Our guest this week is Colorado-based cyclist Michaela Thompson, who joined us a couple of days before the kickoff of the Life Time Grand Prix at Sea Otter Gravel. Originally from Boulder, Michaela now lives in Durango CO. She talks about her upbringing in a family of athletes, and how she made her way from downhill ski racing to joining the cycling team at Boulder High School in her junior year. Michaela joined the Boulder Junior Cycling Club in 2019 where she dabbled in all disciplines of cycling, and qualified as a junior for Cyclocross Worlds in January of 2020. She tells us how that experience sparked a fire in her to compete at a high level in cycling, leading her to join a professional development team in Durango. Over the next couple of years she gained experience in the endurance cycling world, and eventually made her own race program as a privateer in 2024 where she finished 10th overall in the Life Time Grand Prix. Michaela also shares some of her goals and plans for the 2025 race season, which include a second year in the Grand Prix, as well as racing Brek Epic which starts the day after Leadville! Today's episode is an explorative conversation with Elliot Brinkley, a herbalist and teacher and the owner of the inspirational Dancing Willow Herbs apothecary in Durango Colorado, which is the land of the Yoot Mountain People.Elliot has a beautiful way of joining the science with practical medicine making and an embodied connection with the plants. She facilitates spaces that invite people in closer to a deeper relationship with herbs, and emphasises the importance of learning herbs directly, rather than solely online and in books.Since we recorded the interview, Elliott had to cancel Blooming Rooted May, but the autumn session will be happening. Also her upcoming podcast will now be called "The Dancing Willow", which was just launched this week and you can find the link to it in the shownotes.I hope that you enjoy this episode, not only is Elliot the first international guest that I have invited onto the podcast, but she is also an inspiring woman on a mission doing wonderful things in her community. It was nice to tune in with the different education opportunities that are available in USA compared to Australia. As you would know if you have been listening to previous episodes on this segment, Australia has very limited education opportunities for herbal medicine and all of the current schools that offer any kind of herbal medicine training are all highly academic and scholar and there are no schools offering hands on herbal education on the Earth. But The Elder Tree is planning to change this! Love is in the air this week as Jennie and Dianne share the story of a woman who led, shall we say, an alternative life as madam Bessie Rivers, and despite her unconventional path, found love and respect among many in her community and her final resting place has not been forgotten in lovely Greenmount Cemetery in Durango, Colorado. Situated in the southwestern part of Colorado, Durango is surrounded by the rugged San Juan Mountains and boasts a well-preserved historic district with Victorian architecture, reflecting its mining and railroad past; a past whose Ordinary Extraordinary story would not be complete without the generosity, compassion, tenacity, and ingenuity of madam Bessie Rivers. To view this episode on YouTube, click here: https://youtu.be/L8A3_OR-_SI?si=ljcXa52NKKceihUdResources used to research this episode include:, City Of Durango. Dan Korman from Alpenglow Properties discusses the third-quarter stats for single-family homes in Durango. He highlights the challenges for buyers due to rising interest rates nearing 8% and the scarcity of affordable homes. Despite a 10% increase in single-family home listings in town compared to last year, there's a surprising dip in September sales due to low supply. The median price for in-town homes is $817,000, up 7% from the previous year. County-wide, it's $750,000, an 11% increase. With low inventory, high prices, and increasing interest rates, the future is uncertain, but Dan remains cautiously optimistic for 2024.Watch this story at www.durangolocal.news/newsstories/third-quarter-market-statistics-durango-coSupport the show

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by Rapha It's great timing to have this guy on the pod, he is the man of the moment and has been dominating the Vuelta a Espana – I'm talking of course about Sepp Kuss. I was so excited to get Sepp on the pod to learn a bit more about this enigmatic American rider and hear the backstory of his meteoric rise to the top ranks of the World Tour. He's something of an anomaly in the pro peloton, having tread a very different route to the top of the sport. He came through the junior ranks as a mountain biker, having grown up in the remote, mountainous city of Durango Colorado, which is known for its incredible trails and vibrant mountain biking community. On moving to Boulder to study at university, he discovered road cycling and started racing on the American circuit. During his early days of racing, when he was just starting to capture the attention of American teams, it was a meeting with Jumbo-Visma DS Grischa Niermann that catapulted Kuss from a relatively unknown, new on the scene young American talent, to European pro, and one of the most sought-after domestiques in the sport - and more recently, bona fide Grand Tour contender. He's part of a new generation of incredible American talent coming through the ranks, which is so exciting to watch, and we delve into some of this to see what the cycling landscape is like in the US currently in the post-Lance era, and where the future of the sport is headed. We also chatted about the pressures that come with being a Grand Tour contender, and whether he feels the pull to ride as a GC contender himself. We talked about what it's like being the main support to these superstar riders, as well as the personalities and quirks among some of the sport's biggest names that Sepp has ridden for. I hope you enjoy the listen! Cheers, Mitch

