The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail, and Fidelity.Greetings, you curiouser and curiouser Herle Burly-ites! You know, there's only ONE Provincial Premier in this country that has bucked the electoral trend since Covid – which is to say, NOT lost the election, or eked out a tiny margin of victory, or just managed to retain a majority with a vastly diminished number of seats. That Premier (and former Herle Burly guest) is Tim Houston of Nova Scotia, who, this week, increased his majority from 34 to 43 seats (out of 55). Crushing the Liberals and making the NDP the new official opposition in the process. Premier Houston is one of one.Today, we're talking to the leaders and architects of the campaign that helped him do it. A dream team victory lap, as it were: Cameron Mackeen, Tara Miller, and James Mitchener join us today.A few, very brief biographical notes:Cameron MacKeen served as Premier Houston's campaign co-chair for both the 2021 and 2024 elections. He's a managing lawyer with Nova Scotia Legal Aid, and a former Leg. Reporter at the Chronicle Herald.Tara Miller served as co-chair for the 2024 election. She's been recognized by Best Lawyers in Canada for 3 years running … and is a partner, and the “M”, in MDW Law. James Mitchener was campaign manager in both 2021 and 2024. He's currently Premier Houston's Director of Operations and Strategic Relations.I'm going to talk to them about the whole, goddamn successful story today:The only incumbent government in Canada to increase their margin of seats and votes in a high inflation period. How did they do it?The risk/reward calculus for going early. The core strategies. The federal Liberal wedge and why it was so effective.Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast. A political cartoon in the Chronicle Herald caused quite a stir recently. Michael De Adder drew the cartoon, in response to the unusual number of mayoral candidates running in Halifax. But for Darryl Johnson, the only Black candidate running for mayor, the cartoon felt like targeted racism. The two men have since met in person to reconcile their perspectives. They came into our studio to talk about how that went.

Check out the latest episode of our Conversational Selling podcast to learn more about Natalie. In this episode, Nancy and Natalie discuss the following:The fundamental importance of trust in business relationshipsNatalie's experience as a chief marketing officer during the 2008 financial crisisThe role of trust in business-to-business transactionsThe outcome of Natalie's research: Trust is a fundament of every buying decision in business-to-business environmentsWhy customers are willing to pay more for products and services from trusted companiesKey Takeaways: I created a proprietary framework and a model to help people build these relationships of trust with their customers and colleagues.Trust is what the most successful companies have in common.People and companies that are focused on building relationships of trust are the ones that are going to be most successful.Everybody can learn how to build a relationship or strengthen a relationship of trust and we can all cultivate and develop these skills."There is nothing more important than trust. And if we think about it, every single decision we make comes down to trust. First, we decide: do we trust? Then, we decide: are we going to listen? Afterward, we decide if we're going to have a conversation. Following that, we decide if we're going to look at someone's capabilities. We make these decisions subconsciously. In fact, in every business and personal relationship, trust plays a crucial role. Because I know most of your listeners are either working in a business, own a business, or are leaders in a business, trust is involved in every single relationship we have. It's the most important question everyone has." – NATALIE"I became deeply intrigued by how customers decide to buy in a business-to-business environment that I went back to school. I did graduate research, which led me to the science of trust. My master's thesis revolved around how people decide to buy in such environments. I found out quite quickly that it all starts with trust. First, we decide to trust, then we decide to buy. And you know, lonely wolf, there's a wonderful, very, very strong, much stronger than when I started 10 years ago, business case for learning and cultivating and developing relationships of trust. And, you know, worldwide, as we know, people buy from people they trust. Well, the fact is that 80% of us buy from a company or an organization we trust. And we pay more. We pay more when we trust. If I'm going to go out for a coffee, I'm going to pay more for a Starbucks coffee because I trust that coffee. I trust the company. I know they know how to create and make an amazing coffee and it's consistent. It tastes the same just like we know in business-to-business environments companies that will provide us with services we trust, or advice we trust, or products that are safe and secure to use, or are going to do what they say they're going to do. So that's how I got into it." – NATALIE"We all decide to trust. We make, as I mentioned, a subconscious decision. And we make that decision based on another person's communication, how they behave, and how they service us. So, it really comes down to these three components, Nancy. So, when you and I are buying a product or service, we're evaluating another person. And when we say we trust a company, well, companies, as we know, are made up of people. So as an example, when we are buying, say, professional services, like an engineering service, design services to ref- let's say we're going to renovate a factory, we would and we're the business owner and we own this plant, this factory. Well, we would most likely talk to a few different engineering firms to get a design. And we would have conversations and as you know, because you know, this is what you share with your audience, it all comes down to conversations and connecting with people." – NATALIEConnect with Natalie Doyle Oldfield:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nataliedoyleoldfield/Success Through Trust Inc: https://www.successthroughtrust.com/Try Our Proven, 3-Step System, Guaranteeing Accountability and Transparency that Drives RESULTS by clicking on this link: https://oneofakindsales.com/call-center-in-a-box/ Connect with Nancy Calabrese: Twitter:https://twitter.com/oneofakindsalesFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/One-Of-A-Kind-Sales-304978633264832/Website:https://oneofakindsales.comPhone: 908-879-2911 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ncalabrese/Email: leads@oneofakindsales.com

