cusack & Tim Robbins. Angelo tells us what it feels like to stage dive from a literal balcony (He did it near the beginning of the 2010 documentary Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone). And he even tells us about his odd role in the alternate reality game, Jejun Institute, which would later inspire Jason Segal’s AMC drama Dispatches From Elsewhere. We killed the teen dream! This week, Peaches and Michael take a slo-mo strut down the hallway as they celebrate 1999's JAWBREAKER! In addition to discussing the film's Rocky Horror roots and impeccably curated punk rock queerness, our hosts explore the holy triumvirate of "teen bitches" that changed the way we view high school films forever. Joining the discussion is the legendary writer & director of JAWBREAKER itself, Darren Stein, who shares his insight on what happens when cult fandom claims a movie as their own. Then, Eve Lindley, acclaimed star of DISPATCHES FROM ELSEWHERE, stops by to discuss how her JAWBREAKER obsession has been a lifelong odyssey...and how, in many ways, the movie's characters reflect her own growth. From Pam Grier to the girl every teen fears, this episode's got it all!

Welcome to the Jejune Institute, a purveyor of divine nonchalance as well as many other oddities and the mortal enemy of the Elsewhere Society. Will you, like countless others (including Kalvin and Nick), fall down the rabbit hole of this Alternate Reality Game that popped up from elsewhere in San Francisco in 2008 and disappeared in 2011 after inducting 10,000 people? Is it a cult, or something more. We dive into the Institute, a 2013 documentary based on the 2008 Alternate Reality Game and the inspiration for AMC's Dispatches from Elsewhere, and what made it so enthralling that people became “indoctrinated” and some even forgot where the game ends and reality begins. The evil Octavio Coleman, Esq and the exuberant Commander 14 will guide the search for Eva, a mysterious missing girl, as we decode The Dispatches from Elsewhere. „You're worth more than what you can give to other people. You deserve love, too. Don't give up.“ Eine Saga geht zu Ende.
"In Dispatches From Elsewhere" geht's um...
This week, Travis is getting shaggy, Elaine live tweets, and gets a special "like." We had a mysterious late night encounter and we watched two shows, created by people you know, that hit us straight in the heart.First, we recommend the hilarious and heartbreaking After Life created by and starring Ricky Gervais.Airing currently on Netflix, After Life is in its second season. Ricky Gervais plays Tony, a recently widowed reporter for a small-town paper who is dealing with grief, depression, and thoughts of suicide. But, yeah, it's a comedy! We're becoming serious Gervais fans. He has a way in his writing and execution that really touches a nerve about hope and compassion without giving us the all too often used religious undertones that you find in American comedy. Gervais is a prolific Tweeter, and we recommend you follow him @rickygervais. Check our episode where we talk about The History of Lying too. In a happy surprise we caught our old pal Ross Owen in a cafe scene in Season 2. Check out Ross and his other great adventures at The Ross Owen Show. The second show we watched this week was the finale of Dispatches From Elsewhere.Jason Segel's passion project, Dispatches From Elsewhere, is a trippy excursion into the lives of four strangers who band together to play a mysterious game where they search for the elusive Clara, who is being held by the menacing Jejune Institute. The entire first season is available on AMC.By the finale, hard-hearted Travis was close to tears! And Travis is you.Based on the DocumentarySegel based Dispatches From Elsewhere on the documentary The Institute. But we recommend you watch the series first. You'll thank us.

Mike, Michaela, and Rob chatter about a TON of TV! Cheer, Ragnarok, The Good Place, Better Call Saul, Avenue 5, Star Trek: Picard, Dispatches From Elsewhere, McMillions, Locke & Key, […]
We watch Always a Witch, Dispatches from Elsewhere, October Faction, The Masked Singer and talk about CoVid19 and its affect on the entertainment industry
AMC already had a perfectly good Charlie Kaufman-esque property, but the network went with Dispatches From Elsewhere over Lodge 49 -- and while it's kind of Sarah's dream to fall into an alternate-reality scavenger hunt, first-time guest Dave Chen felt like the show would be more fun to "play" than to watch. Is it too twee? Too slow? Too divorced from the reality of non-celebrities? Or do the excellent cast and the In Search Of… graphics make it all worthwhile? Then we went Around The Dial with Love Is Blind, The Outsider, Teen Mom: Young and Pregnant, A French Village, and second-rate American TV in East Africa before Dave Cole declared transparent computer screens NOT the wave of the future. Dave Chen tried to give the Canon a bear hug by submitting the first-season finale of Succession for the Canon. Trebek won, disgracios lost (again), and IMDb throuples tested our wits during Game Time. Don't miss this dispatch from your podcast app; it's an all-new Extra Hot Great! GUESTS
