There are about 22,000 -31,000 polar bears left in the world. Research has revealed that as the Arctic warms, polar bears are facing a growing risk of contracting viruses, bacteria and parasites that they were less likely to encounter just 30 years ago.Turkeys are the star of many a Christmas dinner table but there is more to turkeys than meets the eye. They can fly, blush and are distant relatives of Tyrannosaurus rex. All up for discuss on this week's 'Green Scene' with Dr. Ruth Freeman. All with thanks to AIB Ireland.
Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones (/nɑːˈsɪər/; born September 14, 1973), known professionally as Nas (/nɑːz/), is an American rapper and entrepreneur. Rooted in East Coast hip hop, he is regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time.[2][3][4] The son of jazz musician Olu Dara, Nas began his musical career in 1989 under the moniker "Nasty Nas", and recorded demos under the wing of fellow East Coast rapper Large Professor. Nas made his recording debut on Professor's group, Main Source's 1991 song "Live at the Barbeque". Nas's debut album, Illmatic (1994) is considered to be one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time;[5][6] in 2021, the album was inducted into the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry.[7] His second album, It Was Written (1996) debuted atop the Billboard 200 and sold over a quarter-million units in its first week; the album, along with its single "If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)" (featuring Lauryn Hill), propelled Nas into mainstream success.[8] Both released in 1999, Nas's third and fourth albums I Am and Nastradamus were criticized as inconsistent and too commercially oriented, with critics and audiences fearing a decline in the quality of his output. From 2001 to 2005, Nas was involved in a highly publicized feud with Jay-Z, popularized by the diss track "Ether". The feud, along with Nas's subsequent releases Stillmatic (2001), God's Son (2002), and the double album Street's Disciple (2004) helped him restore his critical standing. Nas then reconciled with Jay-Z prior to signing with his then-spearheaded label, Def Jam Recordings in 2006; he adopted a more provocative, politicized direction with the albums Hip Hop Is Dead (2006) and his untitled ninth studio album (2008). In 2010, Nas released Distant Relatives, a collaborative album with Damian Marley that donated its royalties to active African charities. His tenth studio album, Life Is Good (2012) was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. After thirteen nominations, his thirteenth studio album, King's Disease (2020) won his first Grammy for Best Rap Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. His five subsequent albums—King's Disease II, Magic (2021), King's Disease III (2022), Magic 2, and Magic 3 (2023)—each received positive reception and were produced entirely by producer Hit-Boy. Nas has been second ranked by The Source on their "Top 50 Lyricists of All Time" list in 2012, fourth on MTV's Annual Hottest MCs in the Game list in 2013, and was named the "Greatest MC of All Time" by About.com in 2014. The following year, Nas was featured on the "10 Best Rappers of All Time" list by Billboard. Outside of recording, he serves as associate publisher of Mass Appeal magazine, and co-founded its spin-off division Mass Appeal Records, a record label which has signed artists including Dave East, N.O.R.E., Run the Jewels, and Swizz Beatz, among others.[9] Nas has released seventeen studio albums since 1994, ten of which are certified gold, platinum or multi-platinum in the U.S. PICTURE: By All-Pro Reels - https://www.flickr.com/photos/joeglo/52380600682/, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=123357625

Today's episode was recorded live at the fabulous Distant Relatives Ecolodge & Backpackers in Kilifi, Kenya. With numerous awards and accolades to it's name, I was keen to visit Distant Relatives after meeting up with today's guest at the Sustainable Africa Tourism Summit recently. We hear so many examples of high end luxury properties being super sustainable and regenerative and I'm mindful that there are far more travellers and indeed properties without high end budgets yet dedicated to more eco options. After a full tour of the property and a wonderful 2 night stay, I sat down with Distant Relatives' CEO, Mwanase, to learn more about the property, their ethos and their journey. As you can probably tell, I was absolutely in love with what they have created here in this beautiful part of Kenya and I will absolutely return one day. If you'd like to learn more about Distant Relatives, then I would encourage you to visithttps://www.kilifibackpackers.com And you can join Mwanase, Distant Relatives and hundreds more like-minded people and organisations by joining Climate Friendly Travel and indeed become an ambassador by signing up to join The SunX Registry at , climatefriendly.travel or email us at info@thesunprogram.com That's our show for this week. Thanks so much for your company and remember, when it comes to Climate Friendly Travel, every small step forward, is giant stride when we all step together…
Today we head over to Kenya where I recently provided the keynote talk at the Sustainable Africa Tourism Summit. After a week of meetings I took the opportunity to visit Tsavo National Park which is the largest national park in Kenya and also happens to be in its lowe season right now. Located just a 2 hour drive from Mombasa, Tsavo in the low season months has everything which you would expect to find of a major national park in East Africa with just one exception – crowds. In this episode recorded live at Voi Wildlife Lodge in Tsavo East, I talk through my experience of the low season here in Kenya and, as you will hear, got a little too close to the wildlife for my liking, in the process! And you can learn more Kenya during the low season months in a forthcoming article in Low Season Traveller Magazine as well as a new guide which we will be producing at a later date. To learn more about Voi Wildlife Lodge, please visit https://voiwildlifelodge.com Next time, we head over to Kilifi in Kenya to visit one of the most eco-conscious properties I have ever stayed in, Distant Relatives. But That's our show for this week. Thanks as always, for your company, and if you enjoyed this podcast, please do leave us a positive rating and review on your podcast app and also don't forget to follow us on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn to be the first to hear our latest low season stories, articles and guides. Have a great week wherever you are and remember that travel is always better and fairer for the planet, the local communities and you the travellers, when it's without the crowds…