As an editorial cartoonist, Michael de Adder says there's been an evolution when it comes to what people find offensive. And because that line keeps moving, he's had to adapt and reframe some of his work. But he says art and the artist are intrinsically linked, so he wasn't entirely surprised when Dilbert creator Scott Adams was fired from newspapers, including the Chronicle Herald, for what he was saying on his podcast. In fact, he said he was surprised it hadn't happened earlier. The award-winning editorial cartoonist says it's a difficult subject for him to discus. But he did so reluctantly with Sheldon taking on freedom of expression and freedom from consequences.
A book she received as a child helped spark a lifelong interest in conspiracies an unusual tales. And Katy Jean has been turning that passion into fabulous stories for the SaltWire Network. Her most recent column connects a graveyard for 19th Century Veterans on the peninsula to a pile of headstones across the harbour at the back of a property in Cow Bay. The first of a three part series is about to be printed in The Chronicle Herald and at SaltWire.com. And Katy is hoping the publication of this story will prompt someone to come forward to help solve this mystery of the moved markers from Fort Massey Cemetery.
Susan Joudrey wrote an Op Ed in the Chronicle Herald last week, voicing her concerns about the number of students and teachers who are missing class time due to COVID, RSV, and flu right now. She's hoping to see stronger action from the province to limit classroom spread and mitigate learning loss.

Road safety may be a shared responsibility, but the level of responsibility is different for the different road users. That's the message one safe street advocate is trying to get out to the public on social media. Martyn Williams recently wrote a piece for the Chronicle Herald asking "How many more people have to be injured or killed on Halifax Streets?" This was in response to a well-known cyclist who was injured on the Herring Cove Road. That prompted a rally by other riders who wanted to send a message about "critical mass" and appropriate infrastructure. Williams says one challenge in HRM is the 1950's mentality of "focusing on vehicular traffic flow and minimizing delay for drivers even if that threatens the safety of our most vulnerable road users." As he points out about there have been 54 fatalities on roads within Halifax Regional Municipality from 2018 to 2021, including 13 pedestrian fatalities.
It's as close as he's come to talking publicly about his medical challenges. The details will be in his upcoming book. But in the recent piece in the Chronicle Herald, Rick Howe shares some of his concerns with "COVID anarchy" and the end of public health rules.
It takes a special kind of talent to cover the intricacies and nuances of what happens in a court room. Steve Bruce with the Chronicle Herald has shown that in a story that we seldom see. And it involves a mother's forgiveness to the man who killed her only son.

Two veteran hockey watchers compare the relative performances of the two Nova Scotia franchises in the Q-League. Will Palov has been covering the Mooseheads for the Chronicle Herald for the past 27 years. John Moore was the voice of the Mooseheads for more than 2 decades and now does play-by-play for the Saint John Seadogs.
The lede in a recent story on his life and his passing, spoke to the many historical and human legacies of Darce Fardy. "Nova Scotia's first freedom of information officer who later shared his story of living with dementia as a Chronicle Herald columnist, died Saturday at age 89 in Halifax." His long career as a journalist led him to his role as a public servant, focusing on access to information and the right for citizens to know what governments were doing. Former Nova Scotia Politician Graham Steele worked with Fardy as both a member of the opposition and the government during his time in office. Steele now holds a similar job as the Information and Privacy Commissioner in Nunavut. That's where he spoke fondly of the strength of character and of his work later in life sharing his personal journey with Alzheimer's.