Matt Shriver is the General Manager and technical director for the Trek Factory Racing cross country team and is based in Durango Colorado. He's a former pro rider himself and previously served as the technical director for the Trek WorldTour road team for seven years. How did you make the transition from professional racing to managing race teams? What are the responsibilities of a pro team liaison? Does Trek Factory Racing provide coaching resources to athletes, or do athletes tend to bring their own training team? Some pro teams are organized as collectives, while others like Trek Factory Racing seem to lean on more of a team model. Are there different philosophies among the different racing groups in MTB? Is mountain biking a team sport? Is there a lot of strategy in MTB racing? How does recovery work between races? Is there much downtime for the staff and athletes in between events? How are team athletes selected? What is the most stressful part of being a team liaison? How intrusive are anti-doping protocols for athletes and staff? How does a brand like Trek measure the success of their race team? Do you think the current international MTB competition model is sustainable? For core mountain bikers who love riding but don't necessarily follow pro racing, why should they start paying attention to races? What can we learn from watching World Cup competitions? In an upcoming episode we'll also talk with Ryan from the Trek Factory Racing DH team. Keep up with the Trek Factory Racing team at racing.trekbikes.com. Photo credit: Trek Factory Racing. Many of our guests and listeners (and ourselves) grew up in religious contexts that packaged the abstinence-only sex education curricula developed during the Reagan era and continued in the 40+ years since then through the concept of “purity”. Spiritual success happens to those (especially the female segment) who avoid having sexual relationships prior to marriage, either with their partners or with themselves (with or without the assistance of sexually explicit material) and who avoid same-sex relationships. Much of the work on our podcast is dedicated to debunking the painful and toxic implications of purity culture. Because, as Julia summarizes in this episode, “There's no such thing as the good girl. It doesn't matter how good you are, you're never good enough.” We talk with Abby Kubicek, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Addictions Counselor, and owner of Durango Relationship Counseling in Durango CO. There she focuses on helping those in all types of relationships, whether with themselves, a partner, multiple partners, kinky or BDSM. A great deal of her work is focused on LGBTQ2IA+ identity and relationships, sexual health, the impact of religion on relationships and more. Abby discusses her experiences of navigating purity culture, including: The inconsistent messages around pleasure (27:00): Masturbation feels good, as Abby discovered as a child. However, “the church doesn't talk to you about sex until you hit puberty, and then the message is that it's painful, you're not going to enjoy it, it's gross. However, I learned that when I do that to myself, it feels fine, so why would it hurt for someone else?” Julia describes the numerous forms of media that reinforced these messages, from the magazine Brio to Christian groups like Barlow Girl and Rebecca St James. Good girls and bad girls (34:00): Abby explains, “Christian culture sets up a dichotomy of the good girl and bad girl. There's no in between, even though, spoiler alert, the good girl doesn't exist. But you can aspire to be a good girl, or you're a bad girl. Those are your only two options. You become a bad girl when you decide to have a sexually consensual experience, but even that wasn't free and separated from the confines of what you learned about your body.” Competitive relationships with other women (42:00): Abby reflects on her adolescent and young adult position, “I'm not really a girls girl, I mostly have guy friends.” She describes, “If your main goal in life is to find a Godly Christian husband, than any women in the church can compete with you and you shouldn't be friends with her, because she may jeopardize your possibility of finding a spouse. It took me a long time to unlearn that women are competition and rather embrace them as lovely people who enhance my life and bring me joy. You turn the shame on yourself, and onto other women.” The contexts of eating disorders (46:00): Julia reminds us that the 90s and 00s, “girls who were celebrities were asked in these abusive interview about whether or not they were virgins and saving themselves for sex. Their bodies were commented on in public way. The marriage of the greater context of messaging toward girls with the ways that the church doubled down on these messages was so intense.” Jeremiah adds a family systems approach, discussing research about the impact of dads investing in the sexual, relational, and menstrual health of their daughters goes a long way in increasing self-efficacy and decreasing eating disorders and other manifestations of people rebelling against themselves. Body neutrality (1:03:00): The discourse of purity culture is rooted in dichotomys. Pure or unpure. Good or bad. Heaven or hell. Abby describes the process of holding two ideas at once as an important way to heal from the tension and stressors of these dichotomys. She encourages people to practice saying, “I don't love this part of myself today. I don't hate it either. It's just a part of my body.” Abby closes her time with us by reminding us that Jesus' ultimate message was love—love for yourself, and for your fellow humans. Healing begins with loving people and yourself. Let's heal together!