When 500 members of the Kuklya family got together in England a few years ago for their first-ever reunion, the story got a lot of international attention. They were all descendants of the same man, Aba Kukla, who lived in a tiny village in Lithuania in the late 1700s. He had nine sons and a few daughters, and each went on to produce huge families of their own, creating a sprawling family tree that, only now, with the advent of DNA testing, can be fully grasped. Despite hundreds of their relatives being wiped out in the Holocaust, the Kuklyas believe they are now part of the largest documented Ashkenazi family in the world, with 75,000 relatives and counting—including some pretty famous cousins, such as Barbara Streisand, Bob Dylan, Bette Midler and Billy Crystal. There are also Kuklya cousins in Canada, including Ralph Cilevitz in Toronto. At a recent family gathering in New York City, he was the only Canadian present, but knew he couldn't be the only Canadian relative. So he's since made it his mission to track them down—and look for others even farther abroad. In a Hip-Hop climate where there are many artists who strive to be the party starters, and most recently the drillers, there is still a space for the dark, gloomy, and lyrically inclined boom-bap Rap. Some of the names leading the charge are Buffalo's Griselda Records, Syracuse's Stove God Cooks, and North Philly's own, OT The Real! While he spent a few days in Boston recently, we got a chance to have a sit down with OT and talk heavily about his most recent mixtape "Broken Glass", hosted exclusively by the legend DJ Green Lantern! While it may not be important to most, OT The Real being originally from Fitchburg, MA is a big deal for the music scene out here. We see what he's been able to accomplish within the last 4 years alone and we watch his moves in the game as a proud distant relative. "Millyz & Friends" is a concert series that Millyz has been putting on for years now and is what introduced us to OT's gritty street rap and kept us tapped in. As his career progressed a few industry names like Meek Mill, Beanie Sigel, and even Jadakiss gave the North Philly rapper a cosign which has taken his platform to new heights. Join us this week as Charlie MaSheen & KASH welcomes our last guest of 2021 and talk to OT The Real about "Broken Glass", his story, white privilege, and SO MUCH MORE! Storytelling is a tool for connection. During covid, or at other times, we may not always be able to visit distant relatives or loved ones. Yet, we yearn for ways to connect. Zoom, telephone, and mail are one way, but anyone with a 3-year-old (or a 15-year-old) knows how this can be taxing for a child. Alternatively, simple stories are often a great way to help our children stay connected in heart and mind to grandma or grandpa - and in ways that can be very engaging and playful. How do you love yourself when you keep on failing? This week's ADR was inspired by Majime who said, "I'm going through tough things, and I want to learn more about healing and the journey to acceptance and self-love." We are not experts on self-care and healing, but we try our best to answer through our reflections on our experiences of failure from living in Japan and Australia. We retell our stories of 'failure to achieve goals,' while giving tips based on how we were able to move past these things. Episodes out every Wednesday! Mega City Four special with Gerry Bryant in conversation with David Eastaugh The group were officially formed in 1987 and the band's career started with performing gigs around their local town of Farnborough before making their vinyl debut in September 1987 with "Miles Apart"/"Running in Darkness". The single led to a round of gigs with fellow punk-influenced bands like Senseless Things and Snuff. "Miles Apart" and "Running" were reissued (separately) in 1988 on the independent label Decoy, along with the more melodic "Distant Relatives" and "Less Than Senseless". A healthy following latched on to them quickly, and by 1988 the group were performing to packed audiences on a regular basis. Continuing on their local success, the band would eventually release their 1989 debut album, Tranzophobia The band continued to tour extensively in the UK, Europe and North America, working with bands including Les Thugs, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine and Doughboys, amongst many others. The band's second studio album, Who Cares Wins, was released in 1990.[2] Extensive touring across Europe began again, with the band performing in the Reading Festival that year. Who Cares Wins was followed by a compilation album of their early 7" singles, called Terribly Sorry Bob (1991). The band subsequently moved to a major record label to record two further studio albums, Sebastopol Rd. (1992) (recorded by Jessica Corcoran at London's Greenhouse Recording Studios) and Magic Bullets (1993). This album produced the singles "Wallflower" and "Iron Sky", which both placed 69 and 48 in the UK Singles Chart respectively. After falling out with their record label, they moved to Fire Records to record their final studio album, Soulscraper (1996). In addition to their studio albums, the band also released a live album, a Peel Sessionsdisc, and a number of singles. The British music journalist, Martin Roach, wrote a biography of the band, Mega City Four: Tall Stories and Creepy Crawlies, published in 1993.