He has earned a diploma in parapsychology from the Stratford Career Institute, a doctorate degree in parapsychology from the American International University, and has taken additional parapsychological training from the Nova Scotia Community College, University of Edinburgh's Koestler Parapsychology Unit, Rhine Education Center, and the University of Ottawa. He is currently completing his Master of Arts in counselling psychology degree from Yorkville University. Elliott's parapsychological work has also been featured on the Discovery Channel, The Globe and Mail, The Daily News, The Chronicle Herald, and several podcasts and radio stations. He wrote and published his first professional book in May 2018 entitled “Evil in Exeter”, based on a true story and investigation he conducted into one Rhode Island family's terrifying haunting. On September 1, 2020 his second book, Supernatural Encounters: True Paranormal Accounts from Law Enforcement was released.
What are the police supposed to do? If it is really about keeping the public safe, why are some members of the public specifically targeted and subjected to frequent surveillance, and why do black Americans continue to die at the hands of the police? It's time to go beyond saying enough is enough, and to start putting policies in place so it happens never again. Tari Ajadi is dedicated, through research and activism, to seeing policing change. Approaching the nature of policing through a public health approach, Mr. Ajadi offers an approach to public safety that is, at its heart, is about building safe communities, especially for those who have been the very targets of police. Tari Ajadi is a PhD candidate in Political Science at Dalhousie University. His dissertation research compares how Black activists in municipalities in Nova Scotia and Ontario strategize to prompt change in policing and in health policy. A British-Nigerian immigrant to Canada, Tari aims to produce research that supports and engages with Black communities across the country. He has published articles in The Globe and Mail, The Chronicle-Herald, University Affairs, Canadian Government Executive, Canadian Diversity and The Tyee. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Health Association of African Canadians. He is a Junior Fellow at the MacEachen Institute for Public Policy and Governance. He holds a MA in Political Science from Dalhousie University. Follow Dr. Bob on Twitter: @ProfessorHuish

An apparent stumble from Premier Iain Rankin turned out to be less of a political hit because of the actions of a (now) former Progressive Conservative MLA. From the border restrictions to the highway blockade and the ouster of Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin, it was quite a week in politics. And I had the chance to sit down and dissect it with Chronicle Herald political reporter Francis (Frank) Campbell.

Beryl Markham managed to fit three extraordinary careers into one lifetime: She was a champion racehorse trainer, a pioneering bush pilot, and a best-selling author. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll review her eventful life, including her historic solo flight across the Atlantic in 1936. We'll also portray some Canadian snakes and puzzle over a deadly car. Intro: In 1974, Stewart Coffin devised a topological puzzle without a solution. Sapna Mahajan, a national leader on the topic, joins us to share her insight. Coming to you again from the Halifax Central Library, bestselling and award-winning author Michael Crummey sits down with Chronicle Herald columnist and author John DeMont to discuss his new book: The Innocents. Longlisted for the 2019 Scotiabank Giller Prize, The Innocents is described as a sweeping, heart-wrenching, deeply immersive novel about a brother and sister alone in a small world. A brother and sister are orphaned in an isolated cove on Newfoundland's northern coastline. Their home is a stretch of rocky shore governed by the feral ocean, by a relentless pendulum of abundance and murderous scarcity. Still children with only the barest notion of the outside world, they have nothing but the family's boat and the little knowledge passed on haphazardly by their mother and father to keep them. As they fight for their own survival through years of meager catches and storms and ravaging illness, it is their fierce loyalty to each other that motivates and sustains them. But as seasons pass and they wade deeper into the mystery of their own natures, even that loyalty will be tested. Bookings is recorded and produced by Paul MacKay for the King’s Co-op Bookstore in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Many people are uncomfortable with talking about death, Cassandra Yonder is not one of them. You may or may not have heard that community death caring (sometimes refered to as death midwifery, death doulas, thana doulas, etc.) is making a comeback into our culture. I think my mom would have loved this had she known it was even an option. In this week's episode, Cassandra and I talk about what it means to take care of the dead as a community and how she is passing that knowledge on to other people. Cassandra is the co-owner of BEyond Yonder Virtual School of Community Deathcaring. Cassandra is a prominent contributor to the alternative deathcare movement in Canada, which spans the humanities, social sciences, science, and medicine. Her expertise and leadership in deathcare practice in Canada have been recognized nationally, and she frequently appears in the national and international media. For example, she has been interviewed and referenced in Maclean’s, The Guardian, The National Post, CBC, The Coast, Media Co-op, The Chronicle-Herald, The Stranger, and The Huffington Post. Cassandra has an academic background in Sociology, Gerontology, Architecture and Grief & Bereavement. Her family of 6 are homesteading in the forested highlands of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia with over 70 animals, where the realities of birth and death are ever present. Cassandra is a leader in the movement to reclaim family and community centred care of the dying, dead and bereaved. In addition to assisting with the home funeral and home burial of her friend and neighbour, Cassandra is a member of the Order of the Good Death, has represented Canada on the board of directors for the National Home Funeral Alliance, is currently the chair of Community Deathcare Canada, and has started the BEyond Yonder Virtual School for Community Deathcaring in Canada with her partner. She also hosts the world's largest online community for alternative deathcare on her facebook group with more than 4000 members. Cassandra's spoken and written words help us to articulate the need for a cultural re-connection with death. You can find her at her website: deathcaring.ca