Clint's the Co-Owner of Purpose Driven Wealth at Thrivent. They have three offices, in Windsor Colorado, Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Durango Colorado.During our conversation we talk a lot about building a business in the financial services industry. We also talk about Clint's life during college and the things he struggled with while growing up. During his youth, he went through the tragedy of loosing his father which made him become the kind of leader he is today. It's a wide ranging conversation and we talk about all kinds of things from economics to faith, to the best financial practices. There's a lot here for everybody, so I hope you'll tune in and enjoy this episode with Clint Jasperson.

In this episode: .The FAQ is: What is the best way to test out the van life for me? Today's Destination : Durango Part 1 Today's Mistake- Toll Booth mishap Travel Advice: Tell a joke to someone you meet In this episode: FAQ What is the best way to test out van life for me? My friend Victoria is testing out vans for a possible retirement. Answer: If you want to retire and live in a van, I encourage you to practice with some friends who already do this kind of travel. Ask them to set you up with a trip and help you navigate the way to become a van life person. You need to tell them about your experience if you have any, or not. Be frank and clear on your expectations and your needs. Then when it comes to getting the van, they will be on board, and you will be able to learn from them what this takes. It's about the experience. You will find several reasons to go and others NOT to join the van life experience, but you'll never know if you like it until you try it out yourself. The show notes have a link to the not so pretty side of van life. This person would rather stay in a fancy hotel, so be warned. Not everyone wants the van life. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/20/magazine/van-life-dwelling.html Destination: Durango Part 1 There's a new Pedestrian bridge in Durango. This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy tunes into the Ska network with co-founders Bill Graham and Dave Thibodeau from Ska Brewing in Durango, Colorado. The gang will listen to Dave's and Bill's latest album about their brewing, growing, and drinking process. For the first track, we have the story of Bill and Dave. Growing up together by the Front Range of Colorado, the duo started home-brewing to Ska music in high school. They then moved to Durango partly to create the Ska Brewing Co. we now know, but mostly to ski. The second track is an intro to the three waves of Ska and their favorite bands like The Toasters and The Pietasters, who might be performing at their 27th anniversary this Labor Day Weekend.Track three and four are more complex, with Bill and Dave diving deeper into the company and their beers, as well as weed legalization in Colorado and the challenges it creates for local growers and brewers. Track five increases in tempo as the gang talks about home-brewing and the importance of enjoying the process. They also touch briefly on the words written on the lips of the cans with Jimmy's challenge for their next one. To end the show, track six takes us gardening and into Dave's backyard for a mini-lecture on how to grow carrots. No wonder this album is top 1 on Billboard right now!Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. Hello to you listening in Durango, Colorado!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga. Is it just me or is the media still asking if it's okay to be a woman and express confidence? What's up with that nonsense? Here me when I say this: Yes, it's okay. It's better than okay. It's required! Yet, we wait for permission.I waited my turn, too. As an incest survivor I heard, “Be quiet. No one will believe you. You are a liar.”So I was quiet until I learned that didn't work either. I looked for ways to grow my confidence: art therapy; teachers, friends and colleagues who heard me; competing in Moot Court during law school and winning top prize; trying on one voice and then another until I found the heart of my voice which led me to the heart of my message. Did it happen over night? Not a chance! Was it easy? No way! But here's the thing: no matter when and how you begin growing your confidence, it's a start. A start is all you need.Question: Let's do this together! Let's show them what a woman's confidence sounds like! Who's all in?You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!