Mega City Four special with Danny Brown in conversation - talking about life in the band & much much more - with David Eastaugh Mega City Four were an English indie rock band formed in Farnborough, Hampshire, who obtained popularity throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. Mega City Four consisted of guitarist and vocalist Wiz, his brother and rhythm guitarist Danny Brown, bassist Gerry Bryant and drummer Chris Jones. According to Uncut magazine, the group "earned a reputation across the globe as an exciting live band". Wiz and Bryant were in a band together at school called 'Stallion', who performed two shows together. One of the shows took place at Cove Secondary School (where "Stallion will come for you" stickers were handed out in an attempt to bolster the bands following) and the show was concluded when the school cut the power. Wiz, seeking more independence to write his own music, decided he wanted to form a new band with Bryant and Danny Brown, named 'Capricorn', after the brothers' shared the star sign. Capricorn formed in June 1982. They consisted of drummer Martin Steib, vocalist and guitarist Wiz, rhythm guitarist Danny and bassist Gerry. The band had a personal fallout in regards to musical direction and dissolved in 1986. A four-track demo was recorded in 1982, and they released one demo, titled 'The Good News Tape' in 1985. The trio of Gerry, Danny and Wiz maintained closeness and enlisted Chris Jones (who drummed in local band Exit East) to join their new group. The new name, initially suggested by Steib in the Capricorn era, was decided as Mega City Four. The group were officially formed in 1987 and the band's career started with performing gigs around their local town of Farnborough before making their vinyl debut in September 1987 with "Miles Apart"/"Running In Darkness"[2]. The single led to a round of gigs with fellow punk-influenced bands like Senseless Things and Snuff. In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie begin by hopping into the wayback machine and digging into the Roggers And Hammerstein song I Enjoy Being A Girl from the Flower Drum Song soundtrack. What are the cultural implications of a song that celebrates an appreciation for stereotypically American gender roles. How do those factor into a voluntary society? Is Lizzie actually leading the conversation? In “I Heard This Happened” we switch roles as Nicky P brings the girl-pop and Lizzie brings the post-hardcore to the table. Nicks bandcamp choice this week is Future Me Hates Me by The Beths out of New Zealand. An infectious pop-rock disc ready to carry summer well into September. The sweet vocals are juxtaposed against fuzzy buzzy guitars and lush washes of harmonies. Lizzie on the other hand brings California Cousins’ album Distant Relatives into the booth. The group hailing from Rochester, NY is keeping the spirit of post-hardcore and emo alive well after necessary and I suppose we owe them thanks for that. This weeks interview is with graffiti artist & small business owner Andrew Horner out of Texas. BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the #LegSweepSpecialist interview session! These guys totally caught us by surprise last fall with their self-titled debut on Below System Records. After we played a few cuts on the show and just happened to hear Wordsworth talk about his upcoming project with 1/2 of the group, MC/Producer Sam Brown, AND the fact these guys are representing the South lovely - we knew we had to have them on the show. We sit down for a nice chat with Sam and MC Jaxx Fuzz to talk about the new LP, what’s on deck in 2017 and why they both chose to make Wilmington, NC their home. Sam drops some jewels on his time spent at Quad Studios in NYC, including an insane story about Nas and Damian Marley while they were recording “Distant Relatives”.We also get the low down on the podcast they launched last fall entitled “The Layover” and their unwavering support for the Counter Culture. Special Guest: Born and raised in Nigeria, Nneka is deeply influenced by her roots. The political and social states of her home country are often prevalent in her music and live performances. It is this message of awareness, hope and love that made her a perfect fit for a collaboration with Nas and Damian Marley, both legendary artists and personal influences of Nneka's. “With this tour,” Nneka explains, “we represent the fact that we are all connected to one another, all part of one entity and one source – which is love.” Fresh off of the release of her first US album debut Concrete Jungle, Nneka has been announced as the support act for the historic Distant Relatives Tour with Nas and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley hitting the road May 2010. The tour will stop in major cities across the country in support of their Distant Relatives album, which is a celebration of not only to the bond between the two artists, but the connection to their African ancestry, which inspired the album both musically and lyrically. The tour extends Nneka's highly successful introduction to the United States, having been heralded by the likes of Spin, Rolling Stone, and Billboard, among others as the next “it” artist of 2010. Her stunning performance of “Heartbeat” on the Late Show with David Letterman left fans enthralled, and Perez Hilton has proclaimed her music to be “a gift to the world.” More recently, the critical acclaim piqued the interest of national retailer Whole Foods, who is now carrying her album as part of their “Artist Discovery” program. Concrete Jungle is in stores now on Epic/Decon.