Guest 1: The QMJHL semi finals are previewed with the help of Willy Palov of the Chronicle Herald out of Halifax.
Historian Afua Cooper is on the show this week to talk about racism, slavery and Lord Dalhousie, the university’s namesake. She’s the James R. Johnston Chair in Black Canadian Studies at Dal. She has a few things to say about the statues coming down. Plus, Tim and Terra discuss the latest rally at the Cornwallis statue, the Bloomfield property and the Chronicle Herald.
The 18-month strike at the Chronicle Herald . For some, it’s a return to the newsroom, though with a lighter paycheque and longer work week. For others, it’s a loss of a job. Tim and Terra dissect this news, of course, in our Week in Review segment. We also have Valerie Dufour on the show to talk about the bitter she experienced at the Journal de Montreal. Like with the Herald strike, those workers launched a news site while the Journal de Montreal kept publishing. And when it was over, only one-quarter of the workers returned to the paper. Her advice to HTU members as they prepare to return to the Herald newsroom on Tuesday? Do yoga.
As a crippling 18-month strike drags on, the Nova Scotia government has to try to strike an agreement between the Chronicle Herald and its unionized workers. This industrial inquiry, the first in Nova Scotia in nearly a quarter century, gives the mediator, , sweeping powers, including the ability to subpoena the Chronicle Herald's financial records. On this episode we speak to Danny Cavanagh, President of the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour, about this inquiry, and what it might mean for the striking workers. We heard back from the province after we recorded this episode. A spokesperson sent us describing the terms of reference for the inquiry commission. There’s a media blackout in place during the mediation process, which means the two sides are not supposed to speak to reporters. No matter what happens, though, we’ll learn the outcome. In an email to Examineradio, Marla MacInnis, a government spokesperson, said: "Ideally, a voluntary agreement can be reached during mediation this weekend. Otherwise, the Industrial Inquiry Commission will review the causes of the ongoing labour dispute through a public hearing and make recommendations."
The HRM community of Harrietsfield has been dealing with toxic drinking water for close to a decade-and-a-half, and three successive provincial governments have failed to address the issue. Some residents are with the help of and their Executive Director, . We speak with her for today's episode. Plus, our own Tim Bousquet won gold at last week's for his series. , the news site run by the striking Chronicle Herald employees, also made an impressive showing, while the CH itself was largely ignored. Finally, you try feeding yourself on $4.65/day. The provincial government thinks you can do it without issue, since that's what they allocate to feed folks in provincially-run seniors' homes.
...The Chronicle Herald's Mark Lever, that's who. After pleading poverty for nearly 16 months while his reporters, editors, and photographers are strike, he came up with the bucks to buy 28 Atlantic Canadian newspapers from the floundering Transcontinental chain. This gives his company an effective monopoly in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island. We speak with long-time Nova Scotia journalists (and former Transcontinental reporters) Stephen Kimber and Parker Donham about the rationale behind the purchase and whether this benefits news consumers in Atlantic Canada.Support CANADALAND: https://canadaland.com/joinSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week we speak with , the former president of Cape Breton University and current NDP candidate in Halifax-Armdale for the upcoming provincial election.
